Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Good job.......2005-08-26
I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.
Masterful!.......2005-06-15
This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.
Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07
I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Customer Reviews:
Great Music!.......2007-04-04
A wonderful collection of tradional songs, plus some new songs. Superb singing, fiddle, and bagpipes. Highly recommended.
Great tunes, depressing songs.......2007-03-26
I was quite disappointed in the songs on this album. I'm used to the band giving me a mix of traditional Scottish and Irish songs, along with some great tunes. Well the tunes are here and they're wonderful altho a bit lacking on the 'pipes. The songs on the other hand are uniformly depressing. Way too political for my taste. Every one is a protest song of some sort, lamenting every thing from slavery to the Iraq war. Now I don't mind a song or two like that per album but this is way too much. I hope the band got all the politic out of their system with this one and can get back to the basics with the next one.
Sad but Beautiful.......2007-02-10
There is a lot of happy and danceable irish music but the Battlefield Band chose to make this album much slower and sadder. It is an absolutely beautiful album but don't play it if your depressed.
Having said that, I loved the album.
Still going strong after all these years........2006-11-06
My wife and I have been Ethnic music fans for fifteen years, and the last five or so have been heavily Celtic. The Battlefield Band has been amoung our favortes especially ever since we saw them live in 1991 soon after John McCusker and Iain MacDonald joined them. After many more years and lineup changes they have returned with great Scottish/Celtic music once again. The only complaint on this new album, Road of Tears, is the lack of Bagpipes. They have a great player in Mike Katz, but the piping is sparse on this album. The highlight without question is the beautiful Alan Reid penned title track, The Road of Tears. The Emigrant and Burns Slaves Lament are also great. Overall it is a good album and I look forward to even more great music from them in the future, though I hope with a little more piping like they used to have. Thanks much for their many years of SCOTTISH MUSIC, as well as the Irish, English, and such that keeps them fresh in all Celtic music. I only wish some reviewers would not write such bad things about any group, especially when the reviewer is not even aware that the group they are talking about is not Irish but Scottish. I like many types of Celtic music as my wife is Scottish/Irish.
Duane.

Customer Reviews:
Some of the Best in Scottish folk.......2007-04-23
An excellent introduction to the Battlefield Band, one of if not the premier Scottish folk groups. You can't go wrong here. And for those Irish folk music fans out there who might be put off by a previous reviewers claim that there is a vast difference between the two folk traditions, please give this album a try. You'll find much that you will like. To begin with, the various incarnations of the Battlefield Band have included Irish players and singers (Pat Kilbride comes to mind), and have included many Irish tunes and songs. Scottish and Irish music, owing to deep geographical, cultural, and historical ties, have always cross pollinated each other. There is an enormous body of song and melody, usually under variant titles, that both cultures hold in common. There are certainly distinct regional and national differences, which keeps the music interesting and vibrant, but even these do not produce any kind of hard and fast musical paradigm. The fiddle playing style of Donegal, for instance, is heavily influenced by the Scottish musical tradition, and embraces such manifestly Scottish musical forms as the strathspey and reel. Give Altan a listen to hear what I mean. Modern Scottish and Irish folk groups has done nothing if not accelerate this appreciation and assimilation of each others music. Try to find an album by any Celtic band you can think of that does not include at least some of both countries music. You'll discover that it is a difficult task. The place to start, of course, is with this album. Pick out the differences and similarities for yourself. It will be a rewarding process.
Great retrospective of one of Scotland's most enduring traditional music groups.......2006-11-05
For those who know Battlefield Band, this is a wonderful compilation
of some of their best music. For those who do not know the band, this
is a fabulous introduction, not only to Battlefield Band themselves
but to Scottish traditional and traditional-style music. Battlefield
Band were pioneers in the use of the great highland bagpipe in
ensemble play and this compilation showcases the great pipers that
have played with the band over the years.
Classic Scottish Folk - Nothing New for Long Time Fans.......2005-08-18
The Battlefield Band is one of the finest, and perhaps most authentic of the Scottish folk groups that is recording today.
