This compilation project's official title is already long enough, but for true accuracy it should read, The Best of Ottmar Liebert's First Two Recordings, Volume 1. Barcelona Nights strings together the more upbeat and animated selections from his two earliest recordings, Nouveau Flamenco (his famed debut) and Borrasca (plus one track, "Festival," from Poets and Angels). The package serves as the first installment in a two-disc series; the subsequent Surrender to Love will patch together romantically inclined selections of those early 1990s recordings. It's the same music, but with different sequencing and different packaging. As such, it offers graceful and pleasant listening, though the similarity in tempos gives the disc a slightly homogenous feel. Many like-minded guitarists have traveled the path that Liebert originally blazed, and Barcelona Nights offers an appealing reminder of the qualities that elicited such a huge initial reception: nimble, articulate fingerwork; charming, uncomplicated melodies; and just enough flamenco authenticity to convince maturing pop listeners that they had discovered something exotic. Highlights include the beckoning cheer of the well-known title track, and the earnest, uplifting energy of another early hit, "Heart Still/Beating." --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Great High Octave Guitar Jazz.......2006-08-24

I have been a fan of Ottmar for a long time. This album is very good. Every tune is great to listen to. A great sound for all guitar music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars If you are looking for new sounds come and get it!.......2006-06-12

Among the most creative and imaginative musicians in the last generations, Liebert must be included in the most representative lists. His creativeness and above all his powerful vision in what it concerns to the necessary oxygen the Flamenco needed, was intuited by him and so dedicated all his energies in search of its renovation, achieving a remarkable success.

To my mind the most interesting tracks of this valuable album are: Heart still beating, Barcelona nights, Santa Fe, Isla del sol, Bullfighter's dream and La Rosa Negra, but there is not any minor track.

If you really are searching for new inspiration motives and creative sounds, this album is a must for you.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice music, Ottmar is very talented!.......2004-02-09

I don't understand why people so closed mind, this is new millenium, think out of the box, there is no right or wrong about music, there's only about good or bad, who really care about so called "real" Flamenco, as long as easy listening, and creative, I think Liebert is very talented. I like "Barcelona Nights" very much, I play it in my car, at home, never tired of listening. Keep up your good work, Liebert, play more new song!

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother........2004-02-01

Disappointing all the way. You can call Mr. Leibert a sort of `Yanni' of the guitar. Need I say more?

5 out of 5 stars Cross-pollination angers Nationalists.......2003-09-30

Oh please, all these people who are so worried about this genre blending with their sacred "Flamenco." Some of the best Flamenco-inspired music is stuff like this and the work of Steve Stevens, artists who think outside the box. Music is flexible and evolving; what you call it or label it doesn't matter. Nobody seems to mind that Ricky Martin or Enrique Igelsias represent "Spanish" or "Latin" pop music. To me, Alberto Iglesias would be the real deal!

In my estimation, Flamenco has always been an art form influenced by many different forces and subject to change and evolution. Why is there such a nationalistic pride among many of its fans that ends up precluding such visionaries as Liebert, who have devoted their lives to making wonderful music, from taking part? Is it because he is not 100% Spanish?

The same exclusionary mentality that wants to limit Flamenco works well in Bible music in the South. The irony is that a Latin talent is often more welcome in other genres than a Gringo's is to Flamenco. The entire genre of Flamenco suffers much more from exclusionary thinking than it does from cross-pollination. How sad that such a beautiful art form is tainted by control freaks. Those of you who bash the likes of Liebert bash one who is intensely accomplished and pays such homage and utmost respect (not to mention commercial attention and longevity) to the art form. Very sad, indeed. You should be bashing Ricky and Enrique first!

Those of you who are so close-minded (You're probably ignoring me because of my Gringo status, anyway) should check out a really cool blue grass band I know. You'll be made to feel much more welcome than Liebert has in the wild world of Flamenco "purists."

This album is a wonderful collection of soulful, technically masterful sounds from a true visionary who pays the highest tribute to Spanish guitar by infusing it with fresh blood and vouchsafing its wonders to the masses. And it's better quality Flamenco than lots of other stuff on the market! Oh, sweet blasphemy! This is no dilettante - this man lives and breathes his music.

