Though it was made largely to help disentangle Hendrix from a thorny contractual dispute, 1970's live Band of Gypsys LP--six tracks pulled from four concerts recorded over New Year's Eve and Day in 1969-70--stands as one of Hendrix's most remarkable guitar statements, and an integral part of his recorded legacy. This two-CD set accounts for a large portion of the remainder of those concerts, and though uneven and ragged in spots, it offers some minor revelations. Highlights include a stunning jam in a revamped "Stone Free," "Auld Lang Syne" as only Hendrix could have played it, a playful "Who Knows" with an improvised New Year's lyric, alternate versions of the guitar showcases "Machine Gun" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and a downright weird "Earth Blues." Drummer Buddy Miles (with bassist Billy Cox, the Band of Gypsys in full) takes the spotlight on the funky--if very out-of-tune--"Stop." Clearly, Hendrix did well to select the cream of these gigs for the far more consistent original Gypsys album. Still, as his legend deepens, thirsty Hendrix devotees will find plenty of refreshment here. --James Rotondi

ook if u are a fan of hendrix u already own this u proly already own the band of gypsys on record to its the same show with more songs better one would think it would be i gess he did three or to shows there this is only the highlights come on theres more stuff in the vaults if other bands can relases the full live cd then why cant hendrix like i said get it if u are a fan if not then pick up band gypsys

Essential if you already have Band of Gypsys 1.......2007-04-02

I don't understand some of the low votes for this great album, even if some just don't like the editing. As others have said, bootlegs exist for those who want the shows in their entirety but this more commercially viable 2 CD set provides a sensible alternative. Because it is so much longer than the original classic, which also has a version of 'Machine Gun' which is undisputably better, it does not seem to have the same impact as that one does, but the music's just as good, if unsurprisingly with a different, but equally good sound mix. I'm surprised at complaints about sound quality. I have hundreds of live music CDs from this era and the sound quality is up there with the best. To anyone considering getting this, first try the original Band of Gypsys, preferably the 3 track extended version if you can track it down without paying too much. As it's a matter of taste, and many people who enjoy plenty of other Hendrix concerts may not like this one, see if you enjoy the single disc first before investing in this one. And if you're not outraged by the sound quality of the 3 bonus tracks (I believe 'Hear My Train' was lifted from videotape) of the original, you'll be more than pleased with the sound quality here.

I'm astonished that some people criticize the fact that some songs on the first album are not on this one. I would have been annoyed to find too much overlapping of songs on the 2 releases, and the choice as to whether to put an unheard version of a song on the album as opposed to a classic version available everywhere for over 30 years should be a no-brainer.

Whatever one may say about Buddy Miles, whose singing personally I find great but vocal scat singing and screaming intrusive, the fact is that there is far greater, more sophisticated playing from Hendrix here than on many earlier Experience concerts like Monterey for example, which were really exciting visual experiences but whose audio tracks may not contain as much great playing as a show when he was focusing more on the audio than the visual side. Even the version of 'Wild Thing' presented here has more in it musically than the early ones.

Some may have problems with Experience Hendrix, but one must admit that their releases have been light years ahead of most of those released since Hendrix died. Remember the awful mixes and edits of the Alan Douglas era, the space cadet liner notes of Michael Fairchild, Douglas's sidekick who wrote a book that pulls quotes out of Hendrix songs to prove that Jimi was on a mission to Earth to warn us of our impending destruction by a giant asteroid, and even some of the weird cover art. Now we have great clean mixes, no horrible echo or obtrusive studio effects, sensible informative liner notes, and great photos and overall artistic sensibility, extending also to their Dagger Records range of releases. So thank you Experience Hendrix, you're doing a great job, and are criticized only by those who have forgotten or have no memory of how the Hendrix legacy was handled in the past.

No Need to be Wary At All!.......2006-12-21

I put off buying this CD because of the negative reviews I had read. What a load of rubbish.

Band of Gypsys is one of the great live recordings released in the 60's and 70's. I always loved the Gypsys rhythm section as opposed to the Experience and always wanted to hear more from this line-up. On these Fillmore concerts, Buddy Miles is right there on the beat, there's no hesitation, no pussyfooting around, he's commital and right there on the beat, rock steady - folks in the Hendrix circle used to call him "the funky cememt mixer". Anyway, I figured if Band of Gypsies was so stunning, how bad could the out-takes from these concerts be?

I'm really amazed that it took until 1999 to get this material out to the public, especially considering all the marginal material that was peddled off to the fans. This is a great, great find for Hendrix fans. If you enjoyed Band of Gypsys then you definitely want to purchase this. I really have no criticisms at all. I am "tickled" that this is so good. Sure, Machine Gun isn't quite up to the same standard as the landmark version that appeared on Band of Gypsys, but both versions are still good. Stone Free is incredible, the "New Rising Sun" material sounds great live and the band is very tight. The Gypsys are a far tighter sounding band than Experience sound on their live releases. This is not just a jam band folks. Michael Jeffries was a complete idiot for working to destroy this lineup.

Let's face it, Jimi's live releases, apart from Band of Gypsys, are very much hit or miss affairs, track back track, CD by CD. Band of Gypsys is the fantastic exception and Live at The Fillmore isn't that far off the mark. It's grrrrrrrrreat! Buy at once!

