Editorial Reviews
Radio France has been at the forefront in recording the music of the world for decades, and via its Ocora label it has made a massive library of the true roots of many world cultures. To try and put together a representative collection of the world's traditions is of course a ridiculous undertaking, and even the six full length CDs in this set barely put a dent in what is out there, let alone what this organization has collected. But if you want a concise reference guide to many of the most important and amazing musical entities on the planet, you can't do much better than this. The set is divided into regional collections: South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, North and West Africa, Africa (western and central), and Europe; it makes no attempt to catalog southern Africa, the central Pacific or the Americas. There are no popular fusions presented here. These are the old styles: solo pipa in China, singers and dancers in Gambia, village gamelan in Bali, and tavern singers in Greece. Each is excellently recorded on location--rarely in the studio--and never produced, staged, or overdubbed. The booklets that come with each CD are comprehensive, providing both regional history and reasonable details on the individual artists and pieces presented. Ocora has released hundreds of records over the years, and each has an important place in any library, but this compendium is certainly a vital starting point. --Louis Gibson

A concept album about gigantic household appliances taking over the world? No such luck. As the images of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Sun-era Elvis floating in the background might indicate, this Nashville band is strictly old school, singing about unemployed riverboat workers, covering Woody Guthrie and plucking banjos like there was no tomorrow. Produced by David Rawlings, Big Iron World boasts the expected barnstormers ("Cocaine Habit") and late-night meditations ("God's Got It") alongside a handful of folkie sing-a-longs ("Down Home Girl") and a thoroughly unexpected reference to Karl Rove. And where else are you going to hear songstress Gillian Welch banging away on the drums? --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

There are a few songs on the album that I still don't love: Down Home Girl has a pretty monotone, repetitive sound; Union Maid is too obviously a throw-back; and Bobcat Tracks is just hokey.
Now that I got my complaints out, though, what a great album. My Good Gal is reminiscent of my favorite Louvin Brothers song (Knoxville Girl); New Virginia Creeper demands dancing; and I Hear Them All is up there with the best of American folk political protest songs. Just a great time, great musicians, and I wish they'd come play live in New England.

Product Description
A trio of noted Australian musicians--Iva Davies, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon--composed the film's score. They previously collaborated on "The Ghost of Time," a piece commissioned for the Millennium celebrations in Sydney, which came to the attention of Peter Weir. The director was so impressed, he played the piece on the Master And Commander set throughout production, and he asked its creators to write the music for his movie. The score interweaves "Old World" and "New World" music, reflecting the talents and backgrounds of its composers. Iva Davies hails from both pop and classical traditions; Richard Tognetti, one of the world's great violin virtuosos, taught Russell Crowe the ins and outs of the instrument; and film/television composer Christopher Gordon brought orchestral texture to the project. Given the period, it comes as no surprise that the score is infused with source music from Bach (Cello Suite) and Mozart, among other great classical composers. Percussion dominates portions of the score. "Drums signal the forward movement of the ship," says Davies, "that it's on a mission. It brings you back into the action." The score's biggest surprise comes with its use of synthesizers. "Peter doesn't make films in the expected way," says Davies, "and for that reason we wanted the score to be not what everyone expected. Peter wanted some scenes to have what I call a kind of 'futuristic' sense"--conveying the idea that these 19th century sailors were cutting-edge explorers.Customer Reviews:

Good incidental music but not great listening music - except the classical pieces.......2006-11-09
The second type of music is much more enjoyable to listen to. Those that have seen the film know there are several scenes in which people are playing music - for example, Aubrey and Maturin in the captain's cabin performing a cello-violin duet, or the sailors on deck playing sea shanties on tin whistles. The pieces chosen for the film range from Bach to traditional folk music, and are a welcome addition to the soundtrack. The performances are very good (including a cello solo by Yo Yo Ma), and the recording quality is excellent. Deserving special mention is the Boccherini piece (La Musica Notturna Delle Strada di Madrid), which serves as a second unofficial theme song for the movie. The piece itself is presented in its entirety, and there is a callback to the piece in the incidental music as well, which is a welcome ray of levity in an otherwise oppressive piece.
People purchasing this disc run the real risk of being disappointed - the incidental music works so well in the context of the film that you are likely to think (as I did) that the music is itself worth listening to alone. Unfortunately, I don't find this is the case, but the classical music that is included makes this a soundtrack worth having, especially for the Boccherini piece.
Great classical music accompanies bland original score.......2006-09-27

