A treasure of the musical world........2007-04-14
I was first introduced to Miss Russell in 1980 by fellow musicians in Rochester NY. We spent late nights after rehearsals secretly listening and laughing ourselves sick. She had the ability to put us and our conductor in our places and made us like it! Miss Russell clearly understood opera, live concert events, touring and all aspects of the music of the world. Parts of this album were recorded in New York City USA and parts in Johannesburg South Africa. It makes no difference where the audience is, the language and experience is universal and we all laugh together. Undressed bagpipes, ears turning into gardenias, the lament for the fat ladies, and "Jolly Old Sigmund Freud" presented in the singular voice of a "ruined opera singer" are irresistible.
The best comment about this album came from my seventeen year old son. Just last year (2006) I finally got a CD copy of this priceless work of art and shared it with him. He listened totally enthralled. The selection "Hamletto, or Prosciuttino (sung in simultaneous Italian and English0" caused him to comment, "Well, now I know what Hamlet is about." He since asked me to get the others and has loved them as well. "Backwards With the Folk Song" brought back memories of Voice Lessons and dreary concerts that now can be enjoyed safely from a distance. Today's indie and emo musicians could do well to listen and learn.
I would recommend Miss Russell's work for any teenaged class, they seem to adore her sly wit. Besides, all the French Horn players in the High School band need a little teasing from time to time.
A classic above all classics.......2000-03-17
From the velvet-voiced music reviewer herself, Anna Russell has laid many a sour note. This in itself, is what makes her so funny. She takes greater pains to sound bad as most other singers do to sound good. And the best thing about this, and all of her recordings in general is that you will never tire of them, no matter how much you play them... From those before her or after her in the musica funnia farma (P.D.Q. Bach, Victor Borge, Florence Foster Jenkins, etc.), it is in this venue of music appreciation (or as some say, depreciation), that will bring newer fans to the classical arena...
Funny and scathingly true.......1999-10-29
Highly recomended listening for the serious classical music enthusiast who enjoys a good laugh!
Hilarious - move over Victor Borge & Beatrice Lily.......1999-03-15
Anyone who loves classical music, Victor Borge, Flanders & Swann , Beatrice Lily, or PDQ Bach will love this album, play it over and over, and quote her to friends.

My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06
Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.
The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.
--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.
On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.
The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
music of great beauty.......2005-04-24
Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?
Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28
This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.
Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20
This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-15
A Catholic in Protestant England of Queen Elizabeth had to be careful to keep his head, in every sense of the word. Wm Byrd (1543-1623), by writing for the Protestant Church a Great Service and a Short Service, and for the Papists three masses, besides Madrigals, anthems and hymns, remained in the good graces of both factions.
In his position as Master of Musicke, he was called upon for music for every sort of occasion, and rose nobly to the challenge, inventing new types of composition as need arose. He composed a number of songs with string quartet accompaniments, actually the first vocal solos in which instruments played the part purely of accompaniment.
The music on this disc is in some ways very different from the ideal 16th century motet, and from the rest of Byrd's output. The words are set succinctly even tersely, in a manner that seems understated until after repeated hearings, the richness of its subtext emerges in the ear. One of the reasons for the music's restraint is its liturgical purpose; decorum or appropriateness was the highest aesthetic principle of the age, which Byrd fully respected. Thus, it was not written to be sung by large ranks of male choristers in large Gothic cathedrals, but for small private family worship and performed with a handful of trained musicians under the composer's direction. The intimacy of the music nevertheless encourages a certain spiritual intensity that Byrd had not attempted in his earlier motets.
There is no better group than Chanticleer (named after the Rooster in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales) to sing this literature. They are correct in every aspect : vocal accuracy as to pitch and tone quality; excellent balance between the parts and superior emotional investment. Just a great listen!!!!!
Following is a list of the selections:1."In Tempore Paschali" (In Paschal Time) mass for 5 voices. 2. "Regina caeli" (Queen of Heaven)motet for 3 voices 3. "In Assumptione Beatae Mariae Virginis" (On the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary)mass for 5 voices 4. "Ave Regina caelorum" (Hail, Queen of the Heavens)antiphon for 4 voices 5. "Salve Regina"(Hail, Queen)antiphon for 4 voices
Excellent music, faulty presentation.......2006-08-14
As a fan of both William Byrd and Chanticleer, I find no fault with either the composer or musicians on this recording. Chanticleer's sound is burnished as always, and well-represented by the engineers, and one has the joy of hearing some of Byrd's less well-known music (the Mass Proper setttings in his Gradualia of 1607). Byrd was superb at making much out of little, as he had to when composing music for clandestine Masses in the houses of Catholic noblemen.
My only criticism is with the presentation; while acknowledging that Classical Express is Harmonia Mundi's low-price line, this album could have been much improved by splitting individual selections into their own tracks, and including the texts in the liner notes instead of referring the listener to a website. These are both minor points, however, and the former is much more irritating than the latter.
Recommended.

