RIP, BEVERLY SILLS 1929-2007.......2007-07-03

The great American diva's passing was announced today.

This wonderful CD set is a perfect compilation of her art as can be found anywhere. Her finest roles and performances are captured here, most of them derived from the Westminster/Audio Treasury recordings from her prime. Listening to them again demonstrates to me why she was so special, and such an inspiration to music lovers everywhere.

Brava Sills!.......2007-02-02

A very nice compilation of Sillsiana. The different cuts on this CD provide a nice illustration of her work. Let me briefly describe my response to a sampling of the works on this CD:

Bellini, I Puritani, "Son vergin vezzosa." Wonderful. Sutherland owns this--but so does Beverly Sills. Contemporary sopranos such as Netrebko and Gruberova have also sung this on their respective CDs, and while their product is nice, it simply does not compare. Sills is remarkably agile with her voice; the trills are well done; she cleanly hits high notes; the overall effect can only be described as wonderful.

Bellini, Norma, "Mira, o Norma". This is smoothly sung and very melodic. The technique that she exhibits does not overwhelm the music.

Rosini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, "Contro un cor che accende amore." Again, her agile voice is well deployed. The florid singing is well done.

Donizetti, Roberto Devereaux, "Che m'apporti." Her clean, light voice matches well with this aria. Smoothly sung. Her "Quel sangue versato al cielo s'innalza," which follows, is well done. High notes cleanly hit, a smooth line.

Verdi, La Traviata, "E strano. . . .Sempre libera." Again, what agility! In "Sempre libera," she reveals a rich voice and, again, wonderful agility. This is an animated version of one of Verdi's showcase pieces.

Lehar, Giudetta. "Meine Lippen." A lot of fun! This is smoothly sung.

In the final analysis, this is a nice potpourri of Beverly Sills' repertoire. Those not familiar with her work will find this a nice entree to her oeuvre; those familiar with her will find this a good compilation.

This recording is another in an all too small CD collection of Sills recordings. I eagerly await more.

My Favorite Woman.......2005-08-05

I would have to say that when I first heard Beverly Sills sing, I was entranced. I couldn't take my eyes off of her and I became angry at any rustling around me, because I was afraid I would miss one note. It was so addictive....that is what she is....addictive! A c.d. will never properly capture her style. She is an amazing leader in opera, taking it into a new frontier and I believe this c.d. showcases that.

I absolutely love this CD! In fact this is our second one because we wore out the first since we played it so much. It is very soothing, and in fact we used it to help both our kids (now 4 and 18 mo) go to sleep since they were babies. I highly recommend it!

A Must Have for all Parents of Little Children !!!.......2006-11-25

I bought this when my first baby was...well, a baby. That was 8 years ago. Now I am on my 4th copy of this cd (Mozart For Mothers to Be) and my 3rd child. Nothing works better. I'm on here to buy my 4th copy becasue I've worn them out over the years and have to keep replaceing them. My 8 and 3 year old still use it, and now the new baby, also. Make it part of your nightly bed time routine and you'll have good little sleepers in no time. I swear by it. It is very soothing, calming and not distracting so it won't drive you bonkers if you can hear it a little from the next room.

A truely great gift for new parents, or if you have a sleepless little one at home. Turn on the cd, turn down the lights and let it sooth them to sleep.

Inspire the baby-within.......2005-12-13

Beyond sheer musical appreciation and enjoyment, Mozart's music in general is ideal for gently stimulating the "creative centers" as well as instilling a sense well-being. While there is much academic disagreement about the extent or reality of the so-called "Mozart Effect," it doesn't take a genius to observe how Mozart's music puts most people (and probably babies-to-be) in a happy mood ready to take on the day's challenges. There is a simplicity - yet elegance and musical brilliance - in his music that is also well-suited for the youngest of children.

The selections on this CD are all excellent and represent a nice range of Mozart's compostions, emphasising those that are ideal for creating a pleasant backdrop for leisure, dining and social occasions ("divertimentos"). The recordings are from the creme of musicians famous for their Mozart. Few works are as elegant and soaring as the Serenade #10 for winds - an astonishingly beautiful tune made famous from the early scenes of the movie, "Amadeus." Mozart supreme gifts of music are even seen in such humble "background music" as these pieces. And such continuity of warm, leisurely tones as these over 70 minutes is ideal for inspiring the baby to-be if that is why you are considering this CD. Better to expose a baby to the gentile, lyrical music of Mozart than to the dissonant, loud and disturbing tones of some classical music written well after Mozart.