Other genres should only be so lucky!

5 out of 5 stars I'm A Kid Again.......2007-02-23

Like everyone else, I know Bert Kaempfert's music from watching Sandy Becker. I smile every time I hear it. I'm sorry that "Echo In The Night" is not on this CD, though. It was one of my favorite songs to listen to on the radio when I was a kid. It's amazing how the music stays with you after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Bert Kaempfert.......2007-01-12

I am old enough to remember the Sandy Becker Show, the Match Game and several other shows that used Mr. Kaempfert's music as a theme or sound logo. The music on this CD is carefully re-mastered and sounds as fresh as it did in 1966.

If you remember my above references, too, then pay extra attention to Afrikaan Beat, That Happy Feeling and A Swingin' Safari.

5 out of 5 stars Great Artist, Great Music.......2006-11-03

This cd really exemplifies the composing and conducting talents of Bert Kaempfert. This album is cheerful with a wonderful blend of winds and strings....simply the BEST!!!

4 out of 5 stars Schpinal Tap?.......2007-01-03

I've heard many of these Scorpions songs over the years and thought they were the kind of band that Spinal Tap was spoofing. But when I recently heard "The Zoo" blaring out from the local classic rock station (and could not help myself from singing along), I wondered about the odds of a German band becoming superstars in the U.S. So I picked up this CD and I'll be darned if I didn't become a convert after a few listens. This is incredibly catchy stuff. What makes it even cooler is Klaus Meine's heavily German-accented vocals. No chance you'll be able to duplicate that on Karaoke night.

1 out of 5 stars Hilarious, funniest CD ever !!!!!.......2006-12-06

From the juxtaposition in the title of "20th Century Masters" with "Best of Scorpions" , through each of the songs the laughs never end.

This is a perfect CD. If you are Beavis or Butthead you can rock out, if you have a brain you can laugh your a*s off at the indescribable suckitude of Scorpions.

Seriously though, I expected more from this CD given Germany's long history of extraordinary pop music.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of hit tracks for a new Scorpions fan .......2006-06-29

The Best of Scorpions: The Millenium Collection from the 20th Century Masters series is a great CD for those fans who want to get know what the Scorpions are all about. You can't really complain about the cost; the track list makes it definitely worth the price.

The 2 most commercially-successful albums "Love At First Sting" (Rock You Like A Hurricane, Big City Nights, Still Loving You) and "Crazy World" (Tease Me Please Me, Wind Of Change, Send Me An Angel) are well-represented here. Although, having 2 tracks from the sub-par "Savage Amusement" (Rhythym of Love, Believe In Love) and only 1 from the vastly-superior "Blackout" (No One Like You) is a joke.

If you want a decent selection of great songs from one of the better rock bands of the 80s and 90s but don't want to spend a lot of cash, get your hands on this disc. If you want a more complete collection of great Scorpions music and don't mind spending a little more, pick up the 3-disc "Box Of Scorpions" set instead of this.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD! .......2006-04-03

Scorpions. When it comes to heavy metal, very few bands did it better than Scorpions. And, this timeless CD of Scorpions makes their legacy larger than life. Read on for further details.

On this disc, as always you get the 24.bit remastering, meaning it's the best possible sound. And this is all the casual fan will need. I Can't Explain, Rock You Like A Hurricane and The Zoo are all here, and they all sound excellent.

There is not one bad thing I have to say about this disc. And, at 12 tracks, you get a mighty fine overview of Scorpions best. And if you want an excellent sampler for Scorpions, this the one to pick.

Overall this CD is highly recommended!

12 Tracks 57:24 total time~Universal entertainment-24.bit remastering. ENJOY!

Album Description

A best-of collection from one of Europe's most popular medieval bands. 13 tracks from 1993 to the 2003, including two live tracks and a CD-ROM video track of a live performance. Period pieces with a plethora of pipes, plenty of percussion, and an abundane of attitude.

