The likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, and Mark O'Connor can be heard on Heartland, a compilation featuring the best tracks from Sony's ongoing Appalachian-themed series of CDs. Individually, these folk and classical stars have little in common, but when they meet to play these new bluegrass-meets-chamber-music arrangements, the results are pure magic. It's hard to pinpoint these Americana-tinged tunes--they could fit in either Carnegie Hall or a grange hall--but they're all great; this is as much Aaron Copland's version of roots music as it is Bill Monroe's. Whether on fast-and-furious breakdowns such as "Death by Triple Fiddle" or on mellow, almost New Agey instrumentals such as "Sliding Down" (featuring Bela Fleck on the banjo), these musicians excel. Guest vocals by James Taylor and Alison Krauss break up the instrumentals, though instrumental virtuosity is the real highlight of this disc. A bit of a yawn-er.......2003-04-22

If you are planning to open up a high-end gift shop specializing in handcrafted wind chimes and micro-bakery scone mixes and the like, then you must have this CD playing for your customers. It might have a certain appeal there that it did not find in my living room. Not to say that the musicianship is not utterly outstanding, which it is most certainly. Aside from Short Trip Home, which is why I purchased this CD in the first place, I found the rest of the pieces somewhat vapid considering the caliber of the artists. Again, it has its appeal in an easy listening realm, but this was not what I was looking for.

Didn't expect an outstanding cd, don't know exactly why i got it,maybe because of yo yo and bela, but every piece is played
beautifully, even the vocal piece by James Taylor. The album is almost too good to be called Heartland, every piece is a class act. Bravo!

I drive alot commuting to and from my job. This music has served as the perfect backdrop to an lovely Indiana fall! I'm sure I'll recall those colorful images as I continue to listen to this CD through the colorless days of winter!

Sara Evans's 2000 effort, the platinum-selling Born to Fly, put her in the front ranks of the most promising of modern country singer-songwriters. As a woman with a strong traditional background, she found a way to marry contemporary sounds and sensibilities with her bedrock country and bluegrass history, and, with the help of producer Paul Worley, delivered a complete, believable, and very fetching record. But Restless sounds as if she and Worley just went in and cut a passel of songs. A lot of them carry a message of hope, of making "something magic out of something frightening," as she sings in "Rockin' Horse," one of five tracks she co-wrote. But most of them just sound as if she had getting on radio more in mind than anything else. It's hard to tell if the album doesn't know what it wants to be, or if it's Evans who's confused. Worley over-produced the majority of it with unnecessary layers and busy arrangements, and the repertoire ranges all over the place, from an awful attempt at swaggering R&B ("Big Cry") to the hay-bale-and-pickup milieu of "Suds in the Bucket." While the languid and affecting "Backseat of a Greyhound Bus" sticks in the memory and the sensual "Otis Redding" gets the hormones charged, too many of the songs just roll by. Evans remains a wonder of a singer, however, whether she's projecting her clearer pop voice or calling on the nasality of her Missouri barn-dance-and-bluegrass training, something in too short supply on this uneven effort. --Alanna Nash

Pick Up .......2007-07-02

Sara picked up the pace in her 4th album to good effect. This is the album of hers that I first heard and that got me interested in her. Sara recovered energy and tempo in this album in comparison wiht "Born to Fly." There are a number of good songs that serve as the pillars of this album, with very presentable songs in between. A strong 4 stars. Some worthy songs:

Rocking Horse
Back Seat of a Greyhound Bus - giving birth while on a bus trip
Niagra Falls - good imagery in this one, about love being as unstopable as a waterfall

Perfect - very catchy tune and lyrics

To Be Happy - stirring

Otis Reading - has a nice, homey feel to it. Sweetness of lover coming over

Feel it Coming On - great energy

Suds in the Bucket - excellent spirit and good story about girl who grows up real fast one day and leaves parents shocked

This is hands down Sara Evans's best album EVER!!! It's such a great blend of country and pop (even with some R&B and jazz) and it's easy for everybody to find a song they like on it. Here's my track by track review of it:

1. Rockin' Horse- Sara sings about a childhood experience and the life lesson she gains from it. It's a cute, upbeat song, but not one of the best on this album. It would have been great for someone else though (4/5)

