First off, I love the name. Jai-alai is truly god's gift to the world. Or at least, the sleazy world of high-speed racquetball with lacrosse-like claws. The band itself doesn't play at breakneck speed, nor do they sling noise to richochet around in your skull, which is a surprising display of restraint for a Gold Standard Labs band. Instead, they're a quirky indie-pop band, but more interesting and fun than others of that ilk. They pack a lot of musical muscle for a trio, with nontraditional song structures and multitextured playing, while not sacrificing a great deal of pleasing melody. The vocals take a minute to get used to - they're in the high-pitched vein of Perry Farrell, Sting, and the Shins dude - but they befit the music. In fact, they're kind of like the Shins but with a good sense of rhythm and humor. Check out the harmonizing on "Diary of the Mass Trappist" and the reggae-ish "Sugar Free."
