4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, But Not a Good Starting Point.......2007-06-07

For those who were there in their heyday, Ed's Redeeming Qualities were one of the standout acts of the 90s. The music could best be described as "folk," but Ed's weren't a bunch of fusty old mountain goats forcing their listeners through another rendition on "Shady Grove."

These guys were true hipsters, bringing in elements of calypso, ska, and even country/punk in their most inventive moments. I saw them live a couple of times, and both events are stellar musical memories.

AT THE FISH AND GAME CLUB is Ed's final album, and there are some outstanding moments to be heard here. We get our first studio recordings of fan favorites such as "Mom," "Scrambled Eggs," and "My Friend Bob," all of which are given outstanding treatments on this CD.

Unfortunately, this album suffers from a massive lack of production. There are moments when the instruments are out of tune with each other, or the singer hits some shockingly off-key notes. For virgin listeners, this album can come off as similar to the "outisider music" of artists such as Daniel Johnston or The Shaggs. However, listeners eager to experience a true authentic recording might find these elements charming.

For newcomers, I would recommend starting off with "More Bad Times," "It's All Good News" or the live "The Big Grapefruit Cleanup Job." But if you're already familiar with Ed's, listening to this album is like welcoming back an old friend.

4 out of 5 stars An intriguing album with more than its share of moments.......2001-07-08

Ed's Redeeming Qualities is one of my favorite bands, and truly something hard to find; a folk outfit that doesn't bury each piece of work within a religious or peace-based metaphor. Truly refreshing. I love songs that transcend typical boundaries, that aren't afraid to try something different.. I love 60's folk/rock, but SO much of is about either 1) Love, 2) God, 3) Peace. Not that those aren't viable topics, but come on, we have 15,000,000 songs addressing those things aleady! Let's branch out!

This is exactly what Ed's Redeeming Qualities does. They explore new territory, stuff that each of us struggle with in our day to day life. Filtering it all down through a light, soft, strangely arranged folky-filter.

The stand out track on this album is Big Black Bag.. for some reason I always picture Pink Floyd covering this, with a huge, massive sound system broadcasting over acres and acres of fans... well, probably not. Regardless, if you're tired of the formulaic pablum spoon-fed to us by corporate rock, give this a shot.. it breaks a lot of pop conventions, but without being angry or mean or bitter. How's that for rare?

5 out of 5 stars Subtle, eclectic folk-rock.......1999-03-03

Once you let this music in, you won't want it to go away. Although as an alterna-rock listener I found the folkiness of this album a little embarrassing at times, the insightful lyrics won me over. Worth at least one thorough listen. The only drawback is that this band isn't together anymore; I would have loved the opportunity to see them perform live. These people are about as real and non rock-star as you can get.

A double-dozen (give or take a few, they don't mind) songs about love, life, and chickens, Big Grapefruit Cleanup Job presents the wacky funsters of Ed's Redeeming Qualities at their best--live, in front of a hometown (well, an adopted hometown) audience. Transplants from the Northeast to San Francisco, the trio--Buckets and Breeders veteran Carrie Bradley, restaurant critic Dan Leone, and children's book author Jonah Winter--specialize in whimsical instrumentation (guitar, a one-string, homemade bass, ukulele, accordion, clarinet, violin) and playful lyrics. Sample: "If all I wanted was in your pants, I would've stole your laundry." Far and away their best album, as their studio recordings never captured the atmosphere of their live show, Grapefruit also features original band member Neno Perrotta. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars Fun Tunes from Fun People.......1999-09-11

This CD is fun and light-hearted music from a band that was a true delight to see live. I miss their gigs which always drew a crowd of people to dance, sing along, and laugh. In the years since I bought this CD, it has kept my fiance and I entertained on several cross-country drives and makes me smile whenever I slide it into my stereo. My favorites are "The Princess and the Horseman of the Apocalpse...(aka "the Unicorn Song"), "New Jersey", "I Met a Man", "Green Glass", "Driving on 9", "Swiss Chard", and "Calypso on the Beach". I even bought a tee-shirt at one of the gigs with the cover art and lyrics to all the songs... (sniff!) I miss Ed's :(

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to transcend the mundane..........1999-07-01

Transcending the mundane with its own devices.. I can think of no better way to describe the music of Ed's Redeeming Qualities. A quaint mix of folk, blues, alternative, with a dash of country, Ed's eschews the "standards" of these genres by REFUSING to embrace an over-reliance on percussion. It's impossible to describe how wonderful it is to hear Carrie's breathy expositions without some drug-crazed, slack-jawed wacko banging away arythmically on a snare in the background. Though one might find their music merely light-hearted, the jovial demeanor is really a veneer; what lies below is the stuff that we all struggle with in some form or another; death, love, ambition, finding beauty in ordinary flies in a blue light. For me, this is not party music; this music is for quiet introspection in a dark room with an alcoholic beverage in my hand, contemplating insecurities, failures, and hope for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of the future!!.......2006-04-04

Let me start by saying that the album is a bit inconsistent. BUT the good tracks are AMAZING!!! And worth buying for those tracks alone. "Run Away With Me" is like the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. His voice is incredibly beautiful. Other great tracks are "How To Not Be With You," "Flight," "Even The Pain" and "Come What May" with Felicia Finley (Who I saw in "Wedding Singer") is gorgeous!! Oh and "Both Sides Now" is so different from the original yet works so well!" The arrangement is wonderful. I also love "If You're Not The One." The rest I feel like was kinda filler. Don't get me wrong, Josh sounds amazing on all of it, but I just didn't love the arrangements or song choices. All in all, if you love a great voice there is no reason in the world you wouldn't love this album. I can't wait to see what comes next for Josh! I actually got the album while I was studying abroad in Bologna, Italy and saw him as Tony in "West Side Story." The album was on sale there and I am so glad I got a copy. Bottom line is, I can't wait till his next album!

        4 out of 5 stars Family.......2005-11-17

Those of you who are Ed's fans, I am Dom Leone's niece. (Dan's Cousin) Dom wrote many of the origonal Ed's songs, and most of the art work. I have been a HUGE Ed's fan since I was a little kid. I grew up listening to them, though my uncle Dom died when I was very young, the songs still have a HUGE importance in my life. They are cheesy and uplifting and I still listen to a song atleast once a week. My favorite is the Song for Elise. More bad times is very good cd, so is this one. They really are all good, but if you can get your hands on some old stuff I would strongly recommend it.

        4 out of 5 stars Ed's Next Groove.......2004-07-30

If your reaction to the Ed's Redeeming Qualities canon is anything like mine, it will unfold in stages. You begin with an appreciation of the music's whimsy and lyrical wit (akin to They Might Be Giants, but with a much different sound - most songs are rife with violin, uke, guitar, bongos, and occasionally [on this album, anyway], clarinet). Stage 2 comes quick - you will dismiss the band as a whole and suspect the simplicity of the music to be evidence of a talent deficit. Stage 3 sneaks up on you when you find yourself singing those infectious grooves after not even listening to the music itself for months and as a result, you ultimately give in to the infection and settle with Stage 4 - acceptance.

And maybe you'll even find yourself in Stage 5 - indulgent sadness. There are always at least two or three songs on any given Ed album that make me cry now and again. They have, in their own way (though in a similar fashion to the aforementioned Giants), managed to communicate a great deal of sadness amidst all their whimsy. It is a trap for so many artists of any media to communicate sadness with bathos. Isn't it so much more interesting, if sometimes clumsy, to do just the opposite? Whereas the Giants deliver a tragic ('They'll Need a Crane') and sometimes grisly ('When It Rains, It Snows') sadness, Ed's approach is on the whole much more about loneliness.

I think fans of the Giants will really appreciate this quality in the work of this lesser-known (and now defunct) trio, where onliness pervades even some of the most joyful tunes. 'King of Calypso' captures the isolation of self-censored failure. 'Blood Bank Man' identifies the delerium of falling in love akin to that of losing blood, yet sticks said delerium with the blame of love that is unrequited. 'The Curse' roots out the loneliness of falling in love, whereas 'Forget' exploits the loneliness of being in love. You might find a theme of loneliness even in their very silly a cappella 'Caucasian Spiritual,' arguably about the fear of isolation amidst an assumedly self-professed liberal rhetoric. So it's not all about love. But I'm pretty sure it's all about loneliness.

