The texts used in these 32 songs are all by Heinrich Heine, a miniaturist poet whose unique, characteristic mixture of wistfulness and irony, often tinged with self-pity, was ideal material for the genius of that wistful, ironic musical miniaturist, Robert Schumann. Every lover of Lieder must regret that Franz Schubert did not discover Heine until he was dying and composed only a few Heine songs in his Schwanengesang. But that regret is mitigated by the fact that Schumann gave so much attention to Heine during the brief, intense period when he was focused on songwriting. Dichterliebe is one of the finest song cycles in the German language--surpassed, if at all, only by Schubert's Schoene Muellerin and Winterreise; and the other songs in this collection are comparable in quality. Bostridge's light, expressive voice captures every musical and emotional nuance, and Drake plays masterfully the virtuoso piano part. --Joe McLellanCustomer Reviews:
Delightful Liederkreis & Dichterliebe Schumann.......2007-07-02
Op. 48 & 7 Lieder, I recently bought. It's such a delight listening to; the lightness, the precision
(and still there is a wonderful and continuous legato), the very selective use of vibrato (and thus
non-vibrato) as a means of expression, the treatment of the text, the perfect bel canto technique... Also my compliments to the excellent pianist, Julius
Drake; again, wonderfully played. Mr. Julias Drake and Mr. Ian Bostridge are a wonderful ensemble. When Mr. Bostridge stops, the singing is seemlessly continued by Mr. Drake.
I did not know Mr. Bostridge as a singer until I started looking for singers who had recorded `Dichterliebe'
and `Liederkreis' (Op. 39 BTW). Listening to a
few samples there conviced me to buy it. I can only say I am very grateful Mr Bostridge made this
recording. It means a great deal to me.
A final note: I firmly disagree with 'not my cup of tea'. I cannot agree with the assertion that
"The interpretation is flat, and does not have the depth that many German singers give to these songs." I own Dichterliebe sung by Quasthoff, Fischer-Dieskau, Fritz Wunderlich and Ian Bostridge (this recording).
By far I like Ian Bostridge's best. The interpretation is very delicate and the opposite of flat I would say. Flat is the interpretation of Quasthoff (although I highly respect him as a singer, but not particularly for his recording of Dichterliebe). The recording of Fischer-Diskau is quite interesting, musically speaking. Technically on the other hand I much prefer Ian Bostridge. Finally, the recordings of F. Wunderlich: I own both his final concert and a studio recording. Although the final concert recording is very bad, musically this one is by far surpassing the studio recording and is worth owning. What goes for the technique of Ian Bostridge goes for Mr. Wunderlich's; just wonderful.
Bostridge Good.......2006-11-10
Wonderfully dramatic singing. Both artists perform with intelligence and unity........2005-11-16
Heinrich Heine, a great German poet who remains highly regarded today, was an inspiration for many Romantic composers. Schubert only set a few of his poems simply because he did not become aware of Heine's work until he was already ill and dying. While Heine was thirteen years older than Schumann, they died the same year. In fact, Heine was born the same year as Schubert, although Schubert was born in January of 1797 and Heine in December.
The songs of opus 24 are about separation and longing. Nothing is ever a straightforward love song. This aching love is what attracted the Romantics. The poems are full of strong, but conflicted emotions and are written in a way that lends them well to musical settings. They tend to be short verses with a declamation that supports a singer's dramatic efforts and allows dramatic additions by the piano.
"Dichterliebe" (Poet's Love) opus 48 is one of the great song cycles ever written, probably after Schubert's masterwork's "Die Schöne Müllerin" and "Winterreise". While Schumann masterfully varies the songs so that it does not have the unremitting chill of Schubert's "Winterreise", it is a song cycle of lost love and ends with a desire for a coffin large enough to contain his love and sorrow.
There are other Schubert songs of Heine poems on this disk other than the two song cycles and they vary about topic, but are all full of drama and story telling of one kind or another. "Belsazar" opus 57 tells a story of the Babylonian king and the writing on the wall. "The Two Grenadiers" tells the story of two French soldiers captured by the Russians, one of whom dreams of fighting for his Emperor from the grave. There are several others.
I am a huge fan of Ian Bostridge. His voice is pure rather than light or colorless. (Colour, I suppose, since he is British.) His singing style is intelligent, very dramatic, and he varies its color depending on his interpretive purposes. He and Mr. Drake put on a wonderful recital of Schubert lieder here in Ann Arbor awhile back. They perform so wonderfully well together and I was surprised at the power, range, and control Mr. Bostridge has with his voice. It was one of the great afternoons of music I have ever experienced.
This is a wonderful CD and I recommend it strongly.
Not bad, not good........2005-10-20
It took me awhile to form an opinion, other than that I was nonplussed. The most famous moment, 'Ich grolle nicht', is a good example of a well-practiced but ultimately boring rendition of music that is simply beyond Bostridge's training or inclination or both. Yes, he hits all the notes with complete security, but there is no thrill, no conviction, no pain. All is very academic, as if grown in a hothouse or nurtured in a cloister. I agree with a previous reviewer that Bostridge's voice is perhaps better-suited to lighter, less passionate material. (I'm not familiar with his other recordings, but I might very much enjoy hearing him sing the music of Harty or Stanford.) His voice is thin, nasal, and with a very narrow color palette. It's a very good voice, but a very studied, calculated one that seems not to have internalized the text. I would prefer a few cracks or idiosyncracies rather than such a bloodless interpretation as this. Drake's accompaniment is a perfect match, and that's not much of a compliment. The recording's engineering is excellent, however.
Those looking for some excellent Schumann would do better to consider Terfel, Fischer-Diskau (despite transposition to lower keys), or the wonderful Wunderlich.
My least favorite Liederkreis Op. 24.......2005-09-29
For anyone who isn't thrilled by him, there is an overlapping recital of Schumann's Heine songs--oddly enough, also on EMI--by Thomas Hampson at his very best with Wolfgang Sawallisch as accompanist. For a tenor version sung by someone with a much fuller voice and less mannered approach to the texts, there is Christoph Pregardien on RCA/BMG. Having owned all three, I was happy to toss out this CD.

