Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was certainly one of the greatest singers of her own, or indeed any other time. An obsessive perfectionist, her flawless technique and intonation over a huge range, vocal flexibility, breath control, phrasing, stylistic versatility, and above all her focused, radiantly beautiful sound were matchless and incomparable. All these are on full display on this generous 2-CD set, which features over a dozen arias, songs by Schubert, Wolf and Richard Strauss, and some lighter fare. The recordings were made between 1950 and 1967, and the singing becomes better and better, the voice richer and more varied, the expression deeper and more immediate. Not surprisingly, the peaks come in the arias from her signature roles in Mozart's Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutte; Richard Strauss' Ariadne, Rosenkavalier, and Arabella, which rise to real ecstasy; and arias from Weber's Freischütz and Smetana's Bartered Bride, which are wonderfully intimate and touching. She is less convincing in roles she never sang on stage, and the "childish" voice she cultivated especially for Hänsel and Gretel is unnatural and contrived. The same is true of the last two "popular" numbers, which sound condescending and artificial. The songs, however, have all her customary finesse and inwardness; the Wolf group, perhaps chosen for its gentle humor, is charming, while Strauss' "Four Last Songs" (represented by two) shimmer and soar. Schwarzkopf's singing had instantly recognizable characteristics: a tendency to hold back both vocally and emotionally, giving a sense of noble restraint, but also of cool detachment; excessive use of color and nuance, creating a fussy, calculated and somewhat artificial air. Only rarely does she "let go" with full voice and spontaneous feeling. However, as these recordings show, she invariably inspires admiration and captures ear and heart through the inimitable, glorious beauty of her voice. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

A very nice album for SCAdian ears.......2007-04-25
Whether you play in the SCA or just love great historical music, this is one of the better albums I've ever bought--on amazon or anywhere else!
Recording is defective.......2007-04-06
adequate performances but totally inadequate information.......2005-04-27
In short, for those not acquainted with pre-Baroque music, this is NOT a good place to start!!! Seasoned Early Music connoisseurs, on the other hand, may find a perverse pleasure in some atrocious moments, or perhaps take interest in its value as an example of historically informed performance style in the pioneering years - but you have been warned!!
For those interested, here are some alternative recommendations if you are new to this music: firstly, 2 wide-ranging compilations by 2 well-known ensembles -
1. Sinners and Saints - The New London Consort/Philip Pickett (Decca 48559)
2. Portrait ('Moyen Age et Renaissance') - Hesperion XX/Jordi Savall (Auvidis Fontalis 'Portrait' ES9904), or either of the 2 new compilations by Savall and his ensemble(s) on Alia Vox ('Harmonie Universelle', AV9810; 'Harmonie Universelle II', AV9839).
and a compilation (mostly of early music) featuring a number of different groups -
'Pastime with Good Company' (Alpha, A901) [includes groups like L'Arpegiatta, Le Poeme Harmonique, Diabolus in Musica...]
A nice overview of very early music.......2003-12-02
Don't Be Affraid.......2003-11-19
This cd was actually the first Medieval and Renaissance album I ever bought. I bought it randomly in 1992 to try and introduce myself to these two era's of Classical music. And it was PERFECT. I have been a loyal fan of Medieval & Renaissance music ever since. I currently own 25 to 30 cd's covering these era now. And this album is still one of my favorites......

This is a great lieder recital........2001-04-03
Testament have collected the Wolf lieder recorded by Hans Hotter and Gerald Moore during the 1950s. More than 20 lieder were recorded - one twice - and the producer was Walter Legge. Whether as Prometheus fulminating at the gods, or a phoney monk asking to be left alone by the bedside of a sick young woman, whether as an anguished mendicant harper or as a visitor to a beautiful garden who discovers that it contains the grave of Anacreon - Hotter's interpretations are masterly. Gerald Moore accompanies in his usual skilled, robust way.
I detect no technical or performance faults during this 70 minute CD. Some of the later items appear in stereo for the first time. This is a great lieder recital.

