Viva Brasil is Brazilian Jazz from the San Francisco Bay Area
Band members: Claudio Amaral
Marcos Silva
Rubens Moura Jr.
Jeff Buenz
Product Description
Twelve years after their self-titled debut "Viva Brasil", the band recorded a second album at legendary Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. In that time, a few new members from the Flora Purim-Airto circle were added to the line-up. Most notable is Marcos Silva, a masterful Brasilian keyboardist whose own successful solo albums with his band Intersection on the Concord Jazz Label most evidently influenced the new and well honed Brasilian Jazz sound of Viva Brasil nineties recording, FESTA.
The concept of Festa was to capture exactly that-a "Festa" meaning, a "party." It was apparent to their fans that the energy of their live shows had to be captured on tape. Unlike Festas predecessor, the self titled "Viva Brasil", this album consists mainly of hand selected Brasilian songs that Viva Brasil craftfully rearranged and worked out through countless performances, eventually making them creations with the Viva Brasil signature.
The tightness and ease of the bands playing is evident on every single track. Familiar songs like Joao Boscos "Coisa Feita" and Filos "Perfume de Cebola" stay true to their Brasilian spirit, but are enhanced by new harmonic treatments and modern brasilian drumming. Often the songs begin sparsely and gradually build up in intensity, taking the listener on a climactic ride that proves as irresistible at live concerts. Noteworthy are the flawless solos and comping of pianist Marcos Silva, his tasteful colorings weaving in and out of Claudios silky vocal passages.
Of course, original songs like the upbeat "Ele E Carioca" showcase the rapid development of the band in both songwriting and performance. "Getaway", true to its melancholic bossa nova core, literally paints the perfect sunset, if only for our ears.
Had the band remained in Brasil, one can only wonder as to where its chapter in the annals of modern Brasilian music might be found. Unreleased in California in the early nineties, the fresh and unaltered release of FESTA (7BR 3984 26695-2) today gives us the chance to hear for the first time, the exciting next phase of Viva Brasil. Surely an album deserving a page among the Brasilian Jazz greats.

The Godfather saga may have its roots in pulp fiction, but the vision of director Francis Ford Coppola turned the story of Don Vito Corleone into an epic, multigenerational metaphor for modern American society and its place in the world. Coppola's musical choices were equally sage; aged Italian scoring legend Nino Rota's mournful solo trumpet theme ("Godfather Waltz") would become both a crucial, emotional link in all three films and an enduring modern icon on a par with the themes to Star Wars and Jaws. This compendium gathers key themes from the Godfather trilogy in modern rerecordings, by conductor Paul Bateman and the Prague Philharmonic, that are sonically pristine and faithful to the originals. Utilizing the rich musical heritage of his native Italy (and occasionally evoking memories of his great collaborations with Fellini), Rota's Godfather music would ultimately net him his only Oscar ®, for Godfather II. Carmine Coppola, the director's father, supplements Rota's work with music that's more distinctly ethnic, while the prelude from Italian classical composer Pietro Mascagani's masterful opera Cavalleria Rusticana becomes a crucial element in Godfather III, filling the void left by Rota's passing in 1979. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Noticeably different from the original soundtrack, but that doesn't make it any less fantastic........2006-11-10
However, when I got the CD in the mail, I was pleasantly surprised. While I did notice some differences (Tarantella sounds somewhat changed) between the Collection songs and the original analogs, they were not a change for worse. These tracks produced the same, if not greater emotional response than those from the films.
Listening to the whole soundtrack is a great experience from beginning to end for fans of the films and their music, and I absolutely praise the Prague Philharmonic orchestra, Crouch End Festival Chorus, and conductor Paul Bateman for their excellent transition of the original work into this 30th Anniversary collection.
If you like the music from the films, get this disc!

