3 out of 5 stars Quite average.......2007-06-27

It's not a bad quality CD but the music is variable and different. Even though I like most types of music, I think the composition is just average.

5 out of 5 stars A world rhapsody.......2006-12-28

This is suberbly enhanced performance CD that captures Yo-Yo Ma and friends at their musical heights. The accompanying musicians, the Assasds, Paquito you-know-who, Kathyrn Stott and others add beautiful textures to the compositions of Piazzolla and Jobim to create a Latin influenced classical painting. This is music to play, go about your business at home and enjoy the different influences coming together. The sadness and happiness blend to reveal the emotions of life. Favorite songs include D'Rivera's "Afro" that sneaks up on you like breaking dawn to reveal the sunshine and life anew. Also Piazzolla's "Tango Suite" is a frenzied Yo-Yo Ma performance with suttle breaks on cello giving way to the Assadd's beautiful quite work on guitars to spike and peak your interest numerous times. This is good background music but it grabs your attention and makes you listen carefully so it can turn on you and be very demanding. Good for those quite times of work or reading.

5 out of 5 stars All that a performance can be........2006-02-11

Keep in mind that The studio version of this performance is nothing short of brilliant. The material includes pieces from the likes of Astor Piazzolla, Jobim and Paquito D'Rivera. Then you come to discover that there is a live concert version (and Dvd) of the disc. There is nothing like having your cake and your ice cream in the same bowl. Well that is what the release of this disc is, Cake and Ice cream with the cherry on the top.

Peace:
The*Hot*Wax*Kid

3 out of 5 stars Good music, engineering could be better.......2005-05-05

I bought the disk after hearing about the colaboration on NPR. The songs and performances are impecable, the variety is satisfying and fun. My only complaint is that the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired. Several times the recording level is not balanced between the instruments so that when listening to YoYo Ma playing, when joined by the saxaphone, it comes in too loud and ruins the mood.

I almost always prefer the live perfomances when the energy of the audience carries over to the performers. This is one case when I wish I had gotten the studio version.

5 out of 5 stars a classical-Latin music blend.......2005-04-22

Yo Yo Ma and his fellow musicians make beautiful music in this mellow adaptation of melodies that have their origin in Latin America.
The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of assorted and marvelous musicians toured the world with this music, and there is a cohesion between the performers and the material they are playing that is evident, and a pleasure to hear. One hears the applause, but it is not obtrusive, and the sound is excellent for a live recording.

Very impressive is the clarinet of 6 time Grammy Award winner and composer Paquito D'Rivera, who wrote 3 of the tracks, and shows his virtuosity and Cuban soul in 7 pieces, and I especially like his "Merengue".
Rosa Passos sings and plays guitar on 4 tracks, and has a soft, clear, and pleasing voice, and 3 of the songs she interprets so well are by her fellow countryman and Brazilian bossa nova artist Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Other musicians are Sergio and Odair Assad on guitars, Kathryn Scott on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Cyro Baptista on percussion. Yo Yo Ma is of course the household name among them, and is masterful in his interpretations throughout; I especially like him in D'Rivera's "Afro", a fascinating piece with some experimental sounds.
Other favorites for me are D'Rivera's "Wapango", and "Cristal" (Camargo Mariano), a rhythmic duet between Ma and Scott that is terrific.
This CD has the feel of a classical chamber concert, with the warmth of melodious Latin compositions, and is a nice and unique musical treat.
The foldout insert has liner notes by D'Rivera, recording info, and mini bios of Ma's 7 fellow musicians; total playing time is 72'07.

This package contains a bonus DVD, that includes 3 videos:
1. Piazzolla's "Libertango", from the original soundtrack of Sally Potter's film "The Tango Lesson", with clips of the great tango dancer Pablo Veron.
2. "Brasileirinho", by Waldir Azevedo, featuring Paquito D'Rivera, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
3. Jobim's "Chega de Saudage" interpreted by Rosa Passos, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
It also includes a very short interview with Yo Yo Ma.

