Authenticity is a tricky construct in pop music. In Rumba Argelina, guitarist and composer Fain Dueñas, wind player Vincent Molino, and vocalist Benjamin Escoriza, the core of the Spanish group Radio Tarifa, blend traditional North African music, flamenco, and a dash of rhythms from the New World, most notably Cuba, with a contemporary pop sensibility. The results sound surprisingly organic--even when some of the mixes take disorienting turns. "Oye China" suggests a son or guajira--until an accordion and a mysterious wind instrument (bansuri?) come in. When the song turns again, however, it evokes a vallenato. "Soledad" alludes to flamenco but also to Brian Eno. Then again, as Dueñas & Co. define it, this is border music, the music of an imaginary radio station in Tarifa, the southernmost point in Spain. What it suggests depends on your point of reference--but leave that for musicologists. Most important, Rumba Argelina is a delightful, rich, sensual experience, armchair traveling at its best. --Fernando Gonzalez

delicious sound.......2007-02-13
I like this album very much... Close your eyes and listen to the songs.. you will think that you are somewhere between Granada and Marocco!
a musical place I'm always happy to return to.......2006-05-04
If I ever get invited to be on that NPR Harrisburg radio show "Desert Island" where you play selections of the 10 albums that you absolutely must have with you to continue your life in the deepest, happiest, most connected way possible (or something like that), this will be at the top of my list. Where it's been for the last 9 years, a refreshing fountain always ready when you need it. And you can dance to it.
Music from the south of Spain!.......2005-02-03
Great music that combines the Gypsy, Moorish and Mediterranean influences with some Cuban rythm! If you are proud of your roots like me, you will enjoy the album and the other two that follow.
An Exotic Combination : Spanish & Arabic.......2002-04-25
Deep-rooted, authentic music you might expect to hear in some far off land ... The stringed instruments, wind-blow instruments, drums, percussion & vocals provide just the right blend of natural sounds. The raw, earthy male vocals remind one of haunting gypsy music - the liner notes provide a translation: lost love, yearning to be recognized and fulfilled. Passionate emotions, almost groaning from within, rumbling like a volcano ready to erupt, revealing feelings only Meditarranean male vocalists can produce.
"Rumba Argelina" the mysterious title of this CD unfolds like a bud which blooms in the spring: the rain showers come and go, the green leaves unfurl on the trees, the flowers bloom, the cycle of nature is complete. The music here is fresh, original, exotic and mysterious. If gypsy or Middle Eastern music appeals to you: you will love this CD. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
Bridging cultures.......2001-10-27
For some strange reason I began listening to this disc even more after the 9/11 events and it has been a little unsettling. The looks one gets from listening to what some mistakeningly may think is Arabic music is odd. The music itself is hauntingly beautiful has a result. There is not a weak song on the disc and each has a unique flavor reflecting the Moorish influence resulting from Spains proximity to North Africa and the indelible mark left from the Islamic occupation for 700 years. The music is a remarkable combination of instruments, both old and new world, coming together to create a synthesis of sound reflecting the duality of Spanish culture. Images of the Alhambra, Christian motiffs mixing with geometric tiles, fretwork windows revealing orange and palm trees, pools of water and distant mountains with white buildings in the foreground, all this brought you by Radio Tarifa. There are not many more beautiful discs than this. Some of the songs have a spiritual feel, each is transcendental is some way. Each track takes the listener to faraway lands, a different time period, exotic images slightly tarnished by the modern harsh realities of a post 9/11 world. To say this disc is genius is not hyperbole, it is simple yet complex, a dense and fluid arrangement of songs for the time traveler, truly unique and enchanting. The opening track "Rhumba Argelina " is a perfect example of the gitano experience that awaits. Not sure? Check out track two, "Oye China," with it's lament and melodic interplay between the musicians. A truly fantastic piece of music to be enjoyed by all who love world music.