3 out of 5 stars Mideval Metal.......2007-05-12

They bill themselfes as "the Rolling Stones of the Middle Ages", but they are more like Motley Crue. Definitely Celtic, but high-energy thrashing, not beautiful. You've gotta like it hard get into this. I own a couple of their albums and listen occasionaly. For something lighter, try "Faun".

5 out of 5 stars Puts you in the mood!.......2006-10-07

This "Best of" CD offers a nice sampling of Corvus Corax's music. It is an energetic jump into the Medieval or Reniassance period with some muscle. Men chanting...who aren't monks. I'll leave it at that.
There is also a good (live) version of "Saltarello" included.
If you are a fan of "Dead Can Dance" this music will be in like kind but on speed. If you don't know "Dead Can Dance", for Heaven's sake, go look them up!

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Sampling of Corvus Corax.......2006-06-01

Having followed this band's European success for more than a decade, I am thrilled that we finally have access to the music in the United States via Noir Records.

The essence: Corvus Corax are an example of the 'other side' of Medieval Music. These musicians are not concerned with courtly or noble odes to romanticized and faux Chivalry. They are bawdy, loud, and raw. Their live antics and energy surpasses most heavy metal acts without the contrivances associated with that genre.

They make their own costumes, design their own instruments, and have played with such reknown orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic. They are not simply a "Faire" band but in fact are complex and professional musicians. Not the tired piping ballads and frame drum repetition of so many bands claiming an ancient lineage - Corvus Corax is also keenly aware of the Hellenistic and Middle Eastern influences which helped form not only European music, but also touched European culture.

This CD is a perfect way to get a broad sampling of their diverse style. You will also hear many tracks on this disc which are popular at the live shows of Corvus Corax.

Even if you are like me, and own most of their discography, I recommend this CD. It is helpful to play for folks who see my T-Shirt or hear me mention the band, and ask, "What do they sound like?"

They sound like the markets, woods and hills of a time long past. They are testimony to the complexity and importance of music, arts, and the live venue not only today but also in misty antiquity.

5 out of 5 stars =) Stomp Along With These Medieval Minstrels! .......2006-05-23

About the Band:
Corvus Corax, whos name means raven, is a German medieval band formed in the late 1980s that is best known for their reliance on traditional instruments and interestingly enough appearance! Most of their songs feature extensive bagpipe and drums. Considering themselves street minstrels of old, Corvus Corax are known to make secret unannounced appearances at European music festivals such as Germany's annual Wave-Gotik-Treffen, where they have always been a fan favorite.

About the Album:
This is a best of album, and as such it really is the best way to introduce people not only to Corvus Corax, but also the medieval genre of music. Though popular in gothic and industrial music scenes in which electronic music is usually a staple, this album focuses on traditional instruments and vox. Fans of folk and medieval (think Renaissance Faire) music or general fantasy atmospheres will love this album.

Recommended Tracks:
- Avanti
- Ballade de Mercy
- Douce Dame Joliet
- Mille Anni Passi Sunt
- Filii Neidhardi

One note on the Ballade de Mercy ... though the song is "work-safe" in the United States due to language barrier issues, the old French lyrics are not only silly, but a bit risqué (in an extremely good way, I assure you - I can't help but laugh and sing along).

I've bought this album twice from amazon! The first time for myself, and the second time for a friend of mine who tends to listen to 80s pop music and Spanish music. She loved this album, and normally she finds my taste in music to be too "dark". Corvus Corax are not dark, but just pure fun. I honestly think anybody who enjoys the "feel-good" that accompanies fast paced festival music will instantly fall in love with Corvus Corax.

For years they were a European secret, but within a year of performing in Pennsylvania (2005), more of their albums are starting to make their way to North America. Similarly, they are now being talked about more at clubs. This album will illustrate the growing interest in this bad. I honestly have a hard time not wanting to smile, stomp, and dance any time I hear these crazy minstrels.

