4 out of 5 stars Children's Favorites a solid purchase.......2006-03-09

This CD mostly delivered what was expected of it. The only critique I have is that some of the tempos could have been cleaner, and that it should be cross-referenced by the other composers besides J. S. Bach.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect package.......2005-10-23

This is the most wonderful collection to have on 1 CD. Children from birth on up can benefit from this musical collage.
Songs from the "Nutcracker" are familiar and comfortable for many children. What child wouldn't love "March of the Tin Soldiers?"
Selections from Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals" is a must in my creative movement library. Every child should be exposed to this music. Well,I believe every age should be.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Introduction to the Classics.......2003-03-11

With total playing time clocking in at 78:04 minutes of music, you'll be paying about 6-cents/minute, which is a better bargain than long distance phone calls, and often more rewarding!

This disc is far superior than most other "Classics for Kids"-type recordings I've sampled for a number of reasons:

1) This album was expertly engineered. The production quality on this disc is first-rate from start to finish with crisp, clear sound.

2) The pieces were expertly picked. There is wonderful sonic variety here, spanning hundreds of years of wonderful melodies. There are orchestral pieces, harpsichord pieces, solo piano, and a piano concerto, capped off with Saint-Seans whimsical Carnival of the Animals. What kid (or adult) wouldn't love that?

3) The performances are, without exeption, expert! The pieces were definately screened for quality as well as content. Many are simply a joy to behold. Walter Klein is a particular stand-out, almost giddily prancing through Schumann's pieces. Believe it or not, he sounds even more impressive when backed up by the always inspiring Minnesota Orchestra on Mozart's Piano Concerto #17.

In short, this album is a great album even before you factor in the great price. You and your children are almost guaranteed to enjoy every 6-cents worth!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28

These Disney tunes done in the style of classic composers are so much fun. Children and adults alike will enjoy these songs over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Walt would be quite honored!.......2006-12-20

For many a baby boomer, Walt Disney meant animation. But, besides that, music played an important part in the telling of the story. So interested in music was the animator that he fashioned one of his greatest triumphs ("Fantasia") on the works of the great masters.

Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.

Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04

Being a classical music connoisseur, I often listen to my local public classical radio station to hear the works of the great composers of old and of today. One day the station played "Colors of the Wind" and announced it was from this CD. I fell in love with it. I am a huge Disney fan who has over 350 Disney songs on my iPod. Pretty much the only music I listen to is either classical or Disney. And having them combined makes this CD euphoria for the ears.

Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.

I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?

4 out of 5 stars sleeping to Disney.......2006-07-30

I am really pleased that there is a classical music cd that has only Disney classics so that I can play them for my infant daughter while she sleeps. We are big Disney fans and it's fun to play these instead of the regular classical music. They sound just like the original songs. I would have given 5 stars but I wish they would have had all instrumental music, one of the songs has a choir singing, but it still sound good.

5 out of 5 stars this is a treasure.......2003-05-11

Disney music is always uplifting. Classical music is beautiful. Combine the two - and you get THIS! "Colors of the Wind" is glorious, followed by the enchanting title track. "Beauty and the Beast" is true to the romance of the original. "The Second Star to the Right" is magical. Everything is awesome - and flawless. I initially bought this because I love The Main Street Electrical Parade music, and that is definiely a highlight here - but so are ALL the other songs! This is GOOD STUFF! It is so excellent that it can be a very beneficial introduction to classical music - for kids AND adults.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very harmonious album.......2006-01-16

I still love this album after years.

I don't agree with the reviewer below, the Entwife, about the production values, cut shocks, and that sort of thing: I even wonder whether he didn't mix up another album with this one.
On the contrary, some of the songs are even linked with no cut in-between, even more so than in Sacred Spirit's albums; and I find the volume of the whole album perfectly stable, with no need to adjust it on any track ( which actually I do with quite a few other albums than KT's ).