5 out of 5 stars The best guitar duo in the world plays Lobos & Marlos Nobre.......2001-04-22

Sergio & Odair Assad made the world most famous guitar duo. They play in such a incredible virtuosistic and musical way, that you can hear them like a gigantic guitar, listining as a 12 strings guitar, never like two different instruments.I listen this beautiful CD many times, always astonished by the extraordinary musicality of the two musicians. The repertoire it is not the best, mixing some easy writing popular stuff with the work of two truly genius of the latin-american music, Villa-Lobos (Choros nº5/Lenda do Caboclo) and MARLOS NOBRE, the heir of Villa-Lobos, the world famous composer of our time in Latin-America, with the gems of the two-guitar repertoire, a truly favourite pieces, his "Cantiga de Cego", "Capoeira", "Martelo" and "Praiana" from his 15 pieces of the cycle "Ciclos Nordestinos I,II and III". This music it is the truly revelation and discover of this CD. The Duo Assad must now record the whole 15 pieces of this genial work from Marlos Nobre.

The Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti drew his inspiration for this music from time he spent with the Xingu Indians in the Amazon, and it's intended to invoke both their spirit and the experience of the jungle. Gismonti assembled some remarkable musicians for this 1977 recording--guitarist Ralph Towner, percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Collin Walcott, and saxophonist Jan Garbarek--but he uses them sparingly. The opening "Palacio de Pinturas" is a gorgeous duet between Gismonti's 8-string and Towner's 12-string guitars, a music so tonally rich that it suggests multiple geographic sources. "Raga," with Walcott on tabla, is more specific, with Gismonti's rapid-fire runs suggesting a sitar, but his use of percussive harmonics is a new element. The long final track is a remarkably varied suite. It begins with a light trio that has Garbarek's only appearance--a keening, soprano-saxophone solo--and includes "Sapain" for an ensemble of blown bottles with voices and wooden flute. Gismonti's fascination with shifting instrumental colors creates consistently interesting music, combining traditions and sources into a novel musical space. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another great late 70's album from Gismonti.......2004-12-13

Gismonti has been amazingly prolific in making many great albums from early 70's up to mid 90's.

Typically, his music is somewhat "rough" but very powerfull, emotive, rich, risky and bold during all the 70's. It is mostly acoustic work with many Gismonti's vocals too. It is a little difficult to access because of the complexity; but once you are in, it will stay with you forever. Most of this earlier work is under EMI or lately reissued under Gimsonti's CARMO labels.

The 80's are a transition period from pure acoustic to a mix between acoustic and electric instruments; Gismonti's vocals tend to disapear. Typically, the music becomes less provocative and more polite than earlier Gismonti's work. It is somewhat more civilized and more easy to access. Yet, the music remains highly sophisticated and creative; but with little less (good or bad?) surprise. Lots of these albums are under ECM label.

The 90's are a period where Gismonti's Group was founded. The music move towards more classical style: very polite, distinctive, fluid and elegant. Yet, there is still this amazing creativity, complexity and freshness of all Gismonti's works.
A few movie music albums are part of this period too (Kuarup, Amazonia). They tend to have more electronic effects but they stay into the elegant distinctive spirit of Gismonti's group latest compositions. Most of these albums are under ECM or CARMO labels.

About SOL DO MEIO DIA album, it is in the same spirit as DANCA DAS CABECAS album (check my other review). It is another really nice transition between earlier 70's albums and later 80's albums, retaining the best of the two styles. The melodies feature a lot of beuatiful sounds from Amazonia forest and in addition , this album has several beautiful vocals (that we may miss a little sometimes into the later purely instrumental albums). Although similar, this album is quiter, with not as much rage as DANCA DAS CABECAS. But in both cases, the melodies are very strong and very spirited: Gismonti may not know who he is, but he knows where he goes...
Please check my other reviews of Gismonti's albums if you wish.

