5 out of 5 stars This group is awesome!!! .......2006-07-03

I just listened to the whole CD and I love it!!! The sounds of Lola's Theme are just awesome, love singing to it on the car on my way home, and always makes me smile and seat dance. Back to basics is another one of my favorites as well as Incredible.
This whole CD is great, if you liked Lola's Theme or any of the other singles is a deffinitely must to buy it :D.

5 out of 5 stars A Thank You For The Great Advice!.......2006-06-30

Well what can I say!? It is about time this album was released... ever since I heard "Lola's Theme", I couldn't believe my ears. Was it the new Basement Jaxx single? Was it by Silicone Soul? No. The groundbreaking "Lola's Theme" was in fact by two London-based DJs Simon Marlin and Max Reich who made up The Shapeshifters. And then came "Back To Basics" and I thought to myself, when are these guys actually gonna release an album!? I want more from where this came from.

Released March this year, Sound Advice is The Shapeshifters massive debut. Think of Sound Advice as The Shapeshifters' contribution to dance music as was Keane's contribution to rock with Hopes & Fears. That's just how powerful this album is.

From opener, "You Never Know" until the last track, "Instead of Falling", Sound Advice never disappoints for a split second. Apart from the aforementioned tracks, the other two singles off this album, the ever-funky "Incredible" and the catchy "Sensitivity", are of course extremely impressive. But don't worry, I assure you every single track on this album is single-worthy... there just isn't a single filler in here.

For fans of funky house, this album is not to be missed. Get it right now and start enjoying this masterpiece of an album as soon as you can.

    4 out of 5 stars A solid debut.......2006-04-01

Alright, if you are reading this review it's because you've stumbled upon the Shapeshifter's debut album, while taking a glance around to see what this site has to offer. I am going to assume, also, that you've at least heard their HUGE summer '04 smash, Lola's Theme. Perhaps not, perhaps you know them from their song Back To Basics, under the moniker Shape:UK. Or perhaps, even more unlikely, you know them by their current amazing single, Incredible. Whatever the reasons, here we both are.

Now, you look at the price of this CD and wonder, should I? Is it worth it? I daresay it is, but perhaps that isn't enough for you. Why, that you're even reading this review as opposed to processing the transaction this very second is all the proof I need that you need some convincing. So I shall start at the beginning.

The Shapeshifters have almost molded the scene to suit them, much like Madonna does to the pop scene. House music wouldn't be where it is today without the instant success of Lola's Theme, and that's saying a lot. They continue to be a breath of fresh air, providing something new and refreshing amid a stale scene. This album is no exception.

From the getgo, this album sets out to prove that there is so much more to the dance, and subsequently, house, genre than meets the eye or ear. Take the opening track, You Never Know. Most listeners would expect to open up to a dancefloor smash, their booty shaking almost immediately after pressing "play". But what do the Shapeshifters do? They give us a pop track, slower with beautiful vocals, lush synths and bass, and a great lyrical hook. And what is it about? Wow, she says, "It might be the last time you close your eyes." Take a chance, take a risk. What an amazing message, the very first song.

But don't worry, the latest dance craze is but a song away, in the form of the string & guitar-driven Sensitivity. About half the album has actual vocals, and while those tracks are interesting enough, it is tracks like these that make the album shine. You'll find yourself singing along in no time, bopping around wherever you are, regardless of what you are doing. Lola's Theme and Incredible follow (check my other reviews for an in-depth of Incredible), and then on to the track Really Feel. This song has a smidgeon of vocals, but it is more of a showcase of their music rather than their lyrical skills, or the skills of their amazing vocalists, Cookie, Jenna Gibbons, Kelly Marie, and an assortment of others. Over Me is the next song, and it starts off beautifully with a simple drum beat, shortly joined with a beautiful string arrangement and some effects. This is another great slower, more pop-oriented track. The great thing is that all of these songs would sound great if remixed (properly, that is), but sound amazing even without any.

