"Salsa dura" isn't simply a genre of music. It's a feeling, born of a certain people in a certain time. In this case--the sounds of dancehalls and hotel ballrooms of the Bronx, Spanish Harlem and Brooklyn in the 1970's. The lively Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC attempts to encapsulate that energy in an hour's worth of music. A heady task, but the collection does a good job of highlighting the premiere showmen of the genre. It's being kept alive today by all the classic and contemporary artists featured on the disc. Los Soneros Del Barrio, who formed in 1999, showcase tight grooves during "Babaila;" and bandleader Eddie Palmieri, whose career spans more than half a century, offers the sublime "Lo Que Traigo Es Sabroso II." Elsewhere, Jimmy Bosch's appropriately titled "El Embajador" ("The Ambassador") commands respect; and Joe Quijano & His Conjunto Cachana do right by the standard "I Get a Kick Out of You." Horns blare, voices wail and you can practically see the twirls across the dance floor. The only quibble is a common one in the genre: a lack of female voices. Thankfully, Las Estrellas Cobo's "Don Ramon" features the confident swagger of Yousie Barbara. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars DURAZNO SALSEANDO.......2007-06-24

This is a compilation of what I consider the dancing side of this style. Salsa Dura: the real sound that had been eclipsed by "salsa romántica" and "salsa erótica" since the '80s. ¿What`s "salsa romántica"?: romantic-pop-songs with a soft air of guaracha in the background, just to be used in TV novels. ¿And why "salsa erótica"?. ¿Because of the lyrics, meaning love and sex?. ¡¡¡Here is the erotic explossion, giles!!!. Here in the tasty rythm, in the piano riffs, in the powerful horns, in the soulful vocals and in the "descargas". Eddie Palmieri, ¡un capo!. Para gozar y bailar... ¡HARD SALSA for ever!

4 out of 5 stars Ya Wanna Dance?.......2007-04-25

Ok! So you thought that salsa was dead and gone in NYC... but you're wrong. Salsa is alive and well. This compilation cd is a great example. This release, Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC, more than lends itself as proof solid that you don't have to go to France or Japan to enjoy salsa. All the musicians in the cd, with perhaps the exception of the ever travelling Eddie Palmieri, regularly play in NYC. The tracks are all well chosen and lend themselves well to the dance floor. If you are new to salsa you'll pleasantly surprised, if you're already musically baptized, jump in the waters once again. Recommended

I bought this CD as an introduction to Salsa. I have always loved it, but I didn't know much about the various artists. This is a terrific way to jump right in! There are some infectious songs on here that won't get out of your head...and it's a very good thing! Favorite tracks are 2,3,6, and #7 - the best one!!

This is a great collection of Salsa. Terrific cuts. Excellent to listen to and to dance to.

I just started ballroom dancing a few months ago. In addition to my private lessons I took some extra salsa dance lessons. This was a great help for practicing at home between lessons. I don't speak Spanish, so I don't know what the artists are singing. But the tempos were easy to follow for a begining dancer.

Merengue--in all its hip-swiveling glory--is the focus of this edition of the Rough Guide series, an eclectic experiment dedicated to schooling the uninformed (read: Anglos) on globe-trotting cultures and sounds. It's an expectedly festive mix, from the opening strains of Cana Brava's galloping "Eres Mentirosa" through Milly Quezada's throaty, often thrilling, reading of "Caro" and on to Los Tupamaros' "La Negra Quiere Bailar," a sterling salsa/merengue hybrid. The pace falters a bit with Victor Roque y La Gran Manzana's "Ven Junto a Mi," but it's due more to poor sound quality than anything else. Oro Solido's frenetic "Verano Solido" is a rousing party-starter, and Los Ocho de Colombia offers "El Mamboleo," a modern, soul-infused take on the genre. The collection's glaring lack of female performers, however, is surprising. Aside from Quezada, women are relegated to backing vocals. Olga Tanon, Miriam Cruz and Las Chicas Del Can would likely have something to say about that. --Joey Guerra

    Album Description

A fast-paced Latin dance synonymous with the Dominican Republic, merengue is hugely popular throughout Latin America. Originally played in trios, the urban sound that is today's merengue is played on the saxophone, the electric guitar, the two-headed tambora drum and marimba. Filling dancefloors across the Spanish-speaking world, this album features some of the best contemporary merengue artists around, including Chichi Peralta, Caña Brava and La Mákina.

