4 out of 5 stars Big I'land Boiz from Kohala make big music in debut CD........2005-11-16

The I'land Boiz, a group of seven talented Hawaiian musicians, do everything here--sing, play a variety of instruments, and write most of their own music in this terrific CD. Talented Billy Rodrigues directs traffic throughout the album, as he is lead vocalist, soloing on most of the tracks after having composed seven of the songs. His exceptionally clear, strong voice and outstanding enunciation make every word understandable, even when he is singing at high speed, and his ability to handle even the Hawaiian falsetto on "E Huli" attests to his versatility.

The group is joined by several guests--famed slack key guitarist John Keawe on "E Huli" and "Kapua E"; Dwayne Higa on Hammond Organ, which is especially noticeable on "Holy Holy," a soft Gospel-type song; Pierre Grill on acoustic piano, which gives an interesting, "professional" sound to "Island Babe,' which was written by I'land Boiz Edwin Valenzuela and Stephen Kishimoto; and Kid Leo, a popular local DJ, who appears briefly on "Katchi Katchi Reggae."

Three singers--Gilbert Osaki, Edwin Valenzuela, and Jason Feliciano--sing backup to Rodrigues throughout, combining with gorgeous harmonies and an almost "barbershop quartet" sound, though their rhythms and styles are pure Hawaiian (laced with Caribbean, at times). Patrick Lucas's lead electric guitar riffs add pizzazz to several songs, and with Ira Shigaki and Derek Higa both playing bass and keyboards, the group has a big sound which is emphasized by the drums of Osaki and Feliciano.

It is hard to choose favorites, but I have several. "Life Would Be So Easy," a song by Rodrigues, has the flavor of a protest song as he sings for peace, and it is musically interesting, with changing rhythms, variations in the drum beat, and some creative instrumental solos near the end. "Katchi Katchi Reggae," full of Caribbean beat and great rhythm, and "One Time Love," another with Caribbean rhythms, are full of energy. "Feel So Fine," the fastest song on the CD has a terrific rap flavor. The I'land Boiz are local Big Island favorites whose sounds have captivated this haole kama'aina, and they deserve to find a wider audience. Mary Whipple

4 out of 5 stars Island Boyz give taste to "Kohala Style" with music.......2003-01-16

I had the cassette of this album and it finally wore-out. I really love this album and wish the boys had produced more. This album gives you the feeling of what "Kohala Style" is all about. I was in middle school when "Special Love" was very popular so listening to this album takes me back to memories... "Katchi Katchi Regae" is a fun song... all the songs are great! Usually I never pay above $15 for a CD, but this one is well-worth the investment.
