In 1993, when Shaggy successfully reworked the Prince Buster ska classic "Oh Carolina," he was on the cusp of creating a hot, new ska/pop fusion. Unfortunately, he opted to become a pop-reggae novelty act like Snow. Shaggy's fourth album certainly won't win over new fans or appeal to reggae purists and Capleton enthusiasts, but that's fine by him. While there are no immediate club anthems in the "Boombastic" or "Oh Carolina" vein, Shaggy's coarse vocal delivery shines on the sweet, Latin-music-inspired "Chica Bonita." Likewise, "Not Fair"--where he boasts that he'll take a woman "to the clouds without going downtown"--has Hit Single written all over it. On the downside, Shaggy's rap-reggae flow doesn't match the production values of the R&B production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. On "Lonely Lover," Shaggy and Next's T-Lo bastardize a classic Main Ingredient song, while on "Dance and Shout," he distorts the Michael Jackson legacy by sampling "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)." --Dalton HigginsCustomer Reviews:

Shaggy's Most Famous Cd.......2003-06-12
The cd pro's - 90 percent of the tracks are great dance tracks, and are just fun. Single's such as "Angel" and "it Wasn't Me" don't age. Plus, each song doesn't repeat too much, and each track is a good length, (for a total of 53:07 minutes on the cd). The chorus's of most of the song's are very catchy (Think "Luv Me, Luv Me"). The whole album would work perfectly for a party. The lryic's are also pretty good. Even though I don't real care for some of the lryic's for tracks like "Freaky Girl". Tracks such as "Keep'n it real", "Angel", "Dance & Shout", "It wasn't me", "Luv me, Luv me", and "Hope" are all worth listening to at least once.
Cd cons - Because of Shaggy's limited vocal range, most of the song's end up sounding pretty smiliar, (in fact "Angel" is probably the only song that doesn't really sound the same vocally). Tracks like "Hot Shot", "Freaky Girl", and "Hey Love" could have been better. Also, as it starts to get past track 10, the song's become filler's. That doesn't mean they're horrible, it just mean's they aren't as fun, as the other tracks. In fact the beat of the song's changes a lot at that point.
Although Shaggy, will never have as much sucess with other works, as he did with this, it doesn't mean he is a bad artist, or a one hit wonder. This cd remind's me of the newer artist Sean Paul, who has a simliar style. I listen to probably 8 to 10 tracks on this album, when it's in the cd player, so it's definitly a good album, it just could be better. If you buy this, I don't think you'll be disappointed, but you may be suprised by some of the seriousness of some of the tracks. After all is said and done, this is still a good album, by a decent artist.

Hey look guys, Kermit the Frog released a reggae album.......2003-06-12
Considering this mindless junk "reggae" must have Bob Marley rolling in his grave. This is just some nasal-voiced bleating over an overused R&B beat. This guy has at least one of the most ANNOYING voices I have ever heard. This is not singing, people! Nor is it reggae! It's just another dumb pop album that won't mean a thing in two weeks. Want real reggae? Buy Bob Marley or even Sublime. Don't waste your hard-earned money on this ridiculousness.
It's "Not Helpful" clicking time again.
Good Collection but.................................2002-02-13
This cannot be true for the version on this album as it sounds absolutely nothing like Janet nor like the Track that was on the "How Stella got her Groove back" Soundtrack. It may just be my copy of the disc, but somehow I doubt it. This fact prevents me from giving this release the five stars it rightly deserves.
Other than this song, the album is "SWEET". His Maxi Priest collaborations among others are timeless and the two versions of "Mr. Boombastic" don't hurt this compilation either.