As the reviewer below rightfully notes, compilation CD's of various unrelated works like this one is not quite how classical music is best meant to be heard. But in a way it is better for many to start with such collections like this - especially for those who just want the more quiet selections that are unintrusive. In that respect, this collection can be satisfying for most anyone (not just moms or babies). I have a huge classical music collection, but still really enjoy listening to one full CD of similar-temperament music like this one that flows easily and smoothly that doesn't demand my attention but only seeks to delight. And, in the end, that was the simple and primary goal of many of Mozart's compositions - to be purely enjoyed and delighted.

Django Reinhardt was both the first great jazz-guitar soloist and the first European jazz musician to have a significant influence on American musicians. Just as Earl Hines had found a way to transfer Louis Armstrong's assertive solo style to the piano, Reinhardt did it with the acoustic guitar, mixing inventive melodic improvisation with a decorative gypsy-guitar idiom and vigorous rhythm. He did it most often with the Hot Club of France, a quintet including violinist Stephane Grappelli, two rhythm guitarists, and a bassist that created its own distinctive style, a lightly propulsive mix that was an ideal setting for Django's mix of drive, invention, and charm. The recordings here range from 1936 to 1948 and showcase Reinhardt with the Hot Club, clarinetist Hubert Rostaing, and trumpeter Rex Stewart. Included is a brilliant solo performance of his "Naguine." It's an excellent introduction to one of the most original voices in jazz of the period, to a fine composer as well as a unique guitarist. --Stuart Broomer

Django is truly a legend for early jazz. His guitar style is unmatched by any other guitarist. What makes him even more unique is that he lost two finders in a fire saving his family, and instead of quiting, he found a style where he could play chords and scales with 2 fingers that other guitarists struggle doing with 4.
This CD is my favorite. It compiles a lot of his best work and the sound quality is really good. Some of his other recordings are rather rough due to the technology back in the 1930s, but this CD is mastered well.
I bought this again after I lost my original while on vacation. This CD will always be in my collection.

Timeless.......2007-02-28

This is an excellent sampler of the work of great Gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. The collection has crisp sound and is full of great performances. Besides having a dazzling technique, Reinhardt swung with wild abandon and played from the heart. The selections included in this set are nothing short of timeless classics.

Obviously a little dated and if you are not used to listening to this kind of music may be a little tough to get through the entire CD in one setting. However, if you appreciate find playing by a skillful, pioneering musician this one is well worth owning.

One word: WOW!!!!.......2006-12-26

I first heard of Django Reinhardt from the admiration of Ardvit in the movie "Swing Kids" (great movie if you haven't seen it). This CD is amazing. It is especially wowing to hear it knowing that Django played without the use of two of his fingers, which were tragically injured early in his life. I have often been concerned about the musical quality of older recordings, but this CD has absolutely no signs of distortion or lack of quality. First rate recording. Django plays amazingly quick and clear rifts that are astounding. He is joined in many of the recordings by Stephane Grappelli on the violin. Grappelli was one of the few that could match Django, and they play off each other wonderfully.

I highly recommend this CD to any lover of Jazz and/or Swing music.

The aim was to do for country what Saturday Night Fever did for disco. The result was that bars from Kona to Kalamazoo suddenly had mechanical bulls, and slickers walking around in cowboy hats. You might also pinpoint this as the moment in time when "country" music suddenly went cosmopolitan, paving the way for Garth Brooks. Johnny Lee's "Lookin' for Love" was one of the decade's biggest singles, and this album briefly made a star of Mickey Gilley (whose Texas club provided a home for that alpha bull). Fans of Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffet, the Eagles, Dan Fogelberg, and Bonnie Raitt may want this collection for the tunes they lack elsewhere. And it sure recalls an era. I love this movie, and I like the songs on this soundtrack, but, there are some songs that were in the movie that realy need to be on the soundtrack, but, they, for some reason left them out. Such as the intro song, "Texas", by Charley Danials. But, overall, it is a good album.

I'm not a country music fan in the least. But I saw this movie at least 3 times and it was superb. I thoroughly enjoyed the music. There are several good artists on this soundtrack like Dan Fogelbert, Bob Seger, Anne Murray, The Eagles, Johnny Lee. Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers and a few others. Every song on this ST is excellent. Even if you're not a country music fan like myself, this is one good CD to have in your collection of movie soundtracks.

I can only say, that as far as I am concerned, this is just some of the best music I have ever heard.... Im guessing this is the way Bach intended his music to sound in the first place, and who better for that than the AMO and Koopman...and of course YO YO... if u love classic music, you are absolutly going to LOVE this cd..I highly recommend it

Maira Callas was never a favorite of mine, but she is notable as a passionate, (but sometime shrill to my ears) performer. This collection is a good single record tribute to her operatic legacy.