Perhaps the initial reveiwer of this work, X-Man, does not understand that Battlefield Band is NOT an Irish group, and there is a vast, vast difference between Irish folk music and Scottish folk music. Not only are they from two different cultures, but the instruments and playing styles are completely different. To compare Battlefield Band to the Chieftans is like comparing a Porche Carerra and a Boxter - there maybe a superficial resemblance, but under the hood, the engines are completely different.
This collection is weak in a number of areas- favoring the instrumental pieces over the songs, and is missing some of my personal favorites, such as "The Snows of France & Holland," "I Am the Common Man," the haunting cover version of Sting's "We Work the Black Seam," as well as the anthem to Scottish liberty - "Montrose".
All in all, though - a good introduction to the group, but not worth buying if you've already got most of the discography - which can be said for any long-range retrospective album.
What a bunch of FREAKS........2005-05-13
Traditional Irish folk music gets spazmolagized again.
I long for the days of the 1970's and 80's when De Dannan, Planxty, The Bothy Band, The Furey Brothers (aka The Buskers), Boys of the Lough, Wolfe Tones, Davy Arthur, Danny Doyle, Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners, etc. blessed the world with the most beautiful of traditional Irish folk music in its purest form.
Anyone loony enough to have the unmitigated gall to refer to this pile of bandicoot barf and epileptic caterwauling as Irish music - much less even liking it - would have to be a freaking retard with an IQ of somewhere below -74 with a bib around their neck to catch the drool.
Too short.......2004-01-24
A good compilation, but a better one would have been 2 CDs long (at least). Another flaw is the accompanying notes, in which the solo singers and instrumentalists for each track are not identified.

The Defining Album.......2006-10-19
This is their most listenable disk, the best blend of instrumental fireworks with evocative lyrics. With Leaving Friday Harbor, The Battlefield Band has joined the ranks of artists who epitomize their genre: Placido Domingo, Charlie Parker, Thomas Mapfuno, Cesaria Evora; Quartetto Italiano, Les Arts Florissants, Concerto Palatino; The Chieftans, Vasen, The Beach Boys. This is not music for a niche audience; this is world-class music for all music-lovers.
Delightful.......2003-03-30
I first heard the Battlefield Band on a Prairie Home Companion and bought this CD based on the one or two songs I'd heard on the program. I was not at all disappointed. Ever song is lovely.
Just Fantastic.......2001-08-31
I saw the Battlefield Band in Michigan right around the time LFH was released and it was one of the most fantastic shows I ever seen. If you get a chance to see them drop everything you are doing and GO!!!!! you will remember the experience forever.
Not much to say about the album because it is just awesome. To have such great musicians playing on a record with no friction or highlighting of just one person is a real treat.
If you know the BB and are thinking about buying this album then just do it dummy! If you are new to the BB and are considering buying it I can only recommend it totally. If you like the thought of folk music, braveheart, and your typical renassiance/medieval festival rolled into one then this is for you!
Neil C. Womelduff: Iron Breugh Band Kansas City Missouri.......2000-03-25
"Leaving Friday Harbor" is an excellent example of Scottish Celtic Music today. It really captures the spirit of the group's live performances. The Four current members seem to have a real chemistry with each other which comes out in "Leaving Friday Harbor" and in their live performances. They are probably the best combination since the group was formed over thirty years ago which really says a lot considering the amount of world class musicians that the band has seen come and go. I also would consider them one of the best Celtic Bands in existance. In one of their very memorable live performances, I was impressed to see the members passing they're instruments back and forth to one-another on stage. One of the highlights of the evening was when Mike Katz pulled a penny whistle from Steele's pocket while he was playing. The same laid-back attitude comes through in "Leaving Friday Harbor" which makes it even more spectacular. It was also amusing when they started a set, screwed up and started it over again with a very professional, showman like attitude. They are truly talented people and you won't be disappointed in "Leaving Friday Harbor". If you enjoy this album you will also enjoy the other titles from The Battlefield Band, The Tannahill Weavers, Silly Wizard and The Chieftains.
Great album from a great band.......2000-01-11
The present formation (Steele, Katz, Reid and McCusker) is perhaps the best of this long time band. The members feel comfortable with the others and that can be seen perfectly in the different types of tunes they play. Here you will find that you have four composers, each one with it's own style, and that the four integrate their tunes in a one major structure, that is the whole album. Leaving Friday Harbor is at times calm ("Logie O'Buchan" is a good example) and at others is quite powerful (like "Clan Coco") like they have always done but with more assurance than ever. Defenetly a great cd. Buy it. You will not be dissapointed.

