I bought this for my sister for xmas and she loves it.

3 out of 5 stars Best of Bellydance from Egypt, Lebanon, Arabia, and Turkey.......2005-07-21

It is good and I like it but I am new to Belly danceing and found the music a bit to fast for me. I would say that this music would be for those more experienced at the art.

4 out of 5 stars Varied & Diverse Although Often with an "Orchestrated' Sound.......2004-04-04

This CD is a good start for listeners unfamiliar with the diversity of unique music and instruments from the Middle East and Arabia. The first six tracks are the most appealing as the music of each country, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, and Arabia is presented. One can develop an appreciation and taste for the 'belly dance' rhythm, unique progression of musical paths, and traditional instruments, that compose this most outstanding and easily recognizable genre of music (and dance). While the music is "contemporary" it is also at times, highly orchestrated. Luckily this occurs mostly in *only* the last 6 tracks. The first 6 selections have an interesting introduction before the primary music is played, it begins with either a dumbek or kanun or tanbur (tambur, lute-like instrument) which teases the listener, knowing full well, it is an 'appetizer' before a sumptious musical feast. Most of the selections include very dramatic and captivating improvisations on *traditional* instruments, such as the ney, the kanun, or the violin. One is *easily* drawn into this sensuous and delightful music by the introduciton which, at times, is markedly different than the main musical melody. There is a musical transition musical to most of the selections that is smooth and very intense . The dumbek or other traditional instrument often defines the "raks araby" (Greek "tsitetelli", i.e. 'belly dance') styled rhythm although there are tracks when it is the lute or kanun which defines the rhythm.

The most outstanding piece on the CD is track #1, "Aziza" (Arabia) played by Hosssam Ramzy and his orchestra. It is exotic and has jazz-like improvisations on the ney, violin, and kanun which capture the sounds, sights, and smells of the souk and casbah. You *know* you have arrived into another world of music ... Track #2 "Dert Ortagim Benim", is Turkish and played by Ensemble Huseyn Turkmenler. It begins with a dumbek intro that is soon accompanied by traditional instruments, the ney, lute, kanun, and violin. Together these instruments create a dynamic melody and rhythm that captivates the listener. Eventually each instrument, ney, kanun, lute, and violin is provided a solo opportunity to shine, to stand out, to be heard when it is played by a virtuoso, who demonstrates jazz-like improvisaitons and explores the full depth and breadth of musical possibilies on a solo instrument. #4 "Ghannili Sheway Sheway" by Hossam Ramzy and orchestra create a sensational sound, played on the ney, kanun, violin, lute, and keyboards ... this one creates labyrinthine musical pathways with unusual twists, turns, and curves. Hossam Ramzy is a master musician, world reknown for his creativity and stylizations of the Middle Eastern sound. #5 is translated as "Happiness" ("Saiedeh"). The music has Arabic influences, played on a violin or cello-like instrument, there are occasionally keyboards. The end is especially explosive with "ullalations", high-pitched vocalizations often done by women with the tongue against the pallate but can done by men also, during times of intense joy, happiness and unexpected pleasure. #6 sounds Egyptian due to the frequent dumbek rhythm, although somewhat orchestrated, they music retains the original flavor and ambience of Arabic music.
Overall, this CD contains a wide variety of exemplary belly dance music, although it slightly disappoints due to orchestration, when traditional instruments would be preferable. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5 out of 5 stars Mystirious Passionate Musique !!.......2003-05-01

I love this ablum very much !
It is not too noisy , too hard beat as some Belly Dance albums, but enjoyable groove floting in the air. Some fast and dance-able mixed with some groovy quite songs. Never too excited while not sleepy as some ethical albums.

Track 8: "Gazal", composed and performed by Essam Rashad, is a beautiful track which had appeared in Natacha Atlas's debut album, but differnet version. Natacha's version has some chant, but here is a pure instrumental version which leads us into the stary desert .......

Buy it !! It is low price now and it actually worth twice of it's price !!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Transporting Trance Ambient Music.......2007-05-04

This is beautiful ambient trance music, dont agree at all with the reviewer from Peking, China.
I use this as background music for healing therapies and people love it.
Not just for mystics or muslims.1961

5 out of 5 stars The Inessential Is Stripped Away.......2007-04-10

In our culture, which is so overloaded with junk noise, we have forgotten how much emotion the unaccompanied human voice can convey. Everything inessential is stripped away on this CD; there's a lot of silence on it, thank God, which leaves room for us to experience the power of these voices. The first track alone is worth twice the price.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely not for New Age ambiance seekers.......2003-11-13

This is very austere Muslim chant. Unless you really appreciate such singing, refrain from buying this cd. I think only deep faith could make it bearable for Western ears.