EMI's "society" subscription editions in the 1930s yielded a wealth of recordings long considered gramophone classics, such as the present collection of roughly half of Hugo Wolf's lieder output. Each song occupies its own specific world, due to Wolf's resourceful word setting and his avoidance of anything generic. In turn, the performers illuminate each song's felicities with effortless authority, and they avoid overpointing or enacting. Full texts and translations are included. Ernest Newman's penetrating annotations for the original 78 albums, reprinted in EMI's 1981 LP reissue, are absent. --Jed DistlerCustomer Reviews:
The Hugo Wolf Society Recordings.......2005-12-28
In the early 1930s, a young Walter Legge began a project of recording Wolf songs on a subscribtion basis to be limited to 500 sets. The recording industry was relatively new, and Wolf, then as now, too little appreciated. The result was an extensive series of recordings of issued between 1931 and 1938 consisting of 145 songs, about one-half Wolf's output, performed by fourteen singers. The Hugo Wolf Society recordings remain a high moment in the recording of song. They were remastered on LPs and, in 1998, in this 5 CD collection which includes previously unreleased selections.
The Wolf Society collection offers an unparalleled opportunity to get to know Wolf's songs performed by artists of the past that might otherwise be unfamiliar to many listeners. The performers include mezzo-soprano Elena Gerhardt, who recorded the initial volume for the society, baritones Herbert Janssen, Gerhard Husch, tenors John McCormack, Karl Erb, and Helge Roswaenge, the basses Alexander Kipnis, Frederich Schorr, and Ludwig Weber, and sopranos Alexandra Trianti, Elizabeth Rethberg, Ria Ginster, Marta Fuchs, and Tiana Lemnitz. The pianists include Conrad Bos, Gerald Moore, Michael Raucheisen, Hans Udo Muller, and Ernest Victor Wolff.
The singers perform in a variety of styles from the highly operatic to the quietly lyrical. There is a Wagnerian performance of Goethe's "Prometheus" by Friedrich Schorr with the London Symphony Orchestra -- the only track using an orchestral accompaniment. The Irish tenor John McCormack shows a more lyrical approach in his renowned performance of Goethe's poem "Ganymed". The sopranos, Alexandra Trianti, Ria Ginster, and Tiana Lemitz have light, clear, bell-like voices. I find the singers on this compilation take a much more individualized, idiosyncratic, and romantic approach to song than do their modern counterparts, who sometimes seem restrained and chaste by comparison.
Each of Wolf's great collections of songs is well-represented. Elena Gerhardt performs songs from each of Wolf's five books, with the exception of the Goethe songs. The young Alexander Kipnis gives a powerful reading of Wolf's three songs from Michaelangelo. The third CD in this collection features many songs from the Italian songbook performed by soprano Ginster, baritone Husch, and bass Kipnis together with recordings from the Spanish songbook by sopranos Rethberg and Ginster and baritone Husch. There are lovely performances by soprano Tiana Lemnitz in the previously uncollected supplementary material, which also includes several Eichendorff songs and a performance of the Goethe-song "Phanomen" by Alexander Kipnis.
There is a great amount of material in this collection, with each of the 5 CDs including in excess of 70 minutes of music. Most of Wolf's songs are highly concentrated and intense. They may prove difficult to the listener coming to them knowing only the lyricism of Schubert. I would not recommend trying to rush through this set at one or two hearings. It is best to take this music in small sections and to listen with text in hand. The compilation includes texts and translations for each of the songs together with good notes about the Wolf Society recording project. There is little discussion about Wolf or about the songs themselves.
This is an essential collection for those who love song, historical recordings, and the music of Hugo Wolf.

"Even little things can delight us.".......2003-06-02
Walter Legge, a very young EMI record producer in the 1930s, first made such a journey possible when he pioneered the Hugo Wolf Society and began releasing the volumes now reissued in this boxed set. Many singers were invited to participate. Legge's choice of singers was sometimes idiosyncratic. You might wonder how an Irish tenor, a Ukrainian bass and a Greek soprano were admitted to the roster. The results, however, especially in the case of the contributions of John McCormack and Alexander Kipnis, prove the sureness of his instincts.
About half Wolf's songs were made available in the original issue, between 1931 and 1938. With this reissue comes unused and hitherto unissued recordings, many by Tiana Lemnitz and Herbert Jannsen. So there is now more to discover and exploration is made easier for us in 2003 than it was in the 1930s. The remastering has improved the sound, Legge's widow Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is able to provide a perceptive introduction in an accompanying booklet, and the texts of the songs are now provided in German and English.

