Stay Away.......2006-01-05
While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.
Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!
Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23
The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.
Pipes and Drums: Amazing Grace.......2000-06-11
I love the sound of the pipes for this one song, and is my favorite.

English Renaissance music done beautifully........2007-05-13
I bought this CD to have some authentic English Renaissance music in my collection,
and fell in love with it. The Earl of Oxford March is particularly appealing.
They don't come much better........2005-08-23
The incomparable Canadian Brass make this album a rare treat. From the first notes of Holborne's "Galliard" to the magnificent complexity of Byrd's "Fitzwilliam Suite", their renditions are sheer delight. The music is both relaxing and enjoyably stimulating. Repeated hearings allow the listener to discover some hidden turn or embellishment that was not noticed before, or to appreciate again the antiphonal and complementary interplay of the instruments in the antique harmonies they create. A most enjoyable recording.
The finest brass ensembles all on 1 album.......2002-01-31
I got this CD quite a while ago, and I still listen to it almost daily. Best at night in a candlelit room while it's raining sipping fine wine and reminising of the Renaissance festival! (wierd, I know. But that's just me) If you have an interest in this time period, you won't regret buying this CD.
An interesting spin on English Renaissance Music.......2000-08-09
The composers of 16th century England were able to take the music of other countries and produce something uniquely their own. So, too, has Canadian Brass taken English Renaissance music and made it into something wonderfully different. Immediately accessible (and acceptable) to modern ears, these tunes are a splendid treat. Almans and Galliards take on a whole new flavor when done entirely by brass instruments.
Great sound. Definitely a must for your collection........1999-11-05
I listen to this CD about once a week while riding to work so that I can keep my sanity. It was a gift from my daughters that keeps on giving.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent intro to Foster and Sousa.......2007-02-25
This is a tremendous value considering the price and the number of tracks that you get. The renditions are not bad, but I have heard better Foster. There is a lot of narration, which makes this a great teaching tool to introduce Foster and Sousa. The narration is a bit more for Foster than Sousa. Some of the Foster songs seem to be cut a little short, giving you what is really more of a sampler than a rich collection of complete Foster songs. The Sousa marches seem to be a little longer and don't have quite as much narration. Even though both men were well known American composers, their type of music was quite different, so it's kind of an odd paring on this album. It's a pleasant listen, but not a "must have" item unless you don't have much Foster or Sousa in your music collection; it's a good starter album. Great for kids who might be interested in learning about these two famous composers.

Today, English composer William Byrd (1540-1623) is mostly remembered for his vocal works, but his keyboard output--a vast array of pavans, galliards, plainsong interpretations, preludes, and popular-song arrangements--is just as noteworthy. Indeed, as Byrd sought to find his voice in writing music for the (relatively) new instrumental genre, he employed experimentation, creativity, and virtuosity that still sound fresh today. This ambitious set features virtually all Byrd's keyboard music, performed by Davitt Maroney on a handful of replica instruments. Spread over seven CDs (and with a solid 100 pages of liner notes dissecting the works), it's an impressive set for keyboard buffs and people curious about what music in Elizabethan England sounded like. Throughout, Maroney plays these challenging pieces impeccably, whether on harpsichord, church organ, clavichord, or muselar virginal (a type of plucked keyboard instrument). Sometimes musical labors of love don't translate to good listening, but in the case of William Byrd: The Complete Keyboard Music, we should all be thankful for Maroney's efforts. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Very, very nice set.......2003-08-23
I've been a fan of William Byrd's choral music (and have performed a few pieces, such as the Mass for Five Voices), but this is the first time I've really gotten deep into his keyboard music. I was not disappointed.
Some period keyboard recordings sound relentless--I have to admit that I cannot endure more than about 45 minutes of harpsichord music at a sitting, because it just lacks too much color and variation. Moroney has dealt with that by using a collection of period instruments and varying the mix. But (unlike Glenn Gould) he does not add in the piano. (I think the piano has a superior sound, simply because its dynamic range is wider, but it's wrong for Byrd's period. Moroney has answered that pretty well without cheating.)
If you are a polyphonic, contrapuntal music maniac the way I am, you will really enjoy wallowing in this stuff the way a hog wallows in mud. (OK, maybe I feel a little guilty for pigging out on Byrd music by buying 7 CDs of it. But I only feel a LITTLE guilty.)

