A return to their former glory days, Snakes and Arrows shows this seminal prog rock band reclaiming some of the sonic territory that they'd lost over the past few years. Well, it's been several months since Snake & Arrows came out, and I've had plenty of time to give it it's fair consideration. Rush has never been a band whose music was immediately accessible to most people, they put a lot into their music and it takes a lot to get the "Big Picture" from it. There hasn't been a Rush album since Test For Echo or Moving Pictures that immediately grabbed me and struck me as being absolutely awesome and rockin.

With that said, after much time and listening, I'm finding Snakes & Arrows to be one of the most beautiful and meaningful albums Rush has released in a very long time (well, it's been quite a long time since their last album too :)

There's a lot in this album that seems to describe the exact circumstances I've been finding myself in, in the last few years (sadly.) But as usual, I also found a good bit of inspiration to keep going through life, despite it's unfairness, meanness, misfortunes..

How unfortunate I was not able to see them in concert this time around. The thought that Rush won't be around much longer is very sad to me, but inescapable considering their age. But, I do hope they will be around for many decades to come, producing new music for us to reflect on and enjoy :)

Master Musicians.......2007-07-19

A wicked comeback for Rush in the '00s. They are officially back with a tight performance. Excellent guitar sounds and layering are found throughout 'Snakes and Arrows' with often hypnotic vocal melodies.

You don't have to know anything about music to recognize the Xanadu chord on track 1. With the next 3 songs, I get a strange but intriguing hook vibe found only on early 80's album 'Signals'. Also note there is a brilliant acoustic guitar short piece "Hope".

A lacking blues jam intro and oblique chorus hooks grouped later on 'Snakes and Arrows' doesn't represent old rush or new. This is one of many reasons why I would not rank this in the top 5 best Rush ever.

But to end on a positive note, I'm am totally surprised these guys still have their hearing and abilities with nearly 20 studio albums and decades of touring. They have not lost their chops one bit!

. . . but now I LOVE Rush. This album, hands down, is their **BEST** album ever!! I listen to it over and over and over again, and I'm one of those "Hemispheres" and "Moving Pictures" fans. This blows away everything they've ever done, and that's quite a resume' they have!

How is that a band that's been around for this long can surpass everything they've created hitherto after all this time? I don't know, but I am so in love with this album. It's all I can listen to!

Rush is so good and has been doing it for so long that it is hard to top their past masterpieces. And let's be honest, if you're getting old you have a fondness for what you grew up with.

That said, it seems like many reviewers have given this album 4 stars because they don't think it matches up to their favorite Rush albums. I agree in that context, but when putting this album up against all music, 5 stars all the way.

An instant classic.......2007-07-17

Rush is my favorite band so it maybe hard to write an honest review since I like pretty much everything this wonderful band has put out.

I will admit when I first heard this album I wasn't really impressed because there really wasn't any hooks on this album but after multiple listens to each song individually I really started to like this album. Neil Peart's lyrics on this album are phenomonal. He really has matured as a lyricisr and a drummer. Alex Lifeson really stands out on this album. Listen to the song "Hope" and you'll know what i'm talking about. Geddy Lee the bassist, Vocalist & keyboard player really breaths life into Neils lyrics.

The theme on this album is faith & spirituality. Just listen to the songs "Armor & Sword & The Larger Bowl" and you'll know what i'm talking about.

Rush themselves have said this was one of their favorite albums that they have ever made. On their current tour they perform nine songs out of the thirteen from Snakes & Arrows It is one of their most selling albums and charted high on billboard since the release of Counterparts which was released originally in 1993.

So go out and buy this albuma and if you have the time go see them on their current world tour. You won't be dissapointed.

THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT BLACK CROWES ALBUM........2007-03-13

I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM" by one of Rock's greatest bands. I give you one of Georgia's pride and joy's, T-H-E B-L-A-C-K C-R-O-W-E-S. This legendary album was originally released in 1996 on Compact Disc on the American Recordings Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE BLACK CROWES have now been entertaining us since 1990 with their smash albums such as the debut album "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER," the follow-up album "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION" from 1992 and "AMORICA" from 1994. In reality, all was well in THE BLACK CROWES world, living life to its fullest excesses and having a real good time. This time period was also another good time for THE BLACK CROWES or should I say, Chris Robinson, Rich Robinson, Steve Gorman, Johnny Colt, Marc Ford and Eddie Harsh to head back into the recording studio and record the follow-up album to the the extremely successful "AMORICA" album. After a certain period of time went by, THE BLACK CROWES would emerge from the recording studio with a completed album and hand it in to their American Recordings label. The album would be released and called "THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM." This album is really good and does show some life and similarity to their other previous albums. However, "THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM" is a little different from the other three albums in a sense that there is a lot more music contained on this album that is a little slower than usual. Despite that, the album still Rocks in more ways than one. In my opinion, "THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM" is another fine testament of the musical creativity of two extremely talented brothers and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that is working their way into legendary status.

Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This album begins with the incredible Southern Rocker "Under A Mountain," the slow and amazing "Good Friday," the killer Rocker "Nebakanezer," the merciless Rocker "One Mirror Too many," the breathtaking Rocker "Blackberry," the slow beautiful Country Rocker "Girl From A Pawnshop," the groundbreaking Rocker "(Only) Halfway To Everywhere," the slow beautiful acoustic Rocker "Bring On, Bring On," the beautiful acoustic number "How Much For Your Wings?," the fast paced Rocker "Let Me Share The Ride," another great Southern Rocker "Better When You're Not Alone" and the slow Rocker "Evil Eye." May I add the Chris Robinson's blistering lead vocals kick a*s the way a true frontman's singing is suppose to. Also both Rich's and Marc's guitar licks and riffs are played perfectly down to the bone.

Overall, this is a great album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a devout or diehard BLACK CROWES collector. However, I recommend that all newcomers or new beginners to the sound and music of THE BLACK CROWES to buy their first three albums before proceeding in listening to this album.

I would like to highly recommend in purchasing this album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished by everyone for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great BLACK CROWES album that all devout BLACK CROWES collector's and diehard's would not want to be without.

In closing, THE BLACK CROWES are still burning hot on fire and still playing to sold out concerts the world over. THE BLACK CROWES would still record more great albums and record with one of their greatest idol's ever. Believe it or not, their best is still yet to come. With that in mind, there would be new stories in the BLACK CROWES legend that would still need to be conquered, told and written in new pages and chapter's. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further about at a later date. So here's to you Chris, Rich, Steve, Johnny, Marc and Eddie. Thanks for the memories and still more to come. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong. Rock 'N' Roll with Alot of Soul!!!.......2005-07-20

Another Great Black Crowes CD!!! This disk is filled with great tracks! "Good Friday, One Mirror Too Many, Blackberry, (Only) Halfway To Everywhere, Bring On Bring On, How Much For Your Wings?, Let Me Share The Ride, Better When You're Not Alone" and the list goes on... Every Track has Soul and filled with Rock 'N' Roll. What other band can do this??? You will not be disappointed with this CD. It is just AWESOME!!!

Not for most listeners.......2005-06-08

I see more copies of this Crowes album in the used CD stores than any other.

The hard core Crowes' cadre may love this album, but most people won't find this one reachable. I'll agree with the other reviewers that the album seems more subdued. If you like the hard rocking sound of the Crowes on the radio, one of the other releases will probably be a better starting place.

Add a half when it grows on you........2005-06-03

Still with their ultimate lineup (C. Robinson, R. Robinson, Marc Ford, Steve Gorman, Eddie Harsch and Johnny Colt) intact after making two masterpieces, the Black Crowes made Three Snakes. As such, the playing on the album is top notch again. The feel of the album is a little less aggressive than Amorica, but there are plenty of rockin tunes.

This seems to be the "grower" in the Crowes catalog, where it takes a while for songs to assert themselves. While that's often a more rewarding thing than the opposite (an album that feels immediately familiar, but lacks longevity), the songs do suffer slightly from a lack of strong hooks and come off a little dry at times. The ballads, such as the pretty Girl From a Pawnshop and odd How Much For Your Wings? break away from the pack easiest and all the songs become rewarding in time. This was the third and last album from the band with this lineup, and during that time noone else in rock and roll was better.