Varying performances and quality, but good overall!.......2006-12-13

"Live at the Fillmore East" was one of those long-awaited purchases for me. After having heard "Band of Gypsys" almost 20 years ago on cassette and again on CD, I was excited to hear about the release of more footage from one of my favorite concerts ever.

When I finally did get it, I felt disappointed at first. Edits sounded clumsy, the microphones are way off on some tracks (because of technical problems, I learned later), and the performances are variable or take some getting used to, at least.

Highlights: my favorite is the jam on "Auld Lang Syne", even though the sound quality is bad and takes some getting used to, Jimi and company bring the 1970's to New York in style. "Hear My Train A Comin'" is the most intense version I've heard yet of Hendrix's deeply personal song, and "Izabella" has more life than his version from Woodstock. "Who Knows" takes some getting used to if you've heard the excellent version on the "Band of Gypsys" CD, because it departs quickly into a jam session, with Jimi even apologizing to the crowd. But on its own, no apologies are necessary, and you call tell that the band is tight and having fun. "Stepping Stone" also translates well with vibrant intensity on stage.

Indifferent: Two versions of "Machine Gun" are interesting to hear, and good performances, but nowhere near the version on Band of Gypsys. (Then again, how can you come close to that definitive version?) "Earth Blues", "Stop", "Voodoo Child" and "Changes". The last one ("Changes") starts and sounds almost identically to the "Band of Gypsys" CD version until it reaches a part where Buddy Miles improvises vocals. I prefer the other version with fewer vocals.

Not so good: Sound quality and the remaining tracks. Even the weakest songs aren't that bad though.

Overall, I have to say that I prefer the Band of Gypsys ensemble over The Experience. Nothing against Noel Redding or Mitch Mitchell, but Billy Cox and Buddy Miles provided a more cohesive sound and I always got the impression that Hendrix-Miles-Cox love the blues, which is a must if you were to play with Hendrix. In addition, with the Band of Gypsys group, the music is more 'simple' (if you want to call it that), but it is the music, rather than showmanship, that take center stage. I think that Buddy Miles made an excellent foil to Hendrix, with the additional talent of having lead and backup vocals that worked well with the music, allowing Hendrix to focus more on his guitar.

I'd recommend this to fans of later Hendrix, but I'd recommend people to get the "Band of Gypsys" CD first, since it contains the definitive performances and is also less expensive, being one disc versus two. Only then should you venture into "Live at the Fillmore East", and with the strong caveat that the sound travels into uneven territory that is unexpected from a digitally remastered release.

ANOTHER GREAT LIVE COMPILATION BY HENDRIX'S "BAND OF GYPSYS!".......2006-10-03

I will be doing a review on the legendary historic landmark 2-CD live compilation set entitled "Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys - Live At The Fillmore East" by the late great guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. As always, I will be editing this review from time to time so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible. In case you haven't read my previous review on the "Band Of Gypsys" DVD documentary, this is actually a continuation review of the "Band Of Gypsys" saga, this time focusing and highlighting on some of Jimi's unreleased song performances that were performed "Live At The Fillmore East" on 31 December 1969 and 1 January 1970. This latest 2-CD set, like the DVD documentary, were both separately released in 1999 and includes additional unreleased song performances that were not included in the original partial six song live compilation released in 1970 entitled "Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys." In case you don't remember, there was another live compilation (a sequel) of additional unreleased performances that was released by Capitol Records on vinyl and cassette in 1986, but not on CD, entitled "Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys 2."

With this new latest 1999 2-CD live compilation collection, along with the original 1970 and the then latest 1986 collection, these new unreleased performances shed a new light in the "Band Of Gypsys" saga and legacy resulting in bringing these partial Fillmore East concerts to life. With this being fact, these newly released performances add much more to the "Band Of Gypsys" legend and is clearly becoming more evident of being a truer testament in showing the further advancement of the band's fully creative side while performing live, in how mixing and combining Rock n' Roll, Soul, R&B, Blues and Funk can result in a new powerfully explosive sound of music.

Before I go any further, I would like to go way back to the beginning. In my DVD documentary review, I have stressed many contributing factors on the ideas and beginnings resulting in the birth and formation of the "Band Of Gypsys," along with the many contributing factors and incidents that would fatally prove disastrous and eventually break up the "Band Of Gypsys." In this latest 2-CD release, I will go further and stress another important contributing factor that was not discussed in my previous DVD documentary review. This is another one of many contributing factors that would result in the birth of the "Band Of Gypsys."

