4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars This needs a more articulate review..........2005-12-10

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

5 out of 5 stars 35 unmistakable tracks.......2005-02-24

You don't need to buy the double-disc "Moondog 1 & 2" to hear the two albums - all that music can also be heard on this (75 minute) single disc.
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.

"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.

Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.

In my 700+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-01-26

Beautiful, quirky, fascinating. A combination of classical, jazz, and improv, this collection made me close my eyes and just feel the music. Interspersed with several of Hardin's two-line poems as punctuation, the musical pieces are truly a wonder.

5 out of 5 stars The Different Drummer We Once Were.......2004-01-05

I bought this album because of a memory, but the music stands up remarkably well to a more objective listening.

It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.

I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.

Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.

My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.

5 out of 5 stars For those who love the music.......2003-11-29

It is simple, it is clear, it is wonderful! I don`t know what style is this. Some people call it `jazz`, but second disc is strongly attached to european madrigal canons. I think, if we listen really good music, we never asked about styles. I heard familiar tunes from Tchaikovsky to Resident`s Duck Stab. You must have this if you`re music lover. If you`re musician (who plays music, dont `have a job`) you must have it too. Listen once or twise, if you don`t like it, simply put it on the shelf. Properly time will come.
P.S. My favorite `I love you` and `Nero`s Expedition`

5 out of 5 stars Moondog.......2002-05-16

I was in the St. Thomas Boys Choir in the early 70's. We would walk to church for rehearsal, and pass Moondog, standing on the corner, usually by the ABC building. A couple of us would talk to him in our free time...he knew our names by our voices. We would listen to his poetry, and he seemed intigued by our choir, although he never heard us, I think. I got his album around this time, and have had it ever since. Fascinating pieces, very intricate, but also with "a hook"...that you find yourself humming along with. I heard he moved to Germany, where he wrote a nine hour canon. Overall, an amazing life story, and an incredible talent.

I'm a Death Metal fan, make no mistake. Upon first listen I could hear this album was fantastic, and after reasearching all the musicians (Roddy in perticular) it was made clear that this is a spectacuar album.

However there was something that really bugged me. Check out Roddy's clips on YouTube.com and his kit sounds amazing, however it didn't really translate to the album.

After listening to the album many a time I began to appreciate the sound that this band has gotten out of their instruments more and more.

The drums have such an organic sound that is really quite charming. The guitars nail it all the way.

This is a monumental album...there's no two ways about it. A must hear for all metal fans!

5 out of 5 stars Death metal for the 21st century........2007-01-28

Erik Rutan, Derek Roddy, and Randy Piro (Hate Eternal) are some of the baddest mofos in death metal nowadays. Hate Eternal is only about ten years old yet they're kicking the arses of cheesy DM bands like Cannibal Corpse and Mortician that have been out nearly a decade longer than these guys.

Anyway, "I, Monarch" was my first Hate' album and it surely won't be my last. Erik Rutan's tenure with Morbid Angel has made him the guitar wizard that he is today; his amazing yet original riff compositions and solos are nothing short of brilliant. His growling and songwriting isn't the typical "OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH!! I will kill you and worship Satan!!" garbage in generic DM, nope, Erik's lyrics are dark yet intelligently written, and his vocals are comprehensive. Just read the lyrics in "Behold Judas:"

"As I stand before thee, Master of the Arcane, Lest we forget your burden father, From beneath the binding, Of the irreverent one who is shroud in darkness, Revealed! Heathen to all that is sacred!, Behold Judas, Betrayer, Behold Judas, Behold!"

While Erik is the best musician here, it's hardly a one-man show. Derek is one of modern death metal's greatest drummers and Randy's crushing basslines support the heaviness that is of Erik's godly riffs and solos.

Every song on here is great, but my favorites are "Two Demons," "Behold Judas," "The Victorious Reign," "To Know Our Enemies," "I, Monarch," and "It is Our Will."

If you want death metal that's original yet crushing, Hate Eternal's "I, Monarch" must be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars On a whim... I ran into the biggest surprise of last year! .......2006-06-10

I was hurting for new death metal, the new Cryptopsy was a few months away and with the exception of Dark Tranquility I hate melodic death metal. So here I am scouring the local record store and I came accross the newest addition to Hate Eternal's repetoir I'Monarch, now I already owned King of All Kings and although I wasn't blown away by it I did enjoy a few cuts so I decided to go ahead and pick up a copy of I'Monarch with little or no expectations of what I was about to hear.

Let's just say that after much deliberation as to what is my favorite death metal album of 2005 I think this one slightly edges Once Was Not for top honors. This album is mind blowingly intense for a three piece band, the sound is thunderous, the overall energy of this recording is a thing of blasphemous beauty that oozes evil and malice. It is technically on the surface a speed for speeds sake death metal album as the overall sound on this gem is about as subtle as a ten ton hammer to the temple however there are little intricacies in each track that keep it from becoming a CD where all of the songs blend into one track (non intentionally) or that wall of sound where you can't discern one instrument from the other. Erik Rutan fully establishes himself on this record, if you were not impressed by Conquering the Throne or K.o.a.K. then you are not alone, I thought this band was definately talented but there was something missing, that void has been filled and I strongly encourange anyone who has written off Hate Eternal to pick this one up because I will now be happy to buy anything they release from this point.