Early, youthful Rostropovich, who is 80 this year........2007-07-14
First the most important stuff: sound quality through out is very good to excellent.
These two CD's are two Westminster vinyl albums, one from 1953 and the other from 1954, with a short Paganini with no known recording history thrown in to extend these two CD's, which are "short in time" for CD's. The first CD runs under 45 minutes, but the double CD set is priced accordingly and is a bargain.
Several of the album cuts were never released on a CD before this set, which celebrates Rostopovich's 80th birthday, Of course they are all mono recordings. While listening to the music you will never miss the stereo, as the high sound quality through out permits Rostropovich to shine.
Westminster was the best vinyl source for anything Russian classical way back when, only to be, perhaps, out done by the recent Yedang CD's.
These performances show a young developing celloist, already a master of the cello...exubriant and at the same time..warm and moving ..quite suprising and most rewarding.
Mistislav is my favorite celloist. If he touches you, I recommend these early satisfying recordings.
5 stars for the recordings, 4 stars for the compilation.

Named after a fictional radio station at the southernmost tip of Spain, Radio Tarifa ostensibly would broadcast to the Iberian Peninsula as well as the southern shores of the Mediterranean. Proving that the distance between flamenco and Arabic music, electric and ancient instruments, and African and pop rhythms aren't all that far apart, the aptly named band is a crossroads of musics, cultures and eras. Strong musicianship pulled it together on its three studio efforts, and does so again here on the group's first live album, which was recorded in 2002. While fans are treated to two new songs, the older ones are a revelation as well, offering up fresh versions of favorites like "Ronda de Sanabria," "La Mosca," and "Tangos del Agujero." Indeed, the band seems to be playing to the crowd and for each other throughout, which is the best reason to document any group in the live setting. --Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
Radio Tarifa celebrated its tenth anniversary with the 2004 Latin Grammy-nominated Fiebre (Fever), a live album recoreded during a remarkable concert in Toronto, Canada. The album - which The Evening Standard calls "raw, exhilarating, summery and sexy" - captures the dynamism of the live show and takes us on a musical journey spanning the last ten years of Radio Tarifa. The record marks the band's fourth Nonesuch/World circuit release.
Customer Reviews:
Astoundingly passionate CD! Just beautiful........2007-03-24
I LOVE this CD!! Every track is fantastic! If I were rich, I'd buy a thousand copies and start passing them out on street corners so that more people would know how wonderful this album is.
Radio Tarifa is tremendously talented, with a unique sound. They combine flamenco sounds of Southern Spain with Arabic sounds from Northern Africa. They even use ancient arabic instruments.
This particular album was recorded live (in Canada, I think) and it makes me wish I had been there to hear it. If you've ever been at a live performance where the tension is thick, and the electricity tangible...well, this album is one of those.
This album makes me want to close my eyes and whirl. It makes me feel alive. My senses are heightened. My skin tingles. My mind races. My heart beats louder.
What more can I say? If you like this type of sound, you will love this album. Beautiful. Electric.
Celebratory passion.......2007-02-27