According to numerous Hendrix biographies and the attached liner booklet that accompanied this 2-CD live compilation set, the genesis, the root of the beginning that started all of this actually evolved from a serious problem Jimi neglected which began back in 1965. In 1965, Jimi was then, a typical hungry musician, who would sign any contract or any piece of paper in hopes that it would further advance his career. Having signed numerous contracts and many pieces of paper to many, unfortunately, for Jimi, there was one piece of paper that Jimi signed that would haunt him after he became famous. Since Jimi did not fulfill his obligations with this particular company, as was the case for the many others Jimi forgot about, the plaintiff's and attorneys representing this opposing company would file a lawsuit against Jimi demanding satisfaction. With this lawsuit pending, Jimi figured that the only way to resolve and settle this lawsuit was to give them something that would satisfy and resolve this issue. With this in mind, Jimi would contact and approach his long time friend and Army buddy named Billy Cox and explained what had happened. It was at this point, when it was decided by Jimi to settle out of court by giving the company plantiff's a new studio album recording for them to release. Cox's reply to this statement was, "lets go for it!" Also during this time, while Hendrix and Cox were discussing these matters further into details, and Jimi's Drummer Mitch Mitchell taking a break in England, Buddy Miles was a frequent visitor as well as a spectator in the studios with Jimi and Billy. When Miles was told about Jimi's misfortunes and his circumstances surrounding his situation, Miles decided the same fate and results as Billy. Miles reply was, "lets help our friend in need." With Jimi sharing and explaining his new ideas for a new sound with Cox and Miles, the two would agree on liking Jimi's new ideas and would help in fulfilling these goals by playing a mixture and a combination of Rock n' Roll, Soul, R&B, Blues and Funk. With these new goals and the stage now being set, this newly born trio would eventually become known as, the "Band Of Gypsys." With Cox's and Miles' full cooperation and their loyalty to Jimi, Jimi now felt a little at ease and believed that a resolution would soon be in the works in his legal matter.

In order to create this ultimate new sound for this new album, Jimi elected in preparing fresh new original material. Jimi really wanted to record these fresh new original songs in the studio for the sole purpose, and hopes, of fulfilling his legal obligations to this company by giving them a new studio album recording for them to release, and resolve and close this legal matter. But with the Fillmore East shows coming up, preparations such as practicing and rehearsing the new song material as well as the familiar songs for the upcoming shows, and with little time remaining, would soon become the main priority resulting in the postponement of the studio recordings of the new songs and therefore, laid aside.

With Jimi and his Management being harassed and subjected to increasing pressure from the company plaintiff's attorneys, in order to satisfy the Capitol / PPX settlement, a new decision was made by Jimi's Manager Mike Jeffery to record all four of the forthcoming Live Fillmore East Concert Performances. This decision was rendered in hopes of releasing a live compilation album rather than a studio album. With all of this in mind, and showtime about to commence, ALL FOUR concert performances spanning two evenings, were recorded onto tape on 31 December 1969 and 1 January 1970. Sadly, these 2-CD live compilation performances contain only sixteen of the many numerous songs that were performed in those four shows. However, it is also evident that these sixteen live song tracks do clearly audibly indicate and show the brilliance and expertise of some of the new genuine original and well-performed song material besides the regularly well known popular Hendrix songs. These sixteen live song tracks sounded EXCELLENT! The sixteen live song tracks contained and listed in this 2-CD live compilation set are reviewed as follows: DISC 1 (1.) "Stone Free," (1 January 1970, second show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (2.) "Power Of Soul," (1 January 1970, first show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (3.) "Hear My Train A Comin'," (31 December 1969, first show) (EXCELLENT WELL PERFORMED slow blues song!) (4.) "Izabella," (31 December 1969, first show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (5.) "Machine Gun," (1 January 1970, second show) (one of the very first live recordings of this legendary song. It is a POWERFUL and EXPLOSIVE song WELL PERFORMED! EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! As I've stressed in my other past reviews concerning this legendary song, I've described this song in this manner; "Jimi actually presents and brings the Vietnam war to the Fillmore East audience crowd resulting in firing rounds of machine gun bullets through his powerfully explosive and violent guitar and ending with an EXCELLENT BREATHTAKING GUITAR SOLO from Jimi.") (6.) "Voodoo Child" (Slight Return) (1 January 1970, second show) (an EXCELLENT VERSION of one of my favorites) and (7.) "We Gotta Live Together." (1 January 1970, second show) (EXCELLENT SONG! WELL PERFORMED!) DISC 2 (1.) "Auld Lang Syne," (31 December 1969, second show) (Well performed the Jimi Hendrix and "Band Of Gypsys" way) (2.) "Who Knows," (31 December 1969, first show) (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! GREAT SONG!) (3.) "Changes," (31 December 1969, first show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (4.) "Machine Gun," (31 December 1969, second show) (another EXCELLENT WELL PERFORMED VERSION. Refer to DISC 1 for my review of the other version of "Machine Gun." My opinions of these two songs are the same. This version is also EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING!) (5.) As story has it, and according to the attached CD liner notes and numerous Hendrix biographies, Technical problems RUINED the two New Years Eve concerts. A malfunctioning microphone at the outset of the first show rendered energetic versions of "Power Of Soul" and "Lover Man" UNUSABLE. Similar problems hampered the start of the second concert set, compromising the fidelity of the "Auld Lang Syne / Who Knows" medley. Nonetheless, these minor trifles made little impact on Jimi and the "Band Of Gypsys."

