Whether they are singing hymns or secular songs, Ladysmith Black Mambazo always raise their voices in glorious harmony. They are the unmatched masters of the South African a cappella form known as isicathamiya or mbube, and this CD demonstrates their vocal prowess. The Zulu songs are ornamented by trills, yips, humming, and tra-la-las and punctuated by the rhythmic clicks that are particular to the language. The English-language songs instruct and advise on the fine moral points of human relationships. While the mbube song form lends a certain similarity to the pieces, this group is so good that the music never seems redundant, and the generous selection of 16 songs seems to go by too quickly. --Jeff Grubb

The Best of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.......2007-06-27
This CD brings an uplifting spirit to the listener. My husband enjoys the crisp sound of voices in unison and harmony. We found this music quite enjoyable. You can feel the spirituality of the musicians as they bring you each note.
What Mambazo means.......2007-04-19
Mambazo means "Ox" in Zulu--NOT axe. This explains one of the first reviewers who mistakenly wondered why the group would have such a violent tone to their group name.
Oh, and I really enjoy this group!
not as good as expected.......2007-03-19
This wasn't as good as I had hoped. Not enough upbeat selections.
Interesting but..................2007-03-03
This is very interesting music.
Sound quality is very good.
What i didn't like is that most of the tracks are very simillar - if you would skip between tracks you wouldn't notice that the track was changed.
Beautiful music.......2006-06-27
This group makes music beautiful, peaceful and soulful. So calming and precious.

In 1968, a little-known South African-born trumpeter and flugelhornist named Hugh Masakela released an instrumental single called "Grazing in the Grass." Its catchy, percussive rhythms and jazzy horn lines made it an international hit, and turned Masakela into an overnight star. This compilation contains 14 of Masakela's most celebrated tracks recorded from the '60s to the '90s. These "greatest hits" show how Masakela ingeniously blends a fiery, post-bop trumpet style with African-American R&B and African rhythms, and long before the term "world music" came into vogue. Included on this collection is the Cuban cha-cha laced "Vasco Da Gama," the melancholy Miriam Makeba classic, "Strawberries," and the anti-apartheid anthem, "Bring Him Back Home (Nelson Mandela)." Hugh Masakela has been, and will continue to be, an importance force in the world of music. --Eugene Holley Jr.

i heard one of hugh masekela's songs on a cab one day and i almost immediately feel in love with it i jumped on amazon and found several of his works and since then this cd has been in my car from the time i bought it up until now, my favorite is the marketplace ....wonderful cd get it express ship it "smile"
FANTASTIC.......2005-09-07
What a cool sensation this record is! Just let it wash over you like a warm summer breeze. The sophisticated, jazzy horn and outrageously melodic pieces on this CD are just wonderful - most notably Grazing In The Grass, with its infectious joy and Strawberries, with its interesting melody and wonderful, melancholy vocals. A must for everyone.
Maybe give it 2 1/2 or 3....of course.......2005-01-11
I don't know 'bout this one 'cuz it maybe the one I'm livin' 4 right there. Not to say I hate it, but it's still good tho. It needs a lot of energy of the songs that Hugh is playing. Love the sound that he's doing on his flugelhorn. He's is definitely the next Miles Davis or Donald Byrd perhaps. Maybe even Chuck Mangione for example. He's actually a mentor I can depend on. Sooner or later, I maybe a mentor like him. 2 me I'm real good on playing the trumpet 'cuz that's a gift from God. Hope u recommend this to anybody who loves to hear good trumpet music.
a decent start on is Music,but.......2005-01-09
there are better overall Compilations on Hugh Masekela. now the title cut grooves&He has a signature Trumpet style of his own.there is alot more to His Talents&other stylings of Creativity that He has done over time.this is a decent Start, but you have to seek it out.