Wolf sung by various Lieder singers.......2000-08-15
These precious recordings offer us so much. They are a document of a golden age of Lieder singing, and they are superb recitals, sung by a variety of voices, never allowing the listener to tire of listening to a single voice for too long. They are also, of course, examples of some of the most wonderful Lieder writing of any time. These 5 cds are a must for a Lieder specialist, and can open new doors to the novice. Buy them, and never regret having this treasure trove which will give you pleasure all your life.

Remarkable double set for a master voice.......2007-03-25
There is only one thing missing for perfection: Fischer-Dieskau's marvelous performance of Mozart music, absent in this set, but you can find high peaks: Schubert's Das Wandern, Die Forelle (always one of my favorite lieder), Brahms'Wiegenlied, Wagner's Die Frist ist um (chilling) and Verdi's Eri tu (sour mix of rage and sorrow).
The Finest Collection of German Lieder.......2005-01-15
I received this CD as a Christmas gift, and was very excited to hear the quality of all the performances. Fischer-Dieskau's specialty is his Schubert Lieder, and his renditions are all fantastic-my favorites are Track 1, Die Schoene Mullerin, with its catchy accompaniment, Staendchen (Track 10), the serenade, and Du bist die Ruh (Track 11). Of course Erlking is a fan favorite, and FD's interpretation is fantastic.
Many people try to describe Fischer-Dieskau's style of interpretation and I find it quite difficult to explain. He has the ability to sing with a feeling of spontaneity, as if he is thinking and feeling the lyrics off the cuff, and yet technically each song is perfect, as if there is complete attention to detail.
The second CD contains excerpts from some of FD's opera/oratorio career, and some of the tracks are quite impressive. I personally prefer James Morris singing Wotan's Abschied by Wagner, but FD's version is extremely moving. FD is a bigger fish in the Lieder world than he is in the opera world, however (if the Lieder world is actually big enough to be a world--maybe just a region).
My take is that anybody who loves Fischer-Dieskau, German Lieder, or just good singing in general will be impressed and happy to own such a CD. I'm not familiar with all of FD's recordings (check it out, there are a lot) to know if these tracks really are HIS BEST, or if there are any glaring omissions, but I think everything on this CD is top-drawer.
How fortunate we are that a man like Fischer-Dieskau came along during the era of recorded sound. This CD is fantastic, and all music-lovers will approve.