If you can find a more stirring collection of Irish ditties, you'd better buy it, but it's doubtful you'll top this budget set. Not with the great Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem doing the honors and a price so low you'll be able to afford an extra pint for your mates. The wind is at your back all the way as the lads avoid chestnuts like "Danny Boy" along with Broadway-Irish show tunes, tearing into "Whack Fol the Diddle" and other "reel" deals instead. Highlights include the weeper "The Croppy Box," roof rattler "Finnigan's Wake," and "The Rising of the Moon," better known for the same-tune political song it spawned, "The Wearing of the Green." Tommy is in beautiful voice on "The Foggy Dew," earning his reputation as one of the best Irish singers of recent decades, and the Clancy Brothers excel on instruments and voice box. --Bob TarteCustomer Reviews:

These tracks come from the first two albums of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. They are called "Rising of the Moon" and "Come Fill Your Glass With Us" These tracks were recently reissued on Rykodisc, restored and remastered. Frankly, they sound AMAZING! This complation has terrible sound quality, and the recordings sound like they were copied from an old LP. Don't settle for this ugly sounding reissue, go and check out the remastered versions. Unless you are on a serious budget, get the other discs. Combined, they cost about twice what this costs, but IT IS WORTH IT!
Not Just for St. Patrick's Day!.......2006-12-28
It was originally issued as two separate vinyl LPs, recorded about 50 years ago. The first 14 tracks were on an album called "Irish Songs of Rebellion" while the last 14 comprised an album entitled "Irish Drinking Songs." That should explain the division between the anti-English war songs and the songs about drunks, drinking, and women.
I find nothing wrong with the sound quality, instrumentation, or engineering here. Of course my copy of the CD is an earler release on a different label with different cover art. As the tracks are identical and the songs are in the same order, I suspect it is identical to the version offered for sale here.
It seems I add another Celtic CD or two to my collection every year and play the Irish ones around St. Patrick's Day. This bargain disc holds up well against the competition -- the Dubliners, the Battering Ram, the Irish Rovers, the Chieftains (with and without James Galway and Van Morrison), Clannad, Danu, and a more recent Clancy Bros./Makem anthology. I won't even compare it with Foster & Allen, who are not my cuppa tea.
Apparently this CD will not please everyone, but at this price it's certainly worth a listen!

The tracks on The Best of the Chieftains are drawn from The Chieftains 7, The Chieftains 8, and Boil the Breakfast Early--three of the band's recordings from the late 1970s. This was the period when former Bothy Band and Planxty flautist Matt Molloy and vocalist/bodhran player Kevin Cunniffe joined up and finally fulfilled Paddy Maloney's vision of what the band should sound like. It also marks the last time the Chieftains recorded pure, unadulterated traditional Irish music. Not long after making these albums, the band set off on a new career that has included numerous movie and TV soundtracks, collaborations with pop stars of various stripes, and guest appearances with symphony orchestras. Although some purists decry the band's later attempts at crossover, the near perfection of tracks such as the exquisitely performed suite of dance tunes "Chase Around the Windmill" show that the Chieftains had taken the old tunes about as far as they could go. The group may have gone on to make better-selling records, but they never topped the traditional grace and charm of the songs on The Best of the Chieftains. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:

The best of the early Chieftains.......2003-11-27
There are some really incredible tracks here, like "O'Sullivan's March", an old 18th-century military tune arranged for the entire band -- the flutes in the middle section preserve the wonderful old fife-like quality of the original song. "Sea Image" and "Speic Seoigheach", composed by Paddy Moloney himself, point toward the group's later development as a band blending a traditional feel into their own original compositions. And the rest of the tracks show exactly why these marvelous Irishmen were nominated for a Grammy over twenty years ago.