Crucial Crowes Listening.......2005-03-31

OK, so you call yourself a Crowes fan because you like "Remedy" and "Hard To Handle"? Well, dig a little deeper and start with this disc. It's got some absolutely crucial Crowes songs that are standouts in their catalog or in concert. I hate to bash other's reviews but this disc is not overly noisy, it's just a little different- in fact, it's somewhat quiet in many parts. Chris' vocals are top-notch here, and never rambling or over-bearing as he can sometimes be. Overall it's got a vibe of "understanding" to it... something they desperately tried NOT to have with the free-wheeling, bad-assness of "Amorica". Understanding is NOT a bad thing here at all folks, so enjoy the whole disc as one, as it is THE most over-looked in their catalog.

1) Under A Mountain- 10/10 Typical great lead-off song about coming to grips with love and/or sex. Smooth guitars layer a slow steady vibe. Drums rock out nicely behind it all.

2) Good Friday- 10/10 One of my fav Crowes songs of all time. Heard them play this song LIVE on the actual Good Friday in an old church, so maybe I'm partial, but this might be the coolest break-up song ever. But not a wussy break-up point of view either, which is cool.

3) Nebakenezer- 10/10 Cool riff. Great drums. Vox are money. It's LOUD! And it's a bout drugs. What more could you ask for?

4) One Mirror Too Many- 8.5/10 Another drug warning. Looks like the boys are learning from their days of growing beards and dropping out on drugs (not that that was ever too bad for them musically)

5) Blackberry- 8/10 Easy to dismiss this one since it was the single, but a cool song. Funky. Chris' raspy vocals call back to the days of "Sometimes Salvation"

6) Girl From A Pawnshop- 9.5/10 Can almost picture him in a country bar singing this one. Cool story about a girl and a letter and the reality surrounding her while reading it. Ending is stellar.

7) (Only)Halfway To Everywhere- 8/10 Funky. Weird vocal effects. Upbeat. Could have easily ended up on Amorica. Got some horns from the Dirty Dozen helping out.

8) Bring On, Bring On- 8/10 Acoutic heavy. Gospel type chorus. OK on it's own... but sets up the next song rather well, which is...

9) How Much For Your Wings 10/10 Another acoustic tune that gets interrupted monetarily by some drums/ guitar and hand-clapping. Certainly nothing for some readers to moan about. Killer guitar that somehow is uplifting even though it deals with the sadness of loss. Brother Rich helps out on the vocals trading off behind Chris's singing of the verses.

10) Let Me Share The Ride- 7.5/10 Pretty standard road song. Sort of out of place at this point in the disc.

11) Better When You're Not Alone- 9.5/10 Seems like it would have fit perfect behind "Wings". Praises the joys of love and how it makes their world better. Never corny, just honest. Good upbeat ending.

12) Evil Eye- 10/10 Wow... What to say aboiut this song. Lyrics make you re-think you're whole outlook and disposition on love, beliefs, life and the world around you. Piercing guitar on top of some awesome drumming. Lyric: "Do you have in you to even try?" That should also be said for this whole album. Do try it!

Once in a while, the Hollywood marketing machine is made redundant by the viral campaign that develops, seemingly on its own, around a movie. In 2006, such a web phenom surrounded Snakes on a Plane months before its summer release. The movie was cool before it even opened, and that status is reflected on the kind of musicians on its soundtrack. For starters, it's co-released by Decaydance, the label run by Fall Out Boy's bassist Pete Wentz; this isn't a coincidence, as most of the bands involved belong to the same musical universe, including several with a connection to former FOB label Fueled by Ramen (The Academy Is…, Panic! At the Disco, Gym Class Heroes, the Hush Sound). The vibe is happy-go-lucky and exuberant, a feeling bolstered by the fact that while most of the songs aren't original, they've been remixed for extra-oomph by the likes of Tommie Sunshine and Teddybears. Among the few originals are the title track by Cobra Starship (an ad hoc "supergroup" made up of members of The Academy Is…, Gym Class Heroes, and The Sounds) and "Ophidiophobia" by Cee Lo Green, on loan from Gnarls Barkley. I <3 Snakes.......2007-06-21

This album is one of the best albums i've ever listened to & that says a lot since i've got a crap load of soundtracks. Every track is sometype of club mix & sounds excelent, sometimes even better then the original song itself. This cd is a must have!