Pretty good.......2005-07-01
This CD has it's ups and downs as most CDs do. The ups are, as usual for the BB, very good instrumentals and arousing vocals (they bring out the Gael in you). "The Earl of Errol" is very Celtic and very well done; I can listen to it over and over again (though the subject matter is not altogether preferable). However, this CD would have been an easy five-star if they had left out "Belfast to Boston," which was yet another attempt at quaint modernity (it simply doesn't work guys) by yet another supposedly Celtic band (when I want Celtic music, I want Celtic music, not ANYTHING to do with Boston, NY, etc.), as well as "Lord Randall," which is very tiresome and repetitive, and "King's Schilling" which is a stereotypically PC song (why do they call themselves the Batlefield Band?). Although my review may seem harsh, this CD is worth buying, "Carron Water" is excellent, "The Earl of Errol" is thrilling, and most all of the numerous instrumentals are very fine, and counteract the PC and stinker songs without too much trouble.
True Scots.......2005-04-21
This album sees the band at the top of their form with Mike Katz on pipes, Pat Kilbride on guitar and vocals, Alan Reid on keyboards and Alasdair White on fiddle and mandolin. Spirited playing and singing with a variety of songs and tunes new and old from slow airs to high energy medleys, characterise this fine album. There's also three live tracks from their UK 2002 tour.
Plenty of great tunes to rave about: Seudan A'Chuain by Allan MacDonald, The Road to Benderloch by Angus McColl, John Sheahan's lovely slow air Christ Church, named for Dublin's protestant cathedral and traditional favourites like An Cota Ruadh, McKenna's Jig and Lord Randall. Mike Katz's own tunes are excellent too: Barbhas agus Butthead, Trouble at Baghdad Roundabout, Clan Coco and Fifteen Stubbies to Warragul, while Alan Reid's slow air Rest and Be Thankful is just divine.
A fine feast of Scottish music that comes highly recommended.

On this live album, the Battlefield Band is joined by five different guests. Recorded during three concerts at Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, the album features a generous helping of 28 different songs and instrumental dance tunes, but the highlights occur when the guests visit the band on stage. Eric Rigler, a Californian featured on the "Braveheart" soundtrack, plays the smaller, sweeter uillean pipes in harmony and counterpoint with Iain MacDonald's bagpipes on two songs and three tunes. Alison Kinnaird, a frequent collaborator in the past, joins the Battlefield Band again to add her Scottish harp and arrangement to the traditional air, "Tuireadh Iain Ruaidh." Flutist Seamus Tansey adds an Irish flavor on two tunes cowritten with MacDonald. And the Battlefield Band joins Glasgow's Radio Sweethearts for a version of Dave Dudley's truck-driving classic, "Six Days on the Road." --Geoffrey Himes

Mellow, Gentle, and Excellent.......2002-06-17
I found out about the Battlefield Band by doing a random search on Amazon. And this was their first album I bought -- for no particular reason. It was an excellent choice. It's not as energetic as some of their other work, as they use mostly the fiddle, whistles, and even a harp on slow, soothing songs. The pace does pick up, however, with the last four pieces.
My personal favorites are #1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12 - 15. Track 14 was quite an unexpected treat. It starts off in the traditional country style, but after about 3 minutes it goes Scottish country. I love the bluegrass bagpipes!
This album is a great introduction to the band with music that will never get old. It's not quite representative of their current style, but it is no doubt worth buying.
magnificent.......1998-09-22
This cd was my first full introduction to Battlefield Band, and man-alive, I was hooked within a couple of minutes. Deeply rooted in Scottish tradition (and Irish, as well), the lads even manage to do an American country standard better than the original. This record shows the band's energy and strengths in marvelous fashion and ends it all with the rousing Top Tier set. Amazing.
Traditional Celtic music mixed with modern technology.......1998-06-20
As an avid fan of the group for the past 17 yrs, I've seen them transition through different members, but still keeping alive their particular style and flavor. This is the last recording of the group before another major transition took place and is an excellent example of their ability to combine traditional music with modern technology.