This generous selection of songs offers an overview of the wide variety of form, character, and atmosphere of Schumann's lieder, from darkly menacing, dramatic ballads to rapturous expressions of love, magical evocations of nature, and mysterious night pieces. The program includes both familiar favorites such as "Die beiden Grenadiere" and the cycle Liederkreis, and rarities hardly ever performed, such as the Husarenlieder and the three songs of Tragödie, the last a duet. The performances are beyond praise. Bryn Terfel's voice is of incomparable beauty, sonorous as an organ, powerful as an orchestra, yet capable of infinite tenderness, warmth, and delicacy; his technique and breath control are infallible. In "Der Contrabandiste," a bravura piece in a lighter vein, his virtuosity is stunning. It almost seems ungrateful to mention that some of his tempos are extremely slow, that his care for the text sometimes leads to excessive word painting, his operatic background to overdramatization. Fortunately, many songs justify this approach. Malcolm Martineau, a splendid pianist and ideal partner, balances sensitive support with leadership; his preludes and postludes are perfectly paced, organic parts of a whole. --Edith EislerAmazon.com

A great Bass-Baritone.......2003-04-27
Terfel does a wonderful job on Du bist wie eine Blume one of my favorite art songs as well as Widmung. Terfel has a wonderful sense of the German language and has a great understanding of how to sing it as well as to convey it through these songs. I would recommend his other cds as well because this shows off the classical side of his voice but what makes Terfel good is that he can do Broadway show tunes and then turn right around and do a Wagner aria from "The Flying Duthman." His voice is truly amazing