Snakes On A Plane is going to be coming with something else????.......2007-02-11

I love this soundtrack, the unclean version though. It has a bunch of catchy tunes. I wonder if the sound quality of the first track is suppose to be with less bass and solid sound? The song sounds undermixed all Teh Teh and not boom boom. Pick this cd up you can't go wrong it is a companion album to go with the movie if you love the film itself?

There is only a few songs on the cd that's in the movie though, like the first song. The song by Gym Class Heroes and Cee Lo Green and the last 3 songs. The reason that I said that Snakes On A Plane is going to be coming with something else is that I just found out from an email from Varese Sarabande concerning the image mistake on their Nanny McPhee front and back cover art is that...well find out below for yourself the copy and paste info from my email under the February 27th relase date:

Fun Movie Soundtrack for a Fun Movie.......2006-11-06

For a movie like Snakes on a Plane, you'd expect the soundtrack to be just as goofy. The lead track, "Snakes on a Plane (Come On, Bring It)," is a fun start to an enjoyable album.
Many of the tracks are remixes that weren't really in the movie, but are neat anyway.
Definitely recommended to anyone who likes pop-remixes, campy movies and fun music.

Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26

Music score was great. Paul McCartney and Wings. Movie well fitted for Roger Moore, a great candidate for this role.
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.

I have only been waiting for this for 22 years! Granted when this was first released on LP (Vinyl record technology, pre cd, pre cassette and during the horror period of 8 track tapes!),
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.

The remastered release of LIVE AND LET DIE is much improved. The previous issue was no different than the track line up on the original 1973 vinyl record -- or eight track tape, depending on your antiquated stereo. Not only does this release include additional superb tracks, some of the original cuts have also been lengthened and more closely correspond the the film soundtrack. George Martin, the Beatles producer, took the helm from John Barry in scoring the eighth James Bond film soundtrack. Though no one has yet equaled Barry's compositions for Bond films, which we have not heard since 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, Martin's soundtrack was perfect for launching Roger Moore's first outing as Bond. Let us not forget Paul McCartney's brilliant theme of the same name.

The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.

There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.

Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.

Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16

Yes, that is my sentiment....in fact, it seems in all the other re-mastered Bond soundtracks, the best music is left out, and Live and Let Die was no exception.

George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....

Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.

But why the 3 stars rating?
We have to wait for Bond's 40th anniversary for the soundtrack's proper release, AND rebuy the soundtrack (I have it in cassette and CD and now the Re-master). Call me bitter, I think the people who runs the Bond empire should stop treating us fans so shabbily.

If the Deadly Snakes ever come to your town, you better go. You owe it to them. I've often wondered how their 6 piece band, complete with horns are able to eat while touring given the small dives I've seen them in. It used to be, for me, that anything produced by Greg Cartwright drew my attention (still true, check out the second Horrors record on In The Red records), but while I came for Greg Cartwright, I STAYED for the Deadly Snakes. Dark and frantic, it's not garage and not quite soul either...the D. Snakes are hard to pin down for somebody and eventually you have to stop trying. To quote an old gospel song, they live the life they sing about in their songs. You owe it to them to pay to see them, you owe it to yourself to see one of the best live bands in the world right now.

Buy "I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore" and "Ode To Joy" and "Porcella" and "Love Undone". Buy the Reigning Sound CDs too. All those CDs are on In The Red Records and they all slay dragons and fatten frogs for deadly snakes.