In the 25 years since the release of its first album, the Battlefield Band has become something of a Scottish Celtic music institution. It's also undergone as many personnel changes as Spinal Tap. Time & Tide showcases yet another new lineup, with the sole remaining original member, keyboardist-accordionist Alan Reid, joined by guitarist Pat Kilbride, bagpiper Mike Katz, and fiddler player Alasdair White. However, it's such a seamless, enchanting disc of traditional Scottish music that you'd never know this was the quartet's first album together. The disc starts--as most Battlefield Band albums do--with a rollicking instrumental medley that neatly joins the traditional "Chuir I Gluin Air a Bhodach (She Put a Knee in the Old Man)" with three original compositions. From there, the band's mix of freshly arranged versions of traditional Celtic melodies with original compositions succeeds once again in showing respect for the Celtic tradition without turning the music into a museum piece. Indeed, the greatest joy of Time & Tide is how fresh the band sounds. Even a centuries-old classic like "Nancy's Whiskey" is given a lively new spin in Reid's arrangement. The other highlights here--like White's gorgeous fiddle work on the title track, the odd-metered and musically impressive "Banais Choinnich" (Kenneth's Wedding), and Katz's phenomenal bagpiping on "MacFarlane's Rant"--emphasize that, while the lineup may shift over time, the Battlefield Band hasn't lost its touch. --Ezra Gale

OK - so I am an addict.......2002-12-10
For those who are new to the Battlefield Band and wondering - This is a great representative selection of what this band is about - furthering Scotch folk music while recognizing the traditions. Just try it and see - and if you don't like this then perhaps think twice about other Scotch folk because this represents great modern tradition. If you want older tradition then try their 1977 album "The Battlefield Band" because they used to play the older stuff too - then go try the other 15 albums in between and you will get introduced to the great growth of a modern tradition. Your purchase of the 2002 Time and Tide might then grow back on you!
For existing fans - Just saw their last gig of the 2002 tour of USA last night. They played most of this album and were tight and the usual TOTALLY crafted musicians. Sounds like I got a better night than the reviewer who saw them on a hot 9th July! Alasdair is a real asset on fiddle offering wonderful bowing with fresh perspectives with runs back into traditional sequences - He also plays bouzourki, whistles and GHBpipes too! As they meld on in their (now 25 year) existence the sleeve notes gleefully note - the band has been around longer than some of the present and past members! So for those used to them transmogifying their way along - this is a good one - go get it!
At Their Best!.......2002-10-09
Other reviewers have already raved about this new Battlefield Band album. I'll simply reaffirm their recommendation. Time & Tide ranks close to Leaving Friday Harbor in its instrumental virtuosity. The song texts are perhaps a little less special than those of LFH, but the use of two male singers, each with his own emotional timbre, lends the album a lot of variety. No other group achieves such subtlety with pub songs and work ballads.
Time & Tide was Terrific.......2002-09-29
We just received this new BB CD and it is terrific. Their Soundman, Rob Van Sante, has done a remarkable job to produce twelve well balanced tracks. Your reviewer is right on; describing another new lineup but the same fabulous quality to which we've become accustomed. Pat Kilbride returns to the Battys with two great numbers (Camden Town and Whiskey). Alasdair White is the newest member and shows off his melodic fiddling as well as several of his own tunes. Alan Reid continues to impress followers of the group with his beautiful voice, rich keyboard sound, and new delightful songs with every new CD. Mike Katz continues to amaze us all with his brisk, rapid, and clear piping. His whistle playing continues to improve and a couple of tunes are chilling with chords of several whistles. Truly a fun, well balance, worthwhile album. Enjoy!
