This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars rhythm music.......2007-06-08

I bought this for a friend after I bought it for myself. Great variety of songs. Wonderful for parties. Would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars red hot and best!.......2007-05-14

of the many red hots i've listened to, this one is the best!

the music, those great catchy samba and bossa nova tunes that became wildly popular during the 1960s, are suited to each of the artists making a guest appearance on the cd.

among the highlights are the trip-hop infused 'corcovado' by everything but the girl, the dance-club happy 'boy from ipanema' by crystal waters--which also contains one of her best vocal performances--, sting's loving, pensive 'how insensitive', maxwell's calming 'security' and caetano veloso's highly erotic 'e preciso perdoar'.

the collection, generally speaking, is a great party cd and each song is treated with a great deal of ingenuity and integrity.

4 out of 5 stars New Takes on Brazilian Pop.......2005-06-30

Now, mind you, I can't tell the samba from the bossa nova from...some other type of music that might be played in Brazil. But I still have an interest in hearing the quasi-tropical cocktail lounge-style pop tunes of this mighty South American giant. They speak Portugese there, you know. And are known to launch at a moment's notice into the lamabada, which is a forbidden dance.

Most of the songs contained herein were written way back in the day by Antonio Carlos Jobim and at least a few should be vaguely familiar: "The Girl From Ipanema", of course, but also "One Note Samba", "Waters Of March", and "Water To Drink". But these aren't the original versions--they're updates in a variety of styles. Some work pretty well, some will make you want to hurl (mainly Sting's take on "How Insensitive", which is droning and pointless).

Notable are: a punched-up synth-heavy "Ipanema" by one-hit-wonder Crystal Waters, jazz group Incognito on "Water To Drink", world-music-loving David Byrne and sultry Marisa Monte on "Waters Of March", the well-known Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto with the lesser-known Cesaria Evora on "E Preciso Perdoar", Stereolab's quirky and strange "One Note Samba", and Bebel Gilberto on "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo".

The Red Hot series, which started with the Cole Porter tribute "Red Hot + Blue", has always done excellent work and this compilation is no exception. If you'd like to sample Brazilian pop music of a certain era but you're terrified of breaking out your dad's dusty old Jobim LPs, this is a great way to see what's what.

Also the liner notes are extensive and informative, so you really get your money's worth. I'm still not clear on the divide between samba and bossa nova, but I reckon that's my fault.

4 out of 5 stars Listening Pleasure-RED HOT+RIO.......2004-03-03

I enjoyed 1.Used Your Head by Money Mark, 2.Corcovado done by Everything but the Girl, the funkie beats were great, 3.Desafinado done by Astrud Gilberto & George Michael was soothing and relaxing, 4.Non-Fiction Burning was enjoyable 5.Crystal Waters' version of The Boy from Ipenema, LOVED IT!! the music makes your body want to move, it will be favorite, 7.Seguranca (Security) done by MAXWELL with that sultry soft voice of his & the music, this is a favorite, 8.E Preciso Perdoar done by Cesaria Evora & Caetano Veloso w/Ryuichi Sakamoto on the keyboard, Damn I love Cesaria's voice, she got off, this is definetly a favorite, 10.Water to Drink by Incognito w/Omar & Anna Caram was nice, 11.Dancing by Milton Nascimento was enjoyable, 12.How Insensitive done by Antonio Carlos Jobim & Sting, I didn't care for Sting singing this song, I do enjoy Sting's music but not this, he wasn't the man for it. 13.Water of March done by David Byrne & Marisa Monte was okay, but I enjoy Al Jarreau & Oleta Adams rendition on "A Twist of Jobim" better, 15.One Note Samba/Surfboard by Stereolab & Herbie Mann, I didn't care for that techno or computer sounding stuff, it sounded like the music on The Wiz when they were trying to get away from the trash cans, it will get a skip, 17.Black Orpheus Dub by Mad Professor, it had sort of a Rasta, funk, techno flair which was okay, 18.Chico Science & X DJ Soul Slinger, I couldn't get into that either, that will get a skip too, 19.Funk'N Lata's Sambadrome, was short & funky, 20.Giberto Gil's Refazenda, his voice went well with the song, 21.Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo done by Cazuza & Bebel Gilberto was nice, but the sound was off, it sounded like they were singing in a tube. I manly purchased this CD because it had my 2 favorite singers Maxwell and Cesaria Evora & I enjoyed both of their songs immensely. I am totally satisfied with this purchase and it will be one of my favorite CDs which I listen to often.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Jobim Fans.......2002-07-16

If you like Bossa Nova, particularly Antonio Carlos Jobim, you will love this CD. It has covers by many current artists of his songs, as well as some other Brazilian music. I like how the liner has the lyrics in English, but almost all the songs are in Portuguese. The David Byrne Waters of March in an exception, where he sings in English, and a woman is singing in Portuguese, but it works out very well.

