2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-27

With all of the talent involved with this project, this CD should have been much better. Let's see how the next one is. Skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars this band has arrived.......2007-05-09

Pride of Lions has been getting great reviews since their debut, but I always thought they were over-rated. I thought the songs lacked a little punch and direction and that Toby Hitchcock, their already-legendary vocalist, despite his great set of pipes, needed a great deal more seasoning and better control.

Those complaints are gone. This, the third full-length album by Pride of Lions, delivers on this band's potential at last.

The songs, by Jim Peterik of Survivor fame, are much better than the old Survivor material, which was sappy and over-commercial most of the time. This stuff is far more mature; it uses the AOR pop-song template as a vehicle to express Peterik's spiritual yearnings, which are always positive and uplifting in nature. And no voice could capture this vision like Hitchcock's does here, as he has grown by leaps and bounds as a singer since the last album. It isn't anything technical, merely a newfound confidence in his emotional projection.

There are a couple of clankers on here, but they don't diminish this one enough to cause it to drop beneath the five stars I am giving it. Highly recommended to AOR/keyboardy hard rock fans.

5 out of 5 stars Survivor Fan's Essential For Sure.......2007-03-22

After enjoying Journey's GENERATIONS, Toto's FALLING IN BETWEEN, and SURVIVOR's comeback album REACH or Chicago return album with XXX, maybe Pride of Lion's third album is the next for you to listen.

Pride of Lions is a duo made up of ex-Survivor rock legend JIM PETERIK and young turk TOBY HITCHCOCK. Toby's amazing voice range made it possible for Jim Peterik to play the game again as passionate as when he was in Survivor and rock masterpieces followed in 2003 and 2004.

My first pick from the album is LANGUAGE OF THE HEART uptempo drivethrough pop rock song somewhat like movie theme songs by Kenny Loggins. During Survivor days uptempo songs are quite rare and most songs are in mid-tempo. Yet with Toby Hitchcock leading the vocal the duo could force out a bunch of up-tempo rockers the most impressive of which is BORN TO BELIEVE IN YOU from the previous album The Destiny Stone. Ballads are quite moving as well just take a few example from this album, LOVE'S ETERNAL HEART, and FAITHFUL HEART. And see-breeze light pop like SECRET OF THE WAY who may capture the heart of late 70s AOR fans who love AMBROSIA or SUPERTRAMP. And ASTONISH YOU stabilizes the soft appeal of the band. And that never betrays the avid melodic rock fans who love HOUSE OF LORDS or SUNSTORM albums. Top track HEAVEN ON EARTH just sap the current melodic rock scene.

Only listners who might get a bit bored might be the fans of previous two albums because this album is more like the summarization of the two rather than moving into the next adventure. 12th track TURNAROUND gives you a few surprises. A new talent, sister of Toby Hitchcock is revealed. She may well be melodic rock version of AMY LEE? A bright hope for the band.

Verdict: Mixes the element of previous two albums. Nothing new to old fans.
Rating: 91 out of 100
Recommnded for: Most suited for 80s rock fans who might have lost touch with the music they love most. Survivor and general 80s pop and rock fans.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Awesome debut from an old master.......2006-06-14

Super AOR CD from ex Survivor front man Jim Peterik. Worth the price alone for the beautiful power ballads Last safe place (written after Sept.11) and the brilliant Interupted melody. There are good rockers here too and lead singer Toby Hitchcock has quite an impressive vocal range. A couple of filler tracks which are listenable but not brilliant, but overall 4 out of 5 sums this up. These guys should be a major hit if the radio execs had half a brain and got behind quality songwriting, production, musicianship and vocals. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!! your ears won't believe....!!!.......2004-02-28

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt and true melodic rock.......2004-02-17

This is an absolutely gorgeous yet rocking melodic rock album. This project is the latest in a line of great Jim Peterik works from the past few years--following such stellar acts as World Stage and Mecca. Once again, Mr. Peterik has shown why he is such a stellar musician and songwriter.