Recorded in concert and covering music from their previous discs this disc reveals the passion of their music, hence the title "Fiebre" or fever(hot, on fire). Radio Tarifa employs other musicians for their live sets but the sound pretty much remains the same. The result is a fusion delight that features Middle Eastern sounds mixing seemlessly with Spanish guitar for a nice wolrd music treat. The opening track "Jote Bereber" exemplifies this fusion as Spanish folk music is mixed with Moroccan rhythms. Lead singer Benjamin Escoriza breaks the extended jam session with a sorrowful and painful tale of love. The blending of Middle Eastern ad Spanish cultures is further presented with "Elli Yeddi Hag Ennas" that utilizes old(Precursor to Rai) Algerian music as passionate vocals and sax lively up the set. There are many great songs here including "Oye China" that is more of a traditional flamenco song with Latin American influences, the title track from one of their previous CD's entitled "Cruzando el Rio" features flamenco tango and wild flute,"La Mosca" that features Bereber folk instrumental parts to a traditional Granada folk song with multi meanings and the old Sephardic-Jewish melodies found in "Cancion Sefardi" which has French Rennaisance instrumental parts over Benjamins grief ridden vocals. If you like world music fusion or flamenco inspired music than you will love this disc. I have their previous discs that are studio produced and this is a nice addition to the Radio Tarifa collection. The live versions are at times more interesting than the studio versions, at other times vice versa but anyway you look at it, this disc is a winner. The accompanying booklet has all the lyrics in Spanish and English and is very informative regarding the origins, influences and inspiration for each song. Great world music for that musical voyage.
Authenticity pounded by theater .......2006-12-09
I own all four Radio Tarifa CDs, but I must admit that I don't like the live CD "Fiebre" at all. I listened to it 3-4 times and then put it away. Though other reviewers term it "exciting", to me it sounded like the individual musicians were trying too hard to "intensify" their solos for the sake of the on-stage performance.
I find that one of the beauties of live flamenco concerts - of which RT's style is a unquestionably a spinoff - is that the music is astoundingly "controlled", even the most fiery of solos. There's no Jimi Hendrix, playing with his teeth. In fact, the only "show-off" flamenco guitarist I've ever seen was a German. He's a great guitar player, but analytical, and someone who had clearly mastered his craft through study - definitely not "a natural". He compensated by hopping around on his chair while playing, but his "vibrancy" looked like the result of fire ants in his underpants, not hereditary soul.
In most of the solos in the Fiebre concert, I got the impression the musicians were "showing off" - appealing to the audience rather than focussing on their music - which is the antithesis of what I like.
If you want to try Radio Tarifa, buy Rumba Argelina. It's great, but it demonstrates the problem created by a fantastic first album: the group has a hard time living up to expectations. Imagine if Sergeant Pepper had been the Beatles' first!
Beautiful.......2006-11-21
There songs are mesmerizing (but not in a flaky new-age sound way). There are strong Flamenco sounds intertwined with Middle Eastern and other world influences. There voices sound good and the instrumentals sound good too (especially the various percussion and world instruments), so it's not like some other artists that are only good at the singing or only good at the instruments.
Exciting, intense fusion of musics from India to Spain.......2006-03-23
Exciting, intense. Audience participation just kicks it up a notch. More room for long improvisations than on a studio album, but most remains tight. An ever-varying fusion of Indian, Middle Eastern, Balkan, Arabic, Spanish, and rock idioms. Each track highlights a few, layering them or placing each in a distinct instrument. The fusion never homogenizes; rather, it juxtaposes in a way that reveals underlying connections. Tracks often break from one distinct style to another, and sometimes return or cycle-another form of effective juxtaposition. Vocal is typically world-weary. Drone woodwinds can deepen this; tight polyrhythms can throw it in sharp contrast. Many different elements offer lots of opportunities for varying textures, which the band exploits well. Precise notes on specific origins of each track mainly point to Spanish sources; sounds much more hybrid to me. [56:51]