Do not confuse music you love with rendition you won't.......2003-11-11
Yes, the tunes are memorable and, right from the first movements, they evoke the ghosts of complex cinematic imagery that are so deeply ingrained in the mind of anyone who loves this film. But the magic is gone. You know it's not THE soundtrack, and you've heard the real thing so many times.
The truth is that if you had Pavarotti to sing classic songs of The Rolling Stones, you would be disappointed with the result - despite the fact that Luciano has a much better voice than Mick Jagger.
Those artists who recorded the original soundtrack 30 years ago in Hollywood - and who remembers their names today? - were probably not as accomplished as the Prague Philarmonic. But they created the real thing, and therefore this cover disc will forever be no more than nice background music. That's all I use it for.
Great Quality.......2003-07-15
I bought the regular Godfather 1 cd after this, and I've hardly touched it since I bought it. I think this Godfather Trilogy is far superior in audio quality and performance. I think it has more feeling then the originals.
Disappointing performance of classic Godfather music..........2003-01-09

This set contains the two CDs that, it must be acknowledged, just about started the Chant craze in 1994. The music was actually recorded in the 1970s and 1980s (this new set has been remastered and sounds better than the 1994-95 releases did) and was on sale in Spain and offered at the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos for some time before it became "hot." Since then, hundreds of CDs of chant and similar music have appeared, many more polished then these, but perhaps these were so special because they weren't performances: they caught actual Monks in the act of praying, and the meditative quality is undeniably real. Whatever the case, this is music for reflection, calming down, re-fueling and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life--which may be even more needed now than they were 10 years ago. Texts are not supplied and you won't need them; it's all about reverence and mood. Doing nothing but listening to this in 25-minute chunks will allow your breathing to slow and re-energize you. Each 55-minute CD will probably put you to sleep--and this isn't meant as a criticism. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

describe these chants, a most perfect gift
for Christmas. This reissue sounds even better
than the ones released in the mid 90's.
I would highly recommend this recording to anyone.
The only rule is sit down, or lay back and enjoy.
FANTASTIC!!.......2006-01-25
However, this complaint aside, I love the Anniversary Edition. Although the track sequence is different from the original Chant CD and I find myself expecting certain chants to follow others, I will in time get used to the differences.
Moving on, this is not complicated material. There is no polyphonic, raucous, symphonic accompaniment. There are no rowdy, raging guitar riffs from the likes of Pepper Keenan or Jeff Loomis. There are no ultra-funky looped drum beats, booming bass, or rapped socio-political venom from the likes of the Ice Cube or Public Enemy. There is neither a Cecilia Bartoli nor a BB King to sustain things by sheer virtuosity. There are only the exquisitely simple, melodic sounds of monks singing/chanting in Latin in a great, grand hall with nary a trace of echo to be heard. This is gorgeous, sublime, invigorating music to soothe the sores of the soul and heal the hardened heart. The raw honesty and utter conviction of the `performers' on these two discs drive these pieces home with a power that more practiced and polished performers dare not dream of. Even with no transcription or translation of the chants inside the booklet, this is music to be enjoyed by everyone.
My recommendation is to procure Chant: The Anniversary Edition immediately and be thankful that such simple and supremely powerful music exists to bring some light into our seemingly ever-darkening world.
Thanks for reading.

Ahh, Florence!!.......2002-10-14
I love medieval and renaissance music. They are the "roots" of the great classics centuries later. One does not cultivate a complete education of art by studying only such Masters as Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali etc. So it is with fine music.
These CD's contain examples of Florentine musical composition from the 1300's and 1500's. The first CD, performed by David Munrow and the Early Music Consort, covers compositions from the 1300's, with many of the works of Francesco Landini, the most prolific Florentine composer of this period. The second covers music from the 1500's and is performed by John Beckett and the Musica Reservata. Here we can see the early development of both symphonic structure and opera.
Both discs are wonderful examples of different periods in the history of musical development, and performed by different conductors and artists. Therefore a comparison between the two is unfair and misplaced. David Munrow and the Early Music Consort are superb, as I have always found them to be, and John Beckett and the Musica Reservata are equally enjoyable.
If you appreciate early music you will find this recording to be a fantastic addition to your collection, and perhaps the definitive collection of early Italian music. If you are unfamiliar with early music or with Italian Renaissance music then these CD's would be a wonderful introduction.

Explorations in the early Middle Ages.......2006-01-17
This record provides early examples of polyphony in France, showing examples of the transition to the monody to one, two and then many simultaneous voices. Dominique Vellard, conductor of the ensemble, is a scholar-performer in medieval music, and works at the Center for Medieval Music in Paris. The performance and recordings are first-rate. If you care about medieval music, this record is a must-have.