One of the basics, plain and simple........2005-10-17
I can hardly ever seem to find any choral CD anywhere that truly hits the spot, and the reason is clearly that this was one of my very first. Nobody who loves English cathedral music or English choral singing in general should be without this disc, it is a basic. Aside from the approaching the highest possible standards of choral singing and being an exemplar of the stereotypical English choral sound (straight-tone sopranos, not straight-tone EVERYONE, clear and floating tenors, etc.), most of the tracks on this recording are total gems.
Of particular note are the Howells and Vaughan Williams, several of the Renaissance pieces, probably the best rendition of Tavener's Hymn to the Mother of God out there, "A Litany" by Walton, and Harris' "Bring Me, O Lord God" is a stunningly gorgeous end to the CD that will give you chills.
Eternal light.......2005-09-23
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church with this title, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The title of this disc derives from modern hymn (Charles Wood, in the early twentieth century) set to a more ancient text - a good example of the pairing of the ancient and the modern, the traditional and the timely.

As Good As It Gets.......2003-05-27
What a beautiful CD of English sacred music. I can't imagine a more perfect group of musicians than John Rutter and the Cambridge singers to capture the full range of emotional and spiritual expression in these selections. This is as good as sacred music performance gets.
Wonderful!.......1999-05-08
This CD is the most touching and beautiful collection of music from my homeland: it moves me beyond words.
Rutter's Cambridge Singers at their best.......1998-09-12
Spanning the centuries from Tallis to Tavener, this collection is well-chosen and shows off the skills of the choir and its conductor. If you are a devotee of the "straight-tone" choir (as the Cambridge Singers always are), any of their CDs would be delight. However, this one (and a similar one, "Faire is the Heaven") is almost like a good back-rub: leaving you relaxed, invigorated, and wanting more. (Assuming English church music is on your short list of favorite genres.)
Of special note are the title cut, Rutter's own "Loving Shepherd", and the last, "Bring Us, O Lord" by Harris. They are exquisitely conducted and sung. You want the last 6-8 measures of "Loving Shepherd" to last forever.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent argument for watching Shakespeare's plays.......2005-11-29
'Shakespeare's Musick' by Musicians of the Globe, lead by Philip Pickett is, like a similar recording, 'Songs and Dances from Shakespeare' by The Broadside Band' is a very nice recreation of what you would have heard at the Globe Theatre in London during or after the performances of Will Shakespeare's plays. I will also say that I believe it is just a bit better than the alternative recording if only for it's fewer 'Hey Nonnie Nonnies'. But, both recordings are not the best you can find of Renaissance music. Compared to excellent recordings of Renaissance dances and liturgical music, these seem to suffer from being out of context.
These are well worth the listen, but they will probably not set your toes to tapping as you might to performances by, for example, the Renaissance specialist band Piffaro.
Elizabethan Surprise!.......2000-02-12
If someone had asked me before I listened to the music provided on this CD if I liked English music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, I would have wrinkled my nose and said a resounding "Yuck!" I came across "Shakespeare's Musick" quite by accident at the local library. I was working on a project dealing with William Shakespeare and decided to take this CD home to see if it would fit into my theme. From the very first song to the very last, Philip Pickett and the Musicians of the Globe had me captivated. The sound is pure and lively and takes the listener on a ride that transcends time. It certainly made this listener a convert! I am now purchasing "Shakespeare's Musick" to add to my own collection and would highly recommend its addition to anyone elses. It will open your ears to a whole other world of sound -- sound that not only tickles the fancy, but enchants the soul.

