Promises: Oriental Classical Music

About the Artist
Hicham Chami, a native of Morocco now living in Chicago, began qanun study at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Rabat. He performs with musicians from all Oriental traditions throughout the U.S. Chami was named "Best Instrumentalist" by Chicago Magazine in 2002.

Catherine Alexander, a Californian, has studied Arabic percussion with Souhail Kaspar and Michel Merhej Baklouk. Her musical background includes medieval and folk percussion in the European tradition. Alexander performs with Sephardic, Turkish, and Middle Eastern ensembles on the west coast.

"Promises," featuring qanun and hand drums, is a tribute to the heritage of classical Oriental instrumental music by renowned composers Yusuf Basha, Jamil ‘Uways, Isma’il Haqqi Bik, Tanburi Jemil Bey, Riyad al-Sunbati, Ibrahim al-'Aryan, Tatyus Efendi, Georges Farah, and Muhammad ‘Abd al-Wahhab. The music was selected from traditional genres: bashrafs, sama’is, and longahs. An informative CD insert booklet contains a glossary of terminology as well as a guide to maqam theory.