I was forunate to see Corvus Corax appear at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair, earlier this year. I really enjoyed their performance. Sometimes live music is more enchanting than listening to a CD in your car. That is NOT the case with this CD. It is absolutely captivating. I love the medieval flavor of this music. The vocals are used as an instrument in and of themselves, too. The music of Corvus Corax is timeless! It will be just a wonderful, 10 years down the line. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Get it for the live disc.......2006-09-11

Disc 1 of this compilation is a pretty good introduction to the band, though you have to wonder at some of the choices. Unsurprisingly, all five singles from "Sixteen Stone" are included, as are "The Science of Things"' three singles. I guess the compilers aren't fans of "Razorblade Suitcase," because it's represented by a paltry two songs even though the album spawned five singles. The poorly received remix album "Deconstructed" wins three slots-- space which would have been better used for album tracks like "Alien" or "Mindchanger," or the missing "Razorblade Suitcase" singles.

The draw here for existing Bush fans is the band's Woodstock '99 performance captured on disc 2. It's a great set and Gavin is in good voice throughout, though the rest of the band sometimes gets drowned out by the screaming crowd. The highlight is probably a cover of R.E.M.'s "The One I Love."

All in all, this package is a nice souvenir of the band's first five years, but it could have been a lot more comprehensive.

4 out of 5 stars If Only it was..........2006-02-03

If this CD was packed with "Zen x 4" then we'd be set. a DVD & a cd companion of their singles. Better to call it a "singles colelction" rather than "hits" when we all know some of bushs best stuff wasnt released on radio or MTV. Still, this cd is badass & if you want "hits" you HAVE to order this because of course, Zen x 4 is a damn DVD that comes with a lousy additional cd. if i want hits, i want to hear the studio versions, not live (unless its relased as a live track) & i LISTEN more than I WATCH so of course this gets a better rating than zen x 4. just remember than THIS is a CD & Zen is a DVD. they fool you by putting zen in the cd section. go & import this if you have a Bush craving :)

5 out of 5 stars Such a great band..........2006-01-16

Sometimes you forget how great a band is that you used to love and then when you find the highlights of their career on one cd... along with a few extra goodies... its just so wonderful! I honestly can't say enough good things about this cd! If you love Bush... or ever liked any of their songs... you should pick this up because you won't be disappointed! :)

3 out of 5 stars Could have been a lot better.......2005-10-20

I would barely call this record "The Best of Bush 94-99". I must say that I consider this title a mistake. Don't get me wrong, the songs included in this album are great and Bush is in my opinion one of the greatest bands of the 90's. But, this one leaves tons of Bush in the air.
First of all, in a 13 song record, I consider unfair to give 6 songs to Sixteen Stone and 4 to Razorblade Suitcase. Also, Swallowed and Everything Zen comes twice in a mix version. So where did they leave songs like Cold Contagious or Alien?
Despite that this album has great songs, I thinks it's a bad compilation if you really want to know the best of Bush. So, if you are buying this to get a general idea of what this Band is, I would recommend you to buy first Sixteen Stone, then Golden State and after that you choose, Razorblade Suitcase or The Science of Things.
The 3 stars are because of the bad compilation, despite the great songs included.

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Hits From One of The 90's Most Popular Bands........2005-10-11

Say what you will about Bush, there is no doubt this was one of the most popular bands of the mid to late 90's. In fact the band still has a strong following, "Everything Zen" is still a track that gets lots of airplay on rock radio and this Best Of set is a reminder of the days when Gavin Rossdale was famous for things other than just being Gwen Stefani's husband. The truth is Bush was a good band, sure they sounded a lot like Nirvana at times, but for a while who didn't during the grunge explosion? And even then, this band still has its own unique sound and style. The playing was real tight and Rossdale was a skilled vocalist, even with his trippy lyrics that feel like Arthur Rimbaud meets Stanley Kubrick with a dash of Jim Morrison. Like the more superior Stone Temple Pilots, Bush was one of those bands bashed by a few hack writers but embraced by the public who vindicated them and made them vital. Sometimes the people can see what the critics can't. For example, "Everything Zen" doesn't sound like Nirvana at all, it sounds more like a trip into the future, almost like what grunge should sound like...in the year 2089. The song is still an exhilarating ride with Nigel Pulsford's stirring slide guitar and Rossdale's urgent vocals. "Warm Machine" is crowd friendly rock with a poppy chorus, but it's good corn, like "Little Things" which will take you back to high school in the 90's instantly. "Machinehead" is pure, ripping hard rock with slick production. "The Chemicals Between Us" is a look at what Bush was attempting at the close of the decade when Rossdale expressed a desire to experiment with electronica. You could say there are a few techno touches, but in reality the band flourished with the album "The Science Of Things" in terms of melody. As a bonus this set comes with a live CD featuring the band's "Woodstock '99" performance. It's a good look at how the band was strong live, probably more than on record. Their playing shines and the best moment is when they cover R.E.M.'s "The One I Love," it's done with style and feeling, turning it into an edgier, darker expression. "The Best Of '94-'99" is a worthy set for the casual listener who wants the hits and doesn't feel like purchasing all the Bush albums. But it is also a look back at the band and the trashers might be able to begin and see the actual talent present in these recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome music.......2006-09-13