The Best of What !!! No way, or Maybe so.......2004-05-05
This cd is titled "Grazing in the grass: The best of Hugh Maskela. okay, now I would like to know why the other to songs that were release right after grazing in the grass are not on the cd? "Riot" came out on 45rpm right afterwards and the next song that was played on 45rpm was "Puffin on down the track" Where are these songs? Why aren't they on this cd? I will admit "Grazing in the grass" is Hugh Masekela's most successful commercial success, most of his work isn't commercial, and if you're not a fan you probably haven't heard any of his other music. Anytime you title something "Greatest", or the best of,
well..... at least include all of those songs or most of them on the cd. Maybe this is the recording co. or a representative from the company's personal best of. I'll give this cd 4 stars, only because Grazing in the grass is on it, and that song is one of the best instumentals tunes that has been recorded.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
There is nothing subtle in the roiling Afro-funk of the late, great Fela Kuti. His twitchy, stomping rhythms are up in your face, his brass section sounds ready to skirmish with the JB Horns, and his confrontational, politically charged lyrics make modern punk or hip-hop sound like parlor chatter. This phenomenal collection from an artist easily the equal of Marley, Hendrix, or Dylan is nothing less than essential. --S. Duda
Amazon.com
Political activist, outspoken radical, and inventor of Afro-beat, Fela Anikulapo ("he who carries death in his pouch") Kuti left behind him an incomparable legacy of music when he died in 1997. His struggles against the Nigerian state became the stuff of legend in his home country; his denunciations of world leaders such as Reagan and Thatcher gained him notoriety abroad. But his music remains as his supreme achievement over and above the details of his amazingly courageous life, even if many (most) of his lyrics are angry condemnations of politicians. His vast output of recordings can hardly be distilled onto two discs, but Black President (named after a classic 1981 album) is nevertheless a good introduction to this extraordinary man and his music. The album lacks any personnel details and fails to indicate the origins of each track, but it scarcely matters: Fela's band, Africa 70, was a large and always flexible group (it rarely actually boasted 70 members), with the only constant presence being his 30 backing singers, most of whom were also his wives! Throughout, the beats are solid, the solos are never overpowering, and the rhythm--the powerful, hypnotic rhythm--is always preeminent. If, in the end, it's impossible to divorce Fela Kuti's music from his life, it is at least a real pleasure just to play this album and let his grooves possess your spirit. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Fela - The King.......2006-01-27
Wow. Fela Kuti. It's amazing that he hasn't become better known; his music is incredible. He blends orchestra, rock, jazz, and Yoruba music effortlessly. Fela Kuti is one of Nigeria's premier musicians and he has paved to road for Afro-pop music.
Songs like Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense and Unknown Soldier really show his political passion and message. If you're into political stuff, get this artist because he is very clear and outspoken about his political views. Fela was (mentally) very involved with Nigerian politics and sung of the corruption and lack of leadership that plague the nation's government even today.
Just as in Nigerian literature, Fela Kuti also sings of the nation's dislike of British colonialism, and the philosophy of the "white man's burden," which is the thought that other races are inferior to whites and that, through colonization and interaction, the whites can "educate" and culture the blacks.
If you aren't into that stuff, you should still get Fela, because he's that good. Now bear in mind, his music gets a little repetitive and "jam band-ish," so don't be surprised if you hear the same riff throughout a song. Songs like "Beasts of No Nation," and "Jingo" are very good and the orchestra's sound plays a large role in this. The accompaniment of horns and trombones and trumpets produces an infectious melody and makes you want to stand up and dance.
It's also very easy to see the roots of Fela's music. The African beat and pulse is what makes his music unique. As said earlier, he blends traditional African music with rock and jazz, concocting a mixture so delightful you will beg for more. His music is upbeat, but calming. It is calm, but urgent. It is arbitrary, but is carefully crafted. If a picture is a thousand words, then Fela Kuti is 9 billion. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not deifying him, because he also has some songs that don't shine so brightly and other songs get repetitive. However, ninety percent of the time, Kuti produces gold.
If you like Fela Kuti you should also check out Fema Kuti, his son. Unlike most movie sequels, this successor does his father, the precedent, justice and is almost as good. Ultimately though, Fela Kuti is the real deal.
Intense and Truly the Best.......2006-01-23
Bought this in 2005. Roforofo Fight has to be one of the most intense and tight songs ever recorded. It just doesn't let up! It's like Nigerian King Crimson with Eric Dolphy on alto sax! I like it like that. In some ways, I don't think American people are equipped to handle music like Fela's. We want it melodic and relaxed -- like smooth jazz -- or nonmelodic and intense -- like metal or rap. Fela is melodic and intense. I like Fear and John Coltrane and Blind Lemon Jefferson and Earl Hooker and Black Sabbath and System of a Down and Stevie Wonder and James Brown and Metallica and Ron Carter maybe that's why I like Fela Kuti. The man was a human blast furnace. He could not be tamed. And my girlfriend likes it. So that helps. Fela, in my opinion, was the man who put it all together in the 1970s. Who says 1970s music was bad? Like James Brown, Miles Davis and Led Zeppelin, Fela put out his most out-there, kicking, mindroasting music in 1975. Long live the 25 minute song !!!