This album is extremely calming, harmonious, with Karen's lovely, fresh and sweet voice sometimes lightly accompanied by other vocals especially male ones, and enhanced - but never smothered in - enchanting music that is very evocative of Native Americans while also making use of modern & varied instrumentation.

I feel a great amount of care, attention to detail, dedication and passion has been poured into this album. Karen certainly wanted to give us her best here.

Of her two albums, this one is my favourite; I liked this one instantly, while I was at first disappointed when I listened to " warrior of the heart " which I bought afterwards. I still listen to both, especially this one, Heart of the wolf.

4 out of 5 stars I realy like the music, but the production values...........2001-02-17

The music on this CD is really quite innovative and a load of fun to listen to. Track number 2 is especially nice, and has a storytelling feel to it. Overall the music is an excellent blend of acousitc folky sounds augmented with synthesizers that fill out the pieces and complement the vocals. The production values, however, really bother me. Some of the cuts are really "in your face" and could have been recorded at a lower dB setting. Others on the same CD are very quiet. If you set the sound for the quiet tunes you are in for a rude shock every now and again....

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A perfect serving of tone, timing, rhythm and musical phrasing.......2005-11-25

A member of the Grande Ronde Tribe in Oregon, flutist Jan Michael Looking Wolf Reibach plays contemplative Native American music on his first ("Peaceful Journey") and third ("One Heart One Spirit") albums inspired by the hawks, rain, wolves, moon, owls, ocean, sunrise, sunset, horses, beauties of nature, and his ancestors. His albums contain both traditional and contemporary pieces that allow him to demonstrate his proficiency and skill with a number of instruments and styles. While always keeping the flute in the forefront, some pieces have been arranged with guitar, drum, rattle, and synthesizer. Some are presented only with solo flute. On "Peaceful Journey," liner notes are minimal, but three of the twelve compositions (Sacred Rain, Coastal Dream, Thunder People) are credited to others. The overall musical trek is one that takes us to calm, serene places. Reibach's restful music is an honest, uncompromising vision that makes clear statements. He plays with depth of feeling in each note, and the emotional resonance of his statements bridge all cultural boundaries.

"One Heart, One Spirit," Looking Wolf's April, 2004 release, offers fifteen tracks -- seven solo pieces and eight with acoustic guitar and/or piano accompaniment. I was happy to see the CD's jacket acknowledge three flute makers (Roger McGee, Odell Borg, and Jeff Calavan). Eleven different handmade flutes were used, including drones (double flutes), river-reed, and an ancient bone whistle replica. Guest artists (Michael Carno, Harri Dancing Raven Reibach, and Dow Yeh) are also credited. To fully incorporate his natural surroundings, some of the songs were recorded live in the mountains near the Grande Ronde reservation. Reibach knows how to put his ideas across with content and character. His passages are economical, and he uses his musical notes in a resourceful manner that recognizes the Native American understanding of how to live within limits. Without excesses, Looking Wolf's "One Heart, One Spirit" is a perfect serving of tone, timing, rhythm and musical phrasing. Aficionados of Native American flute music will be very pleased. Delicate lyrical lines blend seamlessly with (and are accented to perfection by) guitarist-mandolinist Nina Gerber's expert picking. "In China or a Woman's Heart (There Are Places No One Knows)" is an exceptionally beautiful tale of lifelong love, while "All He Ever Saw Was You" and the title track addresses loneliness with sympathy and grace. Spare arrangements and honest words are a winning combination in the hands of an artist of Wolf's caliber. -- Alexandra Russell

    5 out of 5 stars Kate Wolf's best.......1998-11-26

This is my favourite album, by anybody, of at least the last 20 years. It only makes me wonder what more Kate might have done, if she had lived to produce more. A beautiful voice, and, if possible, an even more beautiful song writer.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing tribute to one of this country's finest singer.......1998-07-04

