5 out of 5 stars Mother in law singing away.......2007-07-03

I made a lot of bonus points with my new mother-in law.
It has brought back a lot of memories for her. Great CD.

Thanks,

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Early Brenda Lee.......2007-04-20

I reccommend this product to anyone who was looking for themselves in the late 60's and early 70's. We were all looking for the fairy tale world and perfect love. It's a wonderful reminder.

It`s always nice to listen to good music connected to good memories.
Brenda Lee has this powerful, and soft voice that expresses the lyrics so brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars There's no one like Brenda Lee.......2006-01-21

This CD represents Brenda Lee at the peak of her musical powers,1959-63. Her sweet, bluesy southern voice is truly unique.I feel guilty making this comparison but she, in my opinion,is the female " Elvis" when it comes to interpreting a song. The mark of a true artist is the ability to excel beyond musical catagory. You can't peg her simply in one of these buckets( country, blues, gospel,R&B,rock ). She incorporates elements of all these influences but mixes them up in a musical stew that is truly unique. What makes the CD a classic is a "perfect musical storm". First the artist, then the material, musicians and production values.
I discussed the artist, now lets explore briefly the other success factors.
1.Writers like Ronnie Self,Jerry Reed, Mel Tillis and( who would of thought) Jackie DeShannon.
2. A pure production genius /legend, Owen Bradley
3. The early sixties Nashville studio and the studio musicians to numberous to mention. This assemblage of talent during this period has never been replicated in Nashville. Again, we tend to bucket artists. in this case, as if musicians residing in Nashville are only capable of playing C&W. Nonsense, these musicians, like any true great, were more then capable of playing any musical genre.
Sadly, Brenda never captured the magic on a consistent basis following this period. There's a wealth of reasons why but this isn't the time or place. It's just important to reinforce Brenda Lee and the recordings contained on this CD are classic and timeless. That is the key element that defines any great art that it transends time. Thank you Brenda.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly at its Best!.......2005-09-08

Brenda Lee shines like no other in this collection of hits....Careful selection and timeless melodies have proven a staying power for Brenda. Her songs ring as clear as they did in the 60's...If you like Brenda Lee, you'll love this collection!

Breanda Lee is truly one of a kind, one of the great female vocalists of our time, influencing many female vocalists of today.
Great many rarities include "My Whole World is Falling Down" and "Speak to Me Pretty"
wonderful cd, grab it if you can find it, a true gem! :)

5 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Brenda's music.......2005-02-21

Brenda Lee began her career, aged just eleven, in 1956, but did not have a British hit until 1960. In total, she had twenty-two UK hits between 1960 and 1965 but she had many more than that in America. Generally, the British public seem to prefer her up-tempo rockers while the American public seem to prefer her ballads. I am an exception to the general rule, being a Brit who likes her ballads best, although I enjoy her rocking songs too.

While many classic tracks are missing (for example, I want to be wanted, Emotions, Break it to me gently), this is only a budget-priced album and it does contain all of Brenda's British top ten hits. The biggest of these, Speak to me pretty, was never released as a single in America although I can't think why - it is a great song. Brenda's other UK top ten hits were Sweet nothings, Here comes that feeling, Rocking around the Christmas tree, All alone am I and As usual.

I'm sorry, Let's jump the broomstick, Dum dum, Fool number one, It started all over again and Sweet impossible you are the other British hits included here. Several others (including I wonder and Is it true, both of which made the UK top twenty) are omitted, but Jambalaya (the song that started Brenda's career in America) is here, along with several other great tracks.

For a comprehensive collection of Brenda's hits, you should go for the double CD, Anthology. However, because it is an American compilation, it omits Speak to me pretty. As an introduction to the music of the most important female rock'n'roll singer, this is excellent.