Just A Taste, But It's Sweet Going Down!.......2005-08-27
Overshadowed by Bob Marley, Fela Kuti is the true non-American Black Musical innovator. Not to take anything away from Tuff Gong's claim to fame, but Fela is a Black Panther/Eldridge Cleaver mixed with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix.
This selection of his music is a good intro (much like the RED HOT & RIOT CD, which contains intreptations of Fela's Afrobeat by the likes of Macy Gray, Maxwell and Sade), but you really need to get the original albums just to see how he was rolling with his album cover art (talk about political art!), the way he dressed and carried on -- like nothing you've ever really seen.
Oh, get the DVD on Fela MUSIC IS A WEAPON to see the man perform live and drop his knowledge and what's up with Nigeria, the West and the world at large!
I recommend Coffin For Head Of State, Zombie, Expensive Sh^t and Original Sufferhead, but others might tell you diffent. To be truthful, you can't really go wrong with a Fela purchase.
does music get any better?.......2005-03-15
of course songs like "lady" and "gentleman" are problematic, but the music is so infectious that you can't help but love fela kuti. okay, so he married however many women at once and immediately divorced them. okay, so he thought aids wasn't real. okay, okay. the man was a brilliant musician and if you don't move your body to the music when this double cd (especially the first one) is playing, something's wrong with you. recommended for people who love to dance.
This was a BAAAAAAD Man!!.......2004-10-02
I have been listening to Mr Kuti's music for years. If anyone has any doubts whatsoever about world music, this is a great place to start!! From slower tempos to faster beats, no matter what track it is, I am jamming, jamming, jamming!! What I also like about his music is that there are messages to be learned. Even though I am in the USA, when I listen to some of his lyrics it's like I am traveled to the plight in his day and time. I know that he wrote most ofthe songs 30+ years ago on a totally different continent, I can identify with many of the lyrics today.
All I have left to say is that I have (unintentionally) converted several friends and family members who got hooked from me listening to it. I used my others disks so much that they became scratched beyond recognition. I was NOT satisfied until I went and bought another dual set. Don't sleep.

DISAPPOINTING.......2006-07-05
I was expecting to hear some of the old songs with the same arrangements and backup bands. I was surprised to find not one single piece the same as I remembered. If you have no comparison, you would probably enjoy this gifted songstress. I found the quality overall to be disappointing.
You Can't Beat Mama? Join Her!.......2004-10-22
Mama Africa! What a proper name for the Queen of African Song. This collection has all the great songs from Miriam. It plays choronoligically from her earliest recording up to her most recent records. The melodies are infectious and Miriam makes you want to know more about the plight of the people of Africa she describes in her songs. This is a must-have for lovers of South African music.
Good choice for new audience.......2004-03-17
As the previous review says, this is a good collection. However, as I was trying to replace songs from two albums which apparently haven't been released on CD (1960's "Miriam Makeba" RCA album and the early '60's Kapp Records album "The Many Voices of Miriam Makeba"), this CD wasn't what I was looking for. Most of the songs sound nothing like the arrangements I loved on those albums. They would be great for a new audience, but for those who are looking to replace those early '60's records, don't expect this to be the same. If your intention isn't to replace 40-year-old albums, though, I would definitely recommend this CD.
Very nice.......2002-11-23
Buy this just for tracks 1,4,15 and so on. To hear the early version of this voice is a pleasure in it self. But to hear the growth and development of an artist of this caliber is a rare treat indeed. Oh go ahead you know you want it.

Yucko........2005-01-01
If you enjoy this sort of florid, over-ripe, overproduced pop, then I suppose this is a very generous collection, what with the rarities and live tracks and all. It's not for me, though. I do not like it, Sam I Am. There are other Youssou N'Dour albums I'd recommend first.
AWSOME!.......2004-05-30
I found out about Yousou N'Dour while doing a report on the country "senegal"(where he was born). I wrote about him for famous people and he sounded cool so i got his cd. I was BLOWN AWAY. Even though i cant understand the words, the beats are awsome and they will get you up dancing!!! THIS IS A MUST IN THE COLLECTION!