I have heard all of her albums and corresponded with Kate up until the time of her death in 1986. She was a unique individual who brought her heart into her music and wanted to share it with the world. Her music moved me to a point that I have never been moved by an artist before or since I heard her the first time in 1980. She was a remarkable soul that has been taken from us just as she was blooming in her music. The dolphin song and ship at anchor caught my attention to the point that I have never loved music as much as I have with Kate Wolf. Buy all her albums, listen to them with your heart and you will find something that has been missing in your heart that she captures and holds you with a "slender thread". Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than Nora.......2004-12-24

Now if you ask me, and a substantial number of torch song virtuosos do on a frighteningly frequent basis, this here album is far superior to the work that Nora Jones has popularized in recent years. See, this here Julie Wolf has a voice that is considerably warmer and more velvety than that of Nora. Don't go thinking that I am casting disparaging thoughts at Miss Jones because I ain't - I like her work to an extent, but then again I get pretty worn out listening to her CDs because she sings beautifully while at the same time she sounds like she is singing somebody else's songs. That ain't the case for Julie Wolf.

Julie Wolf sings all the songs on this here album like they was her own. She makes them personal like, and that lends itself to the quality of the product. She also happens to be a gifted musician and can play a number of instruments quite beautifully and while I don't want to ramble on in a comparison of the two women, I don't know that Nora Jones can do that. In fact, I lost interest in Nora Jones before her first CD reached its critical climax. This here Julie Wolf CD sneaked in under the critical radar and managed to garner only a smidgen of recognition. This, my internet savvy friends, was a travesty. This is the album everybody should have been talking about when they were discovering or rediscovering more mature music... not that Nora Jones thing. Sorry, I'm attempting to get away from the comparison but I find it hard.

I will have to admit that I purchased this CD when I saw Julie Wolf perform behind Bruce Cockburn a while back and took it home and played it once while I was out in the shed working. I was preoccupied with getting the reversible flange on my brush hog replaced and didn't pay so much attention to the music. So I didn't play it again until last week and since I put it in to the CD player I have now played it about eleventy hundred times. This thang is wonderful, ya'll. We done had us a fire last night and had this here CD on and the whole Huckabee clan was mesmerized. Even Junior, who usually takes to other types of music.

Me and Mama put the youngin's to bed and played the CD again and sat there on the fold-a-bed in the front room and made cow eyes at each other and boy-howdy is this a good CD for doing that. I guess my final critique is - if you plan on makin' cow eyes and need some music that isn't just background music, but rather music to give you something to think about while you get all romantic, then this here CD is the one you need.

    5 out of 5 stars What I've been missing!.......2004-04-24

Virtually stumbled accross this artist when looking up a favorite of mine (Catie Curtis). Any friend of Caties's is a friend of mine. LOVED the CD. The perfect CD when you are not sure what mood you are in. Prefect for ALL occassions. Crisp, clean, beautiful music to enjoy - always. This CD had moved into my favorite position. A CD you will never get tired of!

    5 out of 5 stars Elegance.......2002-08-05

Where shall I? Can I begin, in describing the incredible Julie Wolf? Everything I can think of is a 'Given'. Julie is a tremendous pianist. 'Given'. Ms. Wolf is an amazing singer. 'Given'. Julie is an talented songwriter. 'Given'. Julie Wolf knows her way around arrangements, interpretation and accompaniment. 'Given'.
Her solo cd "Walk the Worn Out Floor" is to beautiful for words, as is the woman. As her hands slowly, very slowly start to play the first track, "My Foolish Heart", you can hear Julie's lips part right before she begins to sing. It's one of those magical moments in music when you and the artist become one, the feeling that you are listening from a breath away. The moment is absolute heaven.

"If I Loved You" a song first penned by the duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein becomes Julie's. I'm taken aback time and time again by the maturity in her phrasing, not only on this song, but on so many of the songs in this collection. A gorgeous melancholy and quiet introspection live and breathe on this track. She posseses the ability of being able to deliberately hang on a phrase, a note, and then, allow it fall a bit behind the song's natural rhythm.