More than three decades and many albums spent charting the gorgeous musical landscape of Ireland have made the Chieftains by far the world's most recognized and qualified ambassadors of Celtic sound and rhythm. Having toured the globe and garnered numerous awards, the traditional sextet has set its sights on something bigger: the pop charts. Though they've worked in the past with names like Roger Daltrey, Nanci Griffith, and Willie Nelson, on The Long Black Veil the Chieftains graduate to A-list guest stars with appearances by Sting, the Rolling Stones, and, yes, even Tom Jones. It's a testimony to the considerable talents and character of the Chieftains that none of the celebrity personalities or egos upstage the band on this record. Rather, the musicians always stay in control and the instruments remain at the center of the songs. So while Mick Jagger delivers a stirring reading of the title song, it's the pipes and fiddles that transform the country standard into deep Gaelic soul music. Turns by Marianne Faithfull, Ry Cooder, Mark Knopfler, Sinead O'Connor, and old buddy Van Morrison (doing his own "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?") come off predictably and competently, but breathing life into familiar, mostly traditional tunes like "The Lily of the West" and "The Foggy Dew" is ultimately the province of bandleader/tin whistler Paddy Moloney and his more-than-competent mates. --Roni Sarig
Customer Reviews:
Great Renditions of Classic Songs.......2007-04-08
The Long Black Veil is a bit of a departure for them - the band serves as a background for many modern, popular artists. You might think that Sting, Mick Jagger, Tom Jones, Sinead O'Connor, Van Morrison and others might overpower this group of folk players. But actually, the opposite happens. Sting's lilting voice fades seamlessly into the background as the gorgeous melodies intertwine. The songs are memorable not because a "famous name" is attached to the title, but because the classic tune is handled deftly by the Chieftains, and a well trained voice happens to supply the vocals.
It's fascinating in a way to see this diverse group of artists all singing traditional songs - songs that you might not otherwise ever hear them take on. But the real joy here is to hear your favorite classics done with such care and love. These artists all chose songs that had great meaning to them, and the Chieftains put their souls into the richness of the underlying tune. Each song here is a favorite for me for a different reasons.
Some Irish CDs are meant to be played in the background while people chug beer and talk in loud voices. Other CDs are put on for wild dancing and cheering the night through. This CD shines when you sit back, a glass in your hand, and you really listen to the nuances. You can hear the peat crackling softly on the fire, the wind whistling across the foggy meadows, and the textures of Ireland's past whispering through the beats. I've owned this for many years, and it's a CD I always come back to.
Highly recommended.
Typical Chieftans.......2007-01-04
Various pop rockers try their hand at olde-time Gaelic.......2006-07-06
All I can say is, I enjoyed the instrumental tracks far more than the ones with singing, as the pop artists often seem to be trying too hard.
Perhaps I am just weary of the overall cultural rush to embrace and commercialize all things Gaelic/Celtic. I don't know what it's like in the UK, but here in the States, it seems as if every swinging Richard is putting on the Green, or swaggering in a kilt, no matter how attenuated their blood connection to the Isles.
So lift a pint to this mediocre work, burn the instrumental tracks for safekeeping, and pawn it off at your local buy/trade shop for something a tad more interesting.
THE CHIEFTANS "A-CHIEF" THE BEST.......2005-09-08
An essential addition to any good CD collection. Buy It........2005-08-03
I recall this album being previewed on our local NPR station on a Tuesday and when I went to my local Borders in the same radio market, the CD was completely sold out within a day of the airplay of the title cut on which the Mick does the vocal solo.
And, to make the mix even more interesting, this particular album has quite a large mix of guest stars, far beyond the previous Chieftains hosting a single guest, as they did with their album with Van Morrison. The other guests are Sting, Sninead O'Connor on two tracks, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Ry Cooder on two cuts, Marianee Faithfull, and Tom Jones. Even Frank Zappa makes a ghostly appearance as the host of the recording session with Tom Jones on the `Tennessee Waltz'.
The combination of this awesome collection of talent plus the great instrumental work by the Chieftans themselves makes each and every track on this album an evocation which survives relistening over the years.
One Irish music weakness this album escapes is the feeling that there is really only one `Irish song', done in many different styles with many different combinations of lyrics and instruments. While I never totally subscribed to this theory, there is a sense in which there is a great sameness to the melodies of many Irish songs. This is probably what is meant by the `lilt' of Irish melodies. Oddly, I think it is probably harder to identify the nature of this `lilt' than it is to exactly define what distinguishes a blues song, which must be an iambic pentameter, exactly the same meter as Shakespeare's verses.
My most important message to non-Irish music fans is that you will like this album even if you have no taste for traditional Irish music. You will probably like it even if you don't like the Rolling Stones. Jagger's vocals on the title tune indicates how well he would do with other traditional material. I also have to say that Sinead O'Connor's performances on this album prompted me to get some of her albums, and I find her work alone is simply not quite as good as her two selections on this album.
Very highly recommended.