2. Backseat Of A Greyhound Bus- This is probably the deepest song on the entire album. It's about a girl who gets pregnant before marriage, and gets kicked out of her hometown. Sara injects so much emotion into it and makes it a great song to listen to (5/5)

3. Restless- This is a song that most single people could be able to relate to. It's about feeling out of place in the world and not being able to find "the one." I think this is one of the easiest songs to relate to on this album (5/5)

4. Niagara- This is my favorite song on the album. It's an amazing, well-written ballad and you can just feel Sara's emotions when she sings it. It definitely is a contender for one of the best songs Sara has ever recorded (5/5)

5. Perfect- Very radio-friendly, upbeat rocker. I can definitely see why it was sent to radio. She sounds kind of quirky and cute when she sings it, and you can't help but sing along with her (5/5)

6. Need To Be Next To You- Very beautiful ballad. You can definitely tell how much Sara loved her soon-to-be-ex-husband at the time this song was recorded. This would make a very good wedding song actually (5/5)

7. To Be Happy- Probably the worst song on the album. Now don't get me wrong, it's a cute, upbeat song, and it definitely sticks to you, but it just doesn't size up to any of the other songs on this album (3/5)

8. Tonight- Beautiful, sexy song. This is another good indicator about how she felt about Craig before the whole ordeal happened, and it would also be a good wedding song (5/5)

9. Otis Redding- This song is very...unique. And that's why I love it. The song sort of starts out very mellow, kind of like something you would hear at a coffee shop, but then Sara sings her heart out on the chorus. Just a great song (5/5)

10. Feel It Comin' On- Sara could probably go up to Craig and sing this song to him right now. It's such a sassy love-gone-bad song, and it's a great one too (4.5/5)

11. I Give In- This is another great song that shows how Sara felt about Craig, and it's ANOTHER great wedding song. Most young couples will be able to relate to this song (5/5)

12. Big Cry- The most soulful song on this album. The horns accent Sara's stunning, passionate vocals amazingly, and she just sounds down-right great on it (5/5)

13. Suds In The Bucket- The fun, country tune on the album. You can definitely see why she sent it to radio, and the video is very fun to watch too! (5/5)

Great cd!.......2007-01-06

Sara Evans has an awesome voice, she was made to sing country. This album has more pop sound than her usual traditional country songs. But it's a joy to listen to, 13 great tracks. If you like Sara you will not be disappointed in this cd.

Sara's best album.......2006-12-30

I would say that "Restless" Is Sara's best album to date - It's a perfect combination of Pop and Country music. There are many themes on this album: Love, romance, life, break-ups, and having babies. Sara sings all of these songs perfectly - And every one can relate to at least one song on this album - IF not more! :)

The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

I Love it !.......2006-09-06

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

A collaboration between country legend David Allan Coe, plus Pantera's Dimebag Darrell, Vinnie Paul, and Rex Brown, Rebel Meets Rebel serve as a throwback to the ragged glory of second-string Southern rock acts such as Molly Hatchet and the Outlaws. Fusing the nastiest, most uncompromising elements of the hard rock that made Dime and Co. famous with Coe's rebellious spirit, RMR succeed on tracks such as "Cowboys Do More Dope," "Panfilo," and "Time," though others, especially "N.Y.C. I haven't heard this album but I used to work on Vinnie Paul's cars. One day he brought it in an had about 6 CDs with different versions of "Cowboys Do More Dope". It was a pretty entertaining song. This was probably around 2000.

I am a huge fan of both genres and kind of stumbled across this album, DAC is a true rebel just listen to If that aint country or read his biography. I was blown away from the start...the lyrics are country, the music is pure Pantera. Kid rock tried to cross over rock and country and had a little success, if this got the same air time then i believe the Kid, he would have no chance with his covers. A true last tribute to Dime, i suggest this be the last dimebag album it is that good.

The Good
A heavy pick-scratch riff and monster drums dominate "Nothing to Lose." The verses are led by thick bass thumps and Cole's rugged and seasoned vocals. Thunderous riffs meet country fiddle on the anthemic duet "Rebel Meets Rebel." Not only does Dimebag lay down the licks, but he trades barbs with Cole as well. Rockabilly piano and meaty guitars mix well on "Cowboys Do More Dope." The song delves into Cole's belief that country rockers love weed a lot more than the rock stars. "Heart Worn Highway" is right out of the late-70s Lynyrd Skynyrd book, with distortion kicked up to 11 of course.