5 out of 5 stars Un disco sobresaliente.......2000-07-04

5 out of 5 stars Incredible stuff..........2000-07-03

What a delightful album this is! There are others on which Egberto Gismonti plays more skillfully, but to my ears, at least, this is the Gismonti album that hangs together best as a unit.

Like Miles Davis's *Kind of Blue*, this is a wonderful album to play late on a hot summer night, when no one is sleepy but no one feels like doing anything more than listening: its contemplative mood, its intricacies, and its playfulness all come together perfectly at such a time. I also have daydreams of opening a coffeehouse and playing the piece "Café" from this album three times daily to set the mood. It would be ideal for the task: as background music, stimulating and even hummable without being obtrusive; but the occasional real connoisseur of music would forget the coffee and the conversation entirely and be transported to heaven in rapture by this piece.

Gismonti and Towner play their respective guitars, not in harmony, but in a sort of dialectical unity that rather suggests telepathy. Gismonti's flute-playing is the flute-playing of a faun-child without an agenda; his piano playing in "Coração" is introspective in a manner suggestive of Debussy, while in "Baião Malandro" it is showily Gershwinesque. Garbarek's sax realizes the lazily caffeinated spirit of "Café" flawlessly. Vasconcelos's and Walcott's percussion work somehow always make me imagine a troop of capybaras, stomp-dancing happily to the rhythms in a jungle clearing in the moonlight.

The group as a whole rises to the very highest sort of jazz -- all those exotic harmonic and rhythmic combinations that popular music would never dare attempt, all done with exquisite understatement, as if this is just a few musicians fooling around in somebody's living room without any thought of impressing an audience, or indeed of doing anything except having fun. And yet the back-and-forth between Gismonti and Vasconcelos on the final piece never fails to raise goose-bumps on my skin. Such incredible stuff. It makes me amazed to be human.

Although I am a big fan of Brazilian music this is the first time I come across Hamilton de Holanda. I have to say that not everyone can appreciate solo guitar performances and this was a highly pleasurable experience for me and for another Brazilian music fan we shared the experience together, well done and highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars um dos mais respeitados novos músicos brasileiros.......2006-11-11

Original e criativo, virtuosística e emocionante...these describe well this young carioca (born Rio d..) born of a musical family, and has become one of the new, what was called in USA and UK of their recent vintage improvisors, YOUNG LIONS of the brasil's instrumental musics scene.
This CD special, recorded in Milano, Italia.

SOLO bandolim, with some overdub. Hamilton exhibits again both his mastery of the instrument, but also his deep harmonies and incredible melodicism as he performs his own compositions, and of mestre Jobim ('Samba do Avião' and 'Eu Não Existo Sem Você',),
Morricone's lovely 'Cinema Paradiso' and an incredible version of a "Standard" now for Brasilian improvisors , Hermeto Pascoal's classic "Chorinho Pra Ele", the "Little Chorinho for him".
The bonus, The Italianu from Nice, France, the virtuoso of the sanfona, and fisarmónica (accordion!), Richard Galliano , 3 duet tracks, including Richard's homages to Brasil "Sertão" and "Sanfona".

Galliano, as Hamilton, a true master of his instrument, but both me NEVER let the virtuoistics get in the way of the incredible music!

Funky, meditative, and , just 100 % BRASILIAN! (with the French-italian kiss!)

Check out also, BOTH musician's small group recordings also, you will not be disappointed!

Many many more STARS than the Amazon allows, hahahaha!

4 out of 5 stars skillful evocative solo guitar.......2007-03-20

this guy takes a 2-note berimbau riff and turns it into a few guitar chords - then he really launches it. this is a lesson in how to take a little nylon string guitar and, using only your fingers, make it sound HUGE. there is some singing in portuguese - i dont understand it but it isnt bad - but to a guitar player this is revolutionary stuff.