That Time Already?. . ........2006-11-07
What a difference a year makes?!
Just a week shy of a year later and Kartel appears on just 3 tracks, with even one of those being a combination with recent Greensleeves signee Mavado. Things have definitely changed in the order for Greensleeves as well, as their roots output goes higher and higher, their once so annoyingly superfluous stream of riddim albums has slowed and Vybz Kartel has even threatened to leave (and get a new name). They have added Busy Signal who just released his quality debut, Step Out and reportedly Mavado whose debut is set for sometime early next year (which, in Greensleeves' dancehall terms, means next summer). Ward 21 fled the camp for some obscure Japanese label to release their latest album King of the World, you can expect Macka Diamond's next record probably in 2008-'09 if at all, and NOBODY knows what happened with Kid Kurrupt and Predator.
But the Dancehall Anthem album is the jewel in Greensleeves crown. 40 tracks strong over 2 discs, every year, always something new, always interesting, and this year is no different. One of the more interesting aspects of the 2006 edition is the presence of 3 artists. Burro Banton, Ninjaman and King Yellowman are not typically the type of artists you would find anywhere near this album. But all score decent: Burro with his Man Guinep over the Intercom Reloaded riddim, Ninjaman with his `y'all forgot me' style Back in Town, "Them think I gone away, but I'm back to claim it. Nuff a them a hype but them cant maintain it!", over the Foundation riddim from Vendetta and of course King Yellow with his massive Orphan shot on the 85.
Without a doubt the star of the project, however, is young singjay Mavado. His mega hit Real McCoy over the Anger Management riddim might just be the best that either of the 2 discs have to offer. Also check his nice combinations with Kartel and Busy Signal, Sunrise and Full Clip, respectively, also his Weh Dem a Do over the Red Bull & Guiness.
Highlights include from disc one: Definitely Ms Angellic Alaine! With her Whine over Vendetta's Sweat riddim; A nice nice combination between Lady Spice and Pinchers over Dave Kelly's Stage Show riddim; Sizzla's infamous Nah Rape over the Inspector riddim and a DJ whom I had long left for mediocrity, Mr Peppa with his LETHAL Talk over Ward's I-Rob 21. I'll even give Hollow Point an up for his Easy Skanking over the Chinkuzi.
Disc one is CONSIDERABLY better than disc 2.
Save for about 5-6 tracks (2-3 of which have more than made the rounds on the compilation circuit, especially Beenie's Come Again and Busy's Step Out) the second disc is very weak. Check tracks 9-10 for the main highlight. Beenie Man and Bounty Killa continue their decade+ long war with the outstanding Bullet Proof Vest from Beenie and not to be outdone Bounty's Bullet Proof Skin. Beenie scores the bigger shot as Bounty turns to recycled lyrics, but both are still well done over the hard hard (Bellyas-esque) Show Off riddim.
Also check Sizzla's nice Purple off the Battlefield riddim. And 2 extras from disc one, Bounty and Angel Doolas, also over the Battlefield on Not Me (a decade after Merciless used the same title for a Bounty counteraction) and Kartel on the infectious Beyonce Wine.
The bad? I don't like the soundmen/dancers making tunes. And they are in healthy abundance here. Between Matterhorn's 4 tracks (including the well well traveled Dutty Whine), Ding Dong's equally prolific Bad Man Forward, Bad Man Pull Up and the steadily annoying Soltex 3000, makes a nice corner of this album barely listenable. Also Supahype's HORRID take on Baby Cham's Ghetto Story on Uptown Story and Bunji's Brrrt which is actually good (provided you don't listen to it more than a couple of times).
Overall, through my rants, I don't know how I couldn't recommend this one. Between the 40 tracks, there is bound to be a steady stream of about 14-15 which you will like. That's an entire album worth of songs at no extra charge. This edition, perhaps more than any other has made sure to try and stay current with Jamaica, many of these songs are still weeks and weeks away from being off of the radio here. So you get up to date with some vibes, meet some new artists (including David House, Capleton protégé, Munga whom I didn't mention) and you're guaranteed to find something you like here if you like dancehall at all.