A recording to appeal to the heart, the mind and the soul.......2007-06-28
There's a quite extraordinary quality of sensuousness in much of the songs in this Spanisches Liederbuch - think of "In dem Schatten meiner Locken" and "Bedeckt mich mit Blumen", for instance. To properly infuse the text with meaning and beauty, the singer is (in my opinion) required to know the timbre and colour of each word in each phrase, to be master of the song's phrases, pauses, smiles, sighs. I know there are some who feel that Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau are not "spontaneous", but great art does not require spontaneity - it requires greatness of talent and the communication of meaning. If you love the detail and fine brush-strokes that make what in my opinion is the mastery of miniature in song, you will fall in love with this recording.
I was captivated by the unique ability of Schwarzkopf to put her emotions into her voice, and to do this in such a way that it illuminated every phrase. Fischer-Dieskau is no less superb - he is without question a master of the Lied, and his beautifully phrased voice is the highest example of intellect in vocal music. Both Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau are also native German singers, and their German is immaculate. Their understanding AND communication of the song texts is unmatched.
Recommended in the highest degree.
Overly refined performance.......2007-06-19
I regret that I have to say that despite of all this I can not really enjoy this set. To me, the singing is overly refined. There is so much attention to detail that it disrupts the flow of the songs. The result is a lack of spontaneity and instead many phrases that sound forced.
For dedicated fans only.
Unsurpassed to this day.......2006-12-18
Wolf's Italian and spanish songbooks are among his most difficult works to penetrate. Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau made great recordings of both, and since then various sopranos and baritones have made highly successful versions of the Italian collection, which consists of very short songs, mostly not melodic, that can feel too intensely concentrated to follow through an enire hour.
It was Wolf's habit to invent a new style for each major colleciton of songs, and in the case of the Spanish songbook, the style is far form the Italian. Songs are longer, often melodic (though the melodies are convoluted and even tortured), the mood sober and inward, especially in the first ten songs--these are so tormented in their Spanish Cathlicism that not every listener will be able to take more than a few at a time. Anguished as they are, they are also the summit of Wolf's art, to me at least, and Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf make them shattering in their impact. Perhaps that's why so few sisngers have been tempted to approach the Spanish Songobok since then (there is an outstanding version on EMI, howver, from vo Otter and Olaf Bar.)
I own the original CD set and cannot comment on the latest refurbishment. The sound is fine in any event, and tough as this music is to listen to at times, no lover of Lieder can afford not to experience this very great recordings.
TAKE US TO YOUR LIEDER.......2005-04-25
Schwarzkopf has told us that for her Wolf is the `greatest' of the Lieder-writers, and that may be so for all such an expression conveys to me. To my ears, Wolf's songs are great music and great and profound art. What I find difficult to envisage is anyone loving these songs in the way we love those of Schubert, Schumann and Wolf's own pet hate Brahms. Wolf was also a musical critic, a prominent and outstandingly raucous adherent of Wagner's new musical era. A glance at the man's photograph, the head and features handsome but the expression hunted, haunted and obsessed, is enough to create alarm. He died early and insane, a victim of syphilis, but the style of his songs is highly intellectual. They don't remind me of Wagner in the least, and although he often used a flexible and non-lyrical vocal idiom he had a certain amount of melodic talent when he cared to show it, as in the first few of the `secular' songs that make up the majority of the Spanish Songbook. He was an ultra-craftsman, both in his innovative vocal writing and in his outstandingly original and resourceful piano accompaniments. It's the craftsmanship that makes the greatest impact on me, and I shouldn't wonder if that were not also what specially appealed to Schwarzkopf.
Wolf's way of working was to focus on one poet at a time to the exclusion of others. The Spanish songbook takes a set of translations, by Emanuel Giebel and Paul Heyse, of 16th and 17th century Spanish folk-poetry. The first 10 of these are to religious texts, the remaining 34 to secular - all songs about love, mainly unrequited but not always, particularly not in the last song of all. The religious songs are more demanding on the listener than the secular numbers, many of which have attractive melodies of a comparatively traditional kind and highly ingenious and engaging guitar-effects in their accompaniments. In general, the Spanish Songbook is easier to come to terms with than its slightly austere Italian counterpart.
The artistry and intellectual penetration shown by Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf are of the highest order, exactly as one would expect. Spontaneity is not the keynote, but we should not expect that - this is Wolf, not Schubert. Every detail is carefully crafted, and Moore is completely admirable in his handling of the varied piano effects and in his perfect sense of how to balance the piano writing, more partnership than accompaniment, with the singers. Schwarzkopf's voice by this stage has lost some of its youth, but she remains a great artist and a great interpreter of this composer, and the recording happily does not attempt any artificial enhancements.
Texts are of course given in full with English translations by the admirable Lionel Salter. The liner-note by Alan Blyth is slightly tiresome with its incessant message of how marvellous the music is and how perfectly the singers deal with it, but it contains some useful background material. For me, this is an outstanding issue and a welcome addition to my collection of the work of three great musicians. For cautious newcomers to Wolf I'd suggest trying `The Fire-rider' from his Moerike songs to hear just how marvellous he can be. As a next step, this set of the Spanish Songbook would be as good as I can suggest.

A pretty puzzle among song cycles........2006-07-22
Just as I resort to reading the directions after all putzing around with software installation fails, I read the liner notes and discover that the Italian influence is in the style of lyrics, written by Paul Heyse. All the short pieces (46 in all) roughly alternate between male (Olaf Bar) and female (Dawn Upshaw) pieces and there is some degree of conversation between the two parts.
Reading the text, I also detect that the subject matter is distinctly Italian, with food, wine, and carnal appetites being high on the list of subjects (unlike the very sentimental German take on love).
I am generally fond of Dawn Upshaw's singing, but she is clearly a lightweight, and does not do as good a job as, for example Anne Sophie Von Otter does with Wolf's 'Spanisches Liederbuch'.
The work is so interesting, this rendition encourages me to seek out additional interpretations. Stay tuned!