An excellent addition. I have most of the songs on the album on at least two other CDs, but the artists have played with the songs enough to complement the originals.

Album Description

Flora Purim is the critically acclaimed Brazilian-jazz vocalist who has been making excellent albums for over three decades. In the late 70's she made three outstanding albums for Warner Bros. records, none of which have been issued on CD until now. Wounded Bird Records proudly presents Carry On originally released in 1979. Produced by George Duke, he is also featured on keyboards. Also featured are her husband, Airto, plus Al Jarreau, Joe Farrell, Ronnie Foster, Bobby Lyle & Michael Sembello. It features a rousing rendition of Jeff Beck's 'Freeway Jam'. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Flora Purim's "Pop Album".......2006-11-14

Flora's third Warner Brothers album features pop/lite r&b production by fusion keyboard maestro George Duke who spices up the formula by adding Brazilian arrangements to many of the songs presented here. The semi-funky title track has Ms. Purim trading lines with jazz singer extrodinare Al Jarreau, while "Niura Is Coming Back," "Once I Ran Away" and "Corrine" sound right at home on pop and smooth jazz stations. Other highlights on this magnificent album include the bouncy opener "Sarara", the intense "From The Lonely Afternoon" and the very romantic "Broken Kiss". Purim and Duke slightly miss the boat on the pointless short interlude "Islands In The Sun", and the remakes of Mtume's "Love Lock" and Jeff Beck's "Freeway Jam", which pale in comparison to the smokin' originals. But CARRY ON sucessfully proves that the elements of creativity and commercialism can come together to offer the listener a delightful album.

4 out of 5 stars Flora & George Duke weave Brazilian magic together.......2003-09-26

In 1979, George Duke took a break from his funky R&B successes to produce this Brazilian-jazz fusion record for Flora Purim. The result is one of Flora's best albums. Milton Nascimento's "From the Lonely Afternoon" is a highlight, given a more intense, upbeat interpretation here than the version he recorded with Wayne Shorter on "Native Dancer". Duke's original contribution, "Carry On", displays his polished R&B techniques, seasoned with a heavy dash of Brazilian spice. Max Middleton's "Freeway Jam", a Jeff Beck Group hit, is another highlight, with Flora's voice replacing Beck's guitar as the primary melody instrument.

Brazilian vocalist Flora Purim brought a unique approach to her art that profoundly altered the nature of vocalization. She expands the basic techniques of vocalise--where every syllable is phrased like a note played on a reed or brass instrument--to include world music. On the title track her voice shifts, like a chameleon, from an exotic bird camouflaged by the jungle of husband Airto Moreira's percussion effects to a soothing delivery more reminiscent of Astrud Gilberto. By the time she sings "Dindi" in Portugese, her style so encompasses the content that the shift of language sounds perfectly natural. On "Dr. Jive" she dives into a dense fusion of Latin jazz powered by Stanley Clarke's inspired bass and some of the best keyboarding in George Duke's career. Joe Henderson delivers a stellar performance on tenor sax and flute, to boot. --John Swenson

This is a very great set, and great performances.
This album is one of the finest brasil-psycho-jazz-fusion albums ever made.

The switch from Dr.Jive to Light as a feather is amazing, the performance of the band with light as a feather (a real Jazz classic) is superb, never heard this song so good as on this album. A wannahave!

5 out of 5 stars Good News for 'A music fan from Chicagoland ' on this page!.......2003-01-24

"still trying to figure out if there's a CD that includes her rendition of "You're Everything" - yes!! - it's on Return to Forever's Light As A Feather, a fantastic latin jazz album with beautiful Fender Rhodes electric piano playing from Chick Corea among other luminaries, and, as on this Flora's in fine voice on a few tracks - buy it if you like this, or latin-influenced jazz!!