If you like the Scorpions you can't go wrong with this CD. Excellent selection of all my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Pre Wind of Change Best of.......2006-08-30

This disc got a fair bit of push at the time but when it was released prior their biggest international hit (Wind of Change) the validity of this '89 release comes into question for the latter day convert. No arguing with the tracks that are on the disc though. Have a squiz at the track listing and you'll see the quality. Rock You Like A Hurrican, Rhythm of Love, Big City Nights and Lovedrive all do the job as does their cover song Can't Explain which was also the bands contribution to the Stairway To Heaven, Highway to Hell compilation album. Some of the ballads don't work for me personally but a number of them were hits in certain territories like Still Loving You and No One Like You. The title gives fair warning, for every You Give Me All I Need ther is a rocker like Blackout and Another Piece of Meat.

I always get a good feeling about this album but that's probably because I bought it while on holiday in Switzerland so perhaps the good vibes of my trip are colouring my judgement a bit. But for me this is a four star release due to it's judicious blend of metal (Blackout/Another Piece of Meat), hard rock (Rock You Like A Hurricane), generic rock 'n' roll (Can't Explain) and ballads (No On Like You etc). But there are later and far more exhaustive best of packages out there nowadays, so despite the quality tunes this is a package of limited value for buyers today. Still, top wattage.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great CD!.......2006-08-26

Not sure why people are bashing this CD because it's one of my absolute favorite CD's of all time. My first Scorps purchase was "The Zoo" on a 45. For you youngens, that's a single song on a vinyl disk that's played on a record player. Good luck finding any of these anymore! I upgraded from my 45 version of The Zoo to the full-blown LP. I had to save up my pennies to get this expensive album when it came out and then figure out how to record it onto a cassette. What can I say, I was a kid and I was broke. For those that don't know what an album is, it's also a vinyl disk but this baby ran at 33 revolutions per second and had better quality sound than the 45 and even had a bunch more songs like a CD does today. The cassette was a miracle product that came on the market shortly after those wonderful 8 track players came into full swing. Ah, I miss the days of seeing an 8-track tape fluttering in the breeze after someone threw the tape out his or her car window at 65 mph because the darn thing got stuck in the player for the last time. Those were the days all right. Speaking of CD's, when these little beauties came on the scene, I had the money and went straight out and bought this CD right after buying my first CD player. At that time you couldn't record to a CD like you can today. Did I mention I didn't stop there? I had to go out and get the DVD's as well and how about that mp3 file in my cell phone? Anyway, I've played these songs through most of my adult life. On the CD version I played the laser dots off the disk. Did I mention I'm loosing my hearing from playing Scorps rock tunes like Still Loving You at full volume on a Boze system that really cranks? But wait, there's more. I love the songs on this album, oops, I mean CD, so much that I couldn't just listen to them anymore. I wanted to learn how to play them myself so I went to the local Guitar Center Store and spent a little more coin on a new $1000 guitar and $900 Marshall amp. Sorry Amazon, you weren't even a twinkle in someone's eye back in those days. After doing this I learned just how talented the Scorps are and admired their talent even more. The Scorpions are master musicians and the reviewers are right, this CD doesn't have all the Scorp songs but it's the CD you must have if you love the Scorps. The songs on this CD are the ones the Scorps are known for and I wouldn't trade this CD for anything. They'll have to pry this CD out of my cold dead hands after I die!

