Album Description

Rare instrument specialist Thomas Bloch is equally at home performing on the soundtrack of Amadeus, on stage with Radiohead, or at Milan's La Scala (playing glass harmonica, cristal Baschet or ondes Martenot). This CD offers the widest possible range of repertoire for the ondes Martenot, one of the earliest electronic instruments (1919): a solo work and an ensemble for nine ondes Martenot (Bloch), chamber music (Martinu, Messiaen), double concerto with piano, orchestra and percussion (Wisson), electroacoustic compositions (Redolfi, Touchard), and a fully composed piece (Cooper) which contrasts with a partially improvised work (Rolin). These at times surprising works are performed by Bloch and some of his fellow-composers, and also feature Phil Minton, Fernand Quattrocchi, the Pomeranian Quartet and the Paderewski Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.

Wonderful.......2004-11-27

My love of Messiaen introduced me to the Ondes Martenot... and with this disc Thomas Bloch has shown us the full capabilities of the instrument. The Messiean work is a delight, his performance the best I have heard of this work so far. The Martinu not a grade A piece, but his performance does it justice. Virtually all other works on the disc were new to me. Some are a challenge the first time through, not really intended as background music in any way. But soon I had a chance to really sit and listen and enjoyed all works. Clearly his technique is superb, no surprise there given his work on the Turringalia Syphony I had heard previously. But I did not know he was a composer of considerable merit. These works stand well on their own, an interest in Ondes Martenot not required. I look forward to more discs.

Excellent recording of unusual and entertaining music.......2004-10-29

Thomas Bloch and his fellow musicians have made a real winner with this CD. The music is diverse and interesting and the performances are lovely.

I am unfamiliar with some of the composers presented on this disc (Martinu and Messiaen are the most well known), but there are some very good pieces of music here - even though they might not be described as 'masterpieces'. Bernard Wilson's double concerto for ondes Martenot, piano, strings and percussion reminds me of Bartók's piano concertos.

Some of the other pieces on this CD are works of pure fantasy. If you want to know what 9 ondes Martenot sound like when played together, Thomas Bloch's Wave Orchestra provides you with a delightful answer.

The ondes Martenot is one of my favourite 20th century 'period instruments' and this disc is a wonderful introduction to this instrument.

I have listened to some other more famous works by Milhaud, but this chamber music album is one of my favorite. None of the pieces in this collection is large, but they are all very expressive and abundant in emotion. Milhaud sounds avant-garde even in our time, but there is some kind of charming harmony in his music. I think his music is much easier to appreciate than those atonal works. It will take you a while to appreciate his creativity if your ears are used to music of baroque era and classical era, but it is going to be rewarding.

As for recording, compared to other old recordings of Milhaud's works, some actually conducted by the composer himself, this new recording is very clear and enjoyable. If you like Milhaud's music, you should not miss this album.

No matter how you feel about the accordion--and there are those who would not grant it a place in jazz, though it was there almost from the beginning--Richard Galliano deserves attention. Classically trained, he turned next to becoming an accompanist for several important French singers, and then to jazz, finally settling on a very individual style based on all these elements. With monster chops and a gift for rhythm, Galliano has become the Art Tatum of his instrument--but a Tatum with bebop phrasing. This box set of three concerts captures Galliano's range. Disc No. 1 is a solo performance at Museo Emilia Greco a Orvieto in Italy in 1999; the second CD is a 1998 duo with reedman Michel Portal on NDR radio in Hamburg; and the third is a 1996 performance at Montreux with a trio including drummer Daniel Humair and the late Jean-Francois Jenny Clark on bass.

Most of the pieces on these recordings are Galliano originals, and they stick close to the French taste in accordion repertoire--some waltzes, some very free tango, and lots of doubletime and flash fingering. But there are also several fascinating versions of Astor Piazzolla's "Libertango," and there's some Hermeto Pascoal. The solo disc shows something of his ability, but when he adds Portal, the music moves out a bit, and toys with sonority. When he adds the premier European rhythm section on disc No. 3, it's his feeling for swing that's on display. This music is not for everybody, of course. But if everybody could hear this box, they would probably agree that this is truly exceptional music. --John F. Szwed

Atrocious mastering/recording quality on this set; bleak and dull.......2007-05-01

I am the first one to ignore the less-than-perfect mastering or recording when the beautiful music calls for it; this set, however, is an entirely opposite case when even the gorgeous performances simply can't outcry the butchery brought onto them in the production process. Buy some other three titles from Galliano for the same money and skip this particular set!!!

Album Description

One of the most influential violists of our time, Joseph de Pasquale has had a profound impact on the repertoire and perception of the instrument. The dedicatee of the 25th International Viola Congress, which honored his revolutionary contributions to the field of viola performance, he holds a 50-year combined record as principal violist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra. His signature rendition of Berlioz's Harold in Italy has become a reference work for students of the piece. And heading a distinguished musical family, he is violist of the De Pasquale String Quartet, joining with family members William and Robert, violinists, and Gloria, cellist - all members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Mr. De Pasquale's years with the Boston Symphony spanned the tenures of conductors Koussevitsky, by whom he was appointed principal violist, Munch and Leinsdorf; during that time he premiered the Piston Viola Concerto, which had been written for! him, and those of Walton and Milhaud. As principal violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy, Muti and Sawallisch, he performed virtually every major viola concerto, premiering Martinu's Rhapsody Concerto, Bruch's Romanze, Shulman's Theme and Variations, and Hummel's Potpourri. He has performed and recorded with such celebrated artists as violinist Jascha Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. Since 1990, he has been performing and recording exclusively with pianist Angelin Chang. A graduate of the Curtis Institute, where he studied with Louis Bally, Max Aronoff and William Primrose, he has served on the faculties of Indiana University and New England Conservatory and currently teaches at Curtis. His students hold positions in major orchestras worldwide.

Since I heard Né la thiass a couple of years ago Cheikh Lô has been one of my absolute favorites... Especially the brilliant playing with those deliciously complex mbalax rhythms in Africa Den renders me speechless and breathless... A must for friends of African music.
