Yes, indeed, Julien Clerc is unparallelled as a French male singer! Ever since I heard the song, "Si j'etais elle" when I was in France in 2001, I was hooked. I later found the live version of "La belle est arrive" on one of my various artists albums and listened to it over and over again. Recently I decided to take a chance and purchase "Si on chantait." And you bet I wasn't disappointed! I found much more that I liked other than "La belle est arrive." Here are my impressions:

#4: Ce n'est rien: a very catchy and timeless classic. It is full of rhythmic changes, and I enjoy it completely.
#5: Si on chantait: this is the most surprisingly fun song that I've ever heard. It makes me get up and dance, cheers me up. What a completely lively and optimistic song. In spite of all the other great songs, this is by far my favorite!
#14: Quand je joue: this is a great song with a great beat.
#18: Utile: I struggled between this song and "Si on chantait" as my favorite. And it wasn't easy to choose! This song is slow and satisfying, like a fine wine going down a well-receiving throat (and meeting an accepting liver). Ok, it's hard to express just what I'm trying to say. I like the part where he goes into his "la, la" refrain. So, I will declare this my second favorite!
#19: The belle est arrive: the song that attracted me to this album. It is truly great, but I think the live version is better.

Thus concludes my impressions on this great album. I plan to buy the following albums as well: "N 7," one of the live albums, and "Si j'etais elle." As I've said in one of my Patricia Kaas reviews, we need to increase the popularity of French artists in the United States, as they have so much (more) to offer! And Julien, if you read this: you are wonderful, and I hope to see you in concert one day! Have a great day, everyone! :-)

HIS FIRST ALBUM (1968) WAS AN INSTANT SUCCESS IN FRANCE. IT MADE HIM A STAR. I WAS ALREADY A FAN! 33 YEARS LATER HE IS STIL AS GOOD, AS ORIGINAL, AS CHARMING AND INTENSE. THIS ALBUM HAS IT ALL: THE FIRST SONGS:(LA CAVALERIE/IVANOVITCH/LA CALIFORNIE),
THE "ROMANTIC" JULIEN:( MA PREFERENCE/THIS MELODY/FAIS MOI UNE PLACE), PASSINATE:(JALOUX), OUTRADGED:(L'ASSASSIN). IT'S IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO FEEL ENERGETIC LISSENING TO "MACUMBA/QUAND JE JOUE/SI ON CHANTAIT".
JULIEN WRITES MOST OF THE MUSIC, RODA-GIL WROTE THE LYRICS FOR 13 SONGS. LISSEN WITH ATTENTION TO DABADIE'S LYRICS: THAT MAN KNOWS A LOT ABOUT LOVE!
GREAT COPULATION ALBUM. GREAT AS ALL JULIEN CLERC ALBUMS.
TAKE FRENCH LESSONS IF YOU HAVE TO! IT'S WORTH IT!

When i was a teenager girls were crazy about him, and now that he reached 50 they still like him.But don't get me wrong, JULIEN CLERC is a good singer with a distintive style that only belongs to him.His most prolific lyric writer ETIENNE RODA-GIL is the co-star of the album here along with JEAN-LOUP DABADIE. The two of them wrote great songs for him and the most surprizing is L'ASSASSIN ASSASSINE, because you do not expect a song like this from JULIEN CLERC. You can buy that one with eyes close ,and enjoy it with your wife or girlfriend.Who knows what may happen next!

      If you are not familiar with Julien Clerc, this album serves as an introduction to his music. It is meant to inspire you to go out and bring home some more Julien, and I'll have to say that it does a very good job at that indeed. Included here are all of the greatest songs from his career.
      When Julien sings, one cannot ignore what is being said. His music is filled with such deep passion. He has this keen and insightful way of respecting, understanding, and portraying women as total goddesses. Listen to "Fais Moi Une Place" or "Femmes, Je Vous Aime", and tell me that this man is not a romantic!
      Even though Julien Clerc has been around for well over 30 years, his music (as well as his looks) still remains TIMELESS. 'A Rendez-vous...' does not try to sound like anything but classic French music. Songs such as "Ce N'est Rien", "Utile", "Ma Preference", "Le Coeur Volcan", or "La Belle est Arrive" all have such a romantic old-world French feel to it. Upon listening, you will automatically be whisked away to that small Provencial town situated in the depths of the French countryside. If this CD does not inspire you to drop everything, and run immediately to the airport for the next flight out to France, I doubt anything ever will!

      As being a great fan of Julien Clerc, the best word I would use to describe this CD is "GREAT". It contains indeed Julien Clerc's most wonderful songs such as "Les Séparés", or "Ma Préférence", which I really find marvelous and who reflect real love throughout heartwarming lyrics... A must have for all of Julien Clerc's Fans, and a must try for anyone who understands french, who likes lovesongs, enchanting music from a singer which is as lively as love itself, a singer whose career is exceptional, and who conveys hope, love, passion... through his songs which are deep enough to make some people fall in love with them.

      Again, this CD, as well as the artist and his songs are just great.

      The title looked so good, and even a new song of Julien Clerc is called Rendez-vous with...which is by the way a very nice song. But it's not on this one, still all the oldies, which is a shame for a truly fan.

      I bought a single version of this album while I was in Tours, France just recently! "Si j'etais elle" is by far one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard--in any language. I highly recommend this album, as well as learning the French language! You can learn so much from learning a foreign language. I also recommend that everyone spend some time in France (I was there for 6 weeks). In any case, this is a wonderful album by a very talented chateur (male singer)! A bien tot, toute le monde! :-)

      I must say at once i was introduced to Julien Clerc's music in the early 80's while briefly living in France and was soon impressed enough to buy one album, without making any great effort at further exploration. I remember a cynical friend (very unfairly) likened his quivering voice to a goat! Back in the country 24 years on, i wondered whether he was still going. With a full 60 songs from a now very long and distinguished career, fitting together here so naturally you shouldn't feel the dreaded need to skip tracks, this collection gives a resounding answer.

      Starting in 1968, the first disc is enjoyable for its precocious musicality, its youthful sense of freedom and adventure (a playful mix of dolphins, sea chanties, elephants, skating on ice, hippy musical, love and travel..); the second, from '75 to '82, a quiet consolidation with no loss of charm or passion; the third perhaps most impressive, for its melodic strength and ballads which unfold their warm seductive beauty on repeated listens. If the second half of his career has been rather less prolific, it seems that far from stagnating or declining Clerc has ripened like fine wine to enhance a now tremendous catalogue.

      I suppose the overall style might be compared to a mix of famous international artists such as Elton John, The Beatles, Paul Simon, Julio Iglesias, Cat Stevens and Barry Manilow, but this would do no justice to its own distinctive Gallic flavour- a mischievous concoction with a pirate's dash of tropical exoticism. If you like most or all the above artists (i'm a fan of the first 2 named) you should certainly appreciate Julien Clerc, but i feel his music should appeal not only to middle-aged fogeys like me but to sensitive and adventurous romantics in general. My wife is smitten. I hope this beguiling album will transport you too to a starlit Paris and to happy, deep and even sexy places beyond.

      No comments are needed. This compilation from one of France's most profilic and beloved singer songwriters is simply amazing! Any Francophile should own it as all his classic are included.
      Listening to LA CALIFORNIE in your ride with your top down in LA's indian summer is a must...