There's no choir better than the Cambridge Singers for thoughtful, imaginative, cohesive programming, and for an ability to excel in performing music of various styles and periods. Here is a splendid example of this group's mastery of repertoire and choral technique, featuring some of the finest choral music ever written, from Tallis, Byrd, and Gibbons to Stanford, Howells, and Britten. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
The best!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-02
I am fond of sacred choral music, and I have listened to several groups and CDs. But I have yet to find any group with the superb quality of the Cambridge Singers! Under the direction of John Rutter their smooth, flawless music flows so seemingly effortlessly (though we know that much effort must be made for such angelic quality). The acoustics are awesome as the recording was recorded in an ancient cathedral. They say a whisper will resonate 5 seonds after the whisperer stops. And the selection of music as well is wonderful! There is a progression from the 1500s to the 1900s, and though all the music is nice the first portion is especially melodic, enchanting, relaxing, and inspiring!!! Therefore as the chorus, the recording sound, and the song selections are all EXCELLENT I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone! :)
Far more than faire..........2003-09-08
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral (the largest Lady Chapel in England), the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a great work in this album. Originally produced as a vinyl album in 1982, it was remastered as a CD in 1988. The title derives from a hymn lyric, and the music consists of a sampling of the greatest English church music from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.
--Music--
This is all vocal music, unaccompanied by instruments. The disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has a brief paragraph of introduction to each piece of music, relating it to its historic and musical contexts. One thing conspicuously missing is any significant biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic, one-sentence description.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices (about 28 voices for this recording), many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages.
"Treasures of English Church Music": same music, better buy.......2002-02-01
Thinking of purchasing the "Faire" and "Hail" CDs together? You will save money if you buy them in another guise: "Treasures of English Church Music." This 2-disk set is a reissue that combines Rutter's "Faire" and "Hail" CDs into a single package. You get the same disks for $12-$15 less.
Whatever the package, the music is gorgeous. Highly recommended.
Beautiful.......2001-08-22
Gorgeous sounding church music from early to 20th cent. A CD I play a lot - what more praise does it need?
John Rutter Presents English Chruch Music Through the Ages.......2000-08-19
In this atypical, that is, non-Christmas collection, John Rutter presents English church music from the 16th through the 20th centuries. While one may miss the absence of one or two compositions by Rutter himself, his capacity to achieve a unique sound with a choir is certainly here.
One who has enjoyed Rutter's Christmas music would do well to acquire this collection as well.

Customer Reviews:
Love this CD.......2007-05-15
Recently on a long, long flight from Israel, I was surprised to find this CD on the Delta Music list during the flight. I can't even remember how many times I listened to it and now I'm looking to buy it.
Exquisite Compilation.......2003-08-03
Angel's Waltz is the most amazing compilation of great sound energy. Sada's voice is that of an Angel. Her voice is so beautiful and soulful. She is singing from her heart and you really get that. I feel blessed every time I listen to this CD. It is easy to sing along to and you feel a sense of refreshment and peace after just one song. I play this all the time in the yoga classes that i teach, and countless students have purchased it to have at home or in their car.
Ethereal and Beautiful.......2003-07-17
Sada Sat Kaur's ANGEL'S WALTZ is beautiful and hypnotic. It has the ability to focus the mind while easing the spirit which makes it perfect for listening to while practicing yoga, creating artwork, or just unwinding. It is a wonderful collection and her voice is so sweet and soothing that I often listen to it when I retire at night.
Blissful & uplifting!.......2003-07-15
Sada Sat Kaur's voice is unique and the rhythms are soothing. The sound current seems to reach deep inside of you as you listen and you are elevated to a better place. Highly recommended for yoga practice or anytime you need your spirits lifted.
Uplifting and beautiful music.......2003-07-14
Angels' Waltz is celestial music. I enjoy listening to it while driving, while practicing yoga, and while meditating. Sada Sat Kaur has the voice of an angel. I teach Kundalini Yoga and often play this CD during the kriyas and sung meditations. My students absolutely love Angels' Waltz, so much so that I have requested a local store to carry the CD for my students who don't have access to the internet. My 8-year old son loves to sing along with Angels' Waltz, which I play often when I'm driving him to school in the morning. The music is calming and uplifting. One of my favorite tracks, Ra Ma Da Sa, moves me to tears sometimes. I am very much looking forward to Sada Sat Kaur's follow-up CD to Angels' Waltz!
