Album Description

Ten years in the making, The Music of Islam series recorded in Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Yemen, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran and Qatar represents the most comprehensive sound documentation available to Westerners today, of a world religion dating back to 1/622. Although governed by strict rules for fourteen centuries, contact with other cultures has radically affected Islamic music throughout history. As the world enters the XV/21st century the timing of this collection serves an even larger purpose, documenting the traditions that have survived and will continue to survive for centuries to come. Today, one fifth of the world's population, one billion people, are Muslims, occupying a large territory stretching from the Atlantic shore of north and west Africa, through west, central, and south Asia to island southeast Asia, and attracting an increasing following in India, western Europe, north America, east Asia, and southern Africa. This is a global presence which cannot be ignored.

Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, has long had a tradition of art music, and one of the most celebrated mystical traditions in the world, that of the Mevlevi dervishes, evolved in Turkey. Mevlevi or Mawlawiyah music, developed in the VII/13th century and nurtured by several centuries of sultans, poets, and musicians, remains arguably the greatest Turkish contribution to the music of Islam. Although this music is the focus of this volume its influence is also strongly felt in volume 14.

Tracks 1-6 in this volume represent a complete sema ritual, and other rituals of mystic Mevlevi music are included as well. As a branch of Sufism, the Mevlevis practice the ritual called zikr (Arabic dhikr) - an ecstatic ceremony of invocation and remembrance of God through, among other things, the repeated chanting of his many names. The zikr is practiced by Sufis throughout the Islamic world, and it has been noted that even the Turkish sema is a specific subdivision of this genre of ritual. The Mevlevis also present their mystical music in what might be viewed as a kind of concert suite (tracks 7 and 9). Track 8 is a prelude of sorts that introduces the mode used in the final suite. Each suite is united by a different mode. In every case, the music draws its inspiration from the text, and its structure from a sophisticated set of modes, rhythms, and traditional forms.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering Rumi.......2007-01-13

When you hear the Mawlawiyah Music, your memory will go to the Rumi's Wedding with God. It is very exciting music.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, calming, and almost hypnotic music.......2001-12-05

I am uninitiated in the music of Islam, and decided today to purchase two albums. After sampling a few tracks from this particular album, I bought it. The other was "Lalezar - Music of the Sultans, Sufis & Seraglio" also found here at Amazon.

Now that I heard more of it on my home stereo system, I am intrigued and amazed by the beautiful music on this particular CD.

This is volume 9 of the 17 volumes comprising the set. I've been fortunate enough to have seen a live performance of Mawlawiyah music and the Whirling Dervishes, and from that experience I naturally gravitated to this CD in particular.

The Mawlawiyah music are composed and performed for the purpose of bringing all participants, including the listeners, closer to God. The music serves as a vehicle to a spiritual world.

I understood nary a word uttered on this CD, but it didn't matter. I found it strangely relaxing, and I was left longing for more.

If you are interested in world music, I believe you will enjoy this CD greatly.

Album Description

The dervish's whirling is a meditation—communion and contemplation—set to music; the calm center of a spiritual cyclone. Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation captures the music that drives this resplendent and timeless practice. Serpentine ney (flute), melodic santoor, impassioned singing and ancient frame drum form a hypnotic rhythmic engine, building in intensity and carrying the listener to whirling ecstasy. Recorded in India's Ishvani Kendra monastery, Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation features seasoned musicians, masters of the sema'a (Sufi ceremony), performing this irresistible music that propelled the original trance dancers. The Persian mystic poet Rumi, founder of the Mevlana Dervish brotherhood, wrote, "…Music uplifts the soul to realms above. The ashes glow, the latent fires increase: We listen and are fed with joy and peace." Immensely enjoyable for straight listening, truly indispensable for inner exploration, Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation places the listener at the tranquil heart of that latent fire.

3 out of 5 stars Eh..........2007-05-11

This CD is okay, but I don't find it as transformative as I've found other Sufi music, which sadly I do not know the names of those artists. The singer has a lovely voice and the instruments are well played but it definitely did not put me in the required state for whirling meditation which I have experience elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Sensual and uplifting.......2004-07-25

This wonderful CD combines the sensual beauty of the middle eastern rhythyms with the uplifting, entrancing spirituality of the chants. Each of the three long tracks builds from a simple beginning, increasing in tempo and passion. This is a wonderful CD for meditation, particulary active meditation (the whirling of the title, dance, etc.). I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Sufi traditions and/or middle eastern music.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2004-07-21

This album is beyond words to describe. Its powerful in all the messages that the musician is expressing, while the photography located in the cd jacket is just as astonishing. Michael Plaster is an amazing performer who has the ability to paint pictures with his music, and melt hearts with his words. I truly appreciate all that he has given the world musically. Thank you Michael for letting us all take a peak inside the world through your music.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Maturation in SWS's Sound.......2003-05-16