If you're even _looking_ at this set of music, then chances are that you are already enamoured of either it (under the guise of a different performer) or similar early keyboard music. So . . . um . . . what are you waiting for?!? If such a thing as "definitive" Byrd exists on recording --- _this_ is definitive! The instruments (two organs, two harpsichords, a muselar virginal, and a clavichord) are breathtaking --- especially the muselar in "The Battell!" (Yes, the poor thing's a little clackety, but --- holy cow!! You'll hear what I mean.) And Moroney's technique does complete and utter justice to the music. I remember futzing my way through _The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book_ and _My Ladye Nevell's Book_ like a clod; Moroney, in contrast, makes the notes spring off of the pages and into life, with generous (but not overbearing) ornamentation and sprightly tempi (never too fast, never too slow, but always "just right" - I can't say such a thing very often). I don't know if Byrd sounded like he does here, but I can't imagine this music sounding any better. I'm done raving now. ;-)
a delight.......2001-01-28
As I write this I am listing to one after another of these CD. One can find scraps of this keyboard of the Tudor age on all sorts of `collection' CDs from `The Best Of ...' to those really featuring `a consort of viols' or the lute. Variation, I guess. And, of course, there is a large collection of Byrd on MIDI.
This set surpasses all of those by an astronomical margin.
Some will not like this set. If one enjoys Rap turned to an ear bleeding volume at 4 in the morning the chances are that you will not care for this quiet, intellectual music.
Likewise if your idea of the sounds of everlasting bliss is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rendition of A MIGHTY FORTRESS ... well ,you're going to recall that Byrd was a Catholic and lay curses against these truly wonderful works from Nephi to the border.
Everyone else needs this set.
I have more then 200 classical CD. These 7 are recorded well, the notes are great, the playing top notch and the music itself exquisite.
Excellent Set, Authentic perfromance.......2000-06-29
This wonderful set contains all Byrd's keyboard work, from organ to harpsichord. The playing style of Moroney is greatly correct and neatly fresh. His interpretation of these almost neglected music is wonderful. The touch and the tone of his performance, as well as the ornament, is natural and elegant. This is a must for those who love old keyboard music. The record is excellent too.

naxos is the greatest budget label of all-time. i've gotten so many great discs from them, and never a bummer. as for this disc, it's a great idea(arrangements of the songs of stephen foster for 19th century brass band, performed on period instruments), wonderfully executed. i have many recordings of stephen foster material, and this is one of the best. this brass band sounds fantastic and the audio quality is very very fine. i highly recommend that you make this a part of your household.
Stephen Foster Played by a Saxhorn (not saxophone) Quintet.......2004-06-20
Imagine a post-Civil War family trooping to the town square on a fine summer evening to hear the town band play a concert of arrangements of popular tunes, that gentler period's equivalent of a rock concert of today. That's essentially what we have here. The Chestnut Brass Company, a Philadelphia brass quintet which on occasion plays on everything from Baroque sackbuts to the most modern trumpets and trombones, here plays on instuments of the saxhorn family. Saxhorns, invented by Adolphe Sax, the fellow who also invented the better-known saxophone, are brass instruments perfected in the 1840s. Their conical bore projects a uniquely sweet and mellow sound. They were exceedingly popular for town bands during the latter half of the century, but their use had waned by the turn of the 20th century. This quintet consists of an E flat soprano, a B flat soprano, an E flat alto, a B flat baritone, and a E flat contrabass saxhorn. The dulcet tones and sonic blend are a marvel to behold. Partly, of course, this is due to the expert playing by Bruce Barrie, Susan Sexton (or is it SAXton?), Marian Hesse, Larry Zimmerman, and Jay Krush.
Stephen Foster wrote very little purely instrumental music, but his songs fostered (pun unavoidable) innumerable instrumental arrangements. Those heard here are taken (and sometimes re-arranged) from the playbooks of such 19th-century bands as the Manchester, New Hampshire town band, the Boston Brass Band and the brass band of the 26th Regiment of North Carolina, not to forget the U.S. Marine Band. The tunes are arranged into quicksteps, waltzes, marches, schottisches and potpourris. Most of the familiar tunes are here: 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Camptown Races,' 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming,' and 'Some Folks Do' as well as plenty of relatively unfamiliar songs. And because these arrangements come from all over some of the tunes appear several times like old friends. Some of my own favorites are 'Some Folks' arranged by W. L. Baccus, 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming' arranged by Bruce Barrie, 'Camptown Quick Step' arranged by Jay Krush, and 'Gentle Annie' from the U.S. Marine Corps Band archives.
As an unabashed fan of the music of Charles Ives, I can't hear these arrangements without wondering which of these tunes Charlie heard (and played) when his own father, a former Civil War bandmaster, led his town band in Danbury, Connecticut.
Recommended for brass band lovers, Stephen Foster fans, and folks who like, say, the sound track to Ken Burns's 'Civil War' PBS documentary.

