Perhaps not as pretty as previous studio releases, Krishna Das's Breath of the Heart nevertheless captures the ecstasy, devotion, and life-affirming qualities of chant. Ably abetted by rap and rock producer Rick Rubin, Das joins with a choir dubbed the Kosmic Kirtan Posse, featuring the East and West Coast Posses, a group of some 50 members including Mike D of the Beastie Boys, while instruments as diverse as harmonium, Hammond B3 organ, violin, guitar, cymbals, and drums play backdrop.

Das and friends, through their gorgeously imperfect music, manage at once to exalt the divine and spotlight the inevitable suffering of the human condition. The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

"It's so beautiful".......2005-03-13

This is a direct quote from my 7 year old. I added CD this as well as "Pilgram Heart" to my wish list and was suprised when they both arrived in a box for my children. I have this in the cd alarm to awaken gradually to a peaceful, heartfelt morning. It's playing when I wake my daughter. At bedtime, I turned the cd on and my daughter looked peacefully up at me and proceded to tell me about her dream where a boy found a key, opened a door and then he and his family began to sing this song (Babu Hanuman) It was so beautiful. I asked her what was so beautiful and she replied his singing, It's so beautiful. It is.

Great Voice.......2005-03-07

His great voice and message are great for doing yoga or med. Very soothing. The liner notes included are great if you want to chant with him or understand what he is saying. I work for Gold's Gym as a yoga instructor and it goes over great there

Caught me by surprise, too........2004-08-23

Count me among the new members of the posse. The excerpts you can listen to here don't do this CD or the music justice. These are chants and naturally, they start slow and roll on to a full boil like a pot of water on the fire. By midway, things are usually rockin'. The pieces you hear on Amazon are the warming and don't represent.

This is unusual music for me to have in my collection but a friend made a workout tape and included the first track from this CD. It's as hypnotic as they come and I was hooked from first listen. It's not just me though. I play music for my class of 250 students before each lecture... I mean, we have a great sound system in the lecture hall, why not use it, right? I put Krishna Das on one day and received over 20 requests about the musician. On a very good day I might get two but this track perked the students right up.

If you've ever heard Enigma and thought it sounded at least somewhat interesting, next time you want to try something new, gives this CD a gamble. And then try to get the chants out of your head.

I was in a bookstore and heard this CD and I bought it on the spot. Listening to this album invigorates my spirit everytime I listen. Thank you Krishna Das for sharing the gift of spirit and Kirtan through your voice with the world. Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo.

Really the "Breath of the Heart".......2004-03-08

The kirtans touch my insides. Tears flow. The body naturally swings and goes into a very relaxed state. It has left me wanting for more. I'll be going to his concert in Berkeley in April.

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

Learn to Grow.......2007-07-01

This is my third Karen Jacobsen disc. She recasts some tracks from Being Brave (title track + "Here In My Heart") & As I Am ("Don't Miss You") into a full band arrangement. While I had become enraptured by her simple piano-based arrangements, the transplanted songs work well. "Strong Woman" is an anthem that sounds like a theme song for woman's mental health day. Karen's vocals are the backbone and strength of her performance on the bubbly "The Best I Can." After a handful of listenings to the disc, I keep trying to get traction here as I did on her other discs. Karen's material seems to wash out a bit behind the band, sounding bland, not overly original, "It's not enough to make you disappear; It's not enough to push you away from here; It's not enough for me to know that this is just the way we have to learn to grow." The title track from her "Being Brave" set is a strong melody that fares well with instruments that serve the melody well. Karen Jacobsen is an excellent singer who is developing as an artist. This disc is one that shows growth; however, it comes across a bit faceless without a few great tracks to make it memorable. That said, her performance is always worth hearing. Enjoy!

I first heard Karen Jacobsen several years ago, when she was new to New York (and America), trying out material on Tuesday nights at a little Greenwich Village bar. She built a steady following, and since then her style has blossomed, and she has also put together a producing team worthy of her musical and songwriting talents.
At first, you might think Jacobsen is just another pop pianist princess-- a less angry Alanis, say, or a not-so-angsty Sarah McLachlan. But listen to the complexity of these melodic lines, not to mention the great range of styles and subjects in her songs. Jacobsen can revel in an emotional anthem ("Not Enough") or tenderly stroke a sweet lullaby ("Being Brave") or stand proud with the what should be Oprah's next theme song ("Strong Woman"). She can make you cry ("Here in My Heart"), or lift you up ("You're OK"). And that's before we even get to the travelogues ("London Town") or the heartbreaking ballads ("Don't Miss You"). Throughout, the stunning piano arrangements and clear, floating vocals will transport you.
From her early NYC days at the Duplex, to her more recent appearances at Joe's Pub, or singing the national anthem at a variety of stadiums around the country, or on this pristinely produced CD, Karen Jacobsen is a musical force to be reckoned with. Somewhat disappointing.......2005-09-25

There are some unique and interesting songs of this album. Unfortunately the performance does not shine. I found the singing and accompaniment a bit slow and monotonous and uninspired. Furthermore, it was difficult to understand the words at times (indistinct enunciation). There are a few exceptions: tracks 3, 4, 9, 20, 21 I gave 3 stars in iTunes; all the rest got two stars or less. If you want beautiful, traditional choral music, I recommend any of the albums featuring the Cambridge Singers over this collection.

Hypnotic.......2000-01-17

This CD is georgous. A remix of certain songs from the Golden Palominos's Pure CD, No Thought, No Eyes, No breath will put you into a blissful state of sensory overload. It's best to listen to Pure first, in order to hear where the songs originated from, but its still a great accomplishment on its own.