4 out of 5 stars Intense and full of rapture for all ages.......2002-12-31

It is relatively easy for adults to have an appreciation for this form of dhikr(remembrance); what is interesting is that since receiving it, the melodies within this CD were so enchanting that my 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter have been sneaking it away to their room to listen to it on their own. An incredible experience, really, because obviously even children can recognize when people make incantations that are honest and from within one's soul.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellence is a virtue.......2001-05-27

This is an excellent CD. The highest production values were maintained throughout. From the adhan to the end of the CD, I was enthralled. The reciter is obviously well trained and inspired. This CD has absolutely no weaknesses. Everyone interested in the traditions of Islamic mysticism will be thrilled to own this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Sick second Part........2007-03-28

    Yo.
Freak Scene, the first part of this album (First 11 tracks or so...is take it or leave it.)
The Devil's Anvil could be one of the sweetest albums of all time. I guess it's the guitar palyer from Mountian. I think I read that somewhere. Anyways. These songs just flat out rip or are nice and mellow in a beautiful way. Played this for my friends and they all went out and bought it. The Devil's Anvil is essential. Yeah. They were from NYC, but this sound is global. It holds up aganist Erkin Koray's best. You will play the second part of this album constantly. Especially in summer. These songs sound sweet booming out of you windows...children, old people, people stop and can't beleive the sweetness. Just soaking it all in. I"m gonna go put it on right now.

1 out of 5 stars Total exploitation garbage.......2004-11-09

This music had zero credibility in 1967. It sounds like record company executives hired some studio hacks to emulate "psychedelic" music. Total crap, utterly without value.

5 out of 5 stars Take a trip with this music.......2001-12-27

What a great value this CD is! You get two RARE 60's records on one disc. (Both were released in 1967). This is some of the coolest psychedelic music I have ever heard. "The freak Scene" is amazing stuff. I mean songs titles like 'Draft Beer, not Students" - how cool is that? Great trippy sounding tribal reverberated drums and guitars are throughout the album. Nice vocal effects, too..........

And now on to the Devil's Anvil- This record is very unusual! It has middle eastern vocal melodies and instramentation mixed with 60's heavy blues/psychedelia. The band features Felix Pappalardi on bass (of Cream & Mountain fame). One thing to note: The lyrics are evidently sung in arabic, but this fact does not have an effect to detract from the music's compelling sounds in the least bit. One noteworthy track is the interesting cover of "Miserlou", featuring lead vocals (in english) by Felix Pappalardi.

Do yourself a favor and check out these long since out of print recordings while they are still availible on CD!

This CD represents authentic sounds of the real Egypt! From the sounds of the streets of Luxor to the haunting melody of the rebaba, this is an excellent choice in the real sounds of Upper Egypt. A must for your collection if you want to hear authentic Egyptian music!

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounds of Traditional Egypt!.......1999-04-26

If you have ever visited Upper Egypt and experienced the wonderful music created by the local musicians, then this is the CD for you. I have been searching for traditional music of the Upper Egypt area and finally found it. From the opening sounds of the horse and buggy and street sounds in Luxor to the haunting and melodic sounds of the rababah to the beat of the tablah, it is a wonderful collection of songs. I have visited Upper Egypt twice and had the great opportunity to hear these musicians in person. This CD brought back great memories of that experience in sound!! A must for your collection and I highly recommend it. I hope to find more like it!

The modern-day traditional Jewish music revival is filled with artists exploring klezmer's Eastern-European roots, but you'll hear no clarinet and little violin on cantor/educator Richard Kaplan's Life Of The Worlds. Although these are traditional songs, there is a broad range of the Diaspora represented on his second album, including Afghani, Spanish, Moroccan, and Algerian traditions. Kaplan dives into the sacred and the secular, the prophetic and the exultant, finding commonalities amongst different tribes and fusing them together. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of an occasional flute, piano, and violin as well as Moroccan clay drums, oud, dumbek, and other pre-modern-era instruments, but the instrument at the center of each song is Kaplan's voice--his high baritone majestically soars, quavers with sensitivity, and rings out with joy. To hear him sing solo versions of traditional Niggiun is to hear a world-class master savor the multifaceted nuance of each note and transcend the concept of song, turning it into religion and high art. --Tad Hendrickson

        Album Description

A remarkable collection of vocal performances of Jewish sacred music from the Middle East, Andalusia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia - songs of exultation, longing, love, and Divine immanence - accompanied by an ensemble of masterful musicians.