The album follows in that general progression, although the next few tracks are mainly instrumental, with some slower vocal tracks bringing up the end of the album. All in all, this album is like a pleasant beach vacation, the perfect mood to a perfect day.

And heed the advice given in "You Never Know". Take a risk and pick this up.

      Album Description

If your idea of hip hop involves spinning on dubs and iced-out medallions, this album isn't for you. But if you lean more towards conspiracy theories, aliens and the unknown, then listen up. After solo projects by members AWOL One, Circus & Existereo, the entire Shapeshifters crew returns with Was Here, their fourth album (and debut on Cornerstone RAS). With scratches by DJ LA Jae, these seven MCs leave no stone unturned in their lyrical assault on all things holy (and undead). Was Here also features guest MCs Slug (Atmosphere), Busdriver, 2Mex and Pigeon John adding their unique vocal stylings and deliveries to the fold. The Shapeshifters' style is unlike any you have ever heard. This album may forever change the way you look at the world. You have been warned. And, if you already know the Shifters, expect to be blown away by how far they've come on this mind-numbing new album.

5 out of 5 stars finally organised the madness.......2005-03-18

The shapeshifters have always been dope. But to the casual listener it wasn't exactly easy listening.

The shapeshifters finally focused all of the energy of this multi-faceted L.A. graff true hiphop crew and dropped a really really good record.

The lyrics are tight and just spacey whacky enough without going overboard. The beats are great and the new-wave 80s influence is actually pretty refreshing for some usually dark beats.

Ive listened to this over and over since i got it at amoeba. i definitely suggest going out and getting this disc right now. go support your local record store and don't buy it online.

        4 out of 5 stars Nifty........2006-03-25

I did not like this song at all when I first listened to it, majorly unimpressed with the lack of energy or anything resembling something danceable. Although, I keep an open mind and gave it a second attempt, finding it was actually pretty decent.

Personally I favor the original mixes, both radio and extended. It is just...I don't know, more beautiful than any of the remixes. The Shapeshifters themselves provide the Nocturnal Mix, which is probably going to be the big remix used from this single. It removes the guitars and plants in some violins, gives it a more progressive dance beat, but overall lacks the soul of the original mixes. Denis the Menace & Jerry Ropero provide us with a vocal mix suited for the dancefloor, dark and mysterious and full of club-friendly beats. Mark Knight & Martin Ten Velden give us a dark electro mix which really kills the beauty and allure of the lyrics. The Mardel & Mohawk mix gives us a stripped-down electro-house with filtered vocals.

Like I said, the original mixes are the winners here.

5 out of 5 stars Another awesome offering!.......2001-12-16

This album should appeal to anyone with eclectic tastes, and from its prior offerings, this group makes music most of us will definitely enjoy for a long time to come! You want to get psyched? Mellowed? Jazzed? Tranced? This album is it. I've heard their previous offerings, and if you open some doors and let it roll, and you might find that you have gone somewhere you'd want to visit again! This interdimensional musical cruise by an extraordinary group is the latest offering of hybrid multi-ethnic wave forms, and if you give it a try, it could weave its magic in a special moment you're sharing with someone you actually care about!

4 out of 5 stars Alain Eskinasi at his best.......2001-11-12

Don't confuse these guys with the hip-hop band of the same name. This group is a top-notch world fusion ensemble whose leader, Alain Eskinasi, is one of the great messengers of world fusion music. He's recorded under his own name, with this group, with Brainscapes, with Professor Trance, and is a member of Third Force as well, and was an original member of one of the first Afro-fusion groups, Soto Koto. He's a multi-instrumentalist who plays all manner of percussion, bass, guitar, and keyboards, and who's a groovemaster supreme.

This album picks up where the group's first (on a tiny label, not readily available) left off, and it's a welcome addition to the world fusion repertoire. Aside from Eskinasi, the other folks include the husband-wife team of Aziz and Khabira Paige and Richard Hardy. Aziz plays sitar and guitar, Khabira plays tambura, and Richard's reeds include flute, sax, and clarinet.