The acoustic guitars mixed in help define its southern rock vibe. The clean guitar arpeggio's of "Arizona Rivers" sure do sound like Megadeth's "A Tout Le Monde." You can really feel Cole's emotion and heartbreak. Hank Williams III jumps in on the energetic and powerful track "Get Outta My Life." The chugga-chugga riffage on "Time" recalls the best of Pantera, while Cole does his best to keep up with the pace. The CD closes with an acoustic jam session on "NYC Streets," with the lyrics being complexly improvised.

The Bad
I'm not all that familiar with David Allen Cole's work, but the lyrics here seem a bit generic. Also, I sympathize with the issues American Indians have had to face, but songs like "Cherokee Cry" have been done over and over again. I don't think they have the same impact they once did.

The Verdict
The fusion of country music and heavy metal is a fairly new concept. David Allen Cole's deep and weathered vocals are a perfect match for the thunderous riffs, bass lines, and pounding drums of (what was left of) Pantera. I wouldn't say that the music portion is dead-on Pantera, but it's still just as intense. The music leans more on the country side, with more power. For those of you longing for more Dimebag material, Rebel Meets Rebel is a fitting tribute. Not only will you get to hear his familiar guitar stylings, but you will also hear a different side of the ax-man as he expands himself beyond his metal roots. A task like that would not have been acceptable if Dimebag didn't bring David Allen Cole along for credibility.

I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)

Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16

Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.

Trent Willmon's sophomore bolt from the chutes not only bears out the promise of his 2004 debut, but proves him to be a more solid artist than some folks might have thought. The West Texas native cowrote seven of the eleven songs, which draw on his own life as a creek-bank philosopher, real-life cowboy, and father. For that reason, perhaps, Willmon never sounds forced or inauthentic in romancing about Shiner Bock, fishing gear, and an iced down Iglou cooler, or building a Chris LeDoux-like song around the easy camaraderie of a roping pen. He comes across as a man who solidly knows who and what he is, even if it's a jilted lover hoping to revive a dead-end romance ("On Again Tonight"). As a stylist, the traditionalist seldom veers from form, his voice as durable yet as plain as a pair of blue Wranglers. Yet try as he might, he's not really the right singer for his own "Louisiana Rain," a scorchingly passionate R&B song of loneliness and desire. But elsewhere, particularly on the funny cheating song "Surprise," Willmon proves a fine guide to his material, taking great pleasure in life's guilty--and simple--pleasures. --Alanna Nash

I loved this CD! I don't think there's a bad song on it, although I especially like On Again Tonight, Love Shouldn't Have to Be So Hard, and Louisiana Rain, which is a *terrific* blues song!. Close on the heels of those three, Sometimes I Miss Ya, The Ropin' Pen, Good Horses to Ride (a great story song, a little reminiscent of some Garth songs). The rest of the songs are close behind - the uptempo Good One Comin' On, and a funny Surprise are good country rockers. This is the CD most likely to be found in my CD player now@

Good for some things.......2006-07-27

The album is good, not great, and definitely not insightful. Trent's voice is kind of all over the place, at times sounding too much like Billy Ray Cyrus and not enough like himself - particularly on ballads which he covered so well his first time out. The first few songs on this album are solid thoughtless rockers that are largely indistinguishable from each other. Mostly the songs on this album are strangely grouped, and not spread out well enough. He's a good enough songwriter, and he does have a sense of humor. What I'm saying here is that while I do enjoy Trent's music, and my voice even sounds a lot like his, this album is not one I would really sit back and listen to to reflect on. For that I'd take Gary Allan's "Tough All Over" or Julie Roberts' "Men and Mascara", or even Brooks & Dunn's "Hillbilly Deluxe". This CD is one that I would pop in at a party, or possibly in the car where I want something upbeat in the background. There aren't very many songs here worth talking about, unfortunately. The album opens good enough, and it closes well with a strong performance on "Louisiana Rain", but it's all pretty standard mainstream-style country. So this album is good for a dance party and it's definitely something you could pull a lot of safe radio singles out of - something to sell and appeal to the mainstream crowd - but this year has seen a league of much better country albums than this one, and Willmon and all other artists have to realize that and step up to the plate with a more solid effort. 3 stars is a strong rating for this disc.