In closing, My DVD documentary review stressed on the MANY main incidents and problems that resulted in disasters and the MANY contributing factors which would lead Jimi into a deep depression and therefore, begin his demise and decline of his health. Sadly, the "Band Of Gypsys" era would prove to be , SHORT LIVED, courtesy of the EVIL CROOKED PLOTTED SCHEMES of Jimi's Manager, Mike Jeffery. It may have also been at this point; (despite all of the incidents and disasters that unfolded in the past, the most recent and the MANY NUMEROUS ones STILL TO COME) that bitter tensions and bad differences would develop, intensify and continually worsen the relationship between Hendrix and Jeffery. Despite all of the tensions and disasters, Jimi Hendrix IS STILL UNDOUBTEDLY, THE GREATEST GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED. Also, despite being held back and limiting his masterful creativity by Jeffery, Jimi STILL PERFORMED AND PLAYED HIS GUITAR AT A PEAK UNMATCHED BY MANY OF THE GREAT GUITAR LEGENDS. Jimi Hendrix is quite simply, EXTREMELY RARE, UNIQUE AND IRREPLACEABLE. Jimi Hendrix's mark in Rock n' Roll history is FOREVER SECURED. There will NEVER be another Jimi Hendrix. Thanks for your time in reading my long lengthy review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. Comtemporary Gospel Princess.......2007-07-10

This CD/DVD has just breathed new life into an already great of a first effort project. It showcases Mrs. Tamela Mann's vocal prowess, ability to minister, and ability to take us into straight worship. Very nice blend between comtemporary and some traditional gospel. You know we still love them hymns. Tamela and her team present a product that is spirit filled with great lyrical content and geat musicianship. The live aspect is a huge asset to this project. The instruments just enhance and don't try to compete with the vocal ability of Mann and the great efforts she makes to worship and minister. Wow everybody else is gonna have to step it up a bit I must say. I am throughly pleased with this project. Be blessed and pass it on.

You want guitar precision, listen to Jim Hall. You want perfect pitch, listen to Ella Fitzgerald. You want raw, electrifying, frightful, unruly, mesmerizing, aggressive, urgent, and occasionally brilliant gutbuckets of sound, listen to Jimi Hendrix's Monday morning Woodstock finale. Most of the masses had gone home, Jimi was nervous, his band unrehearsed, and the sound was as muddy as the grounds, but so what? In August of 1969, Hendrix's band, which he dubbed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows for this performance, was in a period of transition between the heavy psychedelic bluesy Experience and the more soulful, rhythmically dynamic Band of Gypsys. The two percussionists and a rhythm guitarist who augment Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Gypsy bassist Billy Cox are either mixed out by the engineer or drowned out by Hendrix's ferocious attack. Throughout the intense performance, finally restored here in sequential order and (almost, save for two Larry Lee vocals) in its entirety, Hendrix seems to touch on every musical style--from jazz to blues to funk to soul to metal, and even a few (fusion, punk) that weren't christened yet. There are crisper Hendrix shows out there, but none more explosive or more historic. --Marc Greilsamer

A nice collection of Hendrix highlights from Woodstock.....not too many of these sort of Woodstock Highlights for individual artists exist to my knowledge...this one is a real keeper.

Get the DVD instead?.......2005-12-22

Now that a double dvd of Jimi's Woodstock gig has been released, remixed by Eddie Kramer (including a 5.1 surround mix), there's not much need for this CD, especially since the dvd set is cheaper. Just beware that the older single dvd release bears the same title as the new one; "Live At Woodstock".

one word - WOW.......2005-02-22

As I am listening to Jimi Hendrix from any of his cd's I am always amazed in some way. His guitar skills are awesome and really nobody will ever be like him again. Over 50 percent of this cd is a guitar solo which really is all chopped up and spread throughout all the songs. "Star Spangled Banner" track is a perfect example of his guitar skills. "Jam Back at the House" is also very cool because of how he changes every minute and goes into a complete different solo. Also, the songs are much longer. The regular album songs that are only 3-5 minutes on his other cd range from 5-13 minutes on this 2-disc set. "Voodoo Child" is over 13 minutes long and its played faster then the album version. Overall all the songs are great and this would be a awesome set to add to your Hendrix collection.

I don't know why the editorial review and also the little booklet say that this is not his best performance, his guitar wasn't tuned for this, or they weren't good because none of them knew what they were playing. I thought it was a awesome performance. As Jimi puts it he was just jamming. I thought that was a cool line. It was like he didn't care if the audience left or what they thought, because he was just jamming.

Woodstock The Summer Of Love With Jimi Hendrix!.......2004-09-12

Live at Woodstock was great for Jimi Hendrix, but as far as his Gypsy Sun & Rainbows Band including Juma Sultan on percussion, Larry Lee on rhythm guitar, and Jerry Velez on percussion they where way out of key as far as sound wise. Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, and Jimi Hendrix played great together that very last day of Woodstock. This is truely a great performence including the entire set unlike the video Woodstock. Their are endless jams on this one including Message To Love running seven minutes and twenty one seconds wow! Hear My Train A Comin running 9:49, Spanish Castle Magic 7:05, and Jam Back At The House running 7:44 wow a great jam band.

Then second set is just as great with a great performence of Voodoo Chile(slight return) running 13:40). I also loved the jams titled Woodstock Improvisation, and Villanova Junction. The funny thing about the whole concert is the last song which is in my book the worst song titled Hey Joe other than that last song this performence is really good just with the three members. Larry Lee lacks being in tune for the whole concert they really cut him out on this recording the only song you really can hear his out of tune guitar is on Spanish Castle Magic. Their is a huge booklet included with the CD that explains the whole story behind the woodstock legacy. This is truely a must have Jimi Hendrix live concert!