Trying to Run Before You Can Walk.......2001-04-06
The main reason for this unfulfilled potential is shown here on this disc. Shaggy is able to create very good singles, however his musical vision - such as it is - doesn't lend itself well to the album format. On "Boombastic", we begin with the Rayvon collaboration "Summertime" - this is quite a good partnership as songs of this nature go (although Chaka Demus And Pliers have perfected the art) but is slightly lighter weight than it should be.
The song which really sums up the album is "Boombastic". Here we have a great hit - worldwide number 1 etc - which should set the tone for the album. Certainly it is a standout but really only because the rest of the album doesn't fulfill the promise of the title cut.
Don't think that I'm saying that Shaggy is nothing when it comes to dancehall - quite the contrary. Three songs on this album ("Heartbreak Susie", "Finger Smith" and "Forgive Them Father") demonstrate a solid understanding of the attitudes and requirements of the proper toasting DJ.
Shaggy falls short here because his net is cast too broadly (a problem with many of the younger dancehall artists). He tries to integrate elements of hip-hop ("Why You Treat Me So Bad") and gospel ("Train Is Coming") among other styles on this album - reggae is not meant to do this.
By all means buy this album - it makes a great soundtrack for parties and the like. Just don't claim any great knowledge of reggae or dancehall having listened to it. For a more comprehensive dancehall education, try Chaka and Pliers, Buju Banton or Beenie Man.
In short, an artist with great potential who needs to work on keeping things simple before trying new things. From the potential he shows here - I hope he takes this on board because he could be very good.

The next track "Tek him back' is funny but true. I reall can't say anything about "white lie' that song speaks for itself.
All the songs on this album is hot from "i'm woman" to "this is love" to "sounds of tears".
Thanks Tanya for delivering another ever blazing album. Believe it or not i still blast 'tek 9" and 'part time lover"

Listen to the political content of "Sound of My Tears", "Warn Dem", "Do You Still Care", Keep Looking Up", and "The Other Cheek" and the emotional honesty of "Damn You", "Cant Breathe", "Spilt Milk" and "What a Day".
Now, as I am a nice girl from Upper St. Andrew, there were many times when my neck snapped back of its own volition directing my unbelieving eyes to the stereo as if they could contradict what my ears had registered in the... aah.... explicit lyrics of songs such as "Boom Wuk", "Good Ride" and "Don't Play". But after I recovered from the shock I almost fell over laughing. This girl is funny.
But that is not why I praise her work. My enthusiasm extends way beyond Tanya Stephens' competence as a songstress and the outstanding musical quality of the songs of Gangsta Blues and Rebelution. Its the power of her pen that impresses me. Tanya Stephens has an exceptional mind; she's an original thinker. She boldly challenges concepts that are so ingrained in our culture that they are accepted as unchallengable "givens". There is no holding on to Bob's coat tails here.
I do have serious reservations about her work. I take exception to the self destructive philosophy which informs woman against woman lyrics such as "Still a go lose him" and "To the Rescue". And as I have no tolerance for Gangsta culture, and no intention of cultivating any, I am not amused by the lyrics of "Gangsta Gal". "These Streets" are vicious and ugly; it does us no good to romanticize them.
I will say this though, even though I often disagree with her premise, Tanya's reasoning is always linear.

An 18-song, single-disc collection merely scratches the surface when it comes to the work of one of Jamaica's most prolific and popular artists. On the other hand, it's a perfect way to introduce yourself to reggae's jack-of-all-trades, a man who was equally comfortable with love songs, social commentary, and Rastafarian chants, deep dub and polished pop. Brown's music is characterized by his dulcet, easy-flowing vocals, roughed up with just a hint of a rasp. He may have lacked the visceral energy of a Toots Hibbert or the sting of a Peter Tosh, but that's exactly what defined the "Crown Prince of Reggae": he greatly favored peace, love, and understanding over anger, bitterness, and force. Though not arranged chronologically, this set offers stellar mid-1970s Observer singles--produced by Niney the Observer--such as the propulsive "Westbound Train" and the gently moving "Wolf & Leopards" (mixed by Lee "Scratch" Perry), which finds him at his most socially aware. Brown's Joe Gibbs-produced commercial peak of the late 1970s and early 1980s is well represented, highlighted by the bittersweet hit "Money in My Pocket," though the Sly & Robbie-produced cuts from the mid-1980s mark a bit of a decline. Still, the best moments here also represent some of the best moments in reggae, reminding us how much the late Dennis Brown will be missed. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
