4 out of 5 stars another delight.......2000-09-19

...from Rhythym Music... "Cape Cerde is the world's most beautiful music chemlab and Simentera stands out as a shining example of the wonderful new creations that roots, when carefully tended, may bring forth". This is not my first CD of Cape Verde or Simentera music. I often will buy a new CD without having heard a track. I have never been disappointed. This new CD continues to satisfy. This new one is a bit different from previous works but well worth adding to your Cape Vered collection.

5 out of 5 stars CD Booklet LusoMania Transatlantica:.......2007-07-05

The Portuguese seafarers of the 15th and 16th centuries were known the world over as "lusiadas", and the inhabitants of Portugal are commonly known as "lusitanos". The former Portuguese colonies in South America and Africa, where Portuguese is still widely spoken, despite the advent of independence, are often referred to collectively as "lusophone" countries.
Although the lusophone world is spread far and wide it nevertheless retains a special unity. Portugal has always had closer bonds with South America than with Europe, and Brazilian culture seems much closer to Africa than to the rest of Spanish-speaking South America. And what better expression of this unity than music?
In Brazil, as in Africa, Portuguese instruments like the viola - a 10-12 string type of guitar, the accordion, the pandeiro drum and above all the small four-stringed guitar known as the cavaquinho made very early entrances onto the local musical scene.

Despite the distinct flavour of musical genres such as morna (Cape Verde), gumbé (Guinea Bissau), rebita (Angola), samba and forró (Brazil), there is an unmistakable "LusoMania" that is common to them all. The singer Bonga from Angola alludes to a samba feeling in his music that is immediately recognizable to Brazilians. The urbane Brazilian samba of the 20s and 30s, played with guitars and cavaquinho, sounds perfectly familiar to the people of the Cape Verde islands, and the accordion playing of musicians like Oswaldinho from Brazil, with its exotically different rhythm yet familiar melodic phrasing strikes a common chord with quite a few , concertina players from the Ribatejo region in, Portugal.

What makes the new music of the lusophone countries so special are its links with numerous Iberian, African and (central/south-) American traditions, on the one hand, and its openness to experimentation with different sounds, both popular and mainstream, on the other. Chico Science, for example, has succeeded in achieving what might seem musically impossible: combining the African based maracatu rhythms of "Nação Zumbi" from Recife with Brazilian rap and electronic sounds, thereby creating a most progressive world music style. The group's motto has always been, "from the suburban mud (mangue) of Recife to the world." Their name for this ambitious cross-fertilisation is "mangue beat".

Others too, like Maio Coope from Guinea-Bissau, have an avowed desire to transcend the borders of their country and "embrace the world". In common with poets and singers from the entire lusophone world, the group refer again and again to a feeling which is the very essence of "lusitanism"; saudade or yearning, homesickness, hope, love, all rolled into one. This is where the role of the music, as the bearer of a message which cannot be conveyed by words alone, is crucial. As one song from Guinea-Bissau puts it, "yesterday, memories and longing, tomorrow, hope and perhaps joy as well."
And "today" it's music that counts. So let's go LusoMania ... !

This is simply a phenominal disc. Traditional yet modern, Raiz provides an experience second to none. Although less well known than Cesaria Evora and bana, Simentera speaks, in many ways, to the modern Cape Verde better than they do. Buy it, sit back and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Like a Cape Verdean "Association," this group has it all!.......1999-09-24

I spent two summers in Cape Verde and from the moment I stepped foot on the island of Santiago (the home of Praia, the capital), I fell in love with Cape Verdean music. While the styles of morna and funana are probably what Cape Verde's most well-known for, Cape Verdean music has a great range. That is evidenced in Raiz by Simentera. Even if you don't understand Cape Verdean Criolo (a mix of West African languages and Portuguese), you'll love the exquisite way in which the group's voices and instruments blend together. I actually heard this album for the first time playing on a PA system in a Cape Verdean grocery store. Considering the impression it made on me then, imagine how great it'll sound on your home stereo!

5 out of 5 stars Cabo Verde's Soul in Sound.......1999-03-17

With first listening of this disc we were amazed at the incredible blending of voices, music, and rythms. Then after six months of listening we found ourselves immersed in the soundtrack of our year. Simentera seamlessly blends roots of Africa, rythms of Cape Verde into a sound that transcends borders, time and hearts every where we have played the CD. This is a must buy, must share!
