This set is primarily for devoted fans of Beverly Sills, for fans of Sherrill Milnes in his prime, and for those who must have the uncut version where it's available. The estimable Ms. Sills was in less than ideal voice for the making of this recording, which is unfortunate, but the artistry still shines through. Mr. Milnes sings with rich tone. But Lorin Maazel's conducting is leaden and out of empathy with the score. --Sarah Bryan MillerCustomer Reviews:

AN UNDER-APPRECIATED GEM.......2004-12-03
Sills was past her prime when she recorded this, and her high notes are a little thin and sometimes wobbly. Nevertheless, her artistry is so great that she infuses the role of the courtesan with the tremendous drama the role requires. Thais' radical change of character, from the insouciant hedonist to the redeemed penitent, is gloriously demonstrated in Sills' portrayal.
And this opera is as much about Athanael as it is Thais. Milnes, at the height of his career when he recorded this in 1976, brings tremendous power and vitality to the role of the priest, whose reverse progression from moralistic religious surety to tortured doubt parallels that of Thais, the object of his forbidden love. Nicolai Gedda's singing is, as always, stylish and graceful, and Loren Maazel's reading of the score is well paced and forceful. This recording belongs in all opera collections.

Berlioz wrote very difficult music for the tenor voice, music which is not reminiscent of any other composer. The rhythms are unique, and the leaps to high notes are somewhat uncomfortable. Like other composers, he wrote for different types of tenors, from light and lyrical to the truly dramatic. Here Roberto Alagna, in possibly his finest recording, sings them all, from the delicate narrator in L'enfance du Christ and gentle poet Iopas in Les Troyens to the somewhat grander Benvenuto Cellini, and on finally to the Siegmund-like Aeneas. Each is imbued with true character, and Alagna's range cannot help but impress; he even sings the sweet, high C-sharps of the duet from La damnation de Faust with ease (his Marguerite is his wife, Angela Gheorghiu). Rarities here are a song sung by Mephistopheles in an earlier work based on Faust when the role was composed for tenor, and some music from the half-sung, half-spoken drama Lelio (the actor Gerard Depardieu is the speaker). This is a great collection, and it's Alagna at his most superb. A must for opera lovers of all tastes. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Bravo for Yu Qiang Dai.......2005-01-28
He still has to work his Italian (specially the consonants) and his French. But there were great historical tenors with bigger idiomatical problems.
Despite taking spinto repertoire, Yu never pushes, never tries to make the voice sound darker than it is, everything is always under control, and he takes the chance to give very stylish renditions (for example, of una furtiva lagrima), which is strange for tenors who "want to sing spinto".
The tenor is a fantastic discovery, one of the best ones around. Actually, all my criticism goes to EMI and the production of the CD: no choirs, no solists (for example, for the aria of Cavalleria, where the mother should sing her line), and the acoustic "atmosphere" has made some people to doubt if Yu's voice is really as big as it seems (people who saw his Cavaradossi at Covent Garden say that it is very big, actually).
Not a the best production job by the people of EMI, but five stars (ten if possible) for the singer. Simply wonderful.
EXQUISITE VOCAL MASTERPIECE~BRAVO ROBERTO!!! .......2004-11-23
fabulous French stylist.......2004-06-27
Roberto Alagna is a superb French stylist, as one would hope to find in a native Frenchman. Moreover, his voice is well-suited to the extremes of Berlioz' writing - it's not a huge voice, which is very much to his advantage, since he can control his piano singing and provide nuances that other singers don't. And unlike most French-style tenors, Alagna's voice has enough bottom weight and more than enough ping to avoid being too nasally or tweety. There's a lot of emotion in his work as well as intelligence, and I really like the way he shows us new ways of hearing... every singer's voice is individual, very different, and that's especially true of tenors - Alagna's not afraid to explore that. Berlioz is a great match for him. It's one of my favorite CDs.
What audacity!!!!!.......2004-05-27

Customer Reviews:
A first rate Puerto Rican tenor!.......2006-12-05
It is exactly that uniqueness of the bel canto approach that distinguishes Antonio Paoli and what may have contributed to his loss of popularity in the height of verismo. His tone is not always beautiful but it is never pushed - ever and it is one legato line. He does not obscure consonants to obtain legato like dramatics in our time. Words have less meaning in our time, which makes sense - expressive artists are generally not employed. Musically, he has an exciting way of creating tension in the line by raising the pitch by a quarter-tone or less, and attacking the notes before the beat on which they fall. He seems gifted to find those oppurtune places in the music.
His bel canto method does not prevent any dramatic use his voice, for even though minimal breath escapes in the line, his Pagliacci scenes (on this set) possess supreme accent of dramatic timing and a full exploitation of the chest vibrations which ring more than any singer I have heard. Once again, he possesses bel canto, dramatic, and rhythmic gifts, and here in lies Paoli's contribution, uniqueness, and genius. Paoli is probably the most underrated tenor I have encountered.
Yet, a strange tentative quality abides much of the time - the same one Rosa Ponselle battled with.
