Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

35 unmistakable tracks.......2005-02-24
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.
"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.
Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.
In my 700+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.
Wonderful.......2004-01-26
The Different Drummer We Once Were.......2004-01-05
It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.
I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.
Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.
My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.
For those who love the music.......2003-11-29
P.S. My favorite `I love you` and `Nero`s Expedition`

It grows on you..........2007-06-29
However there was something that really bugged me. Check out Roddy's clips on YouTube.com and his kit sounds amazing, however it didn't really translate to the album.
After listening to the album many a time I began to appreciate the sound that this band has gotten out of their instruments more and more.
The drums have such an organic sound that is really quite charming. The guitars nail it all the way.
This is a monumental album...there's no two ways about it. A must hear for all metal fans!
Death metal for the 21st century........2007-01-28
Anyway, "I, Monarch" was my first Hate' album and it surely won't be my last. Erik Rutan's tenure with Morbid Angel has made him the guitar wizard that he is today; his amazing yet original riff compositions and solos are nothing short of brilliant. His growling and songwriting isn't the typical "OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH!! I will kill you and worship Satan!!" garbage in generic DM, nope, Erik's lyrics are dark yet intelligently written, and his vocals are comprehensive. Just read the lyrics in "Behold Judas:"
"As I stand before thee, Master of the Arcane, Lest we forget your burden father, From beneath the binding, Of the irreverent one who is shroud in darkness, Revealed! Heathen to all that is sacred!, Behold Judas, Betrayer, Behold Judas, Behold!"
While Erik is the best musician here, it's hardly a one-man show. Derek is one of modern death metal's greatest drummers and Randy's crushing basslines support the heaviness that is of Erik's godly riffs and solos.
Every song on here is great, but my favorites are "Two Demons," "Behold Judas," "The Victorious Reign," "To Know Our Enemies," "I, Monarch," and "It is Our Will."
If you want death metal that's original yet crushing, Hate Eternal's "I, Monarch" must be in your collection.
On a whim... I ran into the biggest surprise of last year! .......2006-06-10
Let's just say that after much deliberation as to what is my favorite death metal album of 2005 I think this one slightly edges Once Was Not for top honors. This album is mind blowingly intense for a three piece band, the sound is thunderous, the overall energy of this recording is a thing of blasphemous beauty that oozes evil and malice. It is technically on the surface a speed for speeds sake death metal album as the overall sound on this gem is about as subtle as a ten ton hammer to the temple however there are little intricacies in each track that keep it from becoming a CD where all of the songs blend into one track (non intentionally) or that wall of sound where you can't discern one instrument from the other. Erik Rutan fully establishes himself on this record, if you were not impressed by Conquering the Throne or K.o.a.K. then you are not alone, I thought this band was definately talented but there was something missing, that void has been filled and I strongly encourange anyone who has written off Hate Eternal to pick this one up because I will now be happy to buy anything they release from this point.
Death metal fans let's rejoice, Hate Eternal now joins the ever growing list of fantastic death metal bands that are churning out some of the most brutal music ever known to mankind. Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Nile, and Morbid Angel now have some pretty stiff competition with Hate Eternal, Decapitated, Krisiun, and Behemoth all making their presence known with new releases that truly embody everything death metal is about. Support the underground, buy these CD's, go to the shows, and let's leave the melodies to the Swedish.
Hard as Hell..........2006-05-28

Quality brutal death metal. Just as you'd expect from this line-up........2006-05-21
Hate Eternal have released their third album. Entitled "I, Monarch", this 42 minute beating doesn't really depart from the expected territory, but it certainly does what it sets out to do in no uncertain terms. That's not to say that there's nothing original on offer here. After all, Erik Rutan has an extremely unique guitar style and the talent to try things without losing the touch of quality that adorns all his work.
The musicianship on show in this band is astounding, and each of these tracks will have you in awe. But most importantly, these guys never let their talents overpower their song-writing, with each track holding its own with gripping riffs, masses of brutality and individual character in full force.
There's enough variety on "I, Monarch" to keep listeners attention throughout, even if the band don't tend to slow down all that much for very long. It can be a chore sometimes to get through some of the more extreme albums of late, particular those that have a playing length in excess of 40 minutes, but that's not the case with Hate Eternal. I keep pressing play again.
Highlights are mostly to be found during the first half, with "Behold Judas", "To Know Our Enemies" and "The Plague of Humanity" being the best on offer. Anyone that calls themselves a fan of extreme metal and death metal in particular (and I don't mean melodic death metal), will surely dig this album. Fans of the bands previous work should know that this is their best release to date, with a good production (it isn't pristine, but then I don't think they wanted it that way) that manages clarity and power amongst the chaos.
What a year for death metal! They said it was dead, but they were clearly wrong. Nile, Lost Soul, Immolation and Aborted have all released great albums, and Hate Eternal has kept the fires burning in fine style.