STEPHEN FOSTER'S AMERICA.......2006-12-06
I am so happy that I discovered this CD! These interpretations take me back to another place and time when parlor music dominated America's musical culture. In the 19th century, trained singers sang beautiful ballads by the family piano. Douglas Jimerson presents a time capsule with carefully crafted interpretations. By the way, the sound samples on amazon appear to be from an earlier release of the album, and the new recordings are more lovely than I expected.
Keep shopping for Stephen Foster!.......2002-06-05
If I may be blunt, I can't stand this album! Mr. Jimerson's voice is excellent. However, his operatic leanings undermine the spirit of Stephen Foster's music.
As for the arrangments, if Mr. Jimerson is going to keep the words "dere" (for "there") and "dat" (for "that") in the songs, then why exclude the word "darkies" in favor of "mama" and the like? My guess is that fans of Stephen Foster (who, when compared to other minstrel songwriters of his day, imbided the subjects of his songs with a great deal of dignity) are more interested in maintaining the purity of the songs than they are in achieving political correctness via 19th Century songs!
For my money, the Robert Shaw Chorale C.D. of Stephen Foster songs is much more enjoyable.
Jimerson Not Half Bad.......2002-02-08
These are earnest and heartfelt renditions of Stephen Foster songs that really deliver a period flavor, and nail Foster's emotions on the head. I can't believe that anyone could object to Mr. Jimerson's elision of currently offensive racial terms. There's a difference between "Massa's in de Cold, Cold Ground," which establishes a dramatic situation, take it or leave it, and race-specific epithets that might hurt somebody's feelings in the here and now. My only problem with Mr. Jimerson is that he tends throw these bizarre songs into the mix that have nothing to do with the themes of his albums -- like "He's Got the Whole World." Still, we should be grateful that this sensitive singer (and his fine, period-conscious musicians) are recording great 19th Century sentimental songs. I'd like to see him go even deeper into the literature of the time.
Timeless and Beautiful.......2001-08-01
Faithful renditons of great songs. Every American should know the words to at least half a dozen of these gems. I do not agree with reviewers who believe he should have included the original slurs....these "reviewers" should imagine themselves in Mr. Jimmerson's place, who was singing for a diverse crowd in our nation's capitol in 1990's America. Accuracy ("authenticity"?)is of course crucial, but it is absurd to demand that the performer sing these uncomfortable lines in this setting.
Politally Correct or Stupid?.......2001-02-28
The major thing wrong with this recording is the editing out of the word "darkies" which is like eliminating "cowboy" from western songs. If this guy is so sensitive, why include "Massa" which is a tribute to a slave master. Also, He's Got The Whole World In His Hand is generally attributed to the modern age.
If you want to hear a much better rendition of Foster, and other music of the period, try and find Thomas Hampson, "American Dreamer" and "An Old Song Re-Sung".