4 out of 5 stars Missing Some Songs, But Still A Great Scorps CD!!!.......2004-02-27

This album is missing a couple good songs, like Send Me An Angel, And Loving Sunday Morning. But a good CD nonetheless...
Here's my 2 Cents:

Rock You Like A Hurricane - A Scorps Classic!!! It'll make you wanna' stand up and shout!!! Very electrifying. 5/5

I Can't Explain - Simular to Blackout. Sounds like somthing you'd hear from Judas Priest. 4.75/5

Still Loving You - A slow ballad. Very sullen. MAkes you want to break down and cry. *sniff* 5/5

Big City Nights - It's like Rock You Like A Hurricane pt. 2. They both have that great neon Jaming feeling. 5/5

Lovedrive - Not a weak song... Just sounds like somthing you'd hear from Loverboy *Blaughh* 3.75/5

Holiday - My friend DJ's favorite Scorps song EVER. I love the intro and overall statistics of the song. 5/5

Blackout - An up-and-go-go feeling song! Good chorus. 5/5

Rhythem Of Love - A sweet love ballad. The Scorps make love ballads so NOT sickeningly sweet. There all just so damn powerful!!! 5/5

No One Like You - MY FAVORITE SCORPIONS SONG EVER!!! The chords are very Jamin'. 6/5

You Give Me All I Need - Awsome... Need I say more? 5/5

Hey You - My least favorite on the CD. Still good though. 3.5/5

The Zoo - Great pick for an outro, one of the Scorps best! 5/5

In Conclusion... Get it if you are into Old School, like Judas Priest, Ozzy, Dio, and all that. If your into nu-metal, This may be too old for your tastes. Personally I love it!!!

3 out of 5 stars Too much missing to be taken seriously.......2003-08-05

Tying with Roger Daltrey for the worst album title of all time, it's hard to imagine that this is what the powers that be saw as a Scorpions best of collection. To begin with, the disc leans too heavily on the later years, which admittedly are the bread and butter of the record company, but not at all representative of what a force the Scorps were in the late '70's/early '80's. From where I stand, start with Animal Magnetism and Blackout, then slip in the occasional mid to late '80's cookie cutters. True, there were some decent songs on the late '80's albums, but to get a real taste for the band, much of the early stuff is essential. Average at best, but an okay place for the casual fan to start.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2006-11-08

These 14 tracks encompass some of Nina Hagen's timeless songs but they do not represent her best by any means. The best tracks here are TV Glotzer (White Punks On Dope, originally by The Tubes), African Reggae, her German version of Lene Lovich's Lucky Number which is titled Wir Leben Immer Noch and her interpretation of Norman Greenbaum's gospel song Spirit In The Sky. These capture the essence of the early Nina Hagen from the first two albums Nina Hagen Band and Unbehagen.

Other memorable tracks are New York New York, Universal Radio and her weird take on My Way. The song Zarah appears in three different mixes: the original, the dance mix and the dub. The CD booklet offers informative liner notes, photographs and info on the songs. Her early music was original and exceptional, an inspired blend of rock, punk and operatic vocals, whilst the later stuff became a little formulaic or did not live up to the high standard of the first two albums.

There are two other compilations that offer more of the early innovative songs like Naturtraene, Unbeschreiblich Weiblich, Auf'm Bahnhof Zoo and Heiss. These are the Definitive Collection and Very Best Of. But this one, 14 Friendly Abductions is a great introduction for the casual fan. Nina Hagen is an exceptional vocalist who made some of the most intriguing music of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

5 out of 5 stars A 74:14 minute smile.......2006-11-03

Not for every one Cd, and people who don't know what's ahead might get frightened (see some former reviews), but if you are open minded and like energetic punk-rock music, than you wont stop smiling. Nina is an excellent performer and her music is a complex although melodic. I enjoy listening even tough the German language is the worst, but with NH serving it doesn't matter (still, a few tracks are in English).
this CD is a good place to start knowing Nina Hagen great voice, every track is a pleasure. the only bad thing about it is that you'll end up wanting more of her.

