About the Artist
Garth Harvey AKA Sun Ras, was born in San Juan, Trinidad. At a young age he was exposed to the Caribbean Music scene with his steady vibrations from the bass steel drums. His musical career blossomed from a talented violin player as a child, to a steel drummer as a teenager and young adult, to a lyricist and vocalist. Sun Ras carries a great deal of weight under his musical belt. He has written about 95 songs, and has recorded about 20 of them. Since relocating from Trinidad to the United States, he has been in and out of the music scene. He has an appitude for all flavors of music, but relishes the blend of calypso, soca, latin, and modern jazz. His love for music has allowed him to commit 2 years of his life to full time studies in music practice and theory at Southwest College in Los Angeles, earning himself a Certificate of Completion in music studies. Sun Ras has arranged steel drum music for the Tropical Percussioners, a Los Angeles based all steel drum orchestra. He espouses a unique style in steel drum music arrangement that reaches beyond the traditonal pan-yard style. Some of the hit songs in his repertoire include "Kalypso Man," Savannah Jam Down," "Nelson Mandella," and his most recent "Good Bye 1999," a pulsating SocaLypso blend augmented with contemporary jazz, latin and rap mix. His music idols include Trinidadian Lord Melody and The Mighty Terror.