I omit a star here only because this particular installment is not the strongest. One of their best, 'More Bad Times,' is curiously absent from Amazon's radar as of this writing, and I urge anyone new to Ed's Redeeming Qualities to hunt that one down (several songs from that release were in the film 'Ed's Next Move' - a forgettable piece of cinema which, despite the title, has little to do with this band). But 'It's All Good News' is certainly deserving of its accolades, and contains some of their best songs, even if the release as a whole doesn't quite measure up.

5 out of 5 stars excelllent and different.......2001-08-02

ERQ is one of my favorite bands, because of this album. they sing goofy little songs about everyday life and are so refreshing and different. a great great album.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing! Quite an eye opener........2001-07-08

Ed's Redeeming Qualties fans typically fall into three camps; Those who think Carrie Bradley's (also a former bassist for the Breeders, interesting enough.) songs are better, those who think Dan Leone's songs are better, and those who like them equally. I fall into the first camp; Carrie's songs are typically deeper, more introspective, while Dan's are more bouncy and upbeat.

A perfect example is King of Calypso: classic Dan - funny, witty, and also a song that makes you "want to move." I prefer The Letter, though, a Carrie creation, which I view to be the album's strongest moment. Something that makes you want to listen to it in the dark and softly whisper the lyrics as you think of past lovers, past times, and what the future holds.

Funny, folky, and different.. some of the tracks will make you really think. If you are one of those "as long as it has a good beat" people, you'll probably hate this album. If you are one of those "Hmm.. I like things that make me really think." then you'll be amazed at the depth, profundity, and escape from formulaic pop conventions on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant. the band that coined faux naivete........2001-05-01

This album, indeed all ERQ albums but especially More Bad Times and It's All Good News, are chock-full of brilliant lyrics filled with whacked images. The music is great, upbeat and sometimes downbeat but always textured with interesting arrangements, great (if sometimes purposefully goofy) vocals and solos. One of their songs, Driving on 9, was later made famous by the Breeders (I think Carrie also played with the Breeders).

The day Ed's stopped recording was a sad day for all of us.

        5 out of 5 stars A Superb Entrée into Verdi's 'Falstaff'.......2005-02-06

I have been exceedingly pleased with this whole series of 'An Introduction to ...' various operas from Naxos. They have all been written by Thomson Smillie and read with relish by British actor David Timson. And I think this one on 'Falstaff' may be the best of the lot. Maybe I think that because I'd just been immersed in two historic recordings of 'Falstaff,' and had come to realize what a masterpiece it is and what a huge favorite of mine. Sometimes I get on kicks where I listen to one work again and again, and I'm afraid that's what has happened here. But listening, in the midst of my Falstaff-mania, to this CD has broadened even further my appreciation of this work of genius. Smillie points out things that I, for all my familiarity with the opera, simply had not known, or noticed before. He describes, for instance, how Boito fashioned such a balanced and trenchant libretto of the Shakespeare plays in which Falstaff plays a part, primarily 'Henry IV' and 'The Merry Wives of Windsor.' And he makes the point along the way that Boito had done much the same with Shakespeare's 'Othello' when he came to write the libretto for the Verdi opera just preceding 'Falstaff,' 'Otello.'

The musical examples on this disc are generous and well-chosen. And they are in generally quite good performances. They are all taken from the Naxos 'Falstaff' that stars Domenico Trimarchi as Falstaff, Roberto Servile as Ford, Maurizio Comencini as Fenton, Julia Faulkner as Alice, the single-named Dilbèr as Nannetta, Anna Bonitatibus as Meg Page, and the organ-voiced Anna Maria di Micco as Mistress Quickly, all conducted by Will Humburg, who has given us some very nice performances in the Naxos opera series.

Smillie does a wonderful job of appreciating and outlining this miracle of wit from the elderly Verdi's pen and makes the point that the final product of that pen, the summing up in the last act by means of 'Tutta nel mundo è burla' ('All the world's a joke') from an operatic genius who wrote only one other comedy, as Verdi's final statement to the world, the wisdom of an old man who had seen it all. As that generally agrees with my own view of things, I loved hearing it said.

This is an outstanding release. If you have the least bit of interest in knowing more about this opera, snap it up. It's a keeper.