Excellent Treatment by great Lieder Specialist.......2006-06-02
After listening to Von Otter's releases on Schubert and Brahms' Lieder, I would rate this work equally as good from the point of view of the artist, but I enjoy Shubert more, because of the more familiar material, especially the heavenly 'Ave Maria'.
All personal blather aside, this is a very good album, whether your thing is Schumann or Von Otter.
Idiosyncratic but wonderful.......2006-04-28
My only reservations are that it's a little idiosyncratic in terms of style, and the performers play with the tempi excessively I feel. For example I find Susser Freund and Ich kann's nicht fassen, nicht glauben both too slow throughout, and Du Ring am meinem finger is completely dripping with emotion and rather cloying.
However the overall effect is beautiful and certainly the final movement of the songcycle is about the most tragically emotional you will ever here - when the piano comes in at the end to reprise the theme from the beginning most people will find their eyes pricking with tears.
RELAX JUST A LITTLE.......2005-06-13
It is a certain excess of fervour over urbanity that gives me just a few reservations about this disc as a whole, not just the Frauenliebe cycle. At its best the singing is simply wonderful, full of life and passion. Enthusiasm, generosity and wholehearted commitment are the essence of Schumann's personality, and these performers do not miss any of it. Schumann was a romantic among romantics, and not just as a lover and husband. As well as the `headline' song-cycle and a nicely selected set of Schumann's other songs, this recital contains his settings of 5 poems (in German translation) by Hans Christian Andersen. These have real atmosphere, both the words and the music, and the artists capture it very well indeed. They are also fully responsive to the range of moods in the works they have chosen. The English liner-note writer very properly highlights the Rueckert Volksliedchen as an exquisite example of its type, and von Otter and Forsberg give it just the right sense of lightness together with ardour.
The recording is hard to assess. There is a sense of spaciousness round the voice that seems to me quite exceptionally successful, what I'm not so convinced by is the way it treats the piano. The tone of the instrument is rich, and the playing is full-blooded as of course it should be and as one would expect from Forsberg. All the same, I would still have liked the general warmth restrained ever so slightly, both in the playing and in the way the recording captures it. I feel something similar about the singing, particularly at two points where von Otter's tone did not strike my ear as agreeably as it does elsewhere. The whole approach works a dream in the songs of Chaminade, and the disc of her chansons that these interpreters have done is one that I commend with a Schumannesque enthusiasm of my own. In Schumann's own music the fervour is abundant to superfluity, and this will not be lost if the interpreters just relax a little over it.
Recommended strongly, despite any minor qualifications. I would have wanted this disc just for Er, der Herrstlichste by itself.

Graham Johnson's complete Schubert song marathon for Hyperion reached the finishing post recently, but for anyone suffering withdrawal symptoms, the award-winning Schumann song series goes from strength to strength and now reaches its fifth volume with this fine program featuring the warmly lyrical baritone of Christopher Maltman, winner of the Lieder prize at the 1997 Cardiff Singer of the World competition. This disc is devoted to settings of Heine, and on the way to the celebrated Dichterliebe there are 20 songs, including four by Schumann's wife, Clara. There are so many delights to be found here, and the combination of a beautiful voice, Johnson's superbly sensitive playing, and the intimacy of Hyperion's benchmark recorded sound must surely propel this toward an awards ceremony or two. As usual, the disc comes with scholarly but completely accessible notes by Johnson. Sometimes it takes longer to read the notes than listen to the song, but it is always worth it--Johnson's insight is constantly illuminating. The Dichterliebe cycle is an intimate, deeply felt performance, winningly understated, and a great tribute to the intelligent musicality of both performers. It concludes a disc that absolutely bursts with goodies--77 minutes of bliss. --Keith ClarkeCustomer Reviews:
Restraint and overdoing it.......2004-02-13
That said, there are many magnificent recordings here, especially "Belsatzar," "Mein Wagen rollet langsam," "Die beiden Grenadiere," and "Die Lotusblume." Although this DICHTERLIEBE did not replace my favorite (as Johnson's SCHOENE MUELLERIN and WINTERREISE recordings from the Schubert collection did), it's a lovely and ethereal display of restraint and care well worth having.

Customer Reviews:
Schumann with beauty and interpretation.......2006-06-06
The use of word painting in Lieder is absolutely pivotal to the successful performance of the works. A lovely tone is not enough - it is never enough for this sort of singing. How blessed the listener is when the performer possesses not merely beauty of voice, but the heart for Lieder, the intellect for Lieder, the ability to portray both heart and intellect...
There is a find blend between the soprano and tenor voices in this recording, and the piano accompaniment could not be bettered. The individual Lieder are sung beautifully, with feeling, taste and exquisite understanding.
So schön ist es... wunderbare Musik, wunderbar gesungen.