Flat out album of the year thus far!!!!.......2003-04-22

Having bought and loved both of the first two albums by the Deadly Snakes, I rushed out to get this one the day of realease. I have to admit, however, that I had prepared myself to be a little let down - after all, how many bands get better as they continue? Well, I'm VERY pleased to say that's exactly what has happened with the Deadly Snakes - this is by FAR their best album to date. They've married their love of garage rock, soul, blues and gospel more perfectly here than any band since the Rolling Stones circa 1972. I would also go on to say that it would benefit any one exploring the current crop of new "garage rock" bands to pick this up right away - the likes of the D4, Datsuns, Von Bondies, ect don't hold a candle to this group.

i was going through the other reviews for this cd and i found that most of them unhappy with this cd just cause its aint 94 (its aint danzig4) the 1st thing that i want to ask here, Do you want another danzig4? i dont, what im lookin for is a cd that will rock hard a cd that i wont feel that iv wasted my cash on. danzig had changed with age thats why his vocals are aint the same and the styles that his invinting are differ then the style that he sing in on danzig2 .. this is a cool cd that has its weaknesses in few parts specially some of the guitar work, the days that JC had rocked the world are gone, unfortunatly that even JC solo cd was an ok but not a killer. my advice is buy this cd and judge for your self if its worth the price. or wait for a special priced cd :)

a great album.......2007-02-24

This album is a great piece of work. The first gothic riffs of 'Wotan's Procession' gets you in the mood. 'Skincarver' comes charging out of the gate like a horse who wanted to get to the finish line yesterday. The title track is heavy and wonderful and the guitars sound incredible here. They have been at least double tracked (or tripled tracked). They are huge.

'1000 Devils Reign' has some great lyrics that recalls images of The Rebel Angels from John Milton's Paradise Lost. At least that's what i think of when I hear the 'floods of feathers fly' line. 'Skull Forrest is a quiet little song that was based on a dream Danzig had. The rhyming pattern and almost robotic structured drums are great for this song. This is one of my favorites. Hellmask is a heavy three minute song that wakes you back up again.

'When We Were Dead' and 'Night, Besodom' are the only two weak songs here. And even they are still good! And as he did on the I Luciferi album there are three great ending tracks here: 'My Darkness', 'Netherbound' and 'Black Angel, White Angel'

And as I've said in numerous other Danzig reviews, the sequence of these songs is perfect. But I always though this album was a bit short.(Only 42 minutes). Another 3 songs would have really filled this album out nicely. Some of those songs will be released on the upcoming Lost Tracks of Danzig CD. This should see release sometime in April or May of 2007. And if you like Danzig at all you will pick it up immediately, along with this album.

5 stars for this one. His voice is a bit worse for wear on this one (as it has been for the last 7 or 8 years) but the powerful guitars and drums make up for this. Buy this now and give it a listen.

solid album.......2007-01-12

i think this is a great album...i especially like skincarver. the beats are sick but yes, unfortunetely glenn's voice isnt what it used to be and the focus here is music more than vocals. the album still delivers the dark themes of his previous works so if you are a die-hard danzig fan like i am grab this asap it will not dissappoint.

Danzigs best since 4.......2006-06-26

Danzig has been a little..... off...... since Blackacidevil. Granted Danzig 6 and beyond were solid efforts. But Circle Of Snakes is his best effort in a looooong time. I credit it to the arival of one of my favorite axe men in Tommy Victor. Tommy's band Prong broke new ground in the early 90's, and was one of my favorites (Beg to Differ was a classic album). Tommy melds Prong-style riffs with the classic Danig sound pioneered by John Christ. The result is a great album.

In a few words, This album is great. Among his best. On Satan's Child he tried the Rob Zombie thing and it failed. This time he mixes his guitar style with Igor Cavalera-style drumming. WAY BETTER. Give it a shot.

Without a doubt, Bride's finest album to date. In my opinion, this album blows away any other metal album ever created. It's JUST that good. Dale Thompson's vocals are nothing short of amazing, as is his brother Troy's guitar work. And if you like this one, check out their other stuff. Bride is still alive and kickin'.

I was totally suprised when I listened to this cd. I really like there other ones but this has so much more depth its unreal. Definitely in the constant rotation for the last month. These guys are great at creating their own direction.

these arms are snakes are without a doubt my favorite rock (just to keep things simple let's just say rock) band in America right now. Easter outdoes the first two albums in a big way, and I liked Oxeneers a lot. their music is unbelievable, you have to really pay attention to these guys or you miss a lot.
I was lucky enough to see them in Columbia, SC about 2 months ago at a club where not more than 40-50 people were (because people there are apparently idiots, i drove 2 hours just for the show) and they absolutely killed. it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, America needs to hear this band...they are the cure for every mainstream, dry, disposable band (i agree with the previous reviewer about the "these arms are 'disco'") that i can think of. please please support these guys, they know exactly what they are doing.