The group is complemented on several tracks by various vocalists and by didgeridoo as well. If you love world fusion, this is a terrific example of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great soothing grooves man!.......2000-11-22

Okay, so that sounds like I'm a hippie or something, but really, this item is fantastic! Just look at the cover (I love looking at covers!) Doesn't it just tell you it's good? Well, It is! It's fabulous! I highly recommend it if you're an Enigma fanatic, Like myself, or if you simply just want to listen to something relaxing. Try it, I garentee you will be happy you have, and if you're not, you probably can't recognize good music when you here it. So if you like enya, enigma, david lanz, mythos, yanni, sacred spirt, pure moods, delerium, or anything else I've forgotten, give it a shot.

These crazy LA kids really know how to tweak your eardrums with real life daytime drama. If you are anyone you have to own a copy of the Shapeshifters albums, stickers, posters and gear. That's right they have gear, fresh-dip gear.

4 out of 5 stars My brain just exploded........2002-01-13

First I would like to say, I'm from LA and I see emcees like AWOL one and Circus rip mics up and down the Cali coast all the time. Out here our funkee and charismatic beats laced with insane lyricism is inconceivable. If your not from the Westcoast you should visit. I guarantee you will leave with a higher understanding of how deep Hip Hop can go. This album "Adopted by Aliens" is some of the illest, sickest, cleanest, intergalactic Hip Hop out. After listening to this album, I now know being wierd and conceptually smart is the coolest... Oh yeah, pick up "Know Future" which is the Shapeshifter album before this one. Go to celestialrecordings.com and check it out. curbserver.com too while your at it. Late. Rest in Peace DJ Rob One. We know your talented soul shines over us all.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty far out there, but decent.......2001-05-31

This is a pretty weird album... yes, indeed. The LA-based Shapeshifters Crew appears to be mostly white, and it comes out in their spaced-out, sci-fi rhymes and chasing beats. Think a step or two beyond Kool Keith's Black Elvis... that's what I'm shooting for.

But there are some serious tracks on this CD. The opener, "Who's Got Presents?" rolls along with a slick bassline and some hilarious rhymes. "Prevail," "Reiterate" and "Flossin'" are also good tracks with some nice lyrical work.

Too many tracks, however, are a little too off-the-wall for this reviewer at least. Tracks with names like "Mos Eisley," "Hootie and the Brainfish," and "Words of Wizdumb" are just begging to consist of nonsensical loops and even stranger rhymes.

This CD isn't underground, it's so far above ground it's in outer space. If you're a Kool Keith fan, this could be for you. For the average hip-hopper, it might be a little too far out there.

5 out of 5 stars if you haven't yet heard of the legendary shapeshifters crew.......2001-04-25

then you must be like most of the other folks in the world who are sad folks who have not yet heard of the shapeshifters and what they do for the world which is the only thing worthwhile for the world which is the brave undoing and the brave speech-giving of monumental and even transubstantial importance, by means of hippo-dromatic rhythmics and super-annuated lower psychosis, braced between botany and solar technocracy, their rhymes being rhymes or not rhymes but political bugs bunny to the socially sickened and otherwise depraved sons and daughters of the erstwhile yosemite. please donate your blessed ears to the shapeshifters. it was my brother who turned me to the darkside and back through the influence of the holy ghostly awol-one, and then I could not help but continue my quest by embracing all the rest of all the other brothers. the freestyle sessions are very dear, but this album is, I believe, the grandest achievement, the beginning to the end, looking always to the beginning of the end and the ending of the beginning of the rebirthing cycle. Not to be overlooked. But please to be listened to, comrades. What else would you prefer to be infected with?

5 out of 5 stars BEST SHAPESHIFTER CD IN THE WORLD!!.......2000-12-28