Great voice, music to enjoy time and again.......2004-04-27
Basically I am a Western pop fan , having listened to mainly chart tunes and commercially released albums sung in English, by Australian, British, North American and European artists and amassed a very big collection of such recordings. I bought this album then as a departure from my usual field of knowledge and was richly rewarded with some very good music. I do not have the words to describe Youssou N'Dour's style accurately, as I know little about Senegalese music, yet anyone with ears can hear how terrific a singer he is. In 1994, I loved his magical duet 7 Seconds (performed with Neneh Cherry), and I rate it as one of the best songs of the 90's. That is the most familiar cut here, but most listeners will recognise the old Peter Tosh song Don't Look Back (done in a smooth soulful style), and of course the bouncy Beatles song Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, which Mr. N'Dour has some fun with. I liked the Fulani chant Yo Le Le best - this has a groovy beat . A bonus feature here for Western music fans unfamiliar with the Wolof language is a translation included for most song lyrics in the CD's booklet. This is a very welcome feature of this set, and adds to one's understanding and enjoyment of these songs. As a result of my enjoyment of this album, I intend to listen to more music in this style.
Fantastic combo of traditional Senegalese mbalax and pop.......2004-03-24
Having seen Youssou perform live - brilliantly - very recently, I was compelled to own a piece of his discography. This album is perfect for the new Youssou fan, and serves as a great introduction to the broad range of his work. From the pop-influenced work with Peter Gabriel to the divine soul of the memorable '7 Seconds' with Neneh Cherry, the album traverses the traditional Senegalese sound with Western influences. The most joyful and moving songs will have you jumping.'New Africa' pays homage to his home continent, and the live recordings of 'Set' and 'Oh Boy' bring the exuberance to the fore. The amusing bonus of 'Ob-La-Di' will leave you with a smile. An excellent album for those who like his poppier side, with less emphasis on his mbalax and Super Etoile de Dakar background.

Everybody please come the real world of Africa.......2000-09-18
For all the many albums available by these household names from Africa, what you get here, unlike the more polished studio albums, is the real african exotic voices. This one should repeat their success in african music. This album brings to your home the dangers, exhaustions, and exhilarations better than any journalism. I have first heard their voice in the greatest Paul Simon-penned "Homeless." since then, they are my greatest group in african music.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo, South Africa's instantly recognizable vocal group, follow up their immensely popular Best Of collection with a set of songs from throughout their 40-album, 25-year career. With a voice that teases and tickles one moment then rises in inspiration the next, Joseph Shabalala leads Ladysmith Black Mambazo, their voices joining in immaculate a cappella harmony as they sing glorious gospel tunes in their native languages of Zulu and Xhosa. They also revisit one of the songs that launched them into international fame on Paul Simon's Graceland album. "Homeless" is performed without Simon's help here and they've made it all their own. This is a fine collection of material from the group and features many songs never before released in the U.S. --Jeff Grubb
Customer Reviews:
Mambazo and God.......2006-11-27
I really wish there were a site with English translations for those who do not understand isiZulu. Ladysmith Black Mambazo's music puts your soul very close to God with their hymns and praise songs. A to Z, their music is soothing, reassuring and re-affirming. You'd do well to own this piece of Heaven.
Voices of Gold.......2002-11-22
I have had the pleasure of both owning 2 of their records and having heard them in concert. The harmony and beauty of the voices is food for the soul. As good as any choir or small group I have ever heard. This album and the Warner Bros Collection are my favorites.
Excellent and powerful music.......1999-06-05
Fans of world music, traditional hymns, minimalism, and linguistics will love this album. The best track is mislabeled however--the song printed as "Vuka Jona Sithandaze" is in fact called "Uphi Umhlobo" and was released as track 3 on the 1st Best-of album. I can only guess it appears here in error. No matter, since you'll want to play this track 400 times.
Rich, complex melodies woven with great expertise........1999-01-18
Ladysmith Black Mambazo is an extremely talented group of vocalists whose intricate, uplifting harmonies seem to be excecuted with great ease. The fluidity and rich depth of each member's voice comlement the overall beauty and peace which each piece conveys. I can't say enough about this CD!