5 out of 5 stars COSMA INFINITE NINA.......2006-03-11

A great listen if you're in the mood for punk rock, high energetic music. And Nina truly delivers! I enjoy this when I just want to get down and get damn crazy in my apartment. My personal favorites are "Zarah";starts off with a slow cabaret style vocal ala MARLENE DIETRICH, but really a tribute to 1930's german singer ZARAH LENDER, which progresses into GIORGIO MORODER'S frenetic dance beats;"COSMA SHIVA" which has a nice groove, yet ethereal and outworldly sounding. Cosma Shiva by the way is the name of her daughter. Other tracks that are noteworthy are AFRICAN REGGAE, SPIRIT IN THE SKY, WHITE PUNKS ON DOPE(don't know the german title off hand), UNIVERSAL RADIO and NEW YORK,NEW YORK.

4 out of 5 stars Still really delicious!.......2005-10-22

I'm a huge Nina fan, and I don't speak a word of German. That ought to tell you something right there.

I picked up this disc purely because "My Sensation" is one of those tracks you develop an addiction to, and absolutely have to hear repeatedly or you run a substantial risk of spontaneously combusting (or something to that effect). Just give this song one listen and you'll be amazed... then try dancing to it. Blissful. It's pure fun from beginning to end, and it's one of the few tracks by any artist that I never get tired of.

Unfortunately, this song turned out to still be my favorite track by the end. Didn't really discover anything new here. "Universal Radio" is a keeper, and definitely worth a listen. But some stuff ("New York, New York", for example) that I was never wildly fond of in German gets even less pleasant in English. Nina's English isn't nearly as natural as her German, and I really think you miss out on a lot of her charm.

So all in all? This disc gets its fair share of time coarsing through my speakers, but I very seldom listen to the whole record through. I'm glad I bought it, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as an intro to The Mother of Punk. Shop around a little more, perhaps. Take a little time to enjoy Nina's work with an open mind and I really think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

2 out of 5 stars The Original Freakazoid.......2005-10-04

I just had to chime in because I ALMOST put down my loose change for a Nina compilation, I'm always a sucker for all these 5 star Amazon reviews and I had heard of her growing up in NYC in the late 70's-81. But thank God, Amazon also has the tracks to sample because I now remember how Nina was never played at the clubs I would go to unless maybe it was freak night, or I guess this would play well at an S&M club. I was just thinking if they used her music in the movie Eurotrip when the dude is in Amsterdam and the hot S&M dominatrix ties him down and all the muscle bound dudes pop out and you know what happens next, lol. Nina had to have been the music for a scene like that. I'm not against "weird" stuff, or German stuff (I own Lene Lovich, and Kraftwerk), I'm just not into music that is weird for the sake of being weird unless it sounds good. Not trying to put down Nina, she obviously has her fans; I'm just posting this for people new to her stuff so they get a little balance, definitely listen to the samples first to see if this is for you.

This collection of German standards is so determinedly lighthearted you could go snow-blind just listening to it. Disc 1 wanders from brass band music with a cheery chorus to a pop-friendly combo armed with electronic keyboards and what sounds suspiciously like a drum machine. "Kornblumenblau" gets a reverential glee club treatment, while "Heute Blau und Morgen Blau" erupts with ersatz yodels that are as close as this set gets to Alpine vocal antics. The Mexican ay-yi-yi-ing on the calypso-flavored "Nach Hause Geh'n Wir Nicht" shows how far such collections have come from the days of "The Happy Wanderer," though the unnamed musicians toss that ditty in as well. Disc 2 ups the oompah-band quotient a couple of notches, putting a head on the lusty singing guaranteed to put the gemütlichkeit into your own private Oktoberfest. --Bob Tarte

1 out of 5 stars Warning- Songs on "Disc 2" not on CD !!!.......2007-06-22

I actually bought this CD for those exact songs(to replace a worn out cassette). Regrettably, they aren't on this CD! The discription and the music samples are wrong.