After the legendary previous performances at 1969's Woodstock, which included bands like Sly, the Family Stone, The Who, Santana, Joe Cocker, and the newly minted Crosby, Stills, and Nash, at 9 'O Clock on August 18th, 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played Woodstock's most memorable performance, and one of the greatest of all-time. Featuring the virtuoso guitar talents of Jimi Hendrix, often hailed as the best guitarist ever, amidst bad weather and rowdy crowds the Jimi Hendrix experience played their heart out for nearly 2 and a half hours, and thankfully that concert was taped, and released for Hendrix fan's enjoyment. Below you will see how The Jimi Hendrix Experience's legendary performance at Woodstock turned out..

Track Selection-

Being new to Hendrix, I was taken on an unexpected but ultimately rewarding ride, as other than Rock N Roll classics 'Foxey Lady', 'Purple Haze' and 'Hey Joe', all the rest of these tracks were new to me. Songs such as 'Hear My Train A Comin', 'Spanish Castle Magic', 'Jam Back At The House', and 'Voodoo Child(Slight Return)' are basically examples of Hendrix's Guitar Mastery, his blistering solos encapsulating the echoes of time and talent to show he was surely a guitar god. 'Izzabella', 'Red House', 'Lover Man', and 'Villanova Junction' are all bluesy Hard Rockers that showcase magnificent musicianship, and could easily have been hits. 'Foxey Lady', 'Purple Haze', 'Hey Joe', and the minor hit 'Fire' are all thankfully included here to showcase Hendrix's biggest hits, but I wish he would have played more. Overall I think the Track Selection is excellent, and couldn't have asked for it to be any better! 5/5

Sound Quality-

For a bootleg of a concert in 1969, Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance sounds outstanding! The guitar solos and riffs blare out the speakers as if you were right there in the muddy crowd at Woodstock, Hendrix's vocals are clean, crisp, and easy to hear, and the bass and drums are clearly there and are easily hearable among the more obvious guitar. Surprisingly, some of the best Sound Quality I've ever heard from a live performance! 5/5

Band Performance-

What more can I say? Jimi Hendrix is in peak form here, his blistering solos and bluesy riffs, unknown at the time still retain their unmistakeable glory over 35 years later, and the backup band, which includes the bass and drums, dishes out a legendary performance alongside Hendrix. Basically, the Band Performance is flawless, perfect, OUTSTANDING! 5/5

Crowd Interaction-
The Jimi Hendrix Experience's concert at Woodstock boasts quite a lot of Crowd Interaction, as Hendrix usually gives a few words after every song, joking and informing throughout, and the crowd shouts often to Hendrix to 'TURN IT UP!', and it all makes for a very interesting experience!

Overall, The Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance at Woodstock is unmistakenly legendary, classic and brilliant in every way, and now stands as one of my favorite Live recordings. Since I was so impressed with this, I expect to pick up many more Hendrix albums in the next few visits to the CD store!

Saints and Friends, this is Rance Allen at their best! I've been a follower for a looonnnnggg time, and I was a bit concerned that this 'live' recording might be less than perfect but I bought it just 'cause I'm a fan. I have not been disappointed. Rance's lead vocals on most of the songs are right on, including his unique riffs. You'll enjoy this walk down miracle lane, guaranteed! May the Lord bless all that hear this CD.

Tremendous.......2004-10-07

I heard him on the radio 30+ years ago and saw him live for the first time, this year, at the gospel stage of the Cincinnati Blues Festival. Tremendous. Great songs. Great performance. The CD is an enhanced (instrumentation) version of the set I saw. If you're the least bit interested, this is not to be missed. There is also an excellent DVD of this performance available.

His Best All-Around Release.......2004-10-03

For years, I have been a lover of Rance Allen and his unique voice and ability to work a stage. This live compilation brought back some great memories for me and in my opinion, song for song, it's his best work. My favorites on this album are "Miracle Worker" (you can never go wrong with Fred Hammond), "Preacher Man" (my favorite as a teenager), "I can't Help Myself" (LaShaun Pace is another great singer), "Praise The Lord" (short, but sweet), "You Make Me Wanna Dance" (love the beat of this song) and "Something About The Name Jesus" (I fell in love with this one when Men of Standard recorded it with Rance and Kirk Franklin some years ago and although this version is very long, it's also well worth listening to). THE LIVE EXPERIENCE is definitely satisfaction for the music lover who enjoys uplifting, spirited songs with a beat that will have your toes tapping even while you're driving.

Rance Allens first "Live" c.d. .. well thats if you don't count the brief segment he performed on Wattstax on Stax Records way back in the day. It's a walk down memory lane by one of the greatest voices in the history of urban gosel music. Kirk Franklin's 10 minute version of "Something About That Name",..the opening "Miricle Worker" with Fred Hammond, and the short but sweet Praise The Lord.. are standouts... still look to the day that his true fans get an Anthology of these orig. hits from Stax, Capitol, & Word Records.

THIS IS A GREAT LIVE SHOW FROM HENDRIX'S 1968 TOUR! .......2006-10-07

I will be doing a review on the "now out of print" legendary historic classic CD concert performance entitled "The Jimi Hendrix Experience Live At Winterland" by the late great guitar legend, the ONE and ONLY Jimi Hendrix. I will be editing this review from time to time so that you the consumer will get the most accurate review possible. This CD was originally released on the "Rykodisc Records" label in 1987 but also has a copyright called "1986 Are You Experienced? Ltd." on the CD disc itself. The matrix number or ID number of this CD is RCD 20038. This CD contains combined partial live performances from the three live Winterland concert performances, San Francisco, October 10, 11, 12, 1968.