This CD would be brilliant even if it wasn't just one guy (Michael Plaster). But the fact that it is makes it all the more intimate. Contrary to the beliefs of one person, there is structure to these songs. It just isn't the predictable, cliched song structure heard in most popular music. And ambient Sadcore, the genre in which I'd classify this, isn't your typical popular music. If you are looking for normal, trite songs, don't buy this. These songs are drawn out, each note yearning and stretching like a dying man taking a last breath. (At approximately 75 minutes in length, you definitely get your money's worth). The emotion in one note of this music is much greater than that in an entire pop CD. The chord progressions and melodies are incredibly beautiful, the performances vulnerable, and the voice and lyrics even more so. Plaster's lyrics on past SWS releases are known for being the most intimately beautiful and sad things ever sung. This CD is no different. However, there is a noticeable maturation in his songwriting here. No two songs sound alike. Each has a different structure and/or different arrangements. Speaking of which, the blend of electric and acoustic guitars, piano, synth pads, and processed drums, all dripping with gorgeous reverb, is as perfect as one could wish for. I would not change any part of any song on this album. My favorites here are "The Wedding", "Nani", "Aileron", "Salt Angel", "Gaze", "Happy Valley", and "I Give Up. Goodbye". If you listen to the sound clips featured on this page, be aware that they will not give you an accurate representation of this album or SWS in general. You must observe this CD in its entirety to fully understand it. When you buy this (and every other amazing SWS album, especially "Hope Was"), listen to it on high-quality headphones with the lyrics in hand. Let the experience of Soul Whirling Somewhere take control of your mind and soak deep into your heart. You will never be the same.

3 out of 5 stars draining.......2003-01-02

There are maybe 3 or 4 good tracks on this cd. The rest all sounds wish washy. There is no structure to most of the songs and the muscianship is quite mediocre. The vocals however, are intriguing, soft, and emotional. You just wish it would reach some sort of peak, but the songs just never reach the next level (like in I give Up, goodbye, a great track). For just being one guy, this is quite good and Im sure it will only get better in time.

5 out of 5 stars All that isn't wrong with music.......2002-03-09

is found on this album. Exceptional. Do yourself a favor. Get it.

The only thing missing is more...

5 out of 5 stars Dreamscapes.......2002-01-16

Dreamscapes is the best way i could define this cd, it is a Magical & Melodic experience for the senses & the Soul.

5 out of 5 stars Digestable Sufi Music.......2007-04-27

Lately I have been exploring Sufi music most of which was somewhat harsh and rough. Looking for that nice blend of vocals and instrumentation like Dead Can Dance flavor. Having been introduced to Sufi dancing many years ago, where dancers go in circles around the musicians in the middle as well as palm to heart. Very religious experience without the dogma. So far this has been the best work that captured that feeling and rhythm.

5 out of 5 stars Changing but still the same.......2001-09-06

Sunscreem's original hybrid of hard core techno beats with plenty of live guitars in the mix with a lot of soaring vocals courtesy Lucia Holm is forever inprinted in my mind - CHANGE OR DIE - although not as bold and fierce still manages to capture the Sunscreem energy - the epic force of Exodus makes it a true rave anthem - the lush layers of When and Looking At You intoxicate and the pop lyrics of White Skies and Secrets make Sunscreem a true band in every sense of the word with a resume of style few could ever try to duplicate. Keep on screeming!!

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2000-08-30

Sunscreem is a constantly changing group, and this album is no exception. While a little less industrial-sounding than O3, it still has that tehcno-alt.rock-pop feel to it. The tracks range from the darkly clubby 'Exodus' and the summery 'When' to the full-blown pop of 'Secrets' and the acid feel of 'Syclick'. Their mix of live guitars and drums along with computer-controlled analog synths and techno drum loops is unmistakable. Watch out soon for their next album, 'Out Of The Woods'.

    5 out of 5 stars Sunscreem - A Clear Musical Genius.......2000-06-09

Sunscreem has got to be one of the best kept secrets in musical history. Their music transcends Dance, Trance, and Ambiance into a new relm of high energy music...I like to refer it to Power Music! Each of their albumns holds more energy than every nuclear facility in the world combined! Their mix of synth., rythmn, words (a much desired rarity in futuristic music!), and beat gives the listener a sense of power and immortality! Their music evokes the imagination and sends one into a daydream state!

    Best songs: EVERY SINGLE ONE!

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......1999-10-16

This cd is now my favorite. It displaces Sunscreem's first album O3 for that spot. Songs like when, looking at you, and white skies are just so invogorating. If your looking for something to dance to that is more original than what is being played on the radio buy this CD. You won't regret it. Every song on the album is good! I don't know why Sunscreem never achieved a higher level of success here in the states but this CD proves they deserve it!