I visited the states last year and was lucky enough to spend an evening at the Grand Old Opry. Trent Willmon was on the bill. I liked his singing so much I bought his debut album from the Opry shop and brought it home to the U.K. It has been played constantly since. I sent to Amazon.com for his latest album because it was not available in England. I received it within 1 week and once again it is been played all the time. I love the great lyrics and country feel to his music and can't wait for the next one.

ok i've listened to this album quite a few times and still have yet to find a strong point. i didn't get his first album so i'm not comparing like some reviewers may. "on again tonight" is the reason i bought this album and it's one of the only songs i like on it. some people who really like this cd will say "don't listen to him". or something like that but i'm right. a few of these songs aren't very well written and just trail off. as far as his voice goes, even if he has range, his voice isn't very good. i mean i like his voice on "beer man" and "on again to night" but some of these songs his voice makes sound worse. although some songs are ok none are exactly good. if you don't have the new toby keith, little big town, gary allan, jason aldean, jamey johnson, or brad paisley album(to name a few) get one of those cause ALL of them are much better than this.

They've endured late-'90s major-label hype and taken fire for their retro self-consciousness during their days on Arista. Despite all that, BR549 has proven remarkably resilient. While two founding members have departed, the reorganized lineup mixes veterans Chuck Mead, Shaw Wilson, and Don Herron with Chris Scruggs (Earl's grandson) and bassist Geoff Firebaugh. Loose and rocking, they rely on no-nonsense originals penned by Mead and Scruggs together and separately. Despite occasional clichés ("Honky Tonkin' Lifestyle"), most numbers are refreshingly free of pretense. Genuine regret pervades the Mead-Raul Malo rocker "That's What I Get." While "Tangled in the Pines" seems a confessional on the group's past, "Movin' the Country" skewers Music Row's soullessness ("tryin' hard not to fall through the cracks and grease up that machine"). A grittier, more honest instrumental sound complements the material. The quirky tempo changes on "No Friend of Mine" succeed and Herron's aggressive steel guitar now screams more than it cries. Few Nashville acts ever succeed in reinventing themselves; it seems BR549 have beaten those odds. --Rich Kienzle

I actually have had this disc since it first came out. To be honest, I was not a fan at first. I put it on my CD rack and did not listen again. I recently listened to it on a trip....and I listened to it over and over again. I'm sorry BR5-49 for my early errors. I am in the process of buying everything they have ever recorded now. Keep it up!

great fun...again..........2007-01-04

New members, so what. My friends Chad and Miles turned me on to these guys in the early 90's. I have been huck-a-billy-rockin with em ever since. There is just something about a group that gets your ears to pick up just because you hear the start to one of their songs that is very refreshing. My wife says that she thinks that all the songs sound the same to her. She just thinks it's "country" and tunes it out. It may not be to everyones taste, but I do like it. my suggestion: Buy it for a change of pace.

I read about this group in a local music rag and figured I'd take a taste. What a treat! BR5-49 is real straight-ahead country/rockabilly without any pretentions! Nice, clean uncluttered production, and top notch songwriting! They prove that even without a Brian Setzer (who I love, by the way), you can put together a really happening rockabilly band. I'd love to see them live.

According to their web site, they're going to do ten discs in the "Little House" series, which will be a truly wonderful thing, if they can keep the quality as high as it is on the first two CDs in the set.

I set up a reading circle with my daughter, my granddaughter and a couple of their friends, keep the discs cued up to the songs (if they're on the two discs I currently own), and it has truly enriched our experience.

As a music historian, I'm thrilled to death to see these songs coming back to life.

Decades before rock & roll, the Skillet Lickers blasted through raucous old-time romps that still sound as fresh and edgy as they must've sounded back in the 1920s, when they emerged as hillbilly music's leading artist. Fiddles endlessly blaze and soar over dance calls and raw, down-home hollers while Riley Puckett's guitar work keeps it all anchored. Puckett was probably the first star guitarist of old-time music and his unique, single-string style of rhythm guitar--harmonically fluid but rhythmically adventurous--proved essential to the development of bluegrass, not only for early rhythm guitarists, but later on for lead flat-pickers like Doc Watson, who enhanced it and moved it to the foreground. The songs, from "Soldier's Joy" to "Cackling Hen" to "Dixie" to "Leather Breeches," fiddlers' standards even then, remain so today thanks in large part to these historic recordings. --Marc Greilsamer

An essential component of a good old-time collection........2005-12-06

Gid Tanner is a legendary old-time fiddler, so much so that old-time fans are frequently seen wearing t-shirts that say "Gid is My Co-Pilot". The old-time style here is, to discerning ears, quite different than the more common "Round Peak" style, made most famous by fiddler Tommy Jarrell, and quite obviously different than, say, Ozark fiddling. None of the styles are any better or worse, just different, and serious old-time fans will enjoy picking apart the nuances of styles.