Rising from the ashes of noisy math-rockers Botch and emo upstarts Kill Sadie, Seattle post-hardcore outfit These Arms Are Snakes has worked long and hard to reclaim both their identity and fan base. It hasn't been the easiest of processes; they've changed drummers more than a handful of times and their first album, while full of energy and vitality, was a shambling mess. But what Easter, their second full-length, reveals is that all this hard work hasn't gone to waste.

Easter is an ambitious record, packed tight with energy, aggression and a healthy dose of schizophrenia. Like a Kaiju movie klaxon warning of impending calamity, TAAS howls and screeches with equal parts excitement and foreboding. Steve Snere's surly snarl is in full effect, pouring out his stream of consciousness and boy howdy is it angry. Ryan Fredriksen's guitar screeches through dissonant licks and churns out heavy sludge with ease. The band is tighter than ever before, and it shows.

However, the album isn't without its flaws. The sequence of songs on the album is particularly dreadful. The first three tracks roar with unparalleled rage, building up the tension in an almost unbearable torrent of filth and fury. But the fourth track, "Desert Ghost," is a drum and piano number which is hauntingly melodic, but incredibly out of place. Everyone knows that track four is like the money shot of the album. You can't waste it with a slow burner like that. The poor sequencing breaks up the momentum and halts the album dead in its tracks.

These Arms Are Snakes are like aspiring cooks, working the kinks out of their recipe for hard-edged, cerebral punk rock. Their first EPs were like appetizers, spicy and palatable, but lacking in depth. Their debut was an explosive, but ultimately under-seasoned dish that was hard to swallow. Easter is an ambitious stew of ideas, styles and sounds. It is a fearless experiment that is complex in flavor but somewhat disproportioned and off-balanced. Who knows what the next album (and maybe some lineup solidifying) will bring?

Instant gratification. Constantly, people in this country are always trying to find the best ways for instant gratification. Perhaps, this is why our radio stations are filled with mindless pop that chewed up and spit out only to be forgotten. Thankfully, there are still albums like Easter and bands like These Arms Are Snakes. Here is an album that demands you give it a little breathing time like a fine wine. These Arms are Snakes show why patience is considered a virtue.

The first thing you'll notice listening to this entire album is that it doesn't have the catchy song structure of their previous album, Oxeneers or The Lion Sleeps... While Oxeneers showed a band that write catchy songs without comprising intregity, Easter shows a more technical and more balanced side of the band. The band displays an atmospheric feel without taking the whole Isis or Pelican route. Because of this, I would say that the album flows incredibly well.

Sound wise, These Arms are Snakes are the definition of post-hardcore. From the crunchy album opener, Mescaline Eyes, to the audible insanity of Crazy Woman Dirty Train, this band shifts every which way while maintaining a sound all their own. Always a strong suit, the album's production is top notch with everything heard in complete clarity. That credit can go to the band's drummer, Chris Common. The band's intention for Easter was clearly made for a live presence because I must say that I had distinct pleasure to witness this band play most of this album live. The band's energy level mixed with their music just go hand and hand, feeding off each other.

Overall, Easter is much like the holiday, full of vivid textures and emotions. I have always seen TAAS as what At The Drive In would sound like if they experimented (which is a compliment in the highest fashion). I am already curious to see in which direction the band heads next. I totally recommend this for anyone that is a fan of At The Drive In or Bear vs. Shark. My advice is to follow the lyrics to Horse Girl and "Treat like a push pin, push it till' it gets in".

these arms are "amazing" snakes..........2006-11-17

do you ever get bored of what's goin on in music these days? then you search and find a band that restores your faith and hope in music? that was totally the case when i found "oxeneers" about a year ago. listening to that record made me feel excited again about music and gave me hope that their are still some talented/credible bands out there still in a world where cliches are drowning out the airwaves and even the underground. when i heard that record along with their ep later, i thought to myself "what is this? i have never heard anything like this before."