The Very Best of Maria Callas.......2006-08-20

Second on my list for CDs that should be recommended for people who want to start on a long trail of Callas to the Carmen with Gedda and Prétre. This has perhaps the best excerpts of all time from Maria Callas. The 'Ritorna vincitor' and 'Una voce poco fa' are to be treasured. Any long-time Callas fan will find this CD of little to no interest, because anything they haven't heard before, there's a better, low-audio-quality version of somewhere. 4 stars for that reason.

Countless assessments of Maria Callas' life and career, as well as re-issues of some of her definitive recorded performances have been fueled by the 25th anniversaary of her tragic and prophetic death alone in her Paris flat on September 16, 1977. One of those such discs, this 17 track retrospective compilation from the archives of EMI is among the best. Every character she portrays is bought to life by her incomparible ability both vocally and emotionally. Enjoy!

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.

We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

This band takes it's fair share of knocks on different blogs on the internet for supposedly being posers... I don't know about any of that stuff, but I do know that this is a really good first effort for any band. I am looking forward to their second album to see how they might evolve. Good stuff. At least give it a try before you write a bunch of negative stuff about them.

The Sword ROCKS!!!.......2007-06-10

This album rocks from beginning to end, with no let up. The riffs are amazing. It is definitely throw back type metal; hell, it just rocks!! If you like headbanging, melt your face metal, this is for you. Age of Winters will play over and over in your cd player without you even realizing it; it will having you rocking when you thought you wanted to mellow out, now that's the sign of a great album. Support these great metalheads and buy this album now!!!

I came across this band from playing Guitar Hero II. The song Freya was included in this game. Most of the tracks from that game cherry pick a good song and the album turns out to be a let down. Not this one.

What a great album this is. Yes the album art is great too.

Best comparison of style is to Black Sabbath. I get annoyed with people that over categorize music. Calling this music "doom metal" might turn a lot of people off. There is nothing morbid or vulgar about this music.

I eagerly await the follow up to this album. Lets see if they can bottle the same magic as Age of Winters.

One of the best Heavy Metal albums ever.......2007-04-30

I've been a Heavy Metal fan for 28 years, got over 3000 Metal LP's and CD's in my collection. So I know something about the scene.

When I heard The Sword's debut album, it felt like listening to Motörhead's "Ace Of Spades" or Metallica's "Kill 'em All" or Trouble's "Psalm 9" for the first time. I got the feeling there's something very special about this band.

Very innovative combination of Doom Metal and Progressive Rock with a touch of 80's Slayer-type Thrash Metal. Sure, there aren't many straight forward, compact up-lifted melodies, but the band got sheer power, attitude and enthusiasm to break through brick wall and into your mind.

And there actually are melodies, mostly hidden cleverly under groovy riffs and fist-in-face drums. When you discover them, the album starts to haunt you so that you don't get enough of it. Every time you discover something new there and don't get tired of listening it for the 3rd time in a row. That's the mark of a masterpiece.

I saw the band in Helsinki a few days ago supporting Clutch and they were amazing also live. If there is any justice in the world, The Sword should become huge. And what a cover art work, so cool...

Get also vinyl version of the album. Wonderful gatefold cover and very, very nice clear vinyl. It rocks!

"The Music Comes Through Me...".......2007-07-06

Listening to this now sounds pretty much like it did listening to it when it was first released. And that will be over ten years ago.

I try to avoid cliches but sometimes they are exactly that for a particular reason. In other words they're right. Okay, this still sounds like music beamed down from above. It sounds other-worldly, it sounds elsewhere...very, very different.

One of my friends is almost exclusively into dance music, has seen DJ Shadow live, and yet still can't quite get into this. My own take on it is that it's a DJ album you can't actually dance to. I mean you could if you wanted to but that's not quite the point. It's far more important than that.

It's just the sound of it all. And this is bass-heavy sampled heaven. 'Building Steam With A Grain Of Sand' builds to a scenario where it sounds like the tinkling ivories are battling the angels of heaven or your imagination whereas 'The Number Song' sounds simultaneously like it's old school excitement, something approaching the here and now, and the very future. Scratching and the skattering, clattering drums. Just excitement. And things like trying to remember that this is all sampled music. It is not live. Just very much alive. 'Changeling' has swampy drums drowned in some muddy production before it takes off and that scratching arrives followed by that bass and then...