5 out of 5 stars Dreamy, indeed.......2002-10-26

Two summers ago I was looking for a new CD to buy. Although I was intrigued by "new/neo" soul, I wasn't in the mood for hip-hop based music. I did want to hear something soulful, but whose fundamental component was jazz... and I wanted something that drew on a wider base than the American tradition. The music on "Butterfly Dreams" was exactly the type of music I was looking for. I guess I was really in a retro/nostalgic mood - my description of the music (though uninformed) is that it's similar to some of Stevie Wonder's 70's music, only authentically (as opposed to ostensibly) rooted in jazz. It has all of the elements of an enjoyable jazz or popular album - the solos are fun, and the melodies range from joyful to melancholic. The musicians are all jazz legends in their own right, and Flora herself is a refreshingly unique and inspirational vocalist. Much of what I said above applies to "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly" as well (though it's much more energetic and varied), but I prefer "Butterfly Dreams" - the mood is more consistent (mellow - even the more up-tempo songs are light and "dreamy") and the songs are more haunting.

2 out of 5 stars there were many over indulgences in the 70's.......2002-04-07

... earth muffinish philosophies translated into boring music were some of the least harmful. this is a good example. maybe 1.5 tunes on this album are worth listening to more than once. in fairness, the same could be said for many artists and albums of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2001-08-25

After wearing out the grooves in the original LP, it's wonderful to have this CD. Flora's music took me through college and I introduced her to many others. It's lovely to hear Butterfly Dreams, Dindi, Moon Dreams, and Light As A Feather again. I'm still trying to figure out if there's a CD that includes her rendition of "You're Everything". That was special. If anyone can clue me in, please do.

I must agree with most reviews, Flora is absolutely transcendent. I would perhaps pick Butterfly Dreams over Stories to tell, just for her version of Dindi. But if you truely want to go to heaven and stay there, I recommend you buy both albums, and play Insensatez & Dindi back to back. This really is as good as it gets

5 out of 5 stars The Best Flora Purim Album Ever Made!.......2001-12-06

I wish I could give this CD collection TEN stars. "Stories To Tell" is my favorite Flora Purim album, by far. Many claim "Butterfly Dreams" is her best but my favorite is "Stories To Tell". Flora was at the top of her career when this album was made and her work is simply outstanding....OUTSTANDING!! The cast of musicians on this CD will startle you. Absolutely the best Latin jazz musicians in the world played with her. I will leave you guessing as to who they are. (OK, just one hint, Carlos Santana does some of his best work ever on "Silver Sword".)

If you buy just one Flora Purim CD, this MUST be it. I repeat: THIS IS THE BEST FLORA ALBUM EVER MADE (in my humble opinion of course)!!!

5 out of 5 stars This recording will take you to the isles of paradise!.......1999-08-07

Flora Purim's voice is that of the wind, captivating and soothing all at the same time. The song "Mountain Train" reminds me of a beautiful summer day with how Purim works her magic on this song. The entire CD is wonderful to listen to, you definitely will not be disappointed. This is a classic Flora Purim recording. When you want to be in a better mood or even in a sense of paradise listen to this CD. Flora Purim's voice is soothing and calming. This CD has brought back numerous memories from childhood since I have been listening to Purim from childhood. I have grown up listening to "Stories to Tell" and those songs still bring a smile to my face and soul! This is definitely the best of the best of Flora Purim.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Jazz fusion vocalist at her peak.......2006-05-14

I checked out the actual LP of this record because I'd heard Purim's vocals on one of my all-time favorite fusion discs, Chick Corea's "Return to Forever." "500 Miles High" is a Corea track from his Return to Forever line-up's "Light as a Feather" double-album, which also features Airto and Purim.

So, call this Brazil via Corea, and throw in Brazilian soft pop croomer Milton Nascimento on one track, "Cravo e Canela" (Cinnamon and Cloves)." I remember Nascimento from the CD that introduced me to Tropicalia and Brazilian music in general, the David Byrne-compiled "Brazil Classics: Vol. 1."

Purim is a bit of an acquired taste. I think she sounds a bit screechy in that early 70s kitschy sort of way, but she employs it well on this album, able to scat jive with the driving Latin rhythm, her voice a complement to the groove, especially on the roasting last track, "Jive Talk."

I love live albums, especially live fusion, and even more if it's Brazilian and from the early 70s. Purim's "500 Miles High" fits the bill. It also benefits from a highly percussive sound and the use of berimbaus, a uniquely Brazilian instrument (it looks like a bow and arrow) used in the Afro-Brazilian martial art, capoeira.