With young newcomer vocalist Toby Hitchcock, these songs are carried off beautifully. My one disclaimer giving my overall grade about 4 3/4 stars compared to a full 5 stars is that some of the material really doesn't break any ground--sounding just like Peterik's Survivor in their prime in the 1980s. That being said, surely Survivor is a great act to emulate if you're looking to make stellar melodic rock. The lead track "It's Criminal", in fact, has roots from Survivor Vital Signs era recording sessions--clearly apparent with the classic melodic rock uptempo sound of this song.

These songs both rock and tug at your heart strings. Take the second track "Gone", with it's powerful anthemic quality yet a message about a lover who has left. "Sound Of Home" is a mid-tempo melodic masterpiece with an unforgetable chorus. "Prideland" is a gorgeous slower track, while "Turn To Me" again sounds like classic uptempo Survivor from the Vital Signs era.

Let me be clear: this album does not have modern rock influences on it anywhere. It is simply more brilliant songwriting and music from a man who significantly influenced an entire genre of rock music. It sounds like a blast from the past and yet also has a new, mature edge to it. Every track has a memorable hook and melody to it. Highly recommended for Survivor fans in particular and many melodic rock fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Amazing Jim Peterik strikes again!!.......2003-12-15

What can I say? If you were into Jim's great songwriting skills in Survivor ( not to mention all the great tunes he's penned for other artists), then you should grab this new project IMMEDIATELY!! It's fantastic and..it ROCKS! This is fantastic melodic pop/rock with some killer guitar work. There is a definate Survivor/Toto vibe to this cd. So if you like those bands-GET THIS NOW! The new singer (Toby Hitchcock) has an incredible voice that sounds alot like Mickey Thomas (Starship),Bobby Kimball(Toto),and maybe a bit of Brad Delp(Boston). And Mr. Peterik is in fine voice here,too-trading off and/or dueting with Hitchcock on some songs.Reminds you a bit of those old Journey songs with Greg Rolie trading off with Steve Perry. All in all..Just a STELLAR disc!! ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars wow, what an album.......2003-12-05

I never give 5 stars unless the material is extremely good.

With "Pride of Lions", you will enjoy every piece of it, great songs that remind me of the melodic rock of the 80's, but the good thing is that the sound is fresh!, and you will hear a great vocalist (what a vocalist, wow!).

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The Honor To Be One of the Greatest European Rock Event.......2006-06-17

Where the hell is Jim Peterik? Well at least he has been out of Survivor since 1996. He left the band to have more freedom for the range of music. Now he is one of the busiest man in AOR field. He not only co-writes a number of great songs with some of the greatest talents in rock field such as John Lynn Turner, Kevin Chalfant, Kelly Keagy, Mick Jones, Don Barnes, Kevin Cronin, Jack Blades, and so on. but he tours with Ides of March members, occasionally reunites 80s rivals for World Stage concerts. And he now have duo project of his own Pride of Lions which already put out two masterpiece albums. In August 2005, Pride of Lions featuring young turk Toby Hitchcock was invited to Belgium for Lokersee Feesten rock festival well-known annual rock events attracting more than 20,000 people one night. As the opening introduction shows POl was invited hugely because for honoring the legend of Survivor Jim Peterik and future rock star Toby Hitchcock. And the audience with the exception of avid fans carrying Pride of Lions banner were lured probably because they heard Survivor hit songs would come alive...

Disc 1: Live In Belgium
Music fans at the festivals are really fortunate to have some of the greatest past and present songs one night. Three Survivor hits THE SEARCH IS OVER, I CAN'T HOLD BACK, and EYE OF THE TIGER were played that night. Particularly Search Is Over became really current and modern and even female voice can sing it. I Can't Hold Back also were differently arranged but it was well done, too. By inserting Survivor hits it proved how POL songs were excellent even comparing with past hits. Yep. It is songs like MUSIC AND ME, SOUND OF HOME, and THE GIFT OF SONG that we miss about present Survivor.

Disc2: Unreleased Studio and Live material
Before buying this live album, be sure to check which version European or Japanese you are going to get. Because there are huge differences in tracks included.