this is the second full length from these arms are snakes and it's a great progression for the band. if you were a fan of "oxeneers" or their ep "this is meant to hurt you" you're guaranteed to like this one as well. it sounds a little post hardcore like "this is meant...", a little electronica and progressive like "oxeneers", as well as mixing in a new fresh sound which i would say is more experimental and even a little classic rock sound.

bottomline, these arms are snakes fans are going to love this album while if you're new to the band, "easter" wouldn't be a bad album to start off either. it's just as good, and perhaps better than their previous releases. all their albums thus far are epic and no one else is making this kind of music these days. very original and fresh. if you're unsure about buying the album, download "mescaline eyes", "horse girl", and "child chicken play". that should be all the convincing you need. i highly recommend this album to anyone.

These recordings deserve to be called legends. Maag's Scottish Symphony, recorded in 1960, is a gloriously warmhearted, energetic performance, beautifully recorded in mellow, vibrant sound. It set the recorded standard for this work for four decades, and it still does, surpassing even Maag's digital remakes. The Midsummer Overture and incidental music are just as convincing, if a tiny bit less well recorded. Too bad we had to lose the Hebrides Overture, which accompanied the Symphony on LP, but this is a very long CD with most of the contents of two classical LPs at a highly reasonable price. Maag is still active, recording for small labels with obscure European orchestras and still getting impressive results. --Leslie Gerber

Spirited in spite of spotty sloppiness.......2006-10-30

Peter Maag's conducting is nothing but exciting, but sometimes he demands more of the orchestra than can humanly be possible. Yet, while there are moment when intonation or attack might make you wince a bit, there is such life in this recording that I would still recommend it as a prized archive. The Scottish Symphony is probably Mendelssohn's greatest, and Maag's interpretation of it revives its rough, rocky, rainy side - it is so full of spirit that you'd swear the faeries are still alive in that foggy northern country. The same can be said of Maag's conducting in Midsummer Night's Dream - so vivid that it takes you into Shakespeare's land, but so ambitious that the orchestra and especially the chorus can't quite make it.... Yet the enthusiasm of it all is inspiring and this is by far not a poor recording. Actually, its spirit should be an inspiration to all, music lovers and music professionals alike, in spite of its few flaws.

Still the Freshest Midsummer Night's Dream on Records.......2006-04-20

Though this recording dates back almost fifty years (1957), for this listener this is the most exciting and enchanting version of Mendelssohn's 'Incidental Music for A Midsummer Night's Dream' available! Peter Maag conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in a fleetingly airy performance that draws so much of the flavor of Shakespeare's comedy that it outshines the competition. Maag also appropriately uses the female voices in two movements as per Mendelssohn's design and the parts of fairies as sung by Jennifer Vyvyan and Marion Lowe (two fine stalwarts from the era of this recording) are incredibly additive. Maag simply understands Mendelssohn's orchestration and draws a superlative performance from his orchestra.

And that is not to say that the Symphony No. 3 in A minor ("Scottish"), Op. 56 is not worthy of attention. Again Maag conducts with finesse and flair and makes the symphony sound as fresh and atmospheric as any conductor's performance today. Glorious Scottish!.......2005-10-14

Peter Maag was a superb conductor who pitifully has been forgotten for a remarkable audience. His sumptuous and noble style, the perfect articulation of the harmonic languages, color tonal, mercurial lyricism and adequate melodic balance, fit out to play Mendelssohn a colorist composer.

Herder and Goethe in literature and the composers Mendelssohn and Bruch were perhaps, the most enthusiastic artists engaged by this dreamingly land.

According Donald Tovey the second musical motive in the First Movement of the "Scottish" has been to his mind the most expressive and inspired melody ever written. The certain is that this Symphony remains not only as one of the most expansive and delirious Symphonic works ever written. Mendelssohn 's muse reached a peak hard to climb even by himself. We would have to wait for the Fifth Symphony to enjoy such enraptured inspiration and magic spell.

I have to remark that version is after the unbeatable Munch 's Boston Symphony, the most expressive and eloquent version that I have listened. The pureness and grace; the charm and lyricism literally float as a cloud around the members of the orchestra of the London Symphony.