Listening to this now I'm struck by how fearless it is, how it taps into a neglected part of you. How it just is. How I struggle sometimes to believe there could actually be a mass market for this. For something this challenging.

You may want stand out tracks but if that's the case, i think I'm struggling. Music this spontaneous (and yes, I know it isn't and there's the trick, the very height of the artistry here...)washes over you as a whole. You feel it or you don't but you hardly worry about which track you're listening to.

Having said that though, if you did want moments, that tension in music when things just work, then you might, just might go for 'Stem/Long Stem'. It soothes and then it builds and then...

'Midnight In A Perfect World' is possibly the most perfect song title ever but i'm still stunned that the song itself doesn't disappoint. A most mellow start until the drums arrive but then keyboards soothe and soulful vocals double that effect. An undercurrent of scratching and repeated mantra-like vocals. Midnight. Midnight. Midnight.

I'm probably more stunned though by 'Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain'. That bass. That bass...And then those drums. And the spectral keyboards at the end. Where does he get all this stuff from? And what happens next? And it goes without saying that we will never have an inkling as to how he then does what he does and makes it all fit together.

'What Does Your Soul Look Like' is definitely the most perfect song title ever and as a song surfaces twice here. You decide which version you prefer.

When people talk about an album being groundbreaking they usually mean 'worthy' and not necessarily something you'll want to listen to over and over again. This though is groundbreaking in the real, the true sense of the word...things beyond. Just listen and expect to be swept away.

In Car Freestyle Session Instrumentals (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-05-20

What I like about DJ Shadow's album "Entroducing..." is that his music blends in the music of jazz & hip hop. It seems like everytime I'm listening to this album, I'm always driving, stuck in traffic on I-75/85. So to help pass the time, I always drop a rhyme to some of the beats on here. And I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I'm pretty good at it. For all you rappers/lyricists out there, don't tell me "Why Hip Hop Sucks in '96" doesn't make you start flowing. "What Does Your Soul Look Like" is another song to get at.

DJ Shadow really shows the art of turntablism and blending vinyl records and sampling (and I mean at it's best). You really have to understand the type of sound that he is trying to create on every track, and it flows real nice. Most of the track vibe real well, something that a lot of instrumental tracks don't have that much, if at all. "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt" is one of the tracks that flow so easily

There were some tracks that I weren't feeling too much. "The Number Song" really didn't stand out to me because of it's high energy and high live sounding effect. Also, I personally thought some of the songs were a minute too long (mostly those two song in one track songs). At a point, I was like, "Damn, how long is this song???". Also I'm mad that "Why Hip Hop Sucks In '96" is only 35 seconds long. In my opinion, that is one of the best beats on the album. But thats all the bad things I can think of.

"Entroducing..." is one of the best instrumental tracks you'll hear. At a time in '96 when hip hop was changing, this would have been a breath of fresh air to hear (espically when people were starting to loose their origonality). This album blows The Outsider as well as Funky Skunk away. There are no vocals on here, except for the samples. This is just pure music to vibe to real easily. Whether if you're driving in traffic, or chillin' in your bed, or if your preference is jazz, or hip hop, this is one album that you will enjoy. Peace.

I wish that I could have sampled this selection prior to it's purchase. There may be some entries that might be good for sampling, but I got no goosebumps listening to it. DJ Shadow has some wonderfully creative grooves out there.....just not on this disc.

An Outstanding Album!.......2006-10-05

I got this album about 2 years ago at a mall. What made me get this great album was after hering a song of a music channel playing a song titled:"Building Steam With A Grain of Salt". After hearing that awesome song, I instantly knew I had to get the cd. I listen to every song on the cd and all are very goog indeed. Right now, "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt", "What Does Your Soul Look Like" (Part 4), and "Midnight In A Perfect World". Im sure I left out a couple, but still, all of them are great. Recommendeed to anyone. Enjoy this great artifact.

This record is a perfect example of how a sampler can be used as a instrument to make a album. Midnight In A Perfect world is my favorite track on this album and is probably one of the 25 best songs written or composed in the 20th century. If you see this record missing from someone's collection or know someone who hasn't listened to it , you need to step up and turn them on to it.

I intially bought this album for a few selections I had heard from Classical 102.1 (KDFC-FM). I was pleasantly surprised that the entire album has a very satisfying collection of the greatest marches. I am very pleased with this album, and would recommend it for anyone who likes a broad range of famous marches.

This CD would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys marches. Some of the marches are popular, others are not. All are well-performed and can be enjoyed - LOUDLY!

Great recordings of stirring music. I like to play it loud while my kids and I clean house. It makes it go by fast.

My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do!
