3 out of 5 stars After all these years!.......2006-02-26

I've been searching for a copy of the infamous "Troglodyte" for around 30 years. I remember when it was on every playlist at every rock station in the S.F. Bay Area for many weeks, and I loved it! A few years later, I began to try and track down some of my favorite oldies, loonnnnng before the internet existed. This one was problematical, since I didn't even know the name of the band.

Now, decades later, I have obtained a copy on CD from Amazon. I anxiously plugged it into my player and descovered, much to my delight, that I STILL love that off-the-wall, trippy, decidedly NON-PC song. The only downside is that, with a few exceptions, the rest of the disk seems like throwaway filler. No matter. I've finally obtained yet another of the "Old Songs I'm Obsessed With Obtaining." Thanks, Amazon!

Other examples of OSIOWO's I've managed to procure over the years: "Too Hot to Handle" bu the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils, the album "Impressions" by Mike Oldfield, the concert film "Home of the Brave" by performance artist Laurie Anderson, and a host of others.

4 out of 5 stars KOMOSOMEY KONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-13

With the hype of the new King Kong movie, i'm not surprised that they are not plugging "King Kong". I have to admit, DC was in love with this band. I can remember this first hit "Hey Leroy" but the flip side was the bomb I cant recall the name of the song. Then years later, Troglodyte came out. It was a song that you would listen too...but when he came out with the Bertha Butt Boogie, it was over. I can remember the house parties and that was a favorite. I can remember playing a few cuts off of the album with Bertha Butt. Then he came out with "King Kong" Which was another dance tune. The good thing about those 45's (Bertha & Kong), they were part's 1 & 2. And man we would JAM! Some times played King Kong over and over and over. He did not make main stream but DC loved the Jimmy Castor Bunch. As a matter of fact, He was on the bill when Parliament-Funkadelic played in DC in 1976 @ The Cap Centre. I will get this album for the few cuts I like. I hope the long versions of the songs are on here but if they are not. I still have my 45's. Ha ha!

good. I'm trying to find a song by jimmy castor bunch, called the prince of darkness, it's a 70's deal, the only thing about the album I remember is he is sitting on a motor cycle, and I think the album cover is light brown or tan. If someone has this, or information about it, send only e-mail to TNT4EVR@MCHSI.COM

5 out of 5 stars E-Man/Everything Man.......2003-09-18

I have listened to Jimmy Castor Bunch since I was a kid back in the 70's. I've enjoyed all of his music. There is one particular song that I cant get. Its called E-man or Everything Man. I remember the album cover has a black guy in a Superman type suit with an E on his chest. I wonder if its no longer in print.
If anyone can help me please email me anibaltejada@avaya.com
or barrioboricua@ij.net
I would be extremely appreciative since this is the only song missing from my Jimmy Castor Bunch collection. And its one of his best.

4 out of 5 stars Covers 3 Albums from the early 70's.......2002-10-02

This covers 3 RCA albums by Castor from 72/73. If your're like me, the Rhino Best of loses steam after "Bertha Butt Boogie" and the Disco era moves in. Castor's disco records weren't as good as his funk ones. So, this CD doesn't have "Bertha" or his first hit "Hey Leroy You're Mama's Callin' You", but it's a tight, funky collection of his RCA years. These were arguably his best years. Not all of this is funky. There's a smooth instrumental remake of "First Time Ever I Saw You're Face". And there's a couple of straight up Soul songs. As a companion to the Rhino collection this is a must if you like that CD. Only 3 songs are duplicated from the Rhino CD. There's liner notes and great sound. So, this is indeed a great collection for Castor fans to own.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2007-02-08

To begin, this CD has two discs (!!) and the price on Amazon is much much better than retail stores.
I am a fan of Kanye West, I enjoy hip hop, rap and R&B. I also love the old school music that inspired the young artists we listen to now, such as Al Green, Etta James, James Brown, etc. A lot of my friends are into music and in the business and they introduced me to this CD. I love it. Jay-Z and Tu-Pac also have a Gold Digging As Sampled By....

If you like Kanye, but don't enjoy what your parents listen to, this might not be the best CD for you.
The way I see it is if a fan of Kanye West likes his music, he should also like the music that inspired the artist. And that would be this CD.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid!.......2007-01-10

Great funk from an innovator with a great sense of humor. Sounds like they were having fun!

5 out of 5 stars Funk on Acid.......2000-08-14

This collects the two best albums by a criminally underappreciated master of 70s funk. Jimmy Castor dared to go out as far on a limb as George Clinton, but managed to preserve a sense of humor in the process. It's Just Begun is worth owning just for the hit, "Troglodyte" (sampled by everyone from the Beasties to NWA). But that's not its best tune. That honor goes to the title track, which leads off with Aaron Coplandesque strings and thence to a horn/guitar piece good enough to make James Brown weep. The remaining tracks are solid.

Phase 2 is Castor's weirdest record, beginning with tributes to Castor's hero, Leroy ("Say Leroy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon is your Father") and Jimmy Hendrix (I'll bet you didn't know that Foxy Lady and Purple Haze are the same song, did you?). Also a bit of Latin funk, straight funk, and acid rock.

If you like funk, and don't mind taking a risk, this disc will make you happy.