In the Hebrides; we must employ a well known French expression: Chapeaux!. It is simply overwhelming. Elegant phrasing and aristocratic conception conform this beauty Overture.
Midnight summer 's dream finds two serious rivals: Ferenc Fricsay and Rafael Kubelik. But a deserved third place behind these two mesmerizing readings definitively confirms the status that many times we use to forget around the figure of this legendary director.

The Best From Before 1970.......2005-08-20

Peter Maag! Wow. I didnt know much about this conductor. In this 1960 recording, he conducts the formidable London Symphony Orchestra in a vibrant and spirited Mendelssohn program- The Third Symphony and Incidental Music to Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. Both works seem to flow into each other, despite the fact they would otherwise not sound well in the same CD. Midsummer NIghts' Dream is the seller here though. It sounds gorgeous. The English are proud of this particular work because of its basis in Shakespeare's classic comedy/fantasy. Mendelssohn was also Queen Victorias' favorite composer and he was himself English/Jewish. The music is perfectly suited to the play. The Overture is thrilling and romantic, sounding a lot like a synopsis of the entire work even using themes played out later in the work. The Nocturne is so placid and soulful. The Wedding March is famous, of course, and the way its played here is just wonderful, full of vigorous clarity and beauty. The only other good recording of this is an EMI release I believe conducted by another Brit Andre Previn. The cover has an old painting of a scene from the play- Oberon and Titania in the forest surrounded by their entourage.

Very good except for one important drawback........2005-07-31

In my opinion this recording of Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony is very good except that the timpani part is almost inaudible. The timpani are important in this symphony; they reinforce the sound at crucial moments. I know what the symphony should sound like, and at those many moments in this recording I have to use my imagination. That is a shame. It is the only thing that keeps this performance from being marvelous.

Marsden, Moody & Murray are back.......2003-02-07

The core of Company Of Snakes is the two former members of Whitesnake's best line up (Bernie Marsden & Mickey Moody). When they first formed the band they hired a "Coverdale-sound-alike" singer and simply called the band The Snakes. That line up released one album titled "Once bitten..." and it sounded so similar to (early) Whitesnake that some people actually were fooled to believe it was Whitesnake! After some internal problems the singer got fired, and ex Bad Company vocalist Robert Hart joined the band and the name was changed to Company Of Snakes (an obvious reference to Bad Company & Whitesnake). Robert Hart didn't stay so Marsden and Moody recruited an unknown singer from Sweden - Stefan Berggren, and the well known bass player Neil Murray, who also was a member of the classic Whitesnake line up.

"Burst the bubble" is a good album although it contains too many songs, which has a tendency to draw attention away from the real highlights. If they cut down the number of tracks, to say 10 songs, it would be a much more solid effort.

Some of the songs are in fact re-recordings of tunes from their debut album ("Once bitten..."). I'm sorry to say, but the great "Little miss happiness" were even better in the original version when it was slightly faster and groovier, but it's still one of the best songs. Other outstanding tracks are:

"Labour of love", a bluesy rocker with the same excellent vocal arrangements we got used to listening to David Coverdale back in the mid 1970's.

"Ride, ride, ride" with its obvious similarity to "Outlaw" from Whitesnake's album "Lovehunter".

"What love can do" sounds very much like more recent Whitesnake ballads like "The deeper the love" - a bit soft but still good.

"Back to the blues" - like the title implies it's a blues based rock song, better than the average.

I like the fact that Berggren keep his singing rather low, and not try to impress us with the "high pitch screams" some other vocalists seem to think is the main task of being a rock singer. If you sit around complaining about the current state of music and wonder where all the good times have gone, I think this album would be of interest. It's not as good as Whitesnake's "Love hunter" and "Ready an' willing" but it's the closest thing to the original at this time.

The Company Of Snakes take the Pre-1987 Whitesnake sound and run with it.After the mostly covers Double CD "Here They Go Again" this CD is all new material.I knew pretty much what I was going to be getting before the CD arrived all except for one thing - Stefan Berggren's vocals!!! He sounds like David Coverdale but He does not sound like He is 'trying" to sound like Him.Nice to know there's younger singers out there who can sing like this! I see a bright future for Him! Bottom line, this is bluesy soulfelt hard rock that would be at home in the late 70's/early 80's and right at home in My CD player!!!