While this piece in the mid-priced Millennium Collection series is a condensation of the now out-of-print "Very Best Of" Brenda Holloway CD of just a few years ago, it does offer something to warrant purchase. Here, most of the tracks are the stereo versions of the songs that appeared in mono on that previous collection. Anyone familiar with Brenda Holloway knows that she was something of an anomaly in the Motown family of artists. Her music often reached beyond the formula approach that confined some of the other acts to come out of the Detroit-based label. One listen to the tracks on this CD such as her original version of "You've Made Me So Very Happy" will illustrate this. But make no mistake, she did tow the Motown line with tunes such as the Smokey Robinson-penned "When I'm Gone" and "Operator". If you already have the "Very Best Of" piece then you already have everything here song-wise but here you do get the stereo versions that offer a more captivating listening experience. While the sound quality is not revelatory, it is decent and for the stereo fan, justifies purchase. Accompanying the disc is an eight-page flopover liner notes booklet with track details and a brief personal bio. While offering her fans no additional Holloway material, at least this piece does keep her material in print on CD and provides the opportunity for those unfamiliar with her music to discover it.

      5 out of 5 stars Okay, it's short... But it's in STEREO!!!!.......2003-08-01

Although this is a short CD, the entire Millenium series only contains 11 or 12 tracks per CD. Within that context, this is an EXCELLENT collection of Brenda Holloway's tracks. The excellent Very Best of version contained Brenda's mono masters. This one contains the STEREO masters, many on CD for the first time! If you are a Brenda Holloway fan, get both. If I had to choose one, I'd pick this one, because I'm a stereo fanatic. Hey Brenda, You've mad me so very happy. I'm so glad you came into my life!!! Thanks for the musical memories.

Brenda Russell is both an incredibly gifted songwriter and one of the smoothest R&B divas of our time--unfortunately, she has never received her due recognition and respect. This UK-only compilation features both charted hit singles and superb LP-only tracks as well as liner notes written by Brenda herself. Brenda is one of the few artists who (to my knowledge) has never made a bad record. Buy this great CD now--please!!!

Holloway was one of several female Motown artists who never broke through to the top level of stardom, or even of the company's concern. Nevertheless, her Very Best collects many terrific records that often avoid the Detroit formula: "Every Little Bit Hurts" and other ballads actually bring to mind Jerry Ragovoy's dramatic productions for Howard Tate and Lorraine Ellison, while Holloway's performance on the original "You've Made Me So Very Happy" is one of the label's greatest late-1960s vocals. This CD's 1999 release coincided with a Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award for Holloway; these two events should, with any justice, lead to more recognition for this excellent singer. --Rickey Wright

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Brenda Holloway--a superb singer........2006-02-20

A lot has been said of Brenda Holloway's being pushed into becoming Motown's succesor to the departed Mary Wells.....but, Brenda herself positioned herself at a record company convention in Los Angeles in hopes of meeting Motown founder Berry Gordy.

Yes, Brenda , complete with tight fitting gold lame pant suit, was lip syncing to a Mary Wells' record to Berry Gordy at that convention. She didn't know he WAS Berry Gordy at the time. She thought he was too young to be him. But Gordy was impressed and he signed her!
Her very first release, "Every Little Bit Hurts" was a smash!
It was written and recorded in Los Angeles.....a first for Motown.
The follow up "I'll Always Love You" didn't fair as well on the charts, but it was a great record.
Her next release was a song Smokey Robinson had already cut on Mary Wells just before she left Motown for a huge cash advance from 2oth Century Fox Records. That song, "When I'm Gone", was a
big hit, peaking at #25 pop.
The follow up, "Operator" had been the flip side of Mary Wells' hit,"Two Lovers". Brenda slowed it down; turning the light hearted ditty into a sultry soulful romp.
After a few more low charting releases, Brenda left Motown.
I disagree that Brenda's original "You've Made Me So Very Happy" was so much better than Blood,Sweat & Tears version. The latter version had a powerful punch added to the mix by their solid horn section. Brenda's was a lilting lullaby in parts.
Here we have all of Brenda's Tamla singles collected together in one CD.
She was an original. She definitely had a voice!
And Brenda's "When I'm Gone" was far superior to Mary Wells' effort. (check out Wells' version in "Mary Wells: The Ultimate Collection")

      5 out of 5 stars Good summation at Motown's most under-rated artist.......2001-11-09