In all due respect, This is a GREAT live compilation of some of Jimi's GREATEST songs performed live. This CD also contains RARE live recordings performed by the band that have not been performed since. The Jimi Hendrix Experience were on FIRE during the 1968 tour and were nearing their peak during these recordings which were thankfully recorded for prosperity purposes.

The live performances contained on this album are as follows: (1.) "Prologue," (2.) "Fire," (EXCELLENT SONG! Hendrix has ARRIVED AGAIN!) (3.) "Manic Depression," (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! I can continue on by telling you how great this CD album really is (I give this CD 5 stars) but rather than do that, I am going to do what I have been doing with some of my previous Hendrix reviews and quote word for word what is written on the attached liner notes contained with the CD booklet of this album. It is as follows: His music flashed across the most dramatic decade of American history, the 1960's. Into this era came Jimi Hendrix, a seemingly unlikely person to become the great musical revolutionary of his generation. He would self-teach himself all of the blues greats such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker and Willie Dixon, to name a few, and with that, Jimi Hendrix would be the modified result and answer to all the British musicians who thought they had heard just about everything possible on the blues. Hendrix changed the music; It was never the same again. This realization ensured Jimi's ressurrection; he continues to gain new listeners seventeen years (and more) after he left this world. In fact, Hendrix was voted Guitarist Of The Year in Playboy's Jazz Poll, 5 years after he was no longer with us. There have also been many other polls that have been held through the years up to this day, and Jimi comes out on top winning the polls as The GREATEST GUITARIST OF ALL TIME.

By 1964 the Beatles had happened, Dylan was happening in the Village along with black comedians like Bill Cosby and Dick Gregory, Jimi Hendrix arrived to try to find a place in a White counter-culture denied him by by the black R&B world. (After stints with both Little Anthony and Little Richard.) Hendrix formed Jimmy James and the Blue Flames and electrified New York musicians with his unique approach. Still perhaps too hip for the states, he seemed tailor-made for the British rock scene and was recognized as such by Chas Chandler of The Animals who flew him back to England, thereby launching his career as The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

This historic live concert package was conceived and designed as a Compact Disc. These are the first authorized mixdowns from the original multi-track recordings, which has been carefully transferred to Digital 24-track, then Digitally mixed and mastered. The result is a sound with dynamics and clarity rarely found in live recordings from the era; this 70+-minute program makes full use of both the expanded frequency range and playing capacity of the Compact Disc.

In closing, what can I say in my reviews about Jimi Hendrix that hasn't already been said? I'll just keep saying what I've been saying all along that Jimi's mark in Rock n' Roll history is well secured and that all of Jimi Hendrix's accomplishments in Rock n' Roll history will NEVER be forgotten. Jimi Hendrix's name will always be remembered as THE GREATEST GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED. Need I say more? Thanks for your time in reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it. "Live at Winterland" was my first Jimi Hendrix CD, bought by sheer chance in 1993, when I was 16 years old and still knew him mostly from hear-say. Ever since, it has remained my favorite of all his recordings, with the arguable exception of the "Blues" album, and I have never heard a live CD or watched the live video of a better Hendrix performance, including Woodstock, Isle of Wight and the 4-concert compilation entitled "Stages". My impression is that in none of the other concerts I've heard Jimi is more at ease, sober, and enjoying his creative powers as viscerally and spontaneously as in this one. If I were to point out one single recording by our unforgetable man, I would have no doubt and say that Live at Winterland is the very hurricane's eye.

And so the CD has become my standard of comparison for everything else. In this one concert, we feel in Jimi through his music the overflow of such a healthy energy, such sane inspiration; he's got the right punch at all songs and is much more well-grounded and attentive than in other presentations - in which I feel him either too high, or simply bored, to give his best. Smartly taking his chances to push frontiers of improvisation in each note, even a song that otherwise doesn't catch my attention, "Maniac Depression", seems crisp and new. Soloes are long and beautiful, and playing fellows are incredibly tuned with his intuition. I never heard more intense and beautiful versions of "Sunshine of Your Love", "Tax Free" and "Foxy Lady"; the final sequence that starts with the intro to "Hey Joe" is mind-blowing and "Purple Haze" has a most special, longer solo, that I have not heard anywhere else. Finally, here "Spanish Castle Magic" is simply Revelation: I dare not even speak about it.

The one LIVE Jimi album you need to have. .......2006-04-14

There are lots of different recordings avalible of Jimi on stage. They're all mostly damn good. This one is ( I'm not kidding)the crown Jewel. Its not that he's playing that much differently to the audience, its the whole "feel" of the concert. He was completly loose and playing from the gut. Jimi had a tendency to play the way he felt at the moment. Sometimes nervous and uptight, like at Woodstock. The Winterland recording has the audience captured. He was having a damn good time that night. The version of "red House" goes on for ever with crashing hendrix blues licks, and while you're sitting there taking it all in, you ask yourself why for gods sakes didnt this album ever hit when it first showed up? Well produced and remixed for CD, this is one you need to have and actually listen to over and over. You wont get tired of it.

This is one of my favorite Jimi live releases. The other basic one is the Stages four live shows set. The other treat to this Winterland release is they did a companion addendum CD with three more songs from these shows. Together they're an excellent listen. Most of us weren't old enough to see Jimi live or lucky enough to if we were (mom wouldn't let me go see him at the San Diego Sports Arena in 1969 cuz I was 16 and had yet to attend a concert. Ended up seeing HERB ALBERT and the TIJUANA BRASS - with mom and then, in 1971, LED ZEPPLIN at that Arena. Yup).