New CD, new mark of excellence!.......2002-09-28
I found out B.B. was going to release this CD about four months ago and have since been waiting with great anticipation. And even though UPS tried to crush my package during shipment, I got my copy a few hours ago and have since been relishing the audio joy. First, let me assure everyone that the Band has delivered greatness once again. It's new and old, different but the same all at once. This CD seems tighter and the songs are faster than the past couple releases; The softer element, as presented in "Happy Daze", has been mostly cleared for this sharper edge. Every member performs flawlessly, but the one that stands out most to me is Alasdair (and I'm a bagpipe addict!). Speaking of which, I wish Mike had more [bagpipe] solos! Lastly, let me note that if you've seen the band perform recently you've probably already heard many of these songs. I saw them in Leesburg, VA on 9 June and they played a bunch of new songs. Then, upon my first listening of the CD, I wondered why they seemed vaguely familiar; I think they sound better on the CD than they did on that hot day in June, fortunately.
So, the set goes like this...
Track 1 is your typical rollicking launch song meant to snatch your attention. Everyone gets their part in, as well as the necessary group action. I listened to the MP3 [on Temple's Web site] a couple times and even that doesn't sound as good as the CD cut.
#2 is about a weaver in Ayrshire who overindulges in a certain beverage. It's a good little song from Alan.
#3 is one of the better tracks, I believe. The title is quirky but the song/medley is superb. This is one track where, if you are not already in awe of Alasdair's talent, you soon will be.
#4 is sung by Pat, whose voice I don't enjoy quite as much as Alan's, but whom can still sculpt a good song.
#5 starts off with some whistles, then brings in Alasdair, then Mike on bagpipes. It's somewhat fast, and will definitely have you tapping your desk.
#6 is a slower one from Alasdair, written with the spirit of his hometown.
#7... I didn't warm up to this one much when I heard it live, but here it's pretty snappy. It's about a famous steamer ship that Alan rode and fell in love with when he was young.
#8 has another strange title, but again the song itself is excellent. It begins with Pat then soon incorporates Alasdair; the next bit is a little better, and the last bit better yet. Would make fine accompaniment for coffee in the morning.
#9 is probably the one I'd pick as my "least favorite", I suppose. Not that it's bad whatsoever, it just sticks out against the other more upbeat tunes.
#10 begins with a nice little piece from Alasdair, then moves into one of Mike's few solo bits, and finishes with a cool bit with the whole line-up with Mike leading the way.
#11... okay, here's another slow one -- as one may assume from the title. Excellent bedtime / meditative / soothing stuff.
#12 wraps up the album in a good way. What's funny about this song is that Pat sounds like a Irish Randy Newman (and yes, he's Irish, not Scottish). It's a good flowing song. The instrumental bit (the last minute) puts Alasdair at the forefront again to leave you with a delightful tune bouncing around in your head as you go on about your day.
Ultimately, I place this album in the ranks as one of the Band's best -- and I say that trying to be as critical as possible. The songs are good, original (everyone has contributed at least one piece, and even the adopted songs feature an original slant), and will get your feet moving -- if not everything else. The playing is crisp in every aspect and fiddle afficionados, in particular, will be catapulted into bliss. This album is on par with "Happy Daze" (formerly my solid favorite), but they are notably different albums, so it's difficult (and unfair) to compare them beyond a general sense. Anyway, give your ears a gift and pick this one up!
Still Going Strong!.......2002-09-26
Despite undergoing yet another reincarnation, Battlefield Band continues to move forward in traditional (and sometimes not so traditional!) Scottish music. Whether they are playing the old, traditional tunes or their own original tunes, finding different adaptation of old songs ("Nancy's Whiskey"), or performing their own original songs ("The Bonny Jeannie Deans"), Battlefield Band continues to be at the forefront of Scottish traditional groups. The music of this band changes and grows each time the band grows and changes, and this album is no different: once again, they are exploring what it means to play the music as well as what it means to be Battlefield Band, and doing it a way that leaves their music truly accessible to all comers.
From the contemplative "Time and Tide" to the near frenetic "The Walking Nightmare" to the just plain fun "Whisky from the Field", the band, with their varied instrumentations, shows exactly what it takes to be successful: a true love and devotion to the music. It is apparent that the band truly loves what they are doing and are having FUN. Too many groups have pigeonholed themselves into a specific genre, and while Battlefield is definitely true to tradition, they are not afraid to move past some of those artificial boundaries and explore the music for the music's sake.
"Time & Tide" makes an excellent first Battlefield Band CD for someone who has never heard the group before. It also makes a great addition to anyone's current Battlefield Band collection.