Upon her signing in early 1964, Brenda Holloway became Motown's first West Coast artist. With Hal Davis producing, she had her biggest hit right off the bat: the dramatic ballad "Every Little Bit Hurts." Its follow-up "I'll Always Love You" is more of the same: a broken hearted Brenda sensually belting it out to the stark accompaniment of acclaimed pianist Lincoln Mayorga. Motown then brought Holloway to Detroit to record with Smokey Robinson, who paired her with musical tracks originally intended for the recently departed Mary Wells. The uptempo "When I'm Gone," "Operator," and "I'll Be Available" are certainly departures from Holloway's initial hits. And while all three records are delightful, it is obvious that she was
encouraged to emulate Wells' less seductive sound and narrow range. Fortunately, she was able to cut loose vocally with producer Frank Wilson on her final hits, "Just Look What You Have Done" and the self-penned "You've Made Me So Very Happy."

The aforementioned hits are all found here, along with such noncharting (but fantastic) singles "Hurt A Little Everyday," "You Can Cry On My Shoulder," and "Together Till The End Of Time." What makes this collection better than her previous retrospective, Motown's 1991 Holloway CD Greatest Hits And Rare Classics, is the inclusion of "Every Little Bit Hurts" haunting B-side "Land Of A Thousand Boys" and the debut on CD of "Til Johnny Comes." As evidenced by a great Holloway retrospective released in Belgium a couple of years ago, there is still about a dozen more great Holloway tracks (including the Public Service Announcement song "Be Cool, Stay In School!") which have never been released domestically. Write Motown and demand their release!

4 out of 5 stars Welcome Motown rarity.......2001-08-05

With so many repetitive CDs of Motowns big acts in the market, it's a welcome event when one of their lesser known but better talents sees the light of day on CD. Brenda Holloway was perhaps a bit too sophisticated for the Motown formula approach. They just couldn't find the right place for her in their organization and consequently she did not enjoy the success of many of the other acts that Motown would build into hit machines. Her work with Smokey Robinson showed her potential but there was just no follow-through. "When I'm Gone" shows how her singing coupled with Robinson's extraordinary lyrics and music could have led to much greater things. "I'll Be Available", another Robinson tune that was relegated to the B-side of the "Operator" follow-up again shows how the Robinson-Holloway pairing was worth developing. This collection gathers up the best of her work for Motown and includes all six of her pop-charted singles. All tracks are the mono versions and the sound quality is reasonably good given the tendency for muddiness in the early Motown recordings. The six-page flopover booklet includes a brief musical history as told by Holloway along with track details. A well-constructed overview of one of Motown's most distinguished yet least recognized talents.

4 out of 5 stars Motown's Forgotten Siren Of Song.......2001-05-11

Brenda Holloway was a beautiful young singer with a gorgeous voice, who started her recording career at Motown in 1964. She was always (in some ways) linked to other superstar female acts at the label, but she never was able to make the hurdle to super-stardom for herself. This collection has all of her career highlights. It's sad that there weren't more of them. "Every Little Bit Hurts" was a poignant ballad with crystal-clear imagery, written by Ed Cobb. It did very well on the Pop chart (#13), at a time when there was no Billboard Soul chart. It might have been a soul chart-topper. Brenda needed a follow-up hit, and she benefitted from Mary Wells' departure from Motown. Just as The Supremes were given the hits that Holland-Dozier-Holland had lined up for Wells, Brenda was given the Smokey Robinson-penned material. "When I'm Gone" and "Operator" were both already in the can on Mary Wells, but never saw the light of day as recorded by her. Brenda's version of "When I'm Gone" was another major hit (#12 R&B, #25 Pop). Smokey took over the reins of Brenda's career at that point. (Ed Cobb went on to write for another Motown newcomer, Gladys Knight, who even recorded a cover of "Every Little Bit Hurts.") But another hit was not in the offing, despite good material, and a planned second album was not released (the "Every Little Bit Hurts" album did well). Part of Brenda's problem at Motown was that every female at the label who wasn't Diana Ross, was considered to be second-tier (or even third-tier). Another, was being from Los Angeles, while the Motown machine was still in Detroit. Flying in from the coast to record vocals, is different from total involvement in a production. This was shown on her last big hit, the L.A.-recorded and Frank Wilson-produced, "Just Look What You've Done." This record was a sensation upon release, making it to #21 R&B, while inexplicably stalling at #69 Pop. Wilson did a good job of fashioning a Supremes-like sound for Holloway; so good, in fact, that when H-D-H left Motown, Wilson was chosen to be the next producer on The Supremes. (They hit big with his "Stoned Love" and "Up The Ladder To The Roof.") But that left Brenda Hollway, once again, without a producer. Brenda's next single on the Tamla label was her last. It was produced by Berry Gordy, himself, in a relaxed style-- kind of halfway between a pop standard and a soulful torch song. Brenda wrote the song, and would have preferred a more upbeat approach. Her single just reached the top 40 of both the Pop and R&B charts. But a blue-eyed soul group picked up the song and turned up the tempo, making it into a #1 Pop smash. The group was Blood, Sweat & Tears, and the song was "You've Made Me So Very Happy." Many, many covers of the song followed, so while Brenda Holloway saw her recording career come to an end just four years after it started, she also started to see some very healthy royalty checks in her mailbox twice a year!