Amazon.com essential recording
The program is a selection of chant and polyphony taken from a fascinating 12th-century manuscript that includes not only music but also sermons, stories, legends, and "an informative travel guide to the pilgrimage routes through France and Spain." The collection originated in France, but since the late 12th century it has resided in the famed Cathedral of Santiago in Compostela, Spain. In a purely vocal sense, these performances are transcendent: impeccable intonation, no false turns or failed leaps, and an ethereal ambience that is hard to describe with mere words. Musically, this recording features some of Anonymous 4's most engaging repertoire. No matter how many Anonymous 4/medieval music recordings you already own, these four women will still manage to keep you transfixed throughout, bringing you awesomely close to the spiritual essence of these impassioned yet often simple works of religious devotion. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:
Great, as usual........2005-11-12
While the location is Spanish, virtually all the texts are in Latin, and practically all are in plainsong, with very little polyphony. So, if it is the multipart singing you like, this may not have as much as you would like to hear.
I have been listening to Anonymous 4 recordings for about 10 years now, but my reviewing the titles in my colleciton brings be to the conclusion that unless you are a big fan of Medieval music, you may want to pass on this particular title and go for the masses such as 'A Lammas Ladymass' or the collections of secular motets such as 'Love's Illusion'.
But, If you really like this stuff as I do, this is as good as it gets in the relatively uniform Anonymous 4 body of work.
Miraculous music.......2005-10-12
Much of this music comes from a book that has survived from the Cathedral of Santiago. Much of the music contained in that book is plainchant, with the rest polyphonic works. There are some pieces that are liturgical, and others that are sacred or so inspired, but not strictly liturgical in nature.
The compositions show somewhat of the international nature of Christendom of the time - despite being in Santiago and used by the Spanish church, much of the composition was done by French clerics and writers, written in Cluny.
According to Susan Hellauer, 'As our guiding principle we have tried to be true to the infectiously joyful and exuberant melody that pervades this remarkable collection, made for and performed by the young treble voices of a medieval French grammar school.'
The blend of voices here is superb, and the spirit is soaring in many respects. As a friend of mine and I listened to this disc last night, she remarked on one of the songs, 'That's a merry little piece!' It is remarkable to listen to the voices of women singing this music, a different feel indeed from the monks or men and boys choirs that are more standard fare.
-- Liner Notes --
This text accompaniment to this disc is very. The liner notes include a description of the work, a brief piece about the quartet, and the lyrics of the songs both in original language and in translation. The cover art features images of St. James, and there is a reprint of a page from the Codex Calixtinus inside, as well as a plate from the Forster Book of Hours.
-- Anonymous 4 --
Contrary to the implication of their name, the Anonymous 4 are not anonymous. This is a vocal quartet made up of Ruth Cunningham, Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, and Johanna Rose at the time of this recording (Ruth Cunningham will later go on to a solo career early, and another member will join - Jacqueline Horner). They came together as a formal group in 1986, and have been ensemble-in-residence at St. Michael's Church in New York City, giving concert series in New York as well as throughout North America. They have been featured a number of times on national media in North America as well as Germany. They then went on to yet more success, eventually performing more that 1000 concerts worldwide.
Their specialty is working with chant, monophonic and polyphonic music, and working with medieval texts. According to one source, 'The group takes its name from an anonymous music theorist of the late 13th century, Anonymous IV, who is the principal source on the two famous composers of the Notre Dame school, Léonin and Pérotin.'
The group ended a touring career of nearly two decades in 2004.

A real miracle.......2001-04-19
In "Miracles of Santiago", the performers almost reach a level of divine perfection, guiding the listener to a state of pure spiritual peace, carrying him to an era where our western cultural heritage dives some of her deepest roots.

Album Description
From Silence to Light is an album of Gregorian chants that gathers together recordings from four renowned choirs of Benedictine Monks: Santo Domingo de Silos Abbey Choir, Saint-Wandrille Abbey Choir, Notre Dame de Ganagobie Abbey Choir, and Saint-Madeleine du Barroux Abbey Choir. The album features some of the most popular Gregorian works, such as the magnificent Messe Des Anges, the beautiful Easter chant Salve Festa Dies, the moving Salve Regina, and the universal Veni Creator. The performances by these choirs perpetuates the tradition of a chant both rhythmic and expressive, as enlightened by the power of the faith.Pop Music:
