The Daktaris are actually several alumni from Fela Kuti's band, and as expected, Soul Explosion contains massive chunks of throbbing Afrobeat, the style perfected by the late Nigerian performer. Part Nigerian and part American funk à la James Brown, these 10 mostly instrumental tracks are hardcore, juju-headed time bombs from the dance floor of the motherland, with a baritone sax-fronted horn section riding earthshaking rhythms, thundering bass lines, and occasional wah-wah guitar. Except for classic workouts on Fela's "Upside Down," James Brown's "Give It Up, Turn It Loose," and the rare "Musicawa Silt" from Ethiopia's Wallias Band, these are all original tunes from a 15-strong ensemble that charges straight at you like a herd of elephants, absolutely unstoppable. Hopefully, any future release from this outfit will extend the group's monumental grooves beyond a five-minute format, which most of these Lagos-produced tracks fit into. --Derek Rath

It was inescapable - to listen to a.m. radio in the summer of '67 and not be hit with that oh-so-identifiable intro to "Little Bit O' Soul". Though a follow-up single managed to scrape the lower reaches of the top-100, the Music Explosion is by necessity dubbed a one-hit wonder. Not unusually, a group, the Music Explosion included, achieves commercial success only when they veer from their innate style and accept performing what the music-buying public of the time will purchase. Hooking up with the bubblegum music kings Kasenetz and Katz proved to provide ME that fame, if only temporary. Ironically, with little follow-up success to "...Soul", the group declined to accept a song they felt was over-the-top novelty fare. That song, "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" was to put the Ohio Express on the map big time in '68. Personnel changes contributed to the lack of continuity and further success for the Music Explosion and they were gone from the music-buying public's radar as quickly as they had appeared. This collection gathers up their Laurie recordings and while it contains their signature "Little Bit O' Soul", the vast majority of these tracks reflect their garage/punk style in contrast to their visible commercial, quasi bubblegum-styled success on the charts. This generous 24-track compilation contains their hit and failed singles along with several album cuts. Excellently produced with mastering by Bob Irwin at Sundazed, the sound quality is as good as could be expected with the "Little Bit O' Soul" lp tracks (1-12) in stereo, the remainder in mono. This piece replaces the One Way "Music Explosion" Anthology piece, now out of print, from the 90's. With the title cut found on compilations elsewhere, and little else familiar to the casual listener, this piece is basically for the more intent collector.

+1/2 -- Definitive collection of mid-60s one-hit wonders.......2003-02-05

Like so many '60s garage bands, Ohio's Music Explosion had but one song who's catchiness and timing intersected with the whims of the American Top-40. But unlike many other one-hit wonders, the Explosion actually managed to record several other fine singles, as well as an entire album that was fleshed out with more than the usual filler.

The band's rock and soul roots were amply expressed through lead-singer Jamie Lyons, supplemented by both the band's line-up, and on several of the album tracks, polished studio hands. What makes the Music Explosion's music so unique is the intersection of their garage origin with the production talent of Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz. The combination resulted in music with DIY grit, but manicured to a higher polish than some of the Explosion's Nuggets and Pebbles-memorialized contemporaries.

Kasenetz and Katz ("Super K") would move on to bubblegum glory (notably, The Ohio Express' iconic, "Yummy Yummy Yummy," first offered to the Music Explosion, and whose intro is shared by the Explosion's latter-day single "Yes Sir"), but they clearly polished up their production techniques with the Music Explosion. In particular, many of the album's backing tracks were recorded by studio musicians while the band was on tour. Tracks such as Bo Gentry and Ritchie Cordell's "We Gotta Go Home" are virtual prototypes for Super K's bubblegum run, and though fluffy fun, aren't nearly as compelling as the harder-edged work.

Leading off the collection is the band's indelible hit single, "Little Bit O' Soul." Having peaked at #2, it's intro riff, repeated throughout the song, is supported by a moving bass line, thrashing drum work and a hook-filled lyric. They add up to the very essence of a top-40 pop hit. Listener's may be a bit disconcerted by the full, balanced stereo production, but a flick of the stereo/mono switch will help recreate your car's dashboard speaker. The song's original A-side, "I See the Light" follows with a top-notch slice of garage soul, fully realized with an emotional tough-but-tender vocal, and subtle guitar and backing vocals.

Elsewhere the band shows off influences of The Who ("Everybody" borrows liberally from "Can't Explain"), The Lovin' Spoonful's jug-band sound ("Good Time Feeling"), and The Rolling Stones (Kasenetz-Katz's "Let Yourself Go," filtering "Tobacco Road" through the Stones impression of The Isley Brothers). The band covered contemporary garage tunes such as The Nightcrawlers' "Little Black Egg" (as well as a lyric rewrite, "One Potato Two," that's nearly as enigmatic) and ? and the Mysterians "96 Tears."

Other Kasenetz-Katz tunes, like "Can't Stop Now" and "(Hey) La, La, La" show off what a great dance sound the band (and its studio hands) could produce. The Stax-like rhythms, horns, fuzz guitars and background vocals provided terrific backing for Lyons' impassioned vocals. If only for the right promotion or adventurous radio programmer, many of these songs could have struck chart gold. The lone original, "Stay By My Side," combines a folky edge with fuzz guitar for a Beau Brummels like sound.

Sundazed's collection adds three B-side instrumentals to the CD world, including Kasenetz-Katz's neo-psychedelic "Road Runner" (with pseudo-Indian noodlings that bring to mind early Red Crayola), and the organ and guitar buzz of "Hearts and Flowers" and "Dazzling." Glenn Barton's liner notes, including interviews with original band members, are superbly detailed and informative, and photos and graphics from the band's archives help flesh out their visual image. Though the charts called them one-hit wonders, The Music Explosion' s catalog is deeper than "Little Bit O' Soul," and this collection is the definitive recitation.

