4 out of 5 stars Good intro.......2004-05-24

Pretty decent CD. A good overview, but not fabulous. I suppose any compilation like this will not please all.

5 out of 5 stars All the greats of the genre.......2003-05-02

If you are a fan of S/A music, this Cd will make your mouth water. If you don't have a clue, it's great introduction. All the greats (minus Hugh Masakela) are here. The Mahotella Queens make you want to stomp, Ladysmith Black Mambazo ring out like heavenly angels, and Miriam Makeba performs some early wonders with the Skylarks. The track "Grooving Jive" sums things up nicley. But hardcore fans of the music get a bonus with the inclusion of the tune that started it all, Solomon Linda's "Mbube" (1939) which has since mutated into "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." But enough of that, just get it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Music of the South Comes to Life!.......2002-03-06

This CD, yet another excellent compilation from the Rough Guide series, focuses on the musical traditions of South Africa, which have become fairly popular in the west in recent years. As one would expect, there is a track featuring the a cappella sounds of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and the heavenly voice of singer Miriam Makeba, but South African music is far more diverse than just that. There are such famous South African performers as the Soul Brothers, Boyoyo Boys and Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens, who all give excellent performances on this CD. Reggae has its roots in African traditions, and this becomes more appearent after you hear the South African reggae stylings of Lucky Dube. Jazz also has its roots in the African continent, and this can be seen in such songs as "Jive Township", "Yaze Yangala", "Celebration" and "Groovin Jive No. 1". All of these, while uniquely African, feature a jazzy groove which cannot be denied. If you listen to this CD, you'll find yourself dancing along to it yourself after a while. Its contaigous. Over all, this is an excellent CD, giving some insight into the diverse world of South African music today.

4 out of 5 stars Rough Guide's South African Collection is a Good Start.......2000-12-31

The Music of South Africa, a Rough Guide product, offers a nice array of talents from this talent-rich country. This could be a good CD for those interetsed in exploring the styles and sounds of South Africa. If it further intrigues the listener, it can become a springboard for more collecting of the lisatner;s favorites. Lucky Dube showcases the reggae sound. Dube has several fine albums. Mahlathini and the Mahhotella Queens, Miriam Makeba, West Nkosi, the Soul Brothers, and the African Jazz Pioneers are legendary in their country. Spokes Mashinyane is the Chuck Berry of pennywhistle music. Like most collections, significant artiists are left out. A more expanded edition may want to include Ringo, Busi Mhlongo (one of the greatest voices on the planet), Stimila, Bayette, and a "kwaito" band. This collection is a very good sampling, however.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely enthralling!.......2006-06-03

I seldom write reviews for Amazon because I don't have a lot of time, but this CD is one of the best I've heard in the past several years. I've enjoyed every single track--for me it's definitely the best of the 30 Rough Guide collections I've heard to date. Fifteen years ago, listening to a program about "African music" on NPR I started chasing what I'd heard -- and now I know it was South African. Reminds me a bit of modern Brazilian jazz. My ears are reveling in all these sounds and beats. I want more!

3 out of 5 stars file under 'easy listening'.......2003-09-09

i made the mistake of thinking that this would be african music, but every time i play i swear it i swear it's just another jazz festival gathering. i am absolutely certain that there are more South African jazz musicians with character than are represented here. i would say if you like jazz, then sure, but if you're looking for good African music, check out the rough guides to Senegal & Gambia, Cape Verde (sweet!! bluesy and jazzy), or Music of Africa.

5 out of 5 stars More Good stuff from S/A.......2003-05-02

Strictly speaking, this Cd isn't just S/A jazz but what is commonly known as "Township Jive, " the Jazz and R&B flavored music of South Africa's ghettoes. But whatever you call it, it's VERY good stuff and this Cd will please both initiates and longtime fans of the genre with its melodic and rhythmic selections. The selection with Miriam Makeba and her early group the Skylarks is particularly appealing. If you have this already, it's a good way to turn your friends to this wonderful genre of music. Show them what Paul Simon was talking about.

5 out of 5 stars As close to indespensible as a CD can be.......2002-08-20

From first to last track, this CD is an outstanding collection of music which is either unavailable elsewhere, or very, very difficult to find (at least in Chicago). Every song on this collection is pure joy: South African pop sensibilities flavoring rich jazz. A tape of this CD is one of my steadfast driving partners, remaining in my car as other titles shuffle in and out. My only complaint is that there isn't more: I want another disk!

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent selections!.......2001-07-25

This CD is a must for anyone into Jazz music, from Contemporary Jazz to Classical, this album is one of a kind. With the various bands and sounds, you can get a good feel for what it might be like being in South Africa at a club enjoying a nice meal. With 16 songs on the album and a total of 73 minutes of playing time, you are bound to enjoy loads of fun and relaxation!

4 out of 5 stars The roots of so much South African popular music........2004-08-30

Here are the groovy guitar riffs, the low groan of singers like Mahlatini to the high tremolo warble of Joseph Shambala leader of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
South Africa is justly famous for its vocals, especially its group singing: ROUGH GUIDE TO SOUTH AFRICAN GOSPEL shows why and how.

5 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the style!.......2003-08-28

I'm not, personally, a huge fan of the South African gospel/group vocal style... (Living in Berkeley in the 1980s, I kind of got overexposed to the secular version, exemplified by groups such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, et al...) Still, I can recognize a class act when I see one, and this collection of harmonically rich, dense, soulful religious songs, sung primarily in Zulu and Sotho, is an excellent introduction to the genre. Drawing on the archives of several record labels, this concentrates mainly on recordings made in the 1980s and '90s, but also dips lightly into the '60s and '70s, when the music was going through a period of intense development and modernization. If you like the style, or you're just curious what it's all about, this is a fine disc to try out.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Simon + The Lion King.......2004-11-23

I hope my title doesn't offend - Paul Simon and the Lion King are two things that I thought of after first listening to this CD, given my limited exposure to South African music. It does have a unique sound with great musicianship. There are many interesting details in the music. I suspect on repeated listenings (I'm on #7 about now) I will like this music even more. I recommend this CD.
