About the Artist
The artists on the CD are Gayle Torla and her father John Patrick Newman. Gayle Torla (Gayle Newman) was born in New Hampshire and raised to the sounds of Celtic music. From an early age, she remembers her grandfather, Jack Newman picking up his accordion and doing a little step dance on the kitchen floor. Gayle's father John Patrick Newman was born in Newfoundland, Canada and came to the United States with his family as a teen-ager. John Patrick Newman and his father played Celtic music together in New Hampshire for many years as a way of continuing their family tradtions, as well as remembering home. Just before Gayle's grandfather died, he handed his accordion to Gayle (who was 16 at the time), and she took the accordion, not realizing that he was litterally passing the music on to her. A month later, Gayle began to play the Irish button box, carrying on the musical traditions. She later added tin whistle, and bagpipes to her collection of instruments. Gayle! and her dad John Patrick found themselves playing for friends and family and soon professionaly. Their music has not only brought incredible meaning to their lives but they have touched many lives with their music as they have performed around New England.
