Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Singer-songwriter Stephen Merritt's ironically morose lyrics, Tin Pan Alley stylings, sugary melodies, and idiosyncratic sound have earned his band the Magnetic Fields cult status and the adulation of grad students everywhere. The ambitious, genre-hopping, and intensely heart-tugging three-disc set 69 Love Songs probably won't gain Merritt the wider recognition he deserves, but the clever misanthrope likely wouldn't have it any other way. --Mike McGonigalAmazon.com
Initially conceived as 100 love songs arranged in alphabetical order for theatrical revue performance, Stephin Merritt--indie-pop songsmith and Magnetic Fields spearhead--downsized his ambitious concept project to 69 Love Songs, his first recording under this moniker in four years. Parleyed into three volumes, Merritt, as on other outings, is joined by a rotating cast of musicians including manager Claudia Gonson. These players take on the role of orchestra and cast to Merritt's madcap composer, librettist, and performer, augmenting his lo-fi electronic-based rock with sparkling instrumental touches and narrative vocals for a portion of his absurdly wondrous ditties. Endlessly intriguing, the Fields revisit not only earlier themes of love both shunned and requited, but continue to forge a seemingly impossible synthesis of country-tinged Euro-pop and old-school musical theater. No stranger to melancholy, Merritt's twinkly music-box world, in shades of resplendent violet, is beautifully peopled with incurable romantics who drop pop-culture references and shed gender identity as often as most folks change their underpants. Not surprisingly, 69 Love Songs is delicious defeat on the romance front while pulling ahead as Merritt's most coherently engaging listen. --Paige La GroneAlbum Description

Each disc comes in a separate standard jewel case & together they come in a colorful CD-sized slipcase box. 69 tracks.Customer Reviews:

Battle Cry of a Generation.......2006-09-15
It hasn't left my turntable in four years, for by the time I finish one of the three LPs, it's always time for the less familiar second one, and to gear up anticipation for the already forgotten third.
One thing I don't like is the booklet that comes with the box set. It marks a platinum standard in self-aggrandization. Remember the Rolling Stone Interviews that used to glorify even the most unlikely interview subject (say, Axl Rose or whoever). Imagine then if Axl Rose re-packaged the interview some flunky did with him, and tried to sell it to you with his LP, except a hugely expanded edition which tried to say that he was the best songwriter and in fact genius of all time. That gives you a taste of the booklet's effrontery. It's kind of not cool, but what do I know. I've seen it on the nightstands of a dozen young hipsters who have memorized all of the questions and all of the answers and whose mouths lipsync the whole 28,000 words in their sleep.
Ingenious.......2006-08-07
Stephen Merritt is the sort of lyricist -- like Leonard Cohen -- who is a poet first and musician second, though it would be possible to tag 20-some songs here that are wonderfully listenable as pure music.
The Magnetic Fields have captured every nuance of courtship and every facet of romantic absurdity as in, eg. "The Night You Couldn't Remember (is the Night I'll Never Forget."
On the other hand, are many songs that will bring tears to your eyes without warning because they are so tender and empathetic. Stephen Merrit is like an alternative, lo-fi therapist who, in 69 totally varied songs, appears to understand anyone -- male or female -- who has ever loved, or tried and failed.
It's also rare to find an album with a playlist so complex that you never tire of it. I've had my copy for over two years and still discover new material to love with each listing: a riff, an arrangement, a phrase, even a title.
In a country where people of all ages are more isolated, I can't think of another album that gives us the courage to connect with other people. These quirky songs honor our tenacious efforts to reach out -- and the rewards and consequences of trying.
While some listeners might be a bit disappointed in the fair dynamic range of the production, that quality is a choice the group made with intent. Love is ultimately rough around the edges, even when it is deep. It is occasionally a complete bore. It embraces routine even as it rebels against it. It is impossible to perfect because we can't change other people.
At it's core, that's what so many of these wonderful songs address and it is a balm to the ear, the mind and the heart that the Magnetic Fields invested so much in this terrific, well-loved album (now available in three separate releases as well as the boxed set.) For my money, Volume 1 is the best of the bunch musically, while the lyrics of Volume three are laugh-out-loud hysterical.
Warts and all -- five strong stars, and a great deal at this price.

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

Interview with Renee Fleming
Renee Fleming speaks about recent projects, including her memoir The Inner Voice and her recent Handel CD, in our interview.
Customer Reviews:
Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13
The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.
So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).
Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww.......2007-06-06
Better than I thought it would be.......2007-04-10
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction. He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.
I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.
To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!
Brava Renee.......2007-04-09
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.
Art is always new. .......2007-03-10
I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

"NANA CHANGES EVERYTHING".......2003-05-29
The title of the album, "The Very Best Of Nana Mouskouri- Only Love" is not inappropriate nor misguiding. However with the extraordinary number of tracks and performances Ms Mouskouri has recorded as a treasure of her musical talent, it is by no means an exhaustive anthology of "her best". So much of what she sings is "her best"!
"Why Worry" certainly ranks high-up on my list of favorite tracks on this collection. There is no comparison to the excellent delivery she brings to "Even Now"!
"Every Time We Say Goodbye" leaves you never wanting to say goodbye to Nana nor to listening to her "melancholy" musical evocation of how love just tugs and pulls and even tears at our hearts. To hear her vocal accompanied by a true Greek Bouzouki makes the Abba song "I Have A Dream" sound exactly the way you had always imagined and "heard" it to be in your mind. It's a truly "magical" sound.
The title of the first track on this album, "Love Changed Everything" gives us a good description of the musical experience that listening to Nana Mouskouri provides: Nana changes everything . . . and for the better!

Amazon.com essential recording
The greatest expression of Burt Bacharach's composing and arranging talents is the marvelous string of productions he made with Dionne Warwick and lyricist Hal David for a decade or so starting in 1962. Many of their triumphs are included in this three-CD box (also see the single disc The Dionne Warwick Collection), along with dozens of other tracks made between 1957 (Marty Robbins's "Story of My Life") and 1996 (Bacharach's collaboration with Elvis Costello on "God Give Me Strength"). The master's blend of froth, deep emotion, and challenging musicality provides many masterpieces and a few unfortunate moments: he doesn't have much to show for the '80s aside from "That's What Friends Are For" and "Arthur's Theme." Its handful of missteps aside, though, The Look of Love is an essential trove of great pop things. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Wingtips, Telstar, Rotary, 1964 Worlds Fair..........2007-04-05
In short, Burt Bacharach represents pop culture of the 1960's. At it's apogee. Like a moon shot Bacharach's gorgeous melodies and Hal David's brilliant lyrics spanning the decade from the Blob to Movie of The Week. From Bobby Vinton to the Age of Aquarius. Sock Hop to Woodstock.
Essential: Frankie Valli, Beach Boys, Beatles, Stones, Airplane, Sinatra... Bacharach.
Great music of... and beyond... it's era. Timeless... as long as Anyone Has A Heart and The World Needs Love.
This is MUSIC. Not hip hop. Orchestral, composed, inspired.