Recreating the ambience that made his 2002 outing, Pas de Chat Noir, so evanescent yet indelibly memorable, Tunisian oud master Brahem continues his by-now-well-established collaboration with François Couturier (piano) and Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion.) The trio's improvisations are miracles of weightless precision; while sounding like nobody else, they also evoke chanting medieval monks, Keith Jarrett's florid keyboard sagas, Parisian bal musette, the long-vanished Moorish kingdom of Granada via 20th-century Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, languid recollections of French impressionist Eric Satie plus dissonant gleanings from Astor Piazzolla's sardonic Argentinean neo-tangos. Despite this complex array of intellectual influences, which permeate the trio's constructions like smoke rings, their works come across as disarmingly simple and unpretentious, a tidily diffuse combination of Arabic modes, European classical disciplines and jazzy intuition. Liberated by sheer inventiveness, the trio's technical skill is so extreme that it has long since ceased to draw attention to itself. Instrumentalists of this caliber are long past needing to impress anyone but themselves. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Stunningly gorgeous.......2007-02-17
Having toured in support of that CD, the trio developed into a true group, something that Brahem accentuates to great effect on this program of new compositions and three favorites that are recast with the new ensemble.
With "Voyage" Brahem continues a trend of creating music that is not as overtly "jazzy" as some of his earlier outings.
Nonetheless, he remains a master a crafting deliciously vivid, richly evocative compositions that distill Arabic music and European jazz sensibilities with a warm, sonorous chamber music vibe.
Among the ports of call on this "Voyage" are "Zarabanda," whose elegant lope recalls the French Riviera.
Elsewhere the title track exudes mysticism tempered with intrigue, while "Cordoba" and "Ete Andalous" are meditative pieces with a decidedly cinematic scope. The gentle bounce of "Nuba" and introspection of "Les Jardins de Ziryab" both include uncredited but effective passages of voice.
Rarely do you hear music this gorgeous.

Customer Reviews:
Closer to the Main Street Singers than to the Dubliners or the Clancy Bros.......2006-03-25
Truly, absolutely, unlistenably passionless, cloying and bland.
The best of the Irish Rovers.......2006-03-09
the best christmas present.......2006-02-02
I'd personally like to thank Lily the Pink.......2005-08-29
THE ORANGE AND THE GREEN provides an amusing look at the difficulties involved in being the mixed offspring of Catholic Irish and Protestant Scottish-Irish parents ("being strictly neutral, I bashed everyone in sight!")while LILY THE PINK is an amusing story about the efficacy of a woman's medicinal compounds which were some less than expected: "Ebenezer thought he was Julius Caesar so they put him in a home and gave him medicinal compound, now he's Emperor of Rome!" They also cured an indivdual with a "terrible stammer" after which "he's s-s-seen but n-n-never heard."
And of course there is the slightly more subtle humor regarding Ms. Crandall's boarding house. One should just listen and enjoy.
Grab it with a copy of your favorite Gaelic Storm cd and laugh all your problems away.