On their previous releases, Rumba Argelina and Temporal, Radio Tarifa explored the network of musical connections between North Africa and Spain. With this release, they burrow ever deeper into the music, tracing not only the roots of flamenco--check out the foot percussion on "Patas Negras" to hear the Moorish antecedents of a very Spanish sound--but going back as far as the Renaissance with "Si J'ai Perdu Mon Ami," with its rich oboe sound. There's even "Gujo Bushi," a Japanese tune that they make fit into the overall idea. The biggest musical change is the use of electric guitar, which can seem jarring at first. But this is robust music that's lived for centuries on both sides of the Mediterranean, and it can adapt to all manner of ideas--something Radio Tarifa have in abundance with their imaginative arrangements and strong sense of melody. Where the hypnotic senses of Moroccan trance music meet the passion of flamenco, bridging space and time, that's where you'll find Radio Tarifa. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
A North African/Mediterranean flavor unique in style........2004-08-30
From the opening, buzzing Middle Eastern cut 'Osu', it's obvious CRUZANDO EL RIO provides a North African/Mediterranean flavor unique in style - and not to be missed.
There's lots of powerful vocals to back up the Middle East influences in Radio Tarifa's CRUZANDO EL RIO: perhaps more notable is the lively dance beats than the lamenting ballads which weave in and out.
Great!.......2004-01-19
If you're into flamenco music in any way, this will be a nice addition to your collection. A bit of flamenco mixed with arabic sounds. Original! Good indeed. actually, very good.
Captivating, inventive music.......2002-09-20
This Spanish trio is one of the most creative and eclectic world music bands of recent vintage, although, admittedly, they do have a bit of a prefab, made-for-NPR-and-Borders sheen to them. On this disc they shy away a bit from the slightly ambient leanings of earlier albums, and delve deeper into the Arabic shrillness of Spain's Moorish heritage. There's also still plenty of crosscultural intersplicing, with hints of Celtic, Asian and African music throughout, as well as an ever-present, ever-clever bit of Appalachian banjo picking and country guitar which pops up from time to time. It's a deftly crafted, seamlessly produced album, which balances gritty traditionalism and modern sleekness with admirable grace. A very accessible version of Arabic music, and an album that can grow on you, quite quickly... check it out!
Music of alternating joy, nostalgia, regret, and hope.......2002-08-28
This is outstanding world music from several traditions: Castillan, Andalusian, Japanese. The instrumentation is quite unique, using a number of traditional instruments from the various cultures.
Music styles include flamenco, and tango. This is the kind of music that you can enjoy without understanding the language. After, it's the sound, not the precise ideas conveyed by mere words, that gives this CD its strength.
I can't compare this with the group's previous CDs since I haven't listened to them. But judging from this one, Radio Tarifa is a group that should please world music lovers. The album is short, at 36 minutes, but definitely recommended.
Can you find the beauty in a flock of honking geese?.......2002-06-24
I can. My wife compares some of the (jarring) honks/squonks on this album to the songs of over-flying Canadians--geese, that is. I found this CD grew on me and overtook the previous RT offerings. My kids love to dance to it. I sing along while washing the dishes--ok, ok, I make up "Spanish-sounding" words--and while driving anywhere. This set of songs is like attending a Latin family reunion: The emotions run high at times, but through it all there's a clear sense of fun and love (for the music). Don't give up on this one 'til you've listened at least a half-dozen times.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
One of the most fascinating world music albums of 1998 is by a group that, until success struck, did not really exist. Radio Tarifa are named after a fictitious radio station and play music that sounds indigenous to Iberia but is actually a remarkably organic hybrid of modern styles and ancient traditions. Temporal is a delightful, provocative surprise. Think border music for a borderless world. --Fernando Gonzalez
Amazon.com
With Mediterranean instruments like the oud, derbuka and ney, Radio Tarifa collapses recognizably Arabic sounds with flamenco rhythms, playing with a flair reminiscent of a traditional Balkan wedding band. (The Spanish ensemble also tackles a 16th-century Sephardic tune and a 12th-century French procession.) Central to Radio Tarifa's charm is the rough-edged voice of Benjamin Escoriza, whose throaty elocution makes his Spanish a terrific blur of clarity and wavering timbre. Aside from the Mediterranean percussion--supplied mainly by the differently-pitched hand drums--Radio Tarifa also dots its grooves with Afro-Cuban inflected bongos and an electric bass, making this global concatenation particularly delightful. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Good, but first CD is better.......2006-12-09
I have all four Radio Tarifa CDs. Like some other reviewers, I find the first - Rumba Argelina - the best. I think the cut "La Canal" is their very best effort. Temporal is certainly cool music, but in my opinion, it doesn't match up to its predecessor.
Regarding the comments that some of the songs on Temporal sound like they're performed by someone other the usual lead singer (Benjamin Escoriza), in fact they are. According to the insert, cuts 5 and 6 feature a guest vocalist called "Falo", whose voice I don't like very much.
Temporal certainly bears the unique Radio Tarifa sound, but given the fact that it only has ten tracks, and two feature a vocalist I don't like, I felt a bit short changed.
My origens .......2005-04-01
This music brings out the Mediterranean in me, it's good. If you like it check the other two albums there good too!
Music you can taste smell and touch.......2004-10-26
Although I don't think I can add too much to what has been said by others, I am compelled to tell you just how much this visceral recording grabs me. I feel like I am with the musicians.... I'm just not sure exactly where, on the map, that is! I know where Tarifa is, but the place this music takes me is pure fantasy. Wonderful carnal joy! If ever there was an advertisement for travelling to Spain, it is this recording. I like R. Argelina too, but this one you can taste, smell and touch. Pour a glass of full bodied red and enjoy!
Just as beautiful as Rumba Argelina -- their other cd.......2002-12-29
I just love this cd. It is more beautiful than the Rumba Argelina cd that I own. I got it for a friend. It really makes you immagine Spain when ruled by the North Africans. It is just a great mix of new and old, and thank god they don't use the stupid sax that they did on R.A.
several good songs.......2001-07-19
one reviewer likes the Rumba...cd better. i agree--the sound of the man's voice is a bit harsh this time. i wonder if its the same man. there are a few good songs on temporal. i like cancion sefardi....and i like tangos de la condicion and vestido flores. i program my cd player to play only these 3 songs. if you want to dance and dance and dance try rumba argelia--all the songs on that cd are great.