JAPANESE VERSION
1 Dark Angel
2 Black Ribbons(Voice of the World)
3 Feels Like Another Planet
4 Gone(live)
5 I Can't Hold Back(live)

EUROPEAN VERSION
1 Reckless Love
2 Stand By You
3 So Deadly
4 Surrender to the Night
5 Dark Angel
6 Black Ribbons(Voice Of the World)
7 Feels Like Another Planet

Verdict: I wish I were there...
Rating: 80 out of 100. Toby and Jim could live up to the legend and the audience's expectation. But personally I would rather see it on DVD.
Recommeded for: Survivor fans and Jim Peterik and Pride of Lions fans.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A super CD that takes a few listens.......2006-06-14

Initially I was disappointed by this second effort from Pride of Lions. However, after several listens the cd grew on me. Whilst there are no unbelievable power ballads like their first CD, Light from a distant shore is excellent. As for the rest of the material on this CD, I would say that if you are a fan of Journey, Toto,or Styx, you really should add this Cd to your collection. Singer Toby Hitchcock has an unbelievable range and could easily be mistaken for both Dennis De Young or Tommy Shaw. (hard to believe but true)
The courage to love somebody and Parallel Lines are awseome. Born to believe in you is an excellent rocker, while Man behind the mask sounds like Dennis de young and the song is eerily familiar - Mr. Roboto. Second hand life and falling back to then make the album complete.
The filler tracks Back to Camelot and Gift of song are listenable but not unforgettable - mind you the lead singer in Gift of song shows off his range here and listen out for an Alan Parsons like bridge in the middle of the song.
All in all a worthy CD in any collection

4 out of 5 stars The `eye of the tiger' is alive and well.......2005-01-25

The Good
The production on "The Courage to Love Somebody" is just phenomenal. Granted it could be mistaken for a long-lost Survivor track, but they just something about the guitar tone and the synthesizers that make it work. The vocals send a strong message of love with their powerful delivery. "Parallel Lines" to easily pass as the soundtrack to an emotionally charged movie climax with its driving rhythms and over-the-top chorus. Peterik's flair for the keyboard takes center stage on "Born to Believe in You". Toby and Jim pull off a great duel vocal melody on the chorus. What kind of fool relies a lot on the keyboard as well, but this time around it's for power ballad. There's a very 1980s-esque solo that goes along with it.

Pride of Lions seem to excel in the ballad department, which is evident on "Light from a Distant Shore". Little guitar licks here and there add depth to the song. "Letter to the Future" walks a fine line between melodic rock and an Andrew Lloyd Webber production. The song begins slow and understated, but finishes with all pistons firing. A catchy muted riff dominates "Falling Back to Then". On the verses the vocals seem a little darker and deeper, but that makes way for a high-registered melodic assault. I wanted to note that Pride of Lions don't skimp on material. There's no song shorter than four minutes, with most tracks clocking in between five and six minutes.

The Bad
It's not quite clear who's singing what.

The Verdict
The `eye of the tiger' is alive and well, now traveling with a Pride of Lions. The Destiny Stone truly is the best of 80s-era melodic rock with a modern twist. Each song is powerful and sure to bring out every emotion possible. The guitar tone and heavy use of keyboards is what will reel you in. A nice slice of what's missing in American rock today.

5 out of 5 stars The Odd Duo Worked Another Wonder!.......2005-01-16

How can the duo made up by rock veteran Jim Peterik known as great songs by Survivor, 38 Special and a lot more and 25-year-old bud Toby Hitchcock work? It is truly unprecedented combination. Yep similar things are tried in Santana's SUPERNATURAL album when the rock legend Carlos Santana made great combination with Rob Thomas young talented rocker of Matchbox Twenty. With Pride of Lions debut two years ago and
this one just released, Jim Peterik competes fairly well with talented new singer Toby Hitchcock having strong vocal the rock world has been waiting for. Before Survivor Jim did sing during Ides of March and latter-day Chase. But after finding great singer Dave Vickler he was content with background role concentrating on songwriting. For most of Survivor and 80's rock fans Jim Peterik taking co-lead vocalist role is quite fresh somewhat like meeting a new singer. Not only uncovering his great talent as vocalist but his songwriting shown in this album is better than ever. All the track included are well-written and well-hooked. Among the great songs I would pick LIGHT FROM DISTANT SHORE, BORN TO BELIEVE IN YOU, and MAN BEHIND THE MASK as my top favorites.

Must-have album if you are a rock connoisseur.