More casual old-time fans will enjoy this record as well, though, for both the excellent repertoire and top-notch musicianship. If you think O Brother Where Art Thou is the real deal, I suggest picking this up and having a listen.

This very fine cd - from County Records of Virginia - is superb!
County have once again produced a well balanced selection from the archives and have presented it to the public for their delectation. I would recommend this item to all lovers of traditional American Country Music. Don't let it pass you by.

HELL BROKE LOOSE IN GEORGIA & OTHER OLD-TIME FAVORITES.......2000-06-12

Dave Freeman's bluegrass and old-time country label, COUNTY, has been churning out "essential-listening" reissue albums for sometime now, all of which are classics that should be in every devotee's music library. A case in point is this 1996 compilation, THE SKILLET LICKERS: OLD TIME FIDDLE TUNES & SONGS FROM NORTH GEORGIA. Here we have on one CD 16 choice numbers, culled from the 88 sides recorded between 1926 -1931, by that great old-time string band, GID TANNER & HIS SKILLET LICKERS.

Our musical journey back in time starts off with the classic North Georgia-style fiddle tune, ROCKY PALLET, recorded in 1929, and ends with fiddle aces Clayton McMichen and Lowes Stokes, in true Skillet Licker fashion, wildly ripping through their 1930 rendition of that old-time warhorse, LEATHER BREECHES (the American version of LORD MACDONALD'S REEL). The Skillet Licker's unique sound was characterized by the interplay of the harmonizing fiddles (anywhere from 2 to 4 at a time, played by Clayton McMichen, Bert Layne, Lowe Stokes and/or Gid Tanner), Riley Puckett's inovative running bass lines on the guitar and Fate Norris' or Gid's rhythmic 5-string banjo accompaniment. Their highly syncopated, driving North Georgia style reflected the heavy influence of the African-American pre-blues fiddle and banjo tradition.

It was the Skillet Lickers, perhaps more than any other of the early old-time greats, that informed the evolution of the modern old-time string band sound in the 1970s and 80s. While seminal Revival bands like the Highwoods String Band and Bubba George drew their repertoires from many different sources and Southern regional traditions, it was the Skillet Lickers' fun-loving, raucous approach that truly inspired them and served as a model on which to base their own distinctive styles.

As always, this COUNTY album reflects that label's high standards. The original 78 rpm recordings have been remastered nicely and sound great, even to the virgin ears of listeners uninitiated in the mysteries of the raw, scratchy essence of these musical time capsules. The liner notes include highly informative essays by old-time musicologists Norm Cohen and Rich Nevins (though I have to disagree with Rich's dismissal of Fate Norris' banjo playing) and full discographical information on each cut.

If you want to turn on your friends outside the old-time fold to the inherent joys of your favorite music, this CD would be a good starting place. Likewise, I would recommend it to novice old-time musicians looking for some great classic tunes to add to their own repertoires.

Incredibly rollicking sounds from long ago and far away........1998-12-21

One of the finest old time fiddlin' bands, ever. A collection of old time ("hillbilly") 78's from 1920's and early 1930's. Artists include Lowe Stokes, Clayton MacMitchen, Gid Tanner, Riley Puckett, Bertie Layne and Fate Norris (usually inaudible, unfortunately), this CD is guaranteed to either get your feet moving uncontrollably, whether it be dancing or running as far away as you can get from it.

Numbers on this disc include "Hell Broke Loose in Georgia", "The Broken Down Gambler", and a very rollicking version of "Dixie" (hey, they WERE from Atlanta!)

All in all, a CD to please the old-time enthusiast, and annoy just about everyone else.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As with many "country" bands of the time (1920's), these guys had their share of songs that would be considered embarassing and even unacceptable today. NONE of those numbers are on this disc.