Artists include - Chichi Peralta Y Son Familia, Rikarena, Milly Quezada, La Mákina, Victor Roque Y La Gran Manzana, Los Toros Band, Los Tupamaros, Caña Brava, Eddy Herrera feat. Danny Boy, Oro Sólido, Los Ocho De Colombia, Azucarado and Agapito Pascual

Cuba, Puerto Rico, and New York gave us the rumba, bomba, plena, and salsa, but the rhythms of the merengue and bachata from the Dominican Republic are the fastest-growing musical genres from the Caribbean. This CD is a snappy introduction to that island's national beats. The merengue originated in its neighbor country Haiti in the late 19th century, and was developed in the towns of Cibao and Santo Domingo. It's marked by lighting-fast beats, zesty accordion and saxophone riffs, and infectious accents by percussion instruments like the guiro and maracas. This CD includes the "Perico Ripiao" merengue heard on "Que Pena" by Samuelito Almonte y Su Conjunto, some big-city techno-rengue sounds on Antony Santos's saucy "Coheli Ahi," and some New York-style rap-a-rengue on Blas Duran's hip-hop/house track "Crei." The bachata, which grew out of the Spanish bolero genre, is a slower, more syncopated sister to the merengue, with its high-tuned, central African guitar strains. It too comes in many moods and grooves, from the distinctive nasal vocals of Luis Segura's (the legendary Papa de la Bachata) "Los Celos" to the amorous love tones of Nelson Roig's "El Dueño de la Noche." This collection is a good sonic snapshot of this island's musical treasures. --Eugene Holley Jr.

    Album Description

This Rough Guide presents two essential beats from the Dominican Republic, merengue and bachata. With its driving 2/4 beat, merengue's sexy rhythms, the heart beat of the Dominican Republic's streets, encourages hips to swing in every dance hall in the Latin Caribbean and its popularity has spread to the USA and South America. From the north of the island's countryside comes, the largely undiscovered, bachata. This soulful music of the poor and lovers, with its guitar riffs reminiscent of Central Africa and emotional male vocals, is a Latin secret worth uncovering. This long awaited Rough Guide brings together the greats of merengue and bachata with talented new artists, to supply a pulsating collection introducing a piece of the Dominican Republic to dance floors around the world.

i'm a huge fan of the rough guide series, but this one just doesn't do justice. if you're considering this one, go for rough guide to cumbia (5 stars for sure) or samba (5 stars as well). If you just like a good beat without the fancy dancing i recommend the rough guides to afro-peru or central america, both unique and worth your time and money.

There's something inherently wrong about an anthology of Puerto Rican salsa that fails to include the genre's most notable exponents—namely, El Gran Combo and La Sonora Ponceña. Fortunately, this otherwise worthy entry in the excellent Rough Guide series makes up for that near-fatal omission by including a number of legendary Puerto Rican expatriates. The expected tracks by Eddie Palmieri (a recent number from the pianist's revamped La Perfecta reunion) and Tito Puente (the joyful Latin jazz nugget "Espresso Por Favor") are complemented with tunes by lesser-known but equally important artists, from timbalero Manny Oquendo and Libre (the orgiastic dance jam "Qué Humanidad") to the very best salsa singer of all times, the late Héctor Lavoé, joined here by partner in crime Willie Colón on the smoldering "Qué Bien Te Ves" and the fatalistic "Todo Tiene Su Final." Reaching out beyond the confines of salsa, the compilation devotes a handful of songs to the bomba and the plena, Puerto Rico's infectious--and achingly beautiful-- folkloric genres. --Ernesto Lechner

Puerto Rico has become home to some of the most dynamic rhythms in the world. The Rough Guide To Salsa De Puerto Rico traces the genre's development both in Puerto Rico and the Nuyorican communities of the United States. This collection showcases its most innovative musicians, featuring the music of some of the biggest salsa legends, and also follows how the island's folkloric styles (such as bomba and plena) were instrumental in the development of salsa.

