5 out of 5 stars The Masters of Classical Arabic Music.......2006-05-24

Culled from the archives of EMI Arabia, this series is dedicated to showcasing the fabulous talent of classical Arabic musicians to the world at large. On two discs, we are presented with wonderful performances from eight of the Arab world's master musicians. The first disc includes incredible vocal work from Algerian-born diva Warda, the famous Abdel Halim Hafez of Egypt, Syria's Mayada el Hennawy and best of all, legendary Lebanese singer Fairouz, all backed by full orchestras. Meanwhile, the second disc includes performances by Egytian performers Mohammad Abdul Wahab, Hamid el-Shari, Layla Mourad and Oum Kalthoum, the MOTHER of Arabic classical music. Keeping with Arabic tradition, the songs tend to be fairly long (about 10 minutes or so on average), so you can truly enjoy each performance.

If you love Arabic or Middle Eastern music, particularly the classical styles, this CD is well worth adding to your collections. It gives a very good survey of some of the most important names in Arabic classic music; artists who are loved and respected across the Arabic-speaking world, like Fairouz, Mohammed Abdul Wahab, Abdul Halim Hafez, Warda and Oum Kalthoum. Keep in mind this is only the second CD in the series. There are a couple other compilations, along with re-releases of several important classical Arabic CDs. All essential for any lover of Arabic classical music.