Listening to "Love is Like a Cigarette" I'm always taken aback by the softness, the gentle air that resonates in the woman's voice. "Trust in Me" a song by Denny Goodhew, is sung to perfection. The interplay between the words, her piano and her voice, astounds me. She touches me with the 'feeling' of all three as they merge into one, imparting an opening of the soul.

She does an interpretation of Keith Jarrett's "My Song". This song is just to beautiful, it kills me, leaves me in a gorgeous restful place-everytime. The lyrics written by Rhiannon, a friend of Julie's, overlap and seemingly decode the sax melody played on the original version. "A Mountain Atop a Mountain" is breathtaking. Close your eyes and you're floating totally free as the airiest of cellos plays the melody, it's quietly taken over by Hans Teuber's flute, flying just abit higher and then the sweetness of Julie's voice, holds you as the same melody is finished as it should be, with her angelic tones in duet with the flute. Listening to her arrangement of "Baby Plays Around", you hear an ominous series of basslines being played behind the lyrics, by John Silverman. It darkens the music and for myself, matches the many moods being sung by Ms. Wolf. Julie weaves many emotions as she sings the lyrics. She moves from a sad timbre, a voice of anger, of worry, for what is to become of both of them. She touches on a complicated matter of factness. A place where a person finds acceptance of the truth in someone they love beyond measure, beyond longing, beyond reason yet deep remorse in finally having let go. A proud love but one that may make you ashamed to have fallen so deeply for them.

"Don't Go to Strangers" not only showcases Julie Wolf's voice but also her extremely tasteful soloing. I really don't know what jazz pianists she's studied, but I hear bits of everyone from Jarrett, a bit of Corea, a touch of Zawinul, colors of Lyle Mays' solo work, a sprinkle of Donald Fagen. This song moves from some infectious, bright and upbeat chords to start, and some very tastefully executed soloing. It all slowly finds it's way back, reacquainting you with Julie's magnificent voice to open the song's first verse. As she delivers her lines she also slows and darkens the mood, ever so gently. The tones become very soft and dreamlike, and her vocal walks inside and around the chords. Glorious. The solo starts very slowly, with a thoughtfulness, a meditative brilliance that grows into a very steady moving river of notes delivered with such purposeful deliberateness. As her solo builds, the somber mood that had been painted, sharpens and like a flower, it starts to blossom. It opens, not only a very quiet breath but also a walking bassline that starts to move the solo into a new color, a new brilliance, a new rhythm. The chord clusters chime and ring out but quickly remember their earlier musical embrace, and begin to close around themselves and break into single, soulful notes once again. Julie has once again shifted the mood and rhytmn , her fingers start to lead us back to some very heartfelt closing verses.

Ah, what an artist. She moves quite easily from the melodies of Annie Lennox to Rodgers & Hammerstein to a self penned song called "The Wall". This song, "The Wall", is a promising look into what the woman could offer us if we could only get another Julie Wolf solo cd. Julie left me wanting to know more about the character she's singing about...and that's exactly the intent. We all put up walls in our lives, for protection of our hearts, for the sake of diverting someone who's getting alittle to close, or just a wall to put up the memories. On "Daisy Petals on My Head", a cd by her sister Kate, you can hear one song co-written by Julie, yet I would love to hear more of Julie's solo music.

There really isn't to much on Julie Wolf out in 'webland', I've looked. It's a shame that an artist of her ability, her promise, her grace is for our purposes, living a musical life of such anonymity. The talent of this woman is immense. I'm so proud to know of her talent. I'm so very happy that I've come to know her music. Her touch on the piano is as delicate as her voice, yet her ability for interpretation is so far beyond what has become celebrated in today's 'so called music'. To have Julie Wolf acknowledged by today's standards of artistry would be a giant step downward to mediocrity.

I'm very proud to have met Ms. Wolf in person. She left me feeling a wonderment, a melancholy that only a person of that kind of elegance could bring.