Artists include: Willie Colon, Jose Alberto (El Canario), Sonora Poncena, Orchestra Harlow & Ismael Miranda, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Los Pleneros De La 21, Manny Oquendo's Libre, Plena Libre, Trupo Y Zaperoko, Jimmy Bosch, Nava, Yomo Toro, Paracumbe and Hector Lavoe & Willie Colon

    4 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2006-04-26

Another reviewer seems to miss the whole point of the Rough Guide collections. As the subtitles says, "pure latino: classic salsa to roots plena." The Rough Guide series in known for stretching their listeners' common notions of what a particular country sounds like musically. For example, the Rough Guide to Japan isn't just koto and shakuhachi; it includes Japanese music generally unknown in the West. In this case, I suspect that the "New Yorkers" represented here consider themselves Puerto Rican, especially when it comes to their art form. I was quite happy to see Nava represented. I love his music, but it's quite difficult to find more than one of his CDs in the U.S. The selection by Cico Mangual is a terrific representation of the African roots in Puerto Rican music. No collection will make everyone happy, but there are plenty of other collections out there that will satisfy salsa "purists."

    2 out of 5 stars Awful Compilation.......2004-08-23

This is more of a soft guide to salsa de New York! How on earth can you have Yomo Toro and Plena Libre representing Puerto Rican salsa? And aren't Tito Puente, Jimmy Bosch and Eddie Palmieri New Yorker's? Let's not forget that Jose "El Canario" Alberto is DOMINICAN! You cannot make any rough guide to salsa de Puerto Rico compilation without the maestro's themselves! Namely "La Sonora Poncena", "Cheo Feliciano", "Ismael Rivera", "Pete (el conde) Rodriguez", "Andy Montanez", "Hector Lavoe", "Ray Barretto", "Ismael Miranda", "Willie Rosario", and "El Gran Combo". All of which are MISSING from this weak compilation (with the exception of Hector Lavoe)!

Whoever put together The Rough Guide to Latin America discs must have been spoilt for choice, so numerous are the Rough Guide compilations from this area. But this box still packs a powerful punch. Cuban Son makes the perfect backdrop to Buena Vista excitements, showing how long and consistent this art form's history is. Its opening track is a sweetly magical "Guantanamera" by the Septeto Nacional, but other tracks dig back in time--to the earthy voice of Maria Teresa Vera and the high exaltation of Beny More, and to the democratically individualized tones of the Familia Valera Miranda. Fitting that the final track should come from Los Jubilados--the Old-Age Pensioners--in this genially gerontocratic form. Meanwhile, the Salsa Dance album will show 21st-century salsa freaks how deep their own roots go, with classic tracks from the 1960s and '70s. Here you'll find everything from the street-kid exuberance of Joe Cuba to the sumptuous harmonies of Willie Colon's brass arrangements; from the acoustic of long-gone ballrooms to the overheated excitement of salsa halls today. And while salsa's roots reside in New York, Samba reflects the music's origins 500 years earlier in Salvador (Bahia), Brazil. This is rougher stuff, as befits a poorer country. It sometimes sounds almost gnarled (as in Dona Ivone Lara's number), but is marvelously infectious as a result. One samba de terreiro from the 1940s--designed to be played when the group is off carnival duty--positively reeks of sun and booze. The final track, by Luciana Mello, unfolds over the sound of waves crashing on the beach: one more reminder of the beauty and variety of a tradition before the advent of electronic technology. The final CD--The Rough Guide Collection--is all you need to launch yourself on further seas of exploration to every corner of the globe. --Michael Church