If I understand it correctly this is a compilation of the 4 or so straight days that Jimi and the EXPERIENCE played at Winterland. Ah, San Francisco at its peak. Well, it's cool they recorded it and cooler that this got released. There's been some live shows released by the Jimi estate on their sorta bootleg label. This is at least as well recorded as any of those shows, probably better. Jimi lives, on tape. Nice chance we have to enjoy him and his band all over again. Cool. chrisbct@hotmail.com

This Man's a Genius.......2006-12-30

I "discovered" Junior Brown about 6 months ago when CMT ran the video of (his song) Highway Patrol. At first the quirky black and white presentation caught my eye while the solid beat caught my ear. Then Junior ripped into his Guit-Steel solo and I was mesmerized. I love good guitar playing, and style (Jazz, Country, Rock)doesn't really matter to me. If it's well played I'll listen to it. Anyway, I wanted to pick up a Junior album with Highway. I settled on this one. When I bought it, I listened to it about four times in a row all the way through, and then ordered another Junior Brown CD. If you can appreciate good guitar and real musical talent then you won't be disappointed by this album. I think I know good music when I hear it, and I can summarize this album and Junior Brown in one sentence: This Man's a Genius.

I was there the night he recorded this album, I was walking down South Congress when I heard that guitar and a super deep voice. I'm a long time Junior Brown fan, so needless to say I freaked out when I walked up to the Continental Club to see the man himself was on stage. The price at the door was about $25, so this album is a bargain.

Should have been better, but this will have to do........2006-09-27

This is a tough review for me to write as I am a total Junior Brown fanatic. I've seen him play many, many times and I've been waiting for a live album forever. Unfortunately, this wasn't his best night. You have to understand Junior is constantly touring - how he is able to get up on stage night after night after night playing the same songs is beyond me, but I'm still happy to hear him in whatever town I'm lucky to catch him in. For the most part Junior sounds tired on these tracks (he sounds great on "Juan Charasquado" though). Maybe he ought to take a few months off and let his batteries recharge or something. I wish he'd included "Freeborn Man" on this cd - the difference between the studio version and live is huge; I've heard him play what can only be described as an incredibly intense, blistering version of it live that had me shaking in ECSTACY - but it is not here. It's GREAT to hear "I Want To Live and Love Always" live, but it just isn't as good without Steve Layne playing and singing along. The "Rock and Roll Guitar Medley" is always a treat but it would have been SO MUCH BETTER if "Ghost Riders In The Sky" and Sergio Leone western themes were included again in the mix (hint, hint Jr. for future road dates).

Better to see him live than to listen to this live disc............2006-07-25

I have seen Junior Brown live a few times and I am always amazed at his guitar prowess, however I am very disappointed in this particular release:

1-First of all its only 52 min. long. A cd has about approximately 79 minutes of available space, and with Junior's songs being relatively short, there could have been 25 minutes more music on here.

2-The set list isn't the best.....there are MANY definitive Junior tracks which don't show up here at all.

3-Aside from the last track (Rock and Roll Guitar Medley) the performance here is rather lifeless, the singing sounds tired and strictly by the numbers....no flash, electricity or energy Junior usually provides in his LIVE shows...on this, he tends to simply 'phone it in'.

I really love Junior Brown and his music/guitar abilities, but this disc doesn't not reflect his ability as a performer, just that of a guitar picker.

free show! I would have paid hundreds, though. He and

In 1970, Jimi Hendrix returned to the country where he'd skyrocketed to fame and gave his first performances in almost two years when he headlined the Isle of Wight festival. Sadly, it was also to be his last major public appearance: less than three weeks later, he would be dead. Compiled from that performance (also available in its entirety as a limited-edition double disc), these recordings reveal a guitar legend in good humor, yet restlessly exploring the broader musical directions he'd just laid down on sessions for what would become First Rays of the New Rising Sun (initially released posthumously as The Cry of Love). Backed by Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Band of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix ranges from the improvisatory cacophony of "Machine Gun" and a retooling of his standard blues workout "Red House" to renditions of "Dolly Dagger," "Freedom," and "Hey Baby" that trade on the more rhythmic R&B and jazz influences he'd diligently worked into his music. At times jagged, and straining the limitations of the trio format (Hendrix had publicly mused about working with a big band shortly before his death), it's nonetheless a passionate, intriguing clue as to Hendrix's true ambitions and potential beyond his initial hype and stardom. --Jerry McCulley

The End Was Near.......2006-09-30

A long time ago, a friend gave me this performance on VHS as a gift. And I like it, although it does leave a little to be desired. Of course, the CD would have better sound, and a DVD would have superior quality. So this will just be about the show as presented in the older format.

Before getting started, on The Who's "Thirty Years Of Maximun R&B" video, Pete Townshend spoke of this performance with mixed feelings. He was proud of The Who's Isle Of Wight performance, but commented on the condition Hendrix was in at the time. He said that as he walked onto the stage, he remembers looking at Hendrix, and thanking God that he was healthy. And if you pay attention to how Hendrix is acting on the stage, you can see he wasn't doing very well.

