Album Description

"Athens Hotel" is the second album from the modern Celtic folk group Colcannon. Released in 1993, it features several songs that have become audience favorites: "Sister Josephine", the story of a nun who isn't, the title track "Athens Hotel", a song about a welfare hotel in Denver, and the haunting and ominous "Crooked Jack". The original instrumental "The Red Kite", featured on this recording, became the source material for bassist Mike Fitzmaurice's later large scale work for Colcannon and orchestra that goes by the same name.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Colcannon.......2005-07-29

I concur with all the thoughtful and nice things written about this album and this band.
For me it is a little personal. I lived in Boulder, Colorado about 15 years ago. I saw them, talked with some of the musicians on different occasions. Wonderful people, great memories or the James Pub where they often were playing.
Great album, of course. For me, in particular, a very nostalgic, incredibly emotional tune, "Stella Maris", composed by Doug Berch, who left the band a long time ago, so they don't play it anymore on stage. Stunning beauty, magical inspiration. I am thankful for what Colcannon has done over the years.

4 out of 5 stars Talented musicians, good writers.......2004-07-23

Athens Hotel is basically Americanized Celtic music. It's incredibily well done,a nd if you like music much at all it's worth a listen. They don't rely on the harp or bagpipes, instead using a variety of both celtic and non celtic instruments, and good solid vocals.
The music has a very Celtic feel, despite having auidible American influence, and the lyrics are intelligent (or in Sister Josephine, funny). It's an album that displays actual depth and artistry, as well as humor. It's really a classic, from a group that doesn't have the popularity it deserves.
Songs range from "Sister Josephin", which is a humor song about an escaped convict in a nunnery, to the title track, which is a straight up sad song, done with feeling, about a drunkard all alone, who is yet aware he's got further to go. It actually plays very much better than I'm making it sound ;). The band covers lots of artistic ground, but they do it well enough that it comes off as a cohesive whole. This album will become a favorite if given a chance.

5 out of 5 stars A muscial treat.......2003-12-13

Oh, aye . . . this CD will have your toes atappin! A must-have for any collector of fine Celtic music.

4 out of 5 stars Cries of the heart.......2001-06-15

In the summer of 1991 I was a captain in the US Marine Corps, freshly back from the Gulf War and assigned to a job in Boulder, Colorado. On my first day in town I was driving around a crowded downtown, trying to find a parking spot without paying too much attention to anything but the street. A car pulled out of a spot in front of me and I slipped in, getting out to find myself in front of The James Irish Pub. A few beers into the evening the local entertainment began, a band called Colcannon. As I listened to the stories of Mick Bolger, set to music, my heart was pulled to my sleeve. When he introduced a brand new song, Athens Hotel, as a paen to the down-and-out I didn't give it much thought. But as he sang, of the prayers for those who are out in the cold, "pissing in their shoes" I was swept back to the desert of Kuwait, cold in February with rain beating down for days on end. How could he know? How could a street runner in Denver know? Leave a light on for those out in the cold.

4 out of 5 stars Not just Irish blarney.......2000-10-25

Athens Hotel continues Colcannon's tradition of fine musicianship. I have followed this band since seeing them at a bluegrass festival in Fort Collins, Colorado and they never fail to entertain. Their music will make you both laugh and cry with their lyrics and their music. They are a delight to see live, but this is a good alternative.

5 out of 5 stars Talent, Expertise & Energy.......2000-02-25

This album contains an amazing assortment of musical styles, all done really well. There is something for everyone here, with instrumentals that transport you to the British Isles on a May day, and songs with enough rock to satisfy the souls of those of us who grew up on rock & roll. Mad Pudding's vocal harmonies are outstanding, and Amy Stephen sings like an angel. Robika is a beautiful love song, and a beautiful way to end this super album.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy name, great album.......2000-02-20

Grand Hotel is a wonderful melting pot album. Fiddle, accordian, guitar, bass and drums combine to produce celtic style with a solid back beat. Listen to the traditional vocal harmonies in the title track, the classical influences in Hoedown and the jazz flavours in Leon Accordeon. And don't miss the Hungarian style of the final track Robika. Grand Hotel is another step forward for this popular Vancouver based band who are now building a reputation across Europe.

4 out of 5 stars A MUSICAL MELTING POT.......1999-10-19

Vancouver folkies Mad Pudding are an entertaining bunch, and this is their best CD to date. Besides traditional folk ballads and reels teamed with world music beats, Pudding also incorporates classical themes into their sound, putting Brahms' "Hungarian Dance No. 5" into an uptempo version of Leonard Cohen's "First We Take Manhattan", and doing an exuberant fiddle and accordion-driven version of Aaron Copland's "Hoedown". "Reel de Janerio" is an interesting mix of Shetland and Brazilian themes (!), while "Celtic Funk Stew" is another self-explanatory hybrid that works better than you might think.

This is a band to watch out for.

I finally replaced my old worn-out cassette! I love this album. It was the first time I'd heard the Battlefield Band. Interesting song lyrics and great fiddling and pipes.