Instruments include: oud, ney, kanun, Egyptian accordian, violin, mandolin, dumbek, doira, riqq, Yemenite can, tar, saz, clarinet, mey (Turkish duduk), tilinca (Rumanian shepherd's flute), piano, string bass, balaban (Klezmer drum set), cimbalom, and a chorus of voices.

Among many special songs, the CD features an 'eco-lament' (ecological lament) based on lament melodies for the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It is called "Lament on the Destruction of the Garden of Eden" (Kinah Lekhurban Gan Eden), and updates the use of these tunes to mourn the wounding of our larger temple, Gaia - Mother Earth.

LIFE OF THE WORLDS contains 18 songs, 77 minutes of music, and contains a 32-page booklet which includes informative song descriptions; all texts are provided in transliteration, English translation, and in Hebrew or Yiddish.

This CD was three years in the making, and presents the first recordings in North America of several songs from the treasure-chest of Jewish sacred music.

Eclecticism reigns supreme in the world of illbient. Raz Mesinai, Sub Dub's percussionist in residence, has put together a super-swingin' album. Featuring the sultry lyrical stylings of Honeychild, the album Bedouin Sound Clash wondrously whisks you away to expansive deserts of shifting sands to find yourself in one of the most relaxing and tantalizing musical oases you have ever happened across.

The use of Middle Eastern percussion instruments and samples, as well as Middle Eastern percussion patterns, serves Mesinai all the better when it comes to enthralling his audience. He also mixes in some reggae dubs, as on track three, "Pressurizor," beautifully complementing his percussion tracks. And one really has to credit him for bringing in a vocalist as talented as Honeychild. When listening to the album, one can not help but feel that the two musicians were made for one another. --Ryan Kuykendall

          Album Description

A highly experimental dub album that combines heavy reggae-influenced rhythms with Middle Eastern percussion, and the occasional striking female vocal (Honeychild). From Raz Mesinai, master dubber and percussionist, and one-half of Sub Dub. Bedouin Sound Clash was conceived and recorded in Raz's basement studio with a four track cassette recorder and a multivox echo chamber. Although the record utilizes a new style of dub, it preserves an organic feel with reggae rhythms, analog sounds, and Egyptian and Bedouin percussion.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Honeychild lifts this album up...........2006-12-02

There has been quite a buzz surrounding the re-release of this very worthy ten year old album.

Most of the music on the album features very reasonable but unremarkable UK sounding dubwise tracks -- but -- what makes this an indispensible, essential purchase is the enigmatic vocals on four of the tracks by the under recorded, under rated Honeychild.

She has a beautiful voice which, though not a conventional female roots voice, fits the mystery of this music -- perfectly. Listen to the cloudy, smoky paranoia of "Suspicion" with the drizzle of a rain storm and muted thunder rolls underlying the entire rhythm structure.

Listen to the backward tape loops of her voice on the disorienting "Lack Of Dub To The Brain" over a dense backdrop of muted, hushed spoken samples, flutes and cries -- and it's clear that this is an original contribution to the reggae music canon.

On the track "Snake Charmer" Honeychild's vocal is not as unique or impressive, sounding more like a conventional lover's rock chanteuse. Think UK lovers styles meets Ari Up's "Some Love". It is reasonable -- but ordinary in comparasion with her other intriguing and captivating vocals on this album.

Honeychild -- unquestionably --deserves her own album.

These four Honeychild tracks are, overwhelmingly, reminiscent of Rhythm and Sound music -- They feature that same "roll off" sub low bass rumble and hiss. In this case though, there is a psychedelic loneliness and melancholy in the vocals. This is eerie dubwise at its best.

Grab this while it lasts for the Honeychild tracks -- Don't wait for it to delete and then be re-issued ten years from now.

4 out of 5 stars middle eastern sounds and classic dub fusion.......2001-07-19

How can you not like a fusion of middle eastern drum sounds, hypnotic singing (Honey Child) and classic jamaican dub?

My coworkers and i have ripped this and listen to it almost daily. When I first heard it, i thought maybe it was a Scientist or King Tubby record. But then i noticed how dense the beats were. The production sounded more modern, the bass heavy, the drumming ethereal in the mix. Sampled vocals come and go in the mix, lending this dub a hypnotic middle-eastern flavor that is really unique.

i like, very much. If you dig dub, you'll dig this.

1 out of 5 stars Monotonous: no bedouin, no class.......2001-05-16

There is no lack of talent on Badawi's label, there is just a lack of inspiration. The monotonous sounds may provoke instances of bewildered gasps for air from the listener. When is it going to happen? Maybe that is Badawi's motivation? It left this reviewer wondering why he ever bothered listening to the entire album. Not recommended!
