A Lou Bega imitation!.......2007-04-18

It is said that imitation is the highest form of flattery. If that be the case, Lou Bega should be all smiles because this mystery male singer that goes by Cuba Cuba and the aforementioned nameless female singer have teamed up to do a Christmas Mambo style. The very lack of information about this CD or on this CD makes it a bit of a collector's item. No copyright dates appear on the CD or any of the labels, however this CD appeared in the local Wal-Mart $6.00 Christmas CD rack the same year as Lou Bega's "A Little Bit of Mambo" which was released in August of 1999 so I'm going to guess that this CD was released in the same year. If you enjoyed "A Little Bit of Mambo" then you will probably enjoy this Christmas release, complete with samples and loops of Bega's trademark styled laughs, hoots and other sounds of Mambo syncopated excitement.

This version of "Silent Night" has more of a Reggae sound than Mambo. The layered female vocals on "The First Mambo Noel" make this song stand out as particularity enjoyable and in my opinion, the high point of the CD right after "Rudolph The Rednosed Reindeer". Their remake of "Angels We Have Heard On High" which takes the standard Mambo rhythm, add an interesting female vocal counter melody and the same digital vocal treatment to the male lead voice that was used on Cher's career song of rebirth in the late 90's and you've got a kick'n little tune. All in all, this is a great little nugget if you like quirky Christmas albums that capture an era or current gimmick as I do. I'd give it five stars but as Lou Bega's sound also wears thin after a few spins on the CD player, so does this one so I'll give it a four only for that reason only as it sounds "dated" right out from the shrink wrap. But for a Mambo album, there's only so far you can go at the risk of sounding like the previous song but isn't that what makes Mambo so enjoyable and danceable?

A hoot.......2004-12-16

Starting out with a rollicking rendition of "Rudolph The Rednosed Reindeer," this strange little CD moves through commercial and traditional Christmas songs with a Latin beat sometimes almost too fast to follow. One female singer has an incredibly pure voice and sings sweetly while the synchopatic mambo beat takes off in a seemingly different direction but measure-for-measure is in synch. This CD came to me through a mailing from friends in Holland and has to be a hard-to-find item.