It's odd that the overall mood of a double-CD-full of songs on love and the loss thereof should be one of peace, but that's the impression left by Soul Whirling Somewhere's Hope Was. Michael Plaster's gentle voice, supported by an acoustic guitar and a host of instruments both electronic and acoustic, has in it the sound of transition, making Hope Was the perfect music for sunrise or sunset. One expects to see the opening credits of a movie upon hearing this music, a movie featuring lonesome figures standing on street corners, whether it's the gentle evocativeness of "Strength Is My Weakness" or the ambient-sounding, strings-heavy "How to Hang Yourself." Meditative and entrancing, this is one recording you won't want to miss. -- Genevieve Williams

    5 out of 5 stars NOT a real snoozer.......2003-05-09

This is sadcore with a dark ambient twist. If you truly understand this genre of music, you will know that this is not boring stuff. If your heart and/or life is in complete shambles, this CD will move you more than you can possibly imagine. If you are not an emotional person who loves heartbreakingly beautiful music and lyrics, then do not buy this. Nothing really compares to this album, but for comparison's sake, I'd say it's like a darker and much more depressing version of American Music Club's "Everclear" or the Red House Painters' "Down Colorful Hill" or "Rollercoaster". Yes, I said it. "How can it possibly be more depressing than those albums?" you say to yourself. Well, I guess you'll just have to see for yourself. Basically, if you are the type of person I described above, you will not regret buying this. It is truly a masterpiece, and the only double-disc recording I can easily listen to all the way through. If I had to complain about something, I'd say that there are a couple of songs that seem a bit superfluous. BUT, Michael Plaster's beautifully expressed emotion comes through in his music and lyrics on every track. No song falls short of its intended mark. It is, by far, my favorite CD(s), with too many highlights to list. If you're still unsure about purchasing it, look at the song titles. If they speak to you in the slightest bit, you should buy this.

    2 out of 5 stars A real snoozer.......2003-03-25

There are maybe 3 or 4 good tracks on this cd. The rest all sounds wish washy. There is no structure to most of the
songs and the muscianship is quite mediocre. The vocals however, are intriguing, soft, and emotional. You just wish it would reach some sort of peak, but the songs just never take off. Amazingly enough I will write this same review for Please Send Help. This project could really take off with a full band to accompany Plaster's ability as a songwriter/singer/guitar player. Save your self some cash and purchase this from projekt's website for only $[a bit o money]. It's really how much this album should be regularly.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully sad and wonderful.......2000-09-08

Two discs of slow-paced, low-key songs about the end of a relationship and not wanting to let go. The 2 hours of music presented here can be very emotionally draining when listened to in one sitting, and I think that's the point. Michael Plaster actually forces you to feel what he is going through using slow acoustic guitar and somewhat sparse production in addition to his beautifully honest vocals. This is an album that has the ability to move you to tears.

While the album mostly works as a whole rather than seperate songs, there are a few standout tracks, mostly on disc 2..the best being "The Last Time I Left", one of the few tracks on the album with drums. Its simple piano and vocals truly express the sadness and denial within the lyrics.

This is an album that shouldn't be overlooked. Stark, haunting, beautiful..

5 out of 5 stars This is truly amazing...........1998-10-25

Soul Whirling Somewhere's Michael Plaster expresses views that have for sure been shared by everyone else on this planet and is bold enough to bring out these feelings. You can't help but feeling sorry for Michael Plaster, but those who have experienced darkness with relationships will understand the power that Hope Was provides.

    4 out of 5 stars ........1998-06-25

hello self absorption! one need only to read the song titles to know what this is all about. i think its kind of melodramatic, but others might really get into this. the music, as on all SWS records is fantastic. beautifully written and executed. the lyrics... like i said, just look at the song titles. if you are new to SWS, get "eating the sea", michael's true masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Will Leave You In Tears.......2003-01-31

This is what comes after Michael Plaster's first masterpiece, "Eating the Sea". In my opinion, "Everyone Will Eventually Leave You" is certainly just as good, if not better. Plaster's music has matured and is more varied than his previous effort. The lyrics are much more direct, and less bogged down with cloudy metaphors, initially leaving the listener with a more intimate feeling. "Everyone Will Eventually Leave You" is as depressing as its title, even though the overall sound is not quite as impenetrably dark. (This is mostly due to the improved recording quality, though.) Basically, this is perfectly executed dark ambient sadcore, definitely not for the faint of heart, but rather for the extremely heartbroken. Michael Plaster's blend of guitars, ethereal synth string pads, subtle electronics, and tearful vocals will leave you lost forever in another world.

    5 out of 5 stars ........1998-06-25

the full title of the record is "everyone will eventually leave you", and this is defintiely a downer, but a beautiful one. picking up where "eating the sea" left off, michael's music has definitely grown since the days of ethereal dirges like "unhittable". michael's vocals cascade around his beautiful electronics.. an excellent sophomore effort.

Drawing upon an ancient Sufi technique, this active meditation practice uses whirling and witnessing. While the whole body is moving, the center remains silent and still.

5 out of 5 stars Osho Whirling = sleep like a baby, and live a better life........2007-04-30

Its a life changing meditation if you can stick with it. The results started the first night with 5 minutes of whirling which will give you the feeling of an extra hour of sleep. After 6 months I am able to whirl for hours if I choose, which is far more relaxing then sleep. Try this at least once in your life.
