With Enter the Earth, what Burning Sky do best is to bring together elements of both traditional native instruments and sound with contemporary folk, forming a hybrid that is always interesting, often good, and at times sublime. The core quartet is formed by Michael Bannister on drums, Kelvin Bizahaloni on flute, Aaron White on flute and acoustic guitars, and John Katz on guitars as well. The music is emboldened by use of rattles, bodrhan, didgeridoo, mandolin, and various percussive instruments. The record's finest moments are those in which the band locks onto the difficult balance of restraint and abandon, as on the rousing sacred revelry of "Circle Dance." In this piece Darryl Iccard's guest appearance on bass guitar provides a firm foothold for the hypnotic ringing repetition of interlocking guitar lines, gliding flute, and drums accented by bells. "Celebration Song" is an uplifting booty shaker, and the exceptional "Tribal Stomp" is a funky fingerpicked Indian blues. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars best of native world beat music.......2000-02-21

incredible album of sounds from one of america's best original bands. a real variety of natural music with a native american/world beat style. like no one else i've heard!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully varied cuts but classic and classy Burning Sky!.......1999-09-26

I have all the Burning Sky CDs and while I enjoy all of them, this is by far their best work. The music is sometimes almost "Southern Scratch", then the next cut has a decided Gaelic feel, Warrior's Dance is just that -- a real smorgasbord, every one a winner -- go buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Native Americans Can Carry The Beat (of course).......2004-04-20

If you walked into the hippest non-mainstream club, this would be playing.

5 out of 5 stars This is a whole new animal - Great Sounds.......2002-03-13

This album is EXCELLENT. It's is a step into a new genera of music. It's so refreshing to hear a new combination of sounds. The soothing tones of R. Carlos Nakai's flute combined with Sarde's electronic textures give a really mesmerizing sonic blend. Definitely check this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, beautiful fusion of modern and traditional.......2002-03-13

This album is amazing! It is a beautiful blend of traditional Native American flute and voice with electronic beats and textures. Fans of R. Carlos Nakai will not be dissapointed as his haunting flute and chanting is featured prominently. On "Winter Camp" Mr. Nakai's flute masterfully communicates the introspection of winter and the longing for spring. On "Plains Wind" he mimics the soaring winds and his gorgous flute playing gives way to the almost-whispered singing of Robert Tree Cody.
The electronic arrangments (skillfully and sensitively done by Cliff Sarde)bring a modern edge to the traditional singing of Robert Tree Cody, Jay Begaye, Delphine Tsinajinnie, William Horncloud and Primeaux and Mike but never trample the raw and natural beauty of their performances. The song "Retire the Colors" has the well-known pow-wow group Blackstone Singers signing a flag song against the strong pulse of a drum beat surrounded in rich textures and a dub-like bass-line. On "Lakota Love Song", Sarde creates a stirring arrangement for a 50-year old recording by legendary Lakota singer William Horncloud. Sarde's arrangements pull elements from the worlds of electronica and New Age but are always reverant and stay true to the spirit of the traditional flute and singing they accompany.
Fans of Deep Forest and Enigma will also be satisfied with this one but Enter-Tribal is unique as it does the difficult job of skillfully matching the world of electronic music with the traditional world of Native American flute and voice. A must-own album!!!
