I've grown to love the beautiful music from my mother's homeland, "fado". This album by the group Madredeus is beautiful! The music is haunting and strange, while being very soothing. I understand and speak Portuguese, but everyone will get this. "O Paraiso" means "the paradise", this album surely lives up to it's title, enjoy!!!

Sometimes irritatingly New Age Euro-pop. More often a satisfying juxtaposition of Teresa Salgneiro's soaring, angelic soprano and a soulful accompaniment of classical guitars and synthesizers, in med-tempo and (merely) pretty melodies. Growing on me. Stand-outs: tr 6--A praia do mar (sounds like pop variation on simple, stately/courtly, yearning dance). tr 7--O fin da Estrada (for ambiguous meter); tr 8-Agora. tr 12-O sonho (voice soars over a web of strings in lovely melody). What I do understand is, for me, this newly discovered sound called fado. This is a mesmerizing tranquil cd that is pure spiritualism. This is some of the finest acoustic guitar ensembles I have heard in quite some time. The angelic voice, haunting at times, is one that enters your viscera.

I started out with one cd, then two, now I must have all of Maderdeus' work. It makes me want to go to Lisbon just to see if there is more of this lurking in the out-of-the-way back alley clubs.

I made the mistake of ordering two of these cd's at the same time. I was going to send one back. But after my wife heard this incredible music she snatched it up and put it in her vehicle.

This music is not for everyone. It is only for one person...you.

breathtaking, hauntingly beautiful.......2006-01-26

This whole album can be most aptly described as brilliant. Although the musical line-up is relatively simple, the music is amazingly rich and sophisticated in melodic content. There are almost no weak moments and each and every bit of the songs have timeless and uplifting aura that encapsulates you from the very beginning.The vocals by Teresa Salgueiro is a seminal example of how poetic lyrics can transcend beyond their inherent rendition. Along with flawless orchestration which overcomes the intricacies of merging strong instrumental content with female vocal, Madredeus excels in conveying the melanchonic mood of Portugal even for those who don`t speak Portugese. The overall effect is, however, universal and ethereal...

Breathtaking.......2004-08-13

I was introduced to this music by a friend of mine and wasn't sure I'd really like it, but when she began the music for me I just didn't know I could feel so uplifted by music. Teresa's voice is mesmerizing and a pure joy to listen to. This is one of their greatest collections. Although Andorinha da Primavera is my all-time favorite for personal reasons, the entire CD is great to listen to and find your own little private spot in your mind.

This was my first and even now my prefered record of these marvelous portuguese group.
I'm a huge brazilian Madredeus fan and very lucky to went in four concerts of them.
Fortunately for me it's easy to understand their lyricism and subjects.
Certainly the high point of their carrier.

PS: Highly recommended is the 2006 DVD "Mar", a live concert with the performance of the Lisboa Ballet

For a start, I have to praise Larry L. Looney's review about this album, and I have to say everything I can say about it is said by him already in a no better way.



Nothing to say about immaculate Teresa Salgueiro's voice, as well as the beautiful ensembre of Spanish guitars (tuned in a didderent way), cello and accordion. A very mediterranean but deep result and the perfect album for slow and nostalgic afternoons like this one for me.


The most reathtaking song of the album in my opinion is the amazing 'Cores do Sol' in which a slow synthesised start mixes the traditional acoustic sound with a rather new age, almost pop psychedelic feel. Another very deep and beautiful song is 'O Mar'. The thing that haunts me from 'Ven' is the lyrics as well as the soaring cello, emotional and strong, being the heartbeat of the song in itself.



The rest of the themes vary from fado's sadness and melancholy to joyful and peaceful natural evocations, and always the transparent voice of eresa Salgueiro and the simpleness but deepness of the lyrics lead you into a place full of time that goes slow, into your feelings and into perfect peace.

I've enjoyed Madredeus for some time now and I've always thought of their art as drawing from both chamber music and traditional musical influences.

A Wonderful Album -- A Great Discovery.......2004-10-08

Even though I don't know a word of Portugese the music, spirit and emotion transcend my limitations. It just sounds so right, good and true. Isn't that what great art is all about?

I wish I could read the other reviews by the people who anonymously trashed this album. Maybe they know something I don't but everyone I've played this album for has experienced the same sense of beauty, wonder and weight on the heart entwined in the vocals, instrumentation and production.

Go out live alittle, love and experience the bitter and sweet then buy this album to remind you what its all about.

BRIDGES.......2004-01-31

The bridges in this case are those that exist between the cultures of Brazil and Portugal - and Maria Teresa is here to celebrate them rather than build them. After all, they're already there, right? This album is a lovely, gentle celebration - but make no mistake about it: the celebration is a wholehearted one.

From the very first track, a beautiful a capella rendition of a traditional song from Portugal, it's evident that this recording is going to be something very special indeed - and track by track, it never disappoints. There are songs in this collection from both ends of the bridge, traditional and contemporary - songwriting luminaries such as Caetano Veloso, José Alfonso, Georges Moustaki, Ivan Lins, and others are represented. The recording is crystal-clear, all-digital - and the production is intimate.

Maria's voice is a lovely, expressive instrument - and the accompanying musicians are simply perfect: Francis Varis (accordion and accordina); Zé Luis Nascimento (an incredible array of percussive instruments); the amazing Toninho do Carmo (6- and 8-string guitars, vocals); and, on two tracks, Romolo Marques (double-bass). The arrangements are by Varis, Nascimento and do Carmo - they frame and present the songs (and Maria's voice) superbly, never sounding for a second like they're trying to outplay each other. The slow numbers flow gently, and the fast numbers cook delightfully.

This is not an album of fado - although there are a couple of examples of that song form included here. It is an all-inclusive delight, fine songs presented in an acoustic setting and sung by a talented singer. I've not heard Maria Teresa before - but I'll be looking forward to hearing her again.

I did not understand the language, but no matter. The discs will be played over and over again such is the feeling of warmth generated by the singer. As with any foreign language offering there will be limited appeal. In this case it is a great shame.