Some of the greatest dub albums are jam sessions. Think of Lee "Scratch" Perry's genius Black Ark recordings in the '70s or Adrian Sherwood's early experiments in noise with On-U Sound. New York City punk-soul outfit Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Dub Narcotic's salaciously deep-voiced producer Calvin Johnson had already recorded together at Johnson's Olympia studios for JSBX's 1998 album, Acme. Around the same time, during a two-day session, the artists laid down the nine tracks that comprise this loose, sprawling, eminently lovable studio album. JSBX was the house band, Johnson the mischievous frontman. So what d'ya get? Plenty of echoed harmonica, deep bass drums, James Brown-style squeals, and lyrics that focus mostly on food and being cool ("Banana Meltdown," "Chicken Legs," "Frosty Junction"). "If you come to my town," Calvin sings on the 10-minute funkafied "Fudgy the Whale," "you've got to know all 16 dances." Damn right! --Everett True

I love JSBX, but Dub Narcotic is lame. Skip it, this shizzle aint worth a free download, let alone $14.98. If you want JSBX dub remixes, do it yerself, skip this tripe.

Love Ain't On The Run........2001-02-21

I can tell you one thing I loved this record! It's like one big jam session. It features some new tracks as well as some re-worked tracks from xtra acme USA. I loved Xtra acme as well as Acme and this album seems to go deeper inside these albums getting a more gritty sound. Calvin Johnson from Dub Narcotic sound system does a lot of lead vocal work on this while Spencer shouts in the background in agreement to Johnson's ramblings, giving encouragement in his Elvis in heat vocal style.

Johnson's vocal style is more out there in fact that it doesn't work but it does, you know in the context of this album he is a good singer his deep voice goes with the vibe. You may remember his collaboration with Beck on One foot in the grave his voice was put to good use as it is on this album where we get a kinda Johnny Cash kinda thing going on in tracks like Love ain't on the run and Fudgy the whale. So all and all this is in my opinion a top album.

Like always the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion compines their punk funk blues to make for a great time. Though not alone this time- The Dub Narcotic Sound System joins them to make some of the most freeborn expressionalism rock this world has ever known. Guaranteed to keep your feet tapping. However, there are some things that drag this CD down. During Frosty Junction there is a small annoying melodica solo and Chicken Legs has an distorted echo effect to Calvin's voice, both taking away from the song. On most every song Calvin sings lead. For those that haven't ever heard him, he sounds like a Beck that can't (or doesn't try to) sing right... who cares though- The CD sounds really good for those who like rough jammin' - Go For It!

Too much soul (especially for the price ! ! !).......2007-05-05

This is a great compilation of early 70's SOUL sides - - You'll feel like its 1974 all over again and you're listen to some really good Black AM radio (o.k. I was quite young then, but still I'm a big fan of the air checks!) - - Though the artists aren't quite obscure, they are rare enough that finding them all together on one CD makes this is super/must have find for fans of soul that is sweet yet funky at the same side... groups include Crown Heights Affair, The Honey Cone, Chairmen of the Board, Fatback, Lamont Dozier - - sort of a roster full of groups that had their moments, especially in the era when the Philly International sound was setting the standards and EVERYONE was copying it- - This CD is great because it stands out in stark contrast to the "rare funk"/funky break beat that have the rare gritty stuff that DJs wet their pants to hear at one extreme of the spectrum and in contrast the over-reissued "greatest hits of the 70's" type compilations (that all have the same tunes and groups) - - walking a much sweeter road this CD catches a lot of groups that at one time were pretty mainstream in the world of Black Radio and dance music, but today at best are either long disbanded or oldies circuit rarities - - to put it more simply, if you came up listening to this music, you'll probably remember a lot of the stuff, as well as hear a few tunes you always wondered "Who did that?" - - and if you're new the sound, you'll definitely get an education.

All in all, if you're a fan of Curtis, Leroy Hutson, Willie Hutch, the O'Jays (and again, definitely the Philly sound) - - welcome to one of the most PLEASING compilations you'll ever here... In the meantime, when in the world is Don Cornelius going to reisuse all those '70s SOUL TRAIN episodes which were playing in repeat several years ago here in Japan?

Good flow, but a little repetitive.......2007-07-19

The first song (which is the same as the second) reminds me of the song they play in the movie Broken Flowers with Bill Murray. Anyways this cd does consist of some good afro-funk, but does not venture too much musically (Best aspect = the guitar, holding it down with the wah). I think I expected a little more even though I know it's supposed to be simple. Also the give it up turn it loose cover isn't as good as i'd hoped. If you're into Fela Kuti, and other afro funk or funk in general then this would be a good pick up. But I wouldn't pay some of the outrageous prices that I have seen it selling for. I'd say you can defintely get it for less than $13.

Very Explosive!.......2007-07-04

I bought this album at the going out of business sale at Tower Records for like 2 dollars. And oh my God what a steal!!! I picked it up because the cover was so hot and intimidating and I was pleased to see that it was on the Daptone label and hoped that it could live up to my level of curiosity driven arousal. I was not let down. I was let up and up and up. The first track on this album is like the Sexiest, Baddest, Funkiest theme song-esque afrobeat song created this side of 1975. I felt empowered. I felt like a sexy lionness about to go in for the kill. Oh yeah. I don't know much about this group. I don't bother much anymore with biographies or who's in the band or whatever but I can certainly say that this release lives up to the high quality of ridiculously A+ funk you would expect from any Daptone Release.
The rest of the album just keeps going and going and going. Very Fela inspired and authentic and just the best party album for summer time barbeques and beer and booty shakin. Just do it
