Exotica for the home. Exotica for the car........2007-06-20
This cd literally transports you to the jungle rich islands of the Pacific. Good stuff.
Best of the Best.......2007-05-15
I've always enjoyed the sounds of exotica and especially when skillfully done by martinb Denny. This CD compiles the best from his long career. The folksat Ultra Lounge have put together a really enjoyable and easy listening CD. Be sure to mix a Mai Tai before listening.
Jungle Jim adventures.......2007-02-03
You can image yourself immersed in the jungle with unseen creatures making weird and wonderful sounds. Truly a curious and novel album. Nicely packaged with a beaut booklet with pictures and interesting info. A great addition to my lounge music collection. Sonics brilliantly mastered by Bob Norberg.
Exotica Please.......2007-01-17
Martin Denny usually strikes you with his irrestible sound. Here the music is great and the sonics are as well. What more can you ask for - except if you find this kind of music too exotic for your taste. Live a little - if "Misirlou" doesn't perk up your soul, I frankly don't know what can?

Customer Reviews:
Enough with the awful bird calls!.......2006-06-05
There's no doubt that the music that Martin Denny and his group produce can be very pleasant to listen to. Unfortunately, this pleasantness is marred by the constant and awful bird calls. I wish that Denny's music could be re-mastered and the bird calls left out of the mix so that we could REALLY enjoy the music. I prefer to listen to Arthur Lyman's nicer charts.
ANOTHER GREAT IMMORTAL EXOTICA.......2005-07-16
I recommend you get all of Martin Denny's albums for an immediate return to glory and bliss every time you hear it in your mix.
Wonderful CD to put you in a tiki mood.......2002-08-04
After discovering Martin Denny on KaZaA, I simply had to have more of his music. This is an awesome compilation....it really gets you into a tiki vibe! High quality sound...good linear notes...just an all-around incredible experience. So pick this CD up, sip a mai tai and party!
Memories of Hawaii.......2002-03-23
When I was stationed in Hawaii, the fifties, Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman, August Colon, played at Don the Beachcombers and this was a very special hangout for me because of the great music. I think I have every title they recorded.
I Finally Found The Genre!.......2001-03-24
When I was a young girl, my dad would play these albums on Saturday night and I can still remember how much I loved them. Unfortunately, I didn't know how to find them since they had a class all their own and it really had no name. (even ... doesn't have an 'exotica' genre.) Now that I have found out all these great exotica performers like Martin Denny you can believe me when I say I will end up buying every one I can find. They were New Age Ambient before there was such a thing! (my "other" favorite sounds today)

Customer Reviews:
The best best-of compilation of Martin Denny's music.......2000-03-17
This disc predates Rhino's Denny compilation by nearly a year, and outperforms it in just about all dimensions but price and availability. For your money, though, you get an incredible collection of *28* musical tracks and a bonus Martin Denny stage intro, all clocking in at 73'4" of Exotica. Happily the overlap with the Rhino issue is minimal.
Although Rhino's insert booklet features more background info on Denny and his combo, this EMI release includes a folded insert sheet, mostly in Japanese, that includes an excellent Exotica discography. Besides the 39 LP entries for Denny, there are 34 entries for early Denny combo vibemaster Arthur Lyman. Also included is a short list of some of Les Baxter's exotica-oriented recordings, and a list of discs produced by Denny. Though there are a few missing entries (notably Exotica covergirl Sandy Warner's solo) the list of additional records "for you pleasure musical enjoyment" is *excellent*, including discs from Hawaii Calls, Warren Barker, Cal Tjader and YMO, to name just a few. The insert also includes black & white miniature reproductions of 18 of Denny's albums. The cover of the insert is a beautiful color reproduction of the first Exotica album cover (with a little editing on the lettering to retitle the album).
The CD's compiler, Yann Tomita, has done a good job of picking tracks, though many of my favorites are missing. This best-of covers more time than the Rhino issue. The disc begins with Denny's signature version of Les Baxter's "Quiet Village" and moves through most of Denny's 13-LP Exotica catalog, including tracks from later LP's (ignored on the Rhino compilation) such as "Exotic Percussion" (my favorite Denny LP and track, "Moonlight and Shadows") and the extremely rare "Exotic Moog" (featuring the Moog version of "Quiet Village"). Also included is some of Denny's later, uhm, less exotic material such as the cover of "Sukiyaki." Tomita has included a good slice of Denny's career, giving emphasis to the Exotic, percussive material, but also including a sprinkling of the more traditionally piano-based pieces, Denny's later experiments with strings, and so on.
Soundwise... the lead off version of "Quiet Village" is missing a bit of the high-end, some of Denny's heavier piano pounding (big blocky chords ala Brubek) gets a little indistinct, and there's a little harsh edge on some of the louder vibraphone passages, but for the most part these tracks have their cymbals and birdcalls rendered clearly. The delicacy of the various temple bells and chimes is surprisingly well preserved on the mid-to-late 50's master tapes they must have used. The drum work, too, has a nice sound to it, in all its various forms (i.e., African, South American, etc). Harvey Ragsdale's bass also comes through the transfer quite nicely.
For those simply wishing a taste of Exotica, the Rhino issue is probably the better choice, due to it's lower price and wider availability, but for the Denny fanatic, this is a must-have item.
Now, anyone want to translate the Japanese language insert for me?

Customer Reviews:
EXOTIC ISLANDS WAS THE POST-WAR RELIEF.......2005-07-16
After the war people just wanted peace and Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman met their need. I recommend the BEST OF, the VERY BEST OF (both artists) along with all the other exoticas.
Great songs, fantasy dreamweavers, and island romance.......2001-06-17
My funny valentine, and harbor lights are well rendered in only the way Denny can do it. We kiss in the shadows from "the king and I" is a strangely haunting exotic vocal tune, that I love. Highly recommended, as with most Denny.
A poor selection.......1999-11-30
Most people want Martin Denny for his tropical music-complete with screeching birds and jungle drums. This selection is bland and does not give you what you expect. Try another album.

Martin Denny - "Bachelor In Paradise: The Best Of Martin Denny".......2007-01-01
"Bachelor In Paradise: The Best Of Martin Denny" showcases music from the influential pioneer of Exotica, who helped shape the musical exploration of record buyers from the late-1950's and beyond. His style is a cross-fertilization between world jazz and Pacific Island music. This definitive collection showcases Martin Denny's music portfolio, including "Quiet Village", "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Pearly Shells", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Little Bird". An essential introduction to the world of Exotica, and a perfect complement to any music enthusiasts' collection.