Death metal fans let's rejoice, Hate Eternal now joins the ever growing list of fantastic death metal bands that are churning out some of the most brutal music ever known to mankind. Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Nile, and Morbid Angel now have some pretty stiff competition with Hate Eternal, Decapitated, Krisiun, and Behemoth all making their presence known with new releases that truly embody everything death metal is about. Support the underground, buy these CD's, go to the shows, and let's leave the melodies to the Swedish.

5 out of 5 stars Hard as Hell..........2006-05-28

"In short, Hellbent is a numbnut goofball who is probably spanking it to the new As I Lay Dying." $hit you said it Kilug. Non death metal fans really shouldn't review this album; that would be like me giving my opinion on women's shoes. I just dont have a f**king clue in that area.if you enjoy relentless drumming, dirty riffs, and some of the most hardcore vocals in metal today than pick up this album. If you cant handle it then go buy the new slipknot. "Musical maturity" is a sad excuse for being a sellout.
-Peace

5 out of 5 stars Quality brutal death metal. Just as you'd expect from this line-up........2006-05-21

Let's have a look at Hate Eternal. Take the ex-guitarist of Morbid Angel, being the incredible Erik Rutan. Add one of the most breath-taking drummers on Earth in Derek Roddy of Nile, Malevolent Creation and Internecine fame. Sprinkle the old Diabolic guitarist Eric Hersemann and bassist Randy Piro and mix well. What do you get? Could it really be anything but awesome, brutal, technical death metal? I think not!

Hate Eternal have released their third album. Entitled "I, Monarch", this 42 minute beating doesn't really depart from the expected territory, but it certainly does what it sets out to do in no uncertain terms. That's not to say that there's nothing original on offer here. After all, Erik Rutan has an extremely unique guitar style and the talent to try things without losing the touch of quality that adorns all his work.
The musicianship on show in this band is astounding, and each of these tracks will have you in awe. But most importantly, these guys never let their talents overpower their song-writing, with each track holding its own with gripping riffs, masses of brutality and individual character in full force.

There's enough variety on "I, Monarch" to keep listeners attention throughout, even if the band don't tend to slow down all that much for very long. It can be a chore sometimes to get through some of the more extreme albums of late, particular those that have a playing length in excess of 40 minutes, but that's not the case with Hate Eternal. I keep pressing play again.

Highlights are mostly to be found during the first half, with "Behold Judas", "To Know Our Enemies" and "The Plague of Humanity" being the best on offer. Anyone that calls themselves a fan of extreme metal and death metal in particular (and I don't mean melodic death metal), will surely dig this album. Fans of the bands previous work should know that this is their best release to date, with a good production (it isn't pristine, but then I don't think they wanted it that way) that manages clarity and power amongst the chaos.

What a year for death metal! They said it was dead, but they were clearly wrong. Nile, Lost Soul, Immolation and Aborted have all released great albums, and Hate Eternal has kept the fires burning in fine style.

4 out of 5 stars Music for the baby!.......2006-10-14

I am the caregiver for my newborn grandson who is VERY VERY fussy. There are all kinds of CDs with soothing music for the babies, BUT I happened to hear that opera was a great listen for the little ears and this one is the best. It has high voices and very low bass voices lots of BOOMs and arias. When I first put it on for him, (in the middle of a loud cry), he quieted down almost as soon as the first stanza was over. He now smiles and waves his little arms and legs around when I turn it on. He Listens and loves this CD, and so do I! The words are hard to understand but the sounds are marvelous. If you know of any mother/father who is wanting music for a small baby/child, tell them about Gilbert and Sullivan (and they will enjoy it, too).

1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable.......2005-11-11

The voices are wonderful, but the recording is so faulty that only the two tracks from Iolanthe sound at all okay. At first I thought it was my equipment, then realized that the CD was at fault. And I bought one for myself and one for a friend! I adore Gilbert & Sullivan and D'Oyly Carte is the best, but this particular CD shouldn't be offered for sale.

5 out of 5 stars THIS is music . . ........2005-07-21

. . . not rap, not rock, not pop. Light opera! I love Arthur Sullivan's music, even though I'm 11, and I love this CD! The tunes are really catchy, and I'm usually singing one to myself. Not many people my age like light opera, but to me, it's the best music there is. Don't be afraid that you won't like this CD. You'll love it, even though it's hard to understand at sometimes. You might want to listen to some of the songs first to see if you like it. After all, not everyone likes opera.

5 out of 5 stars A Surefire Method of Loosing the Blues.......2000-03-03

This recording, done in a studio, allows the listener to "hear" all the words of all the patter songs. John Reed is just excellent as Koko, the Modern Major General, the Monarch of the Sea. Highlights come from Iolanthe, HMS Pinefore, Yeomen, Mikado, Gondoliers. A truly wonderful experience to be enjoyed over and over.