4 out of 5 stars Ron Carter is Far From Dead!.......2005-06-23

I saw him @ Catalina's in H'wood. It was magnificent. Purim soars on this live recording. The Fender Rhodes is a wonderful compliment to her unique vocals.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and exotic musical Performance........2004-01-16

Flora Purim, with the aid of husband Aierto, and players like the late Ron Carter on Bass, produced an album that had one foot in the world of Jazz, and the other in Brazil. At times contimplative as in the opening, "O Cantador", Ms. Purim quickly switches gears, she moans and scats Flora style into a set that includes Her most famous collaboration with Chick Corea, "500 Miles High", as well as other mood songs like "Bahia(The Wind)", a meditation that contains such beautiful lyrics that you almost forget yourself and you are transformed to some breezy evening in Brazil. As an earlier reviewer noted, I had the album when I was 17, growing up in New York, and cannot name a more ingaging, intimate yet wild, exotic fruit of an album to get aquainted with what Flora Purim is really about.

5 out of 5 stars THE 'FIRST LADY OF BRAZIL' SOARS WITH THIS CLASSIC SET!!!.......2001-08-07

Brazil's national treasure Flora Purim has never sounded more beautiful than in this incredible concert CD!!! With her flashback from her 'Return to Forever' days, she delivers the goods on the dizzyingly beautiful song '500 Miles High'!!! The effects that Flora produces with that voice are astonishing. It transcends that of other live performers by miles - (500 miles, to be exact!!!) FINALLY - this is available on CD!!! It's a rare classic!!!!!! Fly high with Flora Purim by adding this amazing classic to your collection!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars First time to hear a voice go so far beyond "just singing.".......1999-04-29

This collection offers a fascinating extrapolation of Flora Purim from her "Return to Forever" days. I was simultaneously thrilled, curious, and convinced. I've since heard other voice artists, but none have compared to the original. Her range, expression, and inventiveness are truly aparadigmatic--then and still.

Im so glad that again with this release Flora has chosen more of an acoustic feel for the album ( as she did with the last one on Narada Jazz. Also its wonderful again to here her signing more standards and originals in English ...I love the tone and sound of her accent when she sings in English it gives the standards a whole new and feel....as always the musicians are superb....

Go Flora, a woman at the top of her craft!

4 out of 5 stars 3 & 1/2 Stars, really..........2003-02-02

...but since it's Flora after all, we'll round it up to four. I hate to say it, but based on this album & seeing all but one show of her 2003 run at Yoshi's, time is catching up to Flora's voice. That said, what a voice for time to catch up to! Like her other Narada releases, this one features excellent fidelity, traps playing by Airto that will bring a smile to your face & an almost palpable sense of Flora's wonderful spirit being right there in the room with you. To these ears, the Brazilian numbers still work better than the North American ones, but heaven knows she's earned the right to take a swing at 'em.

5 out of 5 stars just great1.......2003-01-31

This is such a neat album. Though not as outstanding as Perpetual Emotion, Flora just seems to be having fun here with some great songs and relaxed delivery. Many of the songs have a feel of a live performance & it was probably just that way with no overdubs. Who's voice wouldn't crack a bit on an exhausting performance of Moon Dreams. Her rendition of It Ain't Necessarily So is outstanding!!!--and what a great way to interpret the song. Her backing musicians make this great jazz and it's nice to see her settled into a mature jazz singer in total command of her craft.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music.......2004-06-13

This is one of my all time favorite latin jazz albums. It features wonderful vocals from Airto and Flora and of course amazing percussion from Airto. The supporting cast is equally strong with Kei Akagi on piano and the great Joe Farrell on saxophone. Kei Akagi is an amazing piano player who went on to play with Miles Davis. I use to see him with Stanley Turrentine and later saw him do a show with a nice quartet including Rick Margitza. Kei reminds me of Bill Evans or Allan Broadbent combined with McCoy Tyner, a very sweet combination. Of historical significance on this album, it was the last recording of Joe Farrell prior to him death. Joe Shines with his obviously Coltrane influenced soloing. This album is live and well recorded, the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars THE WAY MUSIC SHOULD BE RECORDED!.......2001-01-29

This is a very moody album. There is hypnotic, smooth feeling to these tracks that is positively magical. The selections are eclectic, and there is something special in every piece. Track 1 begins with a fretless four-string acoustic bass and hand clapping, and builds into a colorful array of guitar and vocals. And what sonics! The entire recording was accomplished in Oxnard CA's civic auditorium-with a single mike! This creates a true sense of space around the musicians and singers. No electronic reverb here. You may not listen to this all the time, but it will grow on you. Turn off the lights and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Beauty then, beautiful now.......2005-07-28