The sound is ragged throughout, but any live performance from that time, especially from an outdoor performance, will be such. And when the show starts, personally, I think it's awful. The band slowly picks up momentum, and by the time they are playing "All Along The Watchtower," it seems to smooth out a little, even though he forgets lyrics several times during the middle of the show. Watch his face, he is doing the exhausted, puffy-cheeks exhale, staggering around a little, and seems to be somewhere else while doing the show. This is a fractured, tortured performance, but he seems to still keep it going, and considering all that was going on, this is commendable.

He does show brilliance several times here, like when he starts to let his "Red House" solo take off. But, as Townshend said, "He was in such tragically bad condition, physically...," not like the performance he did the previous May, at Berkeley College, and even though this was loud and sloppy as well, he had some energy there, that is missing here. And what's with the gum chewing? Gum is one of those things that should have never been invented, it's bad enough seeing a cow chewing the cud, but on a person, it is the most unflattering thing there is. LOSE THE GUM, JIMI! YOU TOO, BILLY!

But you have to wonder what was going through his mind at this show, the previous four years were complete chaos; the British Invasion, the Summer Of Love, the riots at the Chicago Democratic Convention, Vietnam, the black eye given rock festivals at the Altamont Speedway, the pressure on him to continue blazing new trails, the marathon use of drugs, and the obvious toll it took on him, physically. Given all this, it's surprising he didn't just keel over on the stage that night. And even though he was alive and conscious, you still could call this his "deathbed" performance. At the end, he seems to be relieved that he could go somewhere, and crash.

If he would've just slowed down a little, who knows where he'd be today?

Hendrix lets loose.......2006-05-23

While there is SOME sloppy playing on this CD, it is a concert after all, and conditions were pretty poor from a technical standpoint from what I hear. Is spite of this, this contains some truly inspiring improvisation from the king of improv. If you are familiar with H only from radioplay, you are in for a treat, as Hendrix's genius as a live perfomer really shines forth on these tracks. Truly sounds like two guitars. Credit should also go to the band, who are totally in synch with H's playing. You can hear how Hendrix is getting real jazzy in his phrasing. God, what could have been.... My favorite track: Hey Baby.

Magical..........2006-05-08

As usual with any performer that flies by the seat of his pants when playing live (unlike most of today's acts which rehearse their sets and perform the same things in the same way night after night), Jimi is hot and cold. He's clearly frustrated with his playing and certain tunes are at times both brilliant and also a letdown at others. Machine Gun is one example. The beginning is probably the best rendition of this tune I've ever heard him play - even better than Band Of Gypsies. However, he gets frustrated, takes a break during a drum solo, and comes back playing it somewhat different and almost constipated. His tone, however, is just thick and moving.

If you're a Hendrix fan or not, any live recording of his is worth 5 stars. He's just so imaginary, experimental, full of soul and feel, and his sound is incredible. His hands move so freely on the guitar that it's just soul stirring. Definitely the greatest guitarist of all time...without peer.

One of the best Hendrix shows on CD.......2005-09-08

This show is great, Jimi plays some of the greatest licks and riffs ever played on a guitar. Freedom, Red House, Dolly Dagger, Foxy Lady, Message to Love, Easy Rider, and In From The Storm are the best tunes from the show. I highly recommend getting the 2-disc set of this show.

Not a good performance.......2004-07-12

I have always thought this concert was a downer and it still is after remastering, remixing and repackaging.
Was a sad way to see Jimi go.

I bought this cassette at a sale for $1.99 from a scripture book store and never played it. 2 years later - WOW, now I need to find the DVD if there is one or the next best thing- the CD. We are jazz addicts and love God immensely, so this great great combination of flavours has pleased both my wife and I. The only other compilation that has mesmerized us like this one is the DVD titled "The Gospel According to Jazz Chapter II" by Kirk Whallum, with the likes of Jonathon Butler who is from our home town-South Africa.

Hello,
I first saw Ms. Baylor's Live Experience video and then I heard the CD. I was caught up in so much pain when I saw the video that it just released all the pain. I cried with her, I laughed with her, but most of all I praised GOD with her. She sings and praises GOD so beautifully. Her voice surrounds you and lets you know that you are not in charge GOD is. The song "Sold Out" is riveting with praise and worship. I shouted, clapped my hands and sang out, "Sold Out For Jesus". When she sang "I had a Praying Grandmother", I couldn't hold my tears back. I grew up in the church and I had a praying Grandmother, like Ms. Baylor said, "She never turned her Back on me."
And when she sang the words, "Can you help my friend, you're the only one that can", I rocked from side to side because many of my friends and family members need to be shown the way. The CD is a continuous spiritual journey and sermon about a GOD I know is always there. I listened to her CD until I warped it from the heat of the player. I played the Video so much it got stuck on one side. As I write this review I am beginning to tear up. I have been in recovery for 8 years. I can stand up and testify to the Glory of God. He has blessed me in so many ways.
The Live Experience is a tribute to God and contempory music. I love the music and admire Ms. Baylor for her keen music sense and voice. It is beautiful. Thank you Ms. Baylor for taking the hand of God and changing your life. You are a great spiritual inspiration. Your gospel band, singers and husband are a testimony to the power of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Along with God, Helen's choice of songwriters, including herself, and her fabulous band, exposed me to an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that I've never experienced from a recording such as this.
