Moving to the Four Corners area has obviously opened a font of inspiration for John Huling, who adds to his cornucopia of self-produced albums (now numbering five) in his Musical Visions of the Southwest series with Return to Spiritlands. Here the journey continues, back to the heart of music's origins as an attempt to capture, mirror, and give pattern to the awesome beauty of sounds from the natural world. As in Spiritlands--and in the other albums of the series--Return features absorbing and atmospheric collages of ceremonial Native American drums, flutes (with especially beautiful, warm vibrato in the solo "Canyon"), ambient vocals, and natural "found" music, such as falling rain and bird calls. The 10 songs here follow a compelling progression, but they are also highly effective separately in setting a mood or calling up one's own personal landscape. The blend of nature sounds with the ceremonial drums conjures a vital sense of connectedness--particularly in the title track--that is truly centering. --Tom May

Native American flutes, Indian drums, Nature sounds and a host of other instruments round out these beautifully inspired "musical stories." This is John Huling's fifth album from his hugely successful "Musical Visions of the Southwest" series. These "musical stories" reflect the beauty and grandeur of the southwest like no other music you have ever heard. Whispering winds, gentle rains, distant thunder, babbling brooks, birds, coyotes and other animals murmur in the distance as you journey back again and again in "Return to Spiritlands."