Owned this recording as a record 25 years ago. Bought it again as a CD because it is so beautiful and am happy to have the sounds back in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Much like the artist herself..........2002-05-20

...this album has aged well. I like it much more now than when it was released. And speaking of released, this is her comeback album after doing time at Terminal Island. So as you might expect, it's particularly joyous and free; two adjectives often associated with Flora. Although it has a much different feel, it shares with Wayne Shorter's "Native Dancer" Americans and Brazilians working together wonderfully. Hermeto Pascoal is dynamite here.

    5 out of 5 stars Flora's masterpiece.......2001-06-16

For decades, Flora Purim has been the Queen of Brazilian Soul. Open Your Eyes You Can Fly stands as her masterpiece. She recorded it in 1976, following her 18 month prison term for alledged drug possession. And, boy, does she ever feel free. This album has only recently beome available on CD. It was worth the wait; the CD mastering is superb.

A dream band backs Flora, including her husband, Airto; George Duke on keyboards; Flora's mentor, the peerless Hermento Pascoal on flute and keyboards; the great Ron Carter sits in on bass for "san Fransisco River", one of the many highlights (there are so many highlights it's hard to choose). But the young, underrated Alphonso Johnson, on acoustic and electric bass, is the album's secret weapon.

Not only is this one of the great jazz albums of the Seventies (a wildly underrated and misunderstood decade for jazz), this is one of the great albums - period - of th Seventies. This album certainly sits in the Pantheon of my favorite albums of this period. While, over a quarter-century later, Open Your Eyes You Can Fly has well stood the test of time, I think you will also find it delightfully, immediately accessible; it's one of those rare music masterpieces of which both can be stated. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A Jazz-Fusion Classic.......2000-07-17

Flora Purim, who is recognized more frequently as having a strong connection to husband Airto, and Chick Corea and Return To Forever, released a conceptual solo album in 1976 entitled "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly." The cover and album title speak of one main focus, freedom. This is in a literal and real life sense for Purim. She had just been released from a prison term on drug charges.

Each song is a celebration of life and the freedom that can be found, if one opens their eyes to see. George Duke and Airto, among others, add their strong presence to this effort. Purim has an angelic and airy vocal style that endears you to her anthem and music. She uses many resources by accessing her cultural roots, and musical background to brew a stew of Latin-progressive-jazz that defies categorization and genre placement.

The essence and core of Purim's being is found interlaced amongst the musical meandering and transitory complexities of jazz. Freedom, and the celebration that's found in the music, has a firm foothold on this entire session. At times you will hear her singing like a beautiful songbird taking flight, or using her voice as an instrument rather than relating a message through her own words. The music and sound of her vocalizations clearly declare her new found freedom and rebirth into humanity.

Latin music and jazz are not strange bedfellows; they can lay side by side, or conveniently depart to go in any direction without breaking the ties that hold them together. Visually you will see how the concept of this whole project becomes a reality with the all change and celebration going on all around it. The music and words are separate entities, yet they consummate a partnership by making both factors proportionate to each other. Music like this is further proof that it should be acknowledged as a sentient being. It all takes on a meaning and life of it's own with the help of Purim's individuality and expressiveness.

The percussion and strings enhance the listeners experience and give the music a strength and mystical element heretofore not found in other music. What's so interesting and absorbing about this music is they way it changes it's flight so rapidly without ever falling. Progressive jazz normally has odd time signatures provoked by the shouting rock elements. This doesn't happen at all during these sessions. The lead guitar is clear, clean and focused when exploring the electric aspects of the style. All the instruments, along with Purim's lovely voice becoming one with the soundscape, will hold you glued to the speakers until the curtain falls.

Climb aboard, the freedom train is ready to carry you to wherever your heart desires.

    5 out of 5 stars Flora's Freedom Flight.......2000-06-08

It's about time that this jewel was released on CD. This was Flora's freedom flight in the USA and it contains the distinct bass signature of master Alphonso Johnson. This recording was there to help define the Fusion era and it contains the best elements of that period. The title track will stick in your mind for days. Flora is at her best chasing wordless vocals. Her voice is still pure bliss to hear. A great addition for lovers of Chick Corea's earlier RTF and Weather Report. Enjoy!