Album Description

Each compilation includes child-proven works first heard in the award-winning and best-selling Classical Kids series but extended and without narration. Liner notes include fascinating facts about each composer plus an introduction to the award-winning Classical Kids CDs - to build Classical Kids fans for the next generation.
Customer Reviews:
kitemom.......2007-03-13
Really love the CD but most importantly my 2 year old does! We can spend all day with it on the back ground. I like this series because the recordings are carefully curated orchestral selections rather than a children's adaptation. The only variation is that some movements are abridged for shorter attention spans. There is nothing wrong with children's adaptations, it's good to expose the kids to any type of music.

Musica de la vida.......2007-03-18
this musica is the soundtrack to the raw undeniable feeling of blood pumping through human existence, timeless.
ana is a typo, the singer is remedios flores.......2001-12-26
This is one of my favorite records, along with other recordings of this incredible couple, Rodrigo and Remedios. However, I know that the desciption "Ana Rodrigo" is wrong, the singer is Remedios Flores. Please correct this in your listing.
rodrigo died in 1996, remedios now is living in san diego.......2001-12-26
I love this record and found out that rodrigo and remedios made many more recordings that were never released. After a lot of research, I found out that Rodrigo died in 1996 at the age of 47, and a great career in music was cut short. He was survived by his wife Remedios who now lives in San Diego, California. She has not recorded since. I would really like some musicologist to find her and try to get her to sing again. She is incredible and a real treasure. What a shame that an era is on the verge of dying out. I would be glad to help anyone interested, if I can....
AMAZING.......2001-04-19
the wonderful guitar made me move in my seat while i was sitting in front of my computer screen. loved the soulful and unique sound of rodrigo and remedios. these two artists are great!!! a must have for any flamenco afficianado.

Customer Reviews:
It Would Be Worth Every Cent Just for the Brahms Sonatas.......2006-12-19
This is probably my favorite boxed set of anything, ever. Each disc has its own merits but the Brahms and Franck are passionate and sublime, the Bartok is everything you want your Bartok to be, and of course the Tchaikovsky is without comparison. Long live King David!
Essential Oistrakh.......2002-01-10
A mandatory purchase (at a bargain price!) for all violin lovers- it contains some of Oistrakh's greatest recorded performances, including mind-boggling performances of the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Brahms and and Dvorak concerti as well as the famous sonata recordings with Richter. Please, BMG, could we have more such treasures from Melodiya's legendary vaults?
Fantastic.......2000-07-31
Perhaps the great accomplishment in playing an instrument is to play it naturally, as if it were like breathing. Few artists prove this point as well as Oistrakh, the Soviet Union's artist, a true symbol of the Russian's school of music's excellence. As some other reviewer said, this is a moment of true musical orgasm. As an aspiring violinist, hearing Oistrakh's effortless rendition of the Tchaikovsky brings one almost to tears before such greatness. Some may complain about his dated method, but I favor it above any other artist, and highly recommend his interpretation of both the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky. Considering the fact that people didn't walk out of his performance of the pieces while a bombing raid was going on (during WWII), the man's musical prowess is second to none. Of special attention is the Brahms Sonata in A Major with Richter, easily one of the purest performances of the piece.
A wondeful collection.......2000-07-01
David Oistrakh has arguably the best pure tone of all who have ever played the violin--bar none.
Oistrakh (and Richter) Triumphant!.......2000-02-07
Reviewer David Mednicoff is exactly right about this set. All the concerto performances are terrific, but the two discs of sonatas (Brahms #2 & 3; Frank; Shostakovich [the live world premiere] and Bartok) with Richter are really something else. Amazing.

Nice collection of operatic dances.......2004-12-12
This is another wonderful issue from the naxos opera collection. The dances are the standards that appear on many other collections, but not a such a low price. These dances are all enchantingly played.
