DADDY'S GIRL.......2007-06-02
MY FATHER HAS THE VINYL ITS 35 YRS OLD. ITS SOMETHING WE SHARED WHILE HE COOKED DURING MY CHILDHOOD IN THE SEVENTIES, I WAS SIX. THE MINUTE SOUL MAKOSSA STARTED PLAYING WE WOULD LEAVE THE KITCHEN AND HEAD FOR THE LIVING ROOM AND DANCE TO THE BEAT. HAPPY MUSIC. BONDING MUSIC. AND AS I GREW OLDER, OUR DANCES IN THE LIVING ROOM, SOMETIMES, WE NEVER MADE IT OUT OF THE KITCHEN, BECAME A RITUAL, THROUGHOUT THE EIGHTIES,THE NINETIES, ETC.... THIS ALBUM NEVER GROWS OLD. THE NOSTALGIA THE ALBUM GENERATES IS INDESCRIBABLE. MANU DIBANGO IS INTOXICATING.... AWWWWWW!!!!! THE SEVENTIES. I'M GLAD I GREW UP IN THAT ERA AND MANU DIBANGO BECAME MY HERITAGE. AND NOW WE HAVE THE CD. ITS WORTH EVERY CENT. MY FATHER WAS SO HAPPY WHEN HE GOT IT IN THE MAIL. NOW HE CAN PLAY IT IN HIS TRUCK.

classic african soul/jazz.......2005-09-18
i actually found out about Manu from reading the insert for one of my Les Nubians cds. They introduced him as an "african jazz legend" so i just had to find out if he was worthy of this title and believe me,he is. Considering the dismal state of current rap and R&B i was ready for something different and got it. songs 1 and 5 have a james brown flavor to them. Baobob sunset, my favorite song, makes me feel like i am listening to coltrane has his seductive horn travels down an african river on a moonlit night. song number 8 reminds me of those old school house parties where traditional soca and roots reggae intertwine and mingle in ecstacy as the DJ blasts them through the speakers. and finally my other favorite song (sorry i dont have the names right now) is number ten. this song has a tito puentes vibe to it. although i used all of these musical references to describe this one artist, believe me when i say that he is unique and worthy in his own right. I have added him to the list of my other favorite african musicans which include the late and great Fela Kuti, and the incomparable band orchestra baobob. I hope this review has helped.
Light Jazz With A Dance Beat That Moves Circa 1972-1976.......2005-08-02
The very upbeat sensual title track in it's original form is enough to get the CD..the rest of the tracks are first-rate with its mix of somewhat Western influenced African rhythms, funk, dance in a unique sound that is Makossa Music. This is a pricey import new but worth it.
The remastering and CD art are very good and CD length maxed out so one can see how influential Manu was on the development of later day Dance,Disco etc. all with a Continental European feel from a Cameroonian blowing a cool and mean horn. The elegant side of Euro-Trash.
a classic.......2001-11-21
This cd is an early African dance classic. The title track soul makossa was a hit worldwide, spawning some 40 cover version. This is hot funky afro-soul eith punchy drums, and wild sax. This is without a doubt one of Dibango's best.

Roaring Lion of Cameroon sax.......2007-01-06
This is a pretty complete retrospective disc that is broken down into the following: The Nino Ferrer Years(1967-1971) featuring seven tracks from his France-African connection, The Soul Makossa Years(1972-1975) with three tracks that are pure Afro-jazz-funk and the introduction internationally of the smash "Soul Makossa," The Ivory Coast Years (1976-1978) where Manu Dibango returns to his roots in mother Africa, The Jamaican Experience(1979-1984)where he mixed it up with Sly & Robbie Shakespeare, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder and Chris Blackwell and The Hats Off Years(1985-1997)that features his acid-jazz tracks with collaborations with Africans King Sunny Ade, Youssou N'Dour and Ladysmith Black Mambazo amongst others of diverse musical backgrounds like Peter Gabriel and Sinead O'Connor. The first time, many years ago when I first heard "Soul Makossa" I was floored and hooked. Besides the I-love-it-immediately sound of "Soul Makossa" their are other outstanding tracks including the very similar but much faster tempo of "Big Blow" that will blow your socks off, the historical recording "Dikalo" which was a forerunner and echoes "Soul Makossa," the Latin-influenced "Hot Chicken" that features Dibango's blistering sax, the childhood memories inspired song( a river in Cameroon), "Wouri, " that features Manu on alto sax and piano with nice orchestration,"Goro City" that features the reaggae-driven beat of Jamaican beatmiesters Sly and Robbie Shakespeare that fuses well with the Lion of Cameroons sax,"Senga Abele" an often sampled song that mixes the rap of M.C. Mello with the funky-cool sax of Dibango and African singers for a true world beat sound and finally the classic title track from the excellent disc "Wakafrika" that will have your head bopping and feat aching to move. Manu Dibango has always been ahead of the musical curve and this disc proves just that. It would be hard to find a grittier-funky sound out there. Check it out if you like jazz, funk or world music; it's all here on this disc.

A true Afro classic.......1998-05-24
This recording was first released in 1969. The music has jazz flavor, but strongest tones are pure rhythm. Manu Dibango is a world renowned musician. It is difficult to express the excellence of this recording using mere words. My only regret about the CD is that it lacks the musicians' photo from the original LP - but the music is still right there.