      5 out of 5 stars what a voice.......2000-03-30

like rich warm choclate. thats what Brenda`s voice reminds me of. on this cd none of the music seems dated because of her soulful interpertation.every little bit hurts still steals the show. too bad brenda didn`t get the backing some of the other motown artist got. her music really is timeless.

        5 out of 5 stars Engaging.......2006-05-31

I have to preface this review with the statement that I do not usually like folk music. My girlfriend listened to this and after a few listens I was hooked. Brenda has a great sense of melody, and her compositions are strong and memorable.

I also had the honor of seeing her in concert recently. She was simply incredible.

5 out of 5 stars A CD That You Just Like More and More.......2003-12-13

Not typically being a fan of the folk-type music genre, I was taken in by Brenda's voice and vocal abilities. I've now been a fan of Brenda's for some time. When I first listened to Cold Weather, I was not immediately enamored. However, after the fourth or fifth time, this CD has become one of my favorites. The songs run the gamut from the soft and sweet Sacred to the dynamic Scatter. All with Brenda's unique perspectives.

The only thing better than listening to Brenda's CD's is attending a live performance. Seeing her facial expressions and hearing her unbelievable voice make it an incredible experience.

4 out of 5 stars New sounds for old fans.......2003-11-26

I've been a Brenda fan for years. Was a bit taken aback by all the new bells and whistles -- I'm used to Brenda and her guitar and her great big voice! -- but after a few days of heavy rotation in the laptop, I'm fully behind this album.

"Out of the Blue" and "Medicine" (formerly "Swimming") are favorites from the live album. "Christmas Sweater," in my opinion, is the new star and the duet on "Honolulu, Minnesota" is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Buy Brenda Weiler's New CD!!!!!!!!.......2003-11-25

If you haven't listened to Brenda Weiler yet, you are truly missing out. I was introduced to her music in college, and I loved it instantly. She is an outstanding performer. Her shows are awesome, but it's her music that keeps me coming back for more. She has a clear, beautiful, pure voice and her lyrics are very thoughtful and deep. All of her CDs are on constant play in my car, at home and at work.

Her new CD, "Cold Weather", is outstanding. It is completely different from her other CDs, but it is equally as good, if not better, then anything else she has released. Her previous releases were more folk and acoustic. She uses a band for, I think, all but two songs on "Cold Weather". (She used many of the same artists/producers on her CD "Fly Me Back".) It does not detract from her music at all but enhances her amazing voice and honest lyrics.

Please, pick up this CD. You will not regret it! If you like indie, folk/rock female artists, you will not go wrong with Brenda Weiler.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful... again.......2003-11-25

This disc is as amazing as the previous 4. Some of the songs, previously on the Live album, have so much more emotion which proves the dynamics of Brenda. All of her discs are wonderful as well as seeing her live performances.
