This is a great CD for all kinds of people, it is one of the best works of Aziz Herawi. It takes you deep into a relaxation state, where you are free of stress and worry. It represents Afghanistans tredational sounds, and culture.

If You're Only Going to Buy One Afghani CD ..........2001-11-25

That Afghani classical music comes from the Hindustani tradition is obvious from numbers such as ragas Beiru (Bhairav), Pari and Pilu in Jhaptal, Dadra and Kaharwa talas. Some numbers feature a dutar - a kind of simpler sitar - and the drums are the well-known tabla.

However, the music itself is not up to par. The string instruments (dutar and rabab) have very short sustain, much like the Arabian oud and other simpler lutes, and so do not facilitate much bending of the notes (meend), a crucial ingredient in Indian classical music. Instead, the music is similar to the (in my opinion unbearable) diri-dari sarod traditions (Buddadev Das Gupta, Amjad Ali Khan etc) that trace their ancestry to Afghan rababiyas but Aziz Herawi's playing seems less melodicaly and rhythmically imaginative, presumably because his style is less cross-pollinated with other Hindustani gharanas. The disc also features folk music.

The album is not totally worthless; if you're curious about Afghani classical music, it showcases both rabab and dutar and may well be a better buy than a rabab-only CD. Nevertheless I am not as a Hindustani listener enthusiastic about the musical content at all.

Assyrian pop singer/songwriter Walter Aziz is responsible for taking Assyrian music to new heights. For a people occupying Northern Iraq, the struggle to mark an identity to the world is priority. Walter’s music strikes a chord in the hearts of young Assyrians and Middle Easterners everywhere with a modern sound and ground-breaking lyrics. Born in Baghdad and currently working out of San Francisco, Walter’s music and singing is a seamless fusion between the East and West. Walter Aziz is now finished with "Akitu", his full-length Assyrian album from EASTJAM Entertainment. "This is the biggest project of my career so far," he explains. The album, which offers 14 tracks, recorded in five different places across the globe. Sessions took place in Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Germany, and Istanbul, Turkey. There is also a blend of world musicians and instruments on this album. The LP features producers and musicians of Assyrian, American, Canadian, Egyptian, Lebanese, German, Mexican, and Turkish descent. The multicultural influence on the album is born from Walter's passion to assemble a new Assyrian sound that adopts ethnic traditions with modern melodies. Some of the musicians playing on the album have played for Turkish stars such as Sertab Erener, Tarkan, and the great Ibrahim Tatlises. Walter's goal with this album is to help develop Assyrian music as an industry, culture, artform, and message. "This is the time for Assyrians to show themselves, and with music we can express ourselves and our purpose in the world.