There are, at the very least, two problems with the discription.

First, What Amazon calls "Disc 1" is really Disc 2.

Second, What Amazon calls "Disc 2" is not from this CD. The discription AND music samples you hear are from this CD...Best of Germany.

It looks like the discription provided by the manufacturer is wrong for this CD as I've seen the same discription all over the internet. So if you buy this looking for specific songs, you'll probably be disappointed.

By the way , I have the cassette version of Best of Germany and it is awesome! It features Heino amongst others.

1 out of 5 stars I am very disappointed.......2006-12-14

This is a collection of fine old German songs, cut in mid-verse sometimes like someone would switch stations on a push-button radio. I've heard all the song as a young man stationed in Germany during the cold war, and bring back memories. I wish the package was more honestly represented.

3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2006-11-02

This is a two CD set of German drinking and merrymaking music that comes in an attractive cardboard sleeve. Both CD's feature a mixed chorus ably accompanied by a traditional German oom-pah band. The main difference between the two CD's is the presence in disc 1 of partygoers who applaud, cheer, and make all manner of extraneous noise. To me, that spoiled the presentation. It sounded too much like a drunken bar scene. Disc 2, on the other hand, would make really great background music for any German theme party, including Oktoberfest. In my opinion, this set is worth buying just for disc 2.

2 out of 5 stars Songs indicated are not the same songs on the CD........2006-08-24

While some of the songs are great, the CD does not contain several of the songs listed which include some of the reasons I purchased this CD. I am surprised that there is not a quality check prior to offering the CD for sale.

2 out of 5 stars Not what it's supposed to be!.......2005-07-22

Yup, the first cd is not what is listed on the website, which is too bad, because some of those songs are great. Especially Schone Maid and Amboss Polka, they rock. I'm keeping the cd because they were gonna charge me for the shipping, so the heck with it. I now have some more background music for working in my shop or at my own little bier fests!

5 out of 5 stars "Two classics in one package".......2005-09-02

These are Marley Marl's classic compilations "IN CONTROL", vol.1 & 2 from '88 and '91. Some of the best of the "COLD CHILLIN'" recordings are here. Two classics for the price of one! DOPE!!

5 out of 5 stars LIVE AND DIRECT FROM THE HOUSE OF HITS!!!!!.......2002-05-28

Any TRUE hip-hop fan of yesteryear knows that THE HOUSE OF HITS was the name for Marley Marl's studio. The new installment from "THE BEST OF COLD CHILLIN'" series is a long time coming. Some may disagree with the rating of 5 stars, but I'm giving it the 5 star rating mostly on the strength of the first installment "IN CONTROL VOLUME 1". Even though many magazines often overlook this album, when it was released in 1988, it was considered a classic. With classic songs like "THE SYMPHONY"(the FIRST posse song and arguably the best in hip hop history), "DROPPIN' SCIENCE", and "FREEDOM", how can you go wrong? This album also contains the underground late 88-89 mix show classics "WE WRITE THE SONGS" (featuring Biz Markie and Heavy D. in what has to truly be considered one of the Hevster's BEST lyrical outings EVER as they trade verses back and forth), "DUCK ALERT", and "LIVE MOTIVATOR". The second disc is "IN CONTROL VOLUME 2:FOR YOUR STEERING PLEASURE" which Marley recently admitted that he did just to fulfill his contract obligation with Cold Chillin'. The album isn't a TOTAL dud. There are some bright moments like "THE SYMPHONY PT. 2" (which can't hold a CANDLE to the original...but is decent nonetheless), "I BE GETTIN'BUSY" (LL COOL J), and "AMERICA EATS THE YOUNG" (featuring CHUCK D. and TRAGEDY when he was the INTELLIGENT HOODLUM and before he just totally thugged out and became TRAGEDY KHADAFI). Pick this double cd up if you want to hear some classic material AND a producer that greatly influenced many hip-hop producers from PETE ROCK(who Marley tutored)to DJ PREMIER. Along with 45 KING no one producer held it down as well as MARLEY MARL....the true QUINCY JONES/GODFATHER of hip hop producers....

PEACE AND LOVE
