An apt title indeed. Unlike other compilations from the Rough Guide series that focus on a specific country or genre, this indispensable anthology for lovers of vintage dance music incorporates treasures from a variety of styles. The unifying element here is the time frame--the fertile decades between the late '50s and the early '80s--when West African pop came of age by creating a mesmerizing stew of spiraling electric guitars, echoes of Afro-Cuban big band and lyrics brimming with nationalistic pride (the dark era of European colonialism was finally over.) Much of the material here can be classified under the honeyed styled known as highlife, including a stunning opening track with a rich calypso flavor by Ghana's venerable E.T. Mensah. There's also the James Brown-like funk of Sierra Leone's Geraldo Pino and the Heartbeats, as well as lengthy workouts by two of Africa's most celebrated orchestras--Senegal's Orchestra Baobab and Guinea's Bembeya Jazz. Popular music doesn't get any more soulful than this. --Ernesto Lechner

Album Description

The Rough Guide To West African Gold features music produced in sub-Saharan West Africa from the late 1950s up to the early 1980s - a golden era in African music. Highlife guitars and horns from Ghana and Nigeria, Guinean big band music from the state run Syliphone label, early Senegalese mbalax with its tasty Latin influences and the funky Afrobeat sound that shakes the hippest dancefloors across the globe, this is the big beat of West Africa!

This Rough Guide explores the jazz scene of one of the world's greatest musical powerhouses. From the progressive 1960s, when many of South Africa's finest musicians were forced into exile by the constraints of apartheid, to the modern era and the sound of the new 'rainbow nation', it also takes in the great jazz era of the 1950s.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely enthralling!.......2006-06-03

I seldom write reviews for Amazon because I don't have a lot of time, but this CD is one of the best I've heard in the past several years. I've enjoyed every single track--for me it's definitely the best of the 30 Rough Guide collections I've heard to date. Fifteen years ago, listening to a program about "African music" on NPR I started chasing what I'd heard -- and now I know it was South African. Reminds me a bit of modern Brazilian jazz. My ears are reveling in all these sounds and beats. I want more!

3 out of 5 stars file under 'easy listening'.......2003-09-09

i made the mistake of thinking that this would be african music, but every time i play i swear it i swear it's just another jazz festival gathering. i am absolutely certain that there are more South African jazz musicians with character than are represented here. i would say if you like jazz, then sure, but if you're looking for good African music, check out the rough guides to Senegal & Gambia, Cape Verde (sweet!! bluesy and jazzy), or Music of Africa.

5 out of 5 stars More Good stuff from S/A.......2003-05-02

Strictly speaking, this Cd isn't just S/A jazz but what is commonly known as "Township Jive, " the Jazz and R&B flavored music of South Africa's ghettoes. But whatever you call it, it's VERY good stuff and this Cd will please both initiates and longtime fans of the genre with its melodic and rhythmic selections. The selection with Miriam Makeba and her early group the Skylarks is particularly appealing. If you have this already, it's a good way to turn your friends to this wonderful genre of music. Show them what Paul Simon was talking about.

5 out of 5 stars As close to indespensible as a CD can be.......2002-08-20

From first to last track, this CD is an outstanding collection of music which is either unavailable elsewhere, or very, very difficult to find (at least in Chicago). Every song on this collection is pure joy: South African pop sensibilities flavoring rich jazz. A tape of this CD is one of my steadfast driving partners, remaining in my car as other titles shuffle in and out. My only complaint is that there isn't more: I want another disk!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent selections!.......2001-07-25

This CD is a must for anyone into Jazz music, from Contemporary Jazz to Classical, this album is one of a kind. With the various bands and sounds, you can get a good feel for what it might be like being in South Africa at a club enjoying a nice meal. With 16 songs on the album and a total of 73 minutes of playing time, you are bound to enjoy loads of fun and relaxation!

This is the perfect introduction to West African music. Some of the songs are absolutely captivating (Oumou Sangare and Ali Farka Toure especially). Brilliantly sourced album.

4 out of 5 stars Nice intro to W. African music.......2002-03-20

This CD was my first exposure to West African music. Surprise! They aren't limited to bongo drums and acapella chants! I've fallen in love with several of the songs on this CD, and so have my children. We are now tracking down and collecting the CD's of the artists we enjoyed most! Great variety.
